  • Today I am going to cover one of the most popular questions I get from people that comment on my videos or when patients visit me at the office - "What foods can I eat to help lower my creatinine?".
The goal with anyone with chronic kidney disease is to improve or maintain kidney function. That is measured from Creatinine levels or Glomerular Filtration Rate (aka GFR) in a routine blood test. With kidney disease the goal is to keep creatinine lower, which means the kidneys are filtering better, and their GFR higher.
In this week's video we are going to talk about if there is any food, drink or trick you can do to help lower your creatinine. You may have heard that red pepper, cabbage, berries or even nettle tea can help do this. Or maybe you have heard eating lots of red meat can help do this. We are going to discuss all this and more. Give it a watch and be sure to like, subscribe and comment.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and UA-cam sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 UA-cam subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

About seven years ago i started having problems w/HBP and urinary problems. There was also associated pain in abdomen and back. But with the exception of one infection, the only one I ever had in my 65 years, no one looked at the problem as maybe kidney. I never had HBP, DIABETES or any disease related to Kidney problem. But they chalked it up to digestive issues and pretty much thought I was a complainer.
Then at age 70 my left kidney failed. So much pain! I went to my care provider and they did a CT and discovered a 7.5 cm cyst on that kidney and they sent me home with antibiotics and pain meds. The next day I went in again in worse shape. They gave me IV pain MEDS and antibiotics and sent me home. On the third day I went back and someone finally arranged to have a radiologist drain the cyst. I went to the urologist afterward and he recommended unroofing and removal of the cyst and moving the ureter as the CT showed things were pretty twisted up in there. Then strangely he didn’t pursue that even though he was enthusiastic about doing it. But the cyst came back with a vengeance. And I kept trying to get them to remove it. Six monnths later the cyst had brought the left kidney function to 0. They finally scheduled the surgery.
When you say trust your doctor, I cringe. I now have about 29% function in that kidney, so we saved that much with the surgery. And I ate mostly veggies and was careful with everything I ate. I believe if they had removed the cyst initially that would not have happened. I have never ate much red meat and still dont. I never had a high creatinine in my life until this happened at age 70. And though I have been physically active and healthy most of my life I feel my doctor let me down. I changed my insurance and now am in a different system with more care and saw a nephrologist for the first time last June, a year after my surgery. I really think the urologist did a great job, but I believe the system he works in prevented him from doing the surgery earlier. My GFR had to get in the low forty range before he did the nuclear kidney function test. I had to wait another month for my surgery. As one Urgent Care doc put it, “Your warranty is up.” He was right. When you have medicare and med advantage I think it is a limited warranty service. I haven’t lost my sense of humor through it, but I no longer trust my medical doctors like I used to.
So do I trust doctors. I am, sadly, dubious.

I live in a 3rd world country known for its slums and poverty. But I can tell you, our medical systems are much better than any in the US. All major operations are subsidised and affordable thanks to socialism and medical insurance isn't cut throat yet. Do visit India if you need expert medical intervention, transplant etc, you will be amazed by the medical tourism here.

Can this mean that my creatinine is high because I have alot of muscle mass for my age? I have limited my protein,, cut out red meats, low sodium and potassium diet. Should I be worried? I've never had diabetes but had undiagnosed vesicoureteral reflux which led to reflux nephropathy. This was B/C of very neglectful parents who left me with a housekeeper when I was 8 years old while my older siblings flew the coop. My parents divorced and moved far away from each other and me. Despite getting sick a lot no one bothered to take me to a doctor. if I fell ill, Dad would stab me in the butt with a Penicillin injection if he happened to be on one of his fleeting visits from O/S where he was consolidating his dentistry empire, though he also had surgeries in NZ. It wasn't till I started my nursing course that I learned what was wrong with me (I practically diagnosed myself) during which time I was frequently hospitalized (in the same hospital I was training in) that something was done about; I had a left nephrectomy at 21. But the damage had already been done by then.
Most nephrologists don't see my kind of kidney disease often. One day mine asked me 'where were your parents?' I shrugged my shoulders and said I hardly ever saw them when I was growing up. This was after the nephologist told me I'd need dialysis, but a kidney transplant would be better he said. My sister offered me hers, but then my mother started hounding me about not wanting her other children to be less than perfect by one of them giving me one of theirs. I told my nephrologist, and he remarked 'your mother's a narcissist, don't talk to her.' Both my parents are dead now and sadly I've never shed a tear for either of them since then. I will never forgive them for how they treated me putting me through so much pain, suffering and heartache for much of my life. When you're ill, you can get through most things with a loving family around you. I got through it but it's still a work in progress and it's made me mentally unwell at times with suicidal ideation. Yet I've survived legionnaires disease, sepsis and other medical emergencies. I went on to finish my RN training and worked as a nurse for over 30 years, I also managed to train a martial art for many years, getting my 1st dan in Japan. I'm rightly proud of myself.
I can appreciate people searching for an answer to stop your kidney function deteriorating even further; I drank really expensive organic blueberry juice, got specially made alkaline water to drink which turned out to be a pyramid scheme of some sort; people preying on the vulnerable again.
The lesson I've learned in life, is to trust no one except yourself. This has made me very resilient, strong, determined and resourceful. People might find that sad, but I don't. It pleases me no end, so long as I can keep out of hospital and as well as I can.

