I can see why Rape Me can be triggering but if it makes it any better Rape Me is an anti-rape song. Kurt was very passionate about women's issues and he was a feminist.
Actually, I don't think "R@pe Me" was about physical r@pe at all. It was about journalists that he and Courtney trusted and let into their lives then turned around and betrayed them by writing articles about their drug use which led to Kurt and Courtneys child being taken away for a while. There's a few lines in the song "My favorite inside source. I'll kiss your open sores. Appreciate your concern. You're gonna stink and burn." There's an interview where he was talking about the situation with their child being taken away and he literally mentioned all the allegations were made by "inside sources" and how much they betrayed him and how he felt "violated" by their accusations and claims. But I think he went with the Anti-rape song narrative because it cleverly covered up the true meaning of the song and made it more compelling and relevant to the listening public.

I see you put suicide survivor on your thumbnail deal. My wife suceeded in suicide in 2009. We were 27 years old and high school sweethearts. We also had 2 daughter's. They were 8 & 6 yrs old at that time. I then had to get the girls to school, go to work, go pick them up an hour and a half after they got out of school. "Thankful for after school classes" go home, get home work done, cook dinner, showers, laundry, etc. Trying my best to get time off for school plays, parent teacher conferences, etc. The 3 of us formed a bond that's unbreakable. My girls are grown and gone now. I'm a grandfather at age 42. I live in vegas and go back home regularly to see my kids. It's amazing how fast that period of time went. Although some of the worst times of life, as you don't just get over losing your better half. It also taught me so much. The girls tell me all the time they're grateful for me. I laugh a bit because they helped me more then they'll ever know. My point in telling my story is this. Suicide is said to be selfish. I never knew what that meant until you no longer hear her voice calling out to you when you get home from work. Please, just think of those that love you. The pain you put them thru will be for life. Hug your mom, dad and especially your kids. Tell them you love them everyday. I do. I know this is long winded but should you get to this point and are struggling just leave a comment here and I'll respond.
Your story carries so much weight, and I can feel the strength in your words even through the unimaginable pain you’ve been through. Losing your wife, especially at such a young age, is a tragedy that no one should have to endure. But the way you stepped up for your daughters, becoming their rock while carrying that immense grief, shows a level of resilience that not everyone can muster. You didn’t just survive-you raised two strong daughters through the hardest moments, and you created that unbreakable bond with them. The love between you three is a testament to your strength and your deep commitment to them, even while dealing with the crushing loss of your partner. You mentioned something that’s often said-that suicide is selfish-and I want to gently offer another perspective. When someone is struggling so deeply, it’s not that they don’t care about their loved ones. The pain can become so consuming that it clouds their ability to see past it, making them feel like a burden, or like their loved ones would be better off without them. I can attest to that from experience. It’s not about selfishness, but rather a profound sense of hopelessness. With that being said, it’s important for others to hear what you’ve shared-that the absence is felt in every moment after. It gives a different voice for those struggling. Thank you so much for sharing.
Listen to all apologies that's the greatest song with a more polished performance on MTV unplugged, it's a perfect song about kurts yearning to feel peace
I have bipolar and i can relate to this song alot. With my own thoughts and feelings.. I been a nirvana fan for a long time. Sadly Kurt took his own life and sometimes I feel it's the best option for myself been in a dark place for a long long time. Thankyou for reacting to the song love all your reactions
I can certainly understand how going down the same path as Kurt can seem like an appealing way to escape from the darkness. The way I see it though is that, at best, you're giving into oblivion which could be interpreted as an eternal darkness) as opposed to finding the light. I promise it's there! Take it from someone who had also been in the darkness for a very long time. If you email me (in video description), I can send you my 28 Day challenge to help kick-start your healing journey!
Amanda. Thank you for this reaction. Kurt Cobain was a tortured genius, whose artistic vision spearheaded a complete paradigm shift in Rock music in the early 1990s. If you are truly interested in analyzing Nirvana music from a mental health standpoint, then I strongly recommend the song “You know you’re right.” Released years after either his suicide or demise, (depending who you ask) this was the very last song Kurt Cobain ever recorded. It may well be his most introspective song as well. Written as his marriage to Courtney Love was falling apart.
He was a genius, and he was always in pain due to a chronic illness he suffered from, which he self medicated with hard drugs, cocaine, heroin and whatnot. But he is often misrepresented as this tragic, insightful and sorrowful character, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Kurt Cobain was GOOFY as hell! He was funny, irreverent, he pulled pranks, he had an almost child-like demeanor, as per the people who spent a lot of time around him. He had a beautiful soul and the world is a lesser place since he passed.
