      The difference in yolk color has to do with the diet of the birds. If you get pasture raised chicken eggs, they are orange. That's because they don't eat just grain, they eat grass seeds and grasses, bugs, etc., a more natural diet, not dictated by man. They are healthier!

    I was eating three egg whites almost daily, fried in olive oil with fried onions and bell pepper and some fajita seasoning...sometimes on toast, sometimes on a salad. But in that time my kidney function jumped 25 points from and EGFR of 59 to an EGFR of 84. My creatinine went from 1.1 to .9. This was in a 6 month period. The next 6 months (after I got the all clear) I slacked up and ate more red meat...my cholesterol went high and my EGFR dropped to 73. So I am going back to my old way of eating that included eggs and cheese (not the highly processed stuff...real cheese) but I limited milk to almond milk unsweetened.

      Hello, I have: CKD-3b, Diabetes Type-2, Insulin dependent, hypertension, and fairly overweight in my female gender as I am 71 years old. I strongly am curious about Mediterranean diet, vegetarian diet, and vegan diet. I drink almond milk, fresh filtered water, herbal teas and decaffeinated Japanese green teas only. He refused to drink water. Always diet 7up, coffee, tea, milk, buttermilk. He only died, because he fell and hit his head. He'd probably still be alive. He was a tough old war hero! :P I think he lived so long because he quit smoking back when it was 50 cents a pack, because "It got too expensive." He also rarely drank alcohol.
    Then take my 60-year-old dad who has smoked since he was 16, has diabetes, eats the same kinda stuff as grandpa (maybe a bit better variety), drinks more water, but he's getting cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. My dad drank like a fish from his youth up until he was about 50.

    Eggs are a prime source of nutrition. Especially if you eat a plant-based diet. If you avoid processed foods and soda, that's the first thing you can do for your body. Second, never use sugar. Only fruit occasionally, but beware of fructose. Use only virgin olive oil with high polyphenol content along with long chain EFA omega 3 fatty acids. Short chain plant based omega 3 is also good as it can compete with the precursor of sc EFA omega 6. In such a diet, you can safely consume eggs daily.❤

  • @sillililli01
    @sillililli01 5 місяців тому +3

    Plant-based diets come with their own challenges:
    Anti-nutrients. Examples include:
    Glucosinolates/goitrogens can prevent the absorption of iodine, which may then interfere with thyroid function.
    Lectins in legumes, whole grains-can interfere with the absorption of calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc.
    Oxalates can bind to calcium and prevent it from being absorbed.
    Phytates (phytic acid) can decrease the absorption of iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium.
    Saponins can interfere with normal nutrient absorption.
    Tannins can decrease iron absorption.
    It makes it very difficult, to not only know, what to eat, but how much and when to eat it. And, what can be combined with what!
    I've decided, at this point in my life, to eat a balanced diet and stay away from processed and sugar-laden items.

      I think I just give up. After watching this and many other podcasts on what is good and what is bad for us and what interacts with what and like you mentioned the iron and tannin and so on, it is just getting pathetic. I think a good start would be to stay away from processed foods, sugars, and seed oils as much as possible and use everything else in moderation. That way you are not putting all your money in one account should the worst happen. I think that in short term each diet might be beneficial if that's what ppl decide to do but long term might not be sustainable. Good to do own bloodwork at least to check for basic levels but that's about it. Ppl will get sick by stressing out what they can and cannot eat.

      I am desperate too. I don't eat meat, fish or dairy (I used to live on cheese). I don't eat potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, rice or pasta . I eat unlimited vegetables and salads of all other types. I eat nuts and blueberries and bananas. I bake salt-free wholemeal wheat and rye sourdough bread (as long as I can toast it I am happy. After a while ordinary bread tastes horribly salty). I make wholemeal wheat wraps without salt or oil but with all sorts of herbs and spices. Absolutely no processed food. I don't drink beer any more because it makes me ravenously hungry. The potassium in vegetables is much less bioavailable than in meat fish and dairy. The phosphorus in vegetables is much less bioavailable than in meat fish and dairy. The potassium and "phos" in processed foods is absorbed 100%. Absolutely no COLA. No sweeteners. No soft drinks (sodas). I am diabetic. My hba1c on the day of my diagnosis was 125 (sky high). It is now in the thirties (normal). I take no diabetes meds (no white bread, potatoes, rice or pasta).