      @janececelia7448 11 місяців тому +3

@@nadineyturraspe1981 Thank you for your kind words. It has been a struggle for sure. What I've learnt in my 64 years is that you can overcome almost anything with unconditional love and support, neither of which I have ever experienced. It's actually kind of weird because the sicker I am the meaner my family gets, particularly my sister. What's also weird is why I deserve this treatment. What's in my nature that brings out the worst in people. Perhaps a philosopher or a psychiatrist will have the answer to that conundrum. Any attempts I make to go to counselling with her gets ignored or ridiculed. She has nothing to say to a therapist, but she's got loads to say to me; like just the other day yelling at me to 'f **k off' then hanging up on me. I texted her back stating that abusing a sick person is uncool, which riled her up even more. She came back with it's amazing that she hasn't screamed at me more often. Oh, but you have I thought. Only my friend in New Zealand, where I'm from, knows of my torment with regards to her. In public she all lovey dove towards me. Talk about gaslighting; she wrote the book. I never see myself as inspiring others. So, thanks for that boost of confidence.
Reading back on what I just wrote you doesn't sound so inspiring to me; it's sounds like I'm whining and full of self-pity, which am a bit. Take care.

I've been stable for 13+ years. My kidneys were damaged when I was 9 when I had a twisted ureter...I stay away from legumes dairy, all meats, fish, eggs...I've created my own pattern of eating. I drink a great deal of water because it is easy to get very dehydrated here in the Southwest.

@@amyrad4145 No...that's protein. On the ranking of foods that are harder for kidneys to process, eggs are there ! Dairy, eggs, meats, fish, nuts, legumes. Chickpeas in small amounts seem to be fairly OK because their amino acid profile is less of an issue than red kidney beans which is close to meat..I could tell the effect on my creatinine ...I really track this closely!

    Hello Doctor
I had a stone for a year before it was discovered this month when I finally got pain. I know now it was over a year in the making because I wet the bed twice a year ago but no one thought to check my kidney. Well after getting extreme pain in my right back side I went to the ER and they saw a 7mm stone. They also saw my creatinine levels up to 1.9 an after removing the stone 2 weeks ago my creatinine is now 1.67 and my EGFR level is 49… My questions are, now the surgery is fine and my stent is now removed, can I expect my creatinine’s level to go back down and my EGFR to go back up 🔝 to normal? If so, how long will it take approximately?

I do everything already that you suggest and always have for all of my life. My weight is good. No diabetes. No chronic HBP, although BP was high when I had my kidney failure. My kidney failure and disease was from a very large 7.5 cm cyst which blocked function and crossed (?) blood vessels over ureter. Could you address the issue of loss of kidney function due to a large obstructive cyst that is not polycystic cysts? According to my nephrologist my case is rare. Thank you. I enjoy your show.

I had same thing. My doctor said that because it was an INJURY and NOT a DISEASE that I would never need dialysis unless I had another injury to the kidneys. My numbers are bad, I'm stage five, but find a doctor who will understand the difference between an INJURY and Kidney disease. It's how to avoid dialysis. Most doctors want to put us on dialysis to protect them (my cardiothoracic surgeon from Harvard Med) because low kidney function can cause afib in the heart and cause heart attack in RARE cases (where heart disease is already present) says. My nephrologist said I don't need dialysis until the kidneys fail totally. He said it's like having a quarter tank of gas in your car. You don't need more gas (dialysis) until you're out of gas. You can still function with low kidney numbers.

Maintain the stage you're at by low protein diet. Like no meat. Eat twice a day maybe, like small meals. A book said like no more than 20, like veggie proteins a day. Meaning, like 10 proteins or so per meal. If you research a little you can do it. Fill out the water intake, Visa v the output! So you don't lose weight.. supplement with a brand of essential amino acids!! Doctors got medical grade o n e s. But they can be expensive. But I know a company,.. calwood nutritionals in sykesville, that gives a good batch to use for a month! For only like $100! And it's healthy and pure. You won't be much hungry anyway. Take supplements like CoQ10, resveratrol, astragalus. Watch the amount of urine output stabilize daily. Make sure not much bubbles.. especially when waking up. Besides the foods, certain meds, and a host of other things, certain meds can lower egfr and even alter the stage...etc. There's a lot of math with it when a pt.