Nirvana's one of my favorite bands, especially the MTV Unplugged in New York album. I've probably played that more than any other album. Kurt Cobain was definitely one of those poetic style singers.
Welcome to my youth, I would have been 11 at the time of this video. I had not heard this song in a really long time though so it was fun going back actually hearing this song again. as some people have mentioned Lithium is/was a treatment for bipolar disorder. i personally did not have it but my 2 other siblings were both bipolar/ADHD. I think when Kurt died It might have been during spring break for me when I was in school guessing from the date. also my youngest brother was born 1 week after he died. Also needless to say they were not invited back the next year to perform.
His bass or his amps or stage speakers didnt work anymore (one ofit i guess)because they had put it all to the max and instaead of pretending he did his bass toss that worked many times before but i guess they drank something and due to this and all the stage lights he couldnt see his bass early enough to catch it thats more or less the story if i remember right😂
School wasn't canceled for us. But they did make an announcement over the loudspeaker (high school) that anyone affected could see the school guidance councilor/therapist-person. It was such a big deal that even the grownups knew it. It was basically explained that this generations John Lennon had just died, and that clued the faculty in to just how impactful this death was to a LOT of kids.
Even though I could, well maybe, look up the meaning of this song, I choose not to, as I find it far more fascinating not knowing what it's about. The 2-chord back and forth guitar part during "I'm not gonna crack" is oddly hypnotic to me, and simultaneously bizarre given the lyrical content going on. As for the performance, Kurt slightly deviates some of the lyrics in the live version from the studio version. Why he did this, I can't really say. Boredom? His sense of humor? Could have been both. The older I get, the more strange it gets seeing a young Dave Grohl of what's now known as the Foo Fighters on the drums back in those days. This man is one of the hardest hitters in the history of heavy hitters. Krist Novoselic (the bassist) I'm sure wasn't planning on injuring himself; he was sidelined for a lil bit, but was fine all in all. He spoke about it in an interview a few times. I'm curious though; could it be possible that Kurt wrote these lyrics from a third-person perspective?
am with you, I like not knowing. I sometimes look it up after, but typically I only learn the intended meaning if someone else tells me. Now that you mention the back and forth guitar, you're right, it does have a trance like effect. Happy to hear the bass player was okay. You know me, I will worry about fictional characters on shows, people I don't know and apparently injuries from several decades ago. HAHA. Kurt writing the lyrics from third person is an interesting theory!
In my head, heart and soul, Nirvana and Pearl Jam was, and still is, most influential bands on my young age. I am from Serbia 🇷🇸, 49 young 😊,and i love your reaction!❤ My suggestion is: Pearl Jam...Dark Matter...
I've always seen this song about suffering bipolar cuz people with bipolar take lithium n that's the song title n the lyrics I can relate heavily as I suffer bipolar and had similar thoughts and experiences.
Nirvana....forever ❤. I was 16, Kurt killed himself and I remember the day very clear. Till this day I wasnt really into Nirvana. I was at school and after last lesson, on the ground of our schoolyard someone droped hundreds of little chits of paper with the letters "Kurt Cobain is dead".
I was at work when it came on the radio that they found Kurt's body and I just walked out without a word and went home and didn't leave the house or talk to anyone for 3 days
PLEASE DO MORE NIRVANA!!!!!❤❤❤ Most people I see react to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have this stigma around them that you don't have. One song I'd recommend is All Apologies. It's one of my favs. Or You Know You're Right, which was the last song Kurt recorded.
You have to remember that Kurt Cobain created characters in his songs. Essentially a persona tells the story, just like in poetry. You can not assume that the persona is the poet or writer. For instance "Polly" is written from the perspective of a man who tortures and rapes his victim. It is based on a story that Kurt read about; however, it would be wrong to assume that Kurt was the persona in "Polly", that is a sadistic murderer. "Lithium" is another such song and unfortunately many people who assume this is about Kurt's personal mental health have helped to propagate the inaccuracies about his life - and more importantly - his death. #JusticeforKurt
Kurt Cobain has had such a profound impact on my life. I know he was far from perfect and that he had flaws, but he couldn't handle bullshit and he was truly seeking out purity and raw passion in a world where everything is fake and commodified. You should watch some interviews with him. He was a really charismatic, at times funny, at times intense person/ Also, Nirvana has so many other great songs.