I am hesitant to change my diet because it's working for me, but I would rather avoid kidney trouble than treat it. I eat a fair amount of red meat. And I use a fair amount of salt. If someone has a risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones and eats a plant-based diet, they should be aware that tofu, soy products and almonds contain fairly high levels of oxalates.

    • @PlantBasedKidneyHealth
      @PlantBasedKidneyHealth  4 місяці тому

      Tofu/soy products are definitely higher in oxalates. However, most people with calcium oxalate stones don't have high urine oxalate levels. They have high urine calcium levels and sometimes pH imbalances. It is so important for people with stones to get 24 hour urinalysis done so they know WHY they specifically are forming stones and then can make dietary changes based on that. If urine oxalate levels are high, usually people can lower it by avoiding the extremely high oxalate foods (like spinach, almonds, beets, rhubarb) and don't have to be so nit picky with moderate-high oxalate foods (like soy). It's also important to have a good source of calcium with the meal for oxalates to bind to....so much to think about haha we do have an episode on oxalates and one on kidney stones with a renal dietitian that specializes in stones that you can check out for more info!

    In 1972-73 there was an interesting study of 100 centenarians in Japan. (There is a pdf on the Internet) The researchers thought that they would find a lot of vegans or vegetarians among them, but there were none. They were eating meat (probably small amounts), milk, eggs and vegetables, but overall low carbohydrates. I don't recall that they mentioned many of the specific food types, but Japanese on a traditional diet also eat fish, natto, tofu, miso and some white rice. They eat very little sugar. I shared my apartment with Japanese people in the 1980's and I can say that they ate very little sweets, the main one being rice crackers, which to us are hardly sweet at all.
    One of the researchers credited their longevity to the milk they were drinking. It was probably a much healthier milk than what we have today, maybe raw, and without hormones. It makes sense, because older people are often very deficient in calcium which is such an important mineral. The eggs too were giving them a great source of complete protein. I would also emphasize a relatively low carb diet which was easy on their blood sugar and insulin production. In other words, there was low inflammation in their bodies.
    This is the kind of diet that I believe is the healthiest and try to follow. Generally low carb, except with lots of high fiber vegetables, fish, mainly omega-3, eggs, very little meat, some natto and tofu, some high fat, plain, organic yogurt, some fruit, mainly berries and green tea. Low fat diary is not healthy because of the high sugar content which can cause blood sugar spikes. I eat some legumes but try to keep grains very low, because they spike blood sugar.
    A biologist from the Weizmann Institute tested the blood sugar response of 1000 people to everything they were eating. One unexpected result was that brown rice raised people's blood sugar as much as ice cream. He talks about this in a TED talk on youtube. His name is Eran Segal. Grains have valuable nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and anti-cancer compounds, but they spike blood sugar and insulin and I think should be eaten sparingly.

      @@bfriedman13 It's buried in my favorites. I will try to find it. Meanwhile here is a Pub Med reference to it. I think the 1972 study was an Okinawa study. According to my Japanese friend in Tokyo, they ate root vegetables and didn't have green leafy vegetables. But they did eat seaweed, which is very nutritious. They ate a lot of sweet potatos, the native kind is not supposed to spike blood sugar, and less than half of the rice eaten by other Japanese. Very little sugar and very little grains, except for that white rice.

    whenever you evaluate meat products you need to take in to account the food source the animal was feed /pesticide/antibiotics/stress of the animal in question.
    I know its also important when you talk and evaluate plant nutrients but more often over looked when talking about animal products.
    In Denmark more and more small scale family farms are opening up with free range and grass feed beef and chickens, even in the shopping malls you can find a brand with focus on grass feed animal welfare meat, milk and butters. we actually have a HUGE problem with our Organic labelled veggies and plants when tested showing up with alot of pesticides :X we also have alot of PFOS/PFAS polluted water and ground, the responsible organic meat producers do test there grounds/water and meat and make it public but this has not at all taken of with the veggie industry yet :X not even the small organic family farms.
    industrialised plant milks you buy in the stores here in Denmark are horrible tasting, there is only one unsweetened version of almond milk and there FULL of additives.
    I only drink plant milks that i make myself, preferably Hemp because Lectins is a issue.
    from what i can see the biggest issue with both Vegan and traditional animal protein diets is to get away from pesticides and additives, most everything's processed in some way these days :X