I'm really sorry you're feeling this way. Please remember that your struggles don't define you. The fact that you're still here shows incredible strength. There are people who care about you and resources that can help. You're not a failure; you're someone who deserves support and compassion.
Great reaction! I don't know if this is the place to suggest another song to react to, but I would love to hear what you would have to say about another song by The Who, titled "Behind Blue Eyes." It is very much on topic for your channel, I think.
There was a lot of drama at this award show. Kurt and Axl Rose were feuding. There's a story of Kurt spitting on what he thought was Axl's piano, and it ended up being Elton John's. Axl liked Nirvana, and wanted then to tour with them. Nirvana did not like what Guns 'N Roses stood for. Axl seems to have taken offense, and Courtney seems to just keep adding fuel to the fire. Some of the lyrics were altered/out of order compared to the studio version.
Quick question, do you have the lyrics on hand as you're watching? I ask cause I'm terrible at picking up lyrics the first time I hear a song, it's not where my brain focuses
I think you're almost 100% with your evaluation in terms of signs of depression, but pretty sure the 'i found god' and a couple of other lines are supposed to be completely ironic, like people saying oh if you just believe and go to church you'll feel better. Those bits are an f you to those people
That makes sense if true because Kurt did write Rape Me as a way of saying f you to rapists, as it was an anti rape song he clearly stated in an interview once. I looked up the meaning of Come as You Are and it said it was meant to be about welcoming people for who they are, and in this song I also think he meant some of the opposite things he said if that was the meaning, like when he says “come doused in mud, soaked in bleach, as I want you to be”. I think he was mockingly imitating people who are unaccepting towards others being themselves.
RIP Kurt Cobain. This is one of my favorite songs by nirvana. You should check out smells like teen spirit and come as you are next! ❤ thanks for your videos and all you do 😊
I’ve found this Channel today. I’ve seen a couple of videos of yours. Love your energy and sincere spirit. Try “The Light” by Disturbed. Trust me, you’ll be touched by its lyrics.
You HAVE to dive deep into Nirvana. So many good tunes. Also take a deep dive into his life and history. He overcome so much growing up and those who knew him closely all day he was the kindest and purest heart. On the surface it looks like he deleted himself, but looking deeper it all points to a staged su$cide set up by his wife Courtney Love.

Ai mori and Violet Orlandi have a cover of R*pe Me that is as brill9ant as it is disturbing....they take the meaning of the song and amp it up to infinity!!!!!!
As a life-long musician and lead guitar player/singer in a bunch of rock bands, and a HUGE fan of Nirvana and Kurt's song writing and lyrics (and every year on the anniversary of his passing I buy a pack of Winstons and some cheap beer and sit in my back yard and get drunk with the cat), I'm always a tiny bit frustrated when people hear Nirvana for the first time from a live show. Truth is, most of the time, Nirvana actually kinda sucked live... Kurt was often high as hell on heroin, and his voice often didn't make it thru a whole show, and frequently they sounded totally unrehearsed. The album versions are infinitely better as a first-time reference, and when you know those versions of the songs, one can appreciate the, shall we say, stripped-down version of the live shows (no layers, bad effects, no harmonies, etc.) a lot better. Besides, Nirvana live was something that one needed to experience in person, like at the B dorm in Evergreen State College in Olympia where they played more than once, along with some other soon-to-be-famous grunge bands. This is not a bad performance, but the album version is the one to be heard first. Speaking of albums and mental health, when I bought their last studio release, 'In Utero', and came home and listened to it all the way thru, I picked up the phone and called the singer from my band and said "I think Kurt's going to kill himself in the near future", to which he replied, "you heard the album too, huh?"... Listening to it, it's so obvious, there are so many signs, clues, whatever, in those songs. The very same thing was evident in the posthumously released last album of Elliott Smith, "From a Basement on a Hill", another fantastic album, grim though it may be in parts... Sorry for the long comment, but Nirvana, Kurt, depression, suicide, and mental un-health are all significant aspects of my life, and have been for a long time....
Wow, thank you for sharing such a raw and personal insight. It’s clear how deeply Nirvana, Kurt, and their music are intertwined with your life and experiences. I can understand and appreciate now the live shows being a completely different beast, often rough, unpredictable, and reflective of the chaos Kurt was going through. I'm excited to dive into the album versions in future reactions and have that comparison for myself. Hearing how you recognized the pain in In Utero as a foreshadowing of Kurt's fate speaks to your deep connection with the music. It's like you saw through the layers of angst and rebellion into the heart of his suffering. And it's heart-wrenching to realize just how much of that pain he put into his art. I'm glad that you have this music to offer validation to your own struggles, but please remember that you never have to face your struggles with a pair of headphones and a beer. You can always send me a message on IG @mentalamanda if you ever need to talk. I don't think Kurt would have ever wanted his fans to lose their battle and I think he offered his music up to help us. So the best way to honor him is to keep fighting!
Relying on alcohol to sleep can lead to several significant risks. While alcohol may initially help you fall asleep faster, it disrupts the sleep cycle by interfering with the REM (rapid eye movement) stage, which is crucial for restorative sleep. This disruption can result in poor sleep quality, leading to feelings of fatigue and grogginess the next day. Over time, dependence on alcohol to sleep can develop, increasing the risk of alcohol abuse and addiction. Additionally, regular alcohol use can have harmful effects on physical health, including liver damage, heart problems, and an increased risk of certain cancers. It can also exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. These risks highlight the importance of finding healthier and safer ways to address sleep problems, such as practicing good sleep hygiene, engaging in relaxation techniques, or seeking professional medical advice.
Lol Five whole minutes trying to explain the first verse of Lithium, a song which in words of Kurt Cobain has no sense, no explanation. Sorry for the laughs, I grew up with Nirvana and we didn't care about the lyrics too much. 😂😂😂
I think you missed the sunday reference. It has traditionally been church day. A day of worship and prayer. He is saying he does like when the bible says to be in constant state of prayer. So he does that, everyday. Not like the hypocrites who only think about God on sunday, he says it's like that every day for him, hes not scared of going to hell...why not ? Cuz "I found God"...duh
No better way to suck all of the life out of someone's art than to analyze it.But,OK.It means whatever it means to whomever it be that hears it.And he that wrote it,knows the true meaning.
I remember the rock station back home playing a parody of Eric Clapton's Cocaine, with Cobain replacing cocaine. The song was about Kurt offing himself. It was very dark considering. That was on the East Coast, and most of us didn't like grunge. I still don't, with the exception of Alice in Chains. I saw AIC open for Ozzy in 1990 or 91. Layne had his entire leg in a cast and was rolling around in a wheelchair singing. I was impressed. I'll listen to Nirvana on the radio, but to this day, I change the station or turn off the radio completely when Pearl Jam is played.

Love you haven't heard this...for many of us in the 90s this was synonymous with the first half of that decade...song was everywhere :)
The IQ of this woman is kinda intimidating, and her heart is galactic size
Definitely
WOW!!!!😮😮😮😮 It's almost as if their drummer looks like the lead singer from Foo Fighters!!! 😮😮😮😮😮 ☺️☺️☺️😉😉😉
I'm diagnosed schizophrenic. I have more friends in my head than people you have ever met
Cuckoo
That sounds very overwhelming. Are you getting treatment? If you need help finding a professional, please email me or message me on IG @mentalamanda
Definitely going to have to check that out!
Nirvana's one of my favorite bands, especially the MTV Unplugged in New York album. I've probably played that more than any other album. Kurt Cobain was definitely one of those poetic style singers.
We all miss Kurt!!! The last great Rockstar!!!
This is my 3rd favorite Nirvana song. In this order
Smells like teen spirit
About a girl
Lithium
He didn’t lose his life. He took it. From himself and his daughter and all of us.
You’d like their song Milk It off their final album.
Nirvana final song "you know you're right" was recorded in January 1994 and Kurt Cobain died in April 1994 you should react to that song.
So many stories behind this performance.
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" from MTV Unplugged is a must reaction
The bassist threw his bass into the air and knocked himself out. No permanent injury though.
His bass or his amps or stage speakers didnt work anymore (one ofit i guess)because they had put it all to the max and instaead of pretending he did his bass toss that worked many times before but i guess they drank something and due to this and all the stage lights he couldnt see his bass early enough to catch it thats more or less the story if i remember right😂
We have the Atlantic between us,so I'm not stalking you. Your channel makes me "happy"!
Thanks for the info!
Awesome reaction and commentary!!!1
Dave grohl told the story of the bassist Kris getting a head injury from that bass throw 😂
The world wept that day.
do more nirvana. i wasn't expecting such an insighful reaction to kurts music :)
It would be awesome if you react to dumb, all apologies, something in the way, heart shaped box, pennyroyal tea, you know you're right
“Hi Axel, hi Axel, hi Axel!” What a band and performance. Don’t make them like that these days.
RIP Kurdt 😢🤗🙏
Some Pearl Jam songs to maybe look into; "Indifference", "Release" and "Immortality".
Love the headphones...
Lounge Act, Drain You, Stay Away, Breed are some really good Nirvana songs.
Nirvana fue uno de los precursores principales de la musica Grunge larga vida a Kurt🎉🎉❤❤❤
I still miss hm 🖤♥. Great job on the analysis too!
The shaved head line was not the original line, he adlibbed it in.
I've tried suicide about a dozen times. I don't consider myself a survivor. More like a failure.
I'm really sorry you're feeling this way. Please remember that your struggles don't define you. The fact that you're still here shows incredible strength. There are people who care about you and resources that can help. You're not a failure; you're someone who deserves support and compassion.
Kurt genuinely thought he was ugly.
I like your shirt ❤
When do you hear Mother Mother?
Great reaction! I don't know if this is the place to suggest another song to react to, but I would love to hear what you would have to say about another song by The Who, titled "Behind Blue Eyes." It is very much on topic for your channel, I think.
You should check out Soundgarden. Try Outshined, Fell On Black Days and Day I Tried to Live.
Only for music like Lorna Shore and the heavier stuff.
You know he changed some of the lyrics in this performance
I think you're almost 100% with your evaluation in terms of signs of depression, but pretty sure the 'i found god' and a couple of other lines are supposed to be completely ironic, like people saying oh if you just believe and go to church you'll feel better. Those bits are an f you to those people
Interesting interpretation! That makes a lot of sense to me.
The Hi Axl Hi Axl part is missing😂😂
RIP Kurt Cobain. This is one of my favorite songs by nirvana. You should check out smells like teen spirit and come as you are next! ❤ thanks for your videos and all you do 😊
Dave grohl of the Foo Fighters was the drummer
I’ve found this Channel today. I’ve seen a couple of videos of yours. Love your energy and sincere spirit. Try “The Light” by Disturbed. Trust me, you’ll be touched by its lyrics.
You HAVE to dive deep into Nirvana. So many good tunes. Also take a deep dive into his life and history. He overcome so much growing up and those who knew him closely all day he was the kindest and purest heart. On the surface it looks like he deleted himself, but looking deeper it all points to a staged su$cide set up by his wife Courtney Love.
@MentalAmanda
Do "Been a Son", "Paper Cuts", "Scoff", "D7", "Sappy", "I Hate Myself And Want To Die", “Stain”, "Curmudgeon", “Mr. Moustache”, “Swap Meet”, "Very Ape".......
As for the song, it is about a man who turns to religion after the death of his girlfriend as a way to avoid suicide.
The words were slightly changed.
ok but have you noticed that the drummer looks like a younger version of the singer from Foo Fighters?

Awesome video.
Ai mori and Violet Orlandi have a cover of R*pe Me that is as brill9ant as it is disturbing....they take the meaning of the song and amp it up to infinity!!!!!!
who? what?
"Rather dead than be cool"
Drummer seems talented
Yeah, looks like he could have a future in the music biz...
😄
could you react to where did you sleep last night by nirvana on mtv unplugged
Please do Pearl Jam - "Black" MTV Unplugged and also the video for Alive
vodka helps me sleep
real
The song is actually anti rape and kurt was a well known feminist
Please react to sometimes you’re the hammer sometimes you’re the nail by A Day To Remember and All Fucked Up please
ThIs song is a bipolar anthem
No better way to suck all of the life out of someone's art than to analyze it.But,OK.It means whatever it means to whomever it be that hears it.And he that wrote it,knows the true meaning.
My channel is here to break the stigma of mental health. I use music videos suggested by subscribers to start discussions. That includes analyzing.
Ooooo is that why Britney Spears shaved her hair off ? Ha ha ha 😅😮 Ryan Barron
Vaquero Setsual
Floyd the Barber
They played the beginning just to piss off mtv
❤❤
Please react...EMINEM MOCKINGBIRD🔥🔥👍
Amanda, also, I think this is r@pe me, not lithium.
💛🌏💛
You've never listened to Nirvana?😢
I have nothing in common with you.
You're reading way too much into it.
Just listen 😮
Never listened to Nirvana!? You lost me
90s *NSync girl here from Missouri.
Fun Fact: The best thing that Nirvana came out with was the Foo Fighters.
