He's haunted by the death of his loved one, contemplating entering the cemetary gates willingly (self inflctedly) - to follow his love that was pulled away before her time, asking the reverend to save his soul from condemnation, in vain. It's deep. I lost a close friend in 2001 and thought for months about any way to see her again, any way! At the time I felt no pain, just anger. I still wonder aloud sometimes when I'm alone if she's watching over me. This song was therapy and I still cry when I hear it.

This song has an amazing acoustic intro that was cut off in the music video to save time for TV. You should definitely listen to that version

  • @CrookedEyeSniper
    @CrookedEyeSniper 7 місяців тому +3

This is the shortened version for Mtv. The album version is MUCH better with a whole intro w/ an acoustic, piano and vocal intro. It just makes it an overall complete song. This version just abruptly starts into that heavier riff without any buildup. This version is less effective because of that.
*btw: the story about your friend @ 6:22 , was something I relate can relate to. When I finally started getting my life together and decided I was not going to quit, I started viewing my past negative experiences in the exact same way that you described. I started recognizing the bad sh*t from my past as a necessary part of the story. And I decided to use them almost as a tool for my life. Today, I actually like myself, and I wouldn't be who I am today had those events never occurred. So I'm thankful. Thank you for sharing that story. ❤

Especially when it came to showing tears or compassion. It was a sign of weakness and we have to be strong or otherwise someone will take advantage of that. Oh hell yeah. Pantera. This reminds me I need to listen to "Cowboys from Hell" later on today after I get back from running errands. So this song, there's a particular line in it that reminds me of my past and I feel like I know exactly what Phil is saying here. "And when she died, I should've cried, and spared myself some pain." I've been there. More than once. More than twice. So many funerals. You get to this point after a while that sometimes, some people get emotionally numb and I've been guilty of that. It's not that I'm afraid to be emotional in front of anyone. It's that at times, I guess the easiest way to explain it is I'm "empty." Take a glass of water, and pour it out. No more water comes out afterward, right? Same concept.

Phil’s voice is so incredible. His range is incredible. He’s hitting like a G5 which is very very difficult to do. Usually when people try and hit that note it sounds very tinny but Phil nails it. I’m 46 years old,Gen X, and Pantera is still one of my favorite bands ever. I’ve seen them 4-5 times, mostly in the 90’s, and they never disappointed. “Vulgar Display of Power “ came out when I was a sophomore in high school and it’s one of the best metal albums of all time. If you have never listened to the whole album do yourself a favor a listen to it. If you are going on a road trip put that jank in and enjoy because it’s a masterpiece. “Cowboys from Hell” and “ Far beyond driven” are also amazing albums but “Vulgar” is unbelievable

Pantera was an amazing band, Dimebag was just a virtuoso on guitar. I miss him.
I’ve commented before, and you replied, and helped some. Unfortunately I’m worse now than I’ve been in a long time. I’m finding it more difficult day by day to find a reason to keep going on. If it wouldn’t leave my wife in a financial ruin, I doubt I’d be hanging on. I’m not in danger, I’m not going to do anything, but to me, I’m not alive, I’m just existing. I live with a pretty severe depression, severe chronic pain that’s debilitating and loneliness. For a married guy that’s odd to say I know, but my wife works and isn’t home much, and I’m alone 90% of the time. I have no friends here, left them behind when we moved and this small town really doesn’t have people like…me.
I feel like I’m just waiting for that inevitable heart attack to happen due to weight, pain and a very inactive lifestyle. To top that I have a major panic disorder, anxiety and agoraphobia. I’m trying to change, but money, pain, mental issues and just a total lack of motivation is really feeling impossible to overcome. We found out we owe the IRS and since we live paycheck to paycheck, we don’t have it. The stress lately has been off the charts…..which will likely lead to a really bad outcome.
Sorry…I’m just venting. I don’t have many people to confide in, and tend to trauma dump when I hit my limit. I’m sorry if this bothers anyone, it’s not my intention.

I can relate to this song in Si many levels. It reminds me of my mother.
When I was young, she was an abusive monster. I still have 100 scars in my head where I was burned with cigarettes.i won't go into the horrors of my childhood.
Later on I was introduced to satanism .I had practiced it for over 35 years bc all I knew was pain and hatred.
About 8 years ago I went to church, denounced my former practice and was saved.
My mother was very close to death, and told me she was proud of me.
About 8 months before she died we had a Conversation .
She told me when she was young she made deals with satan and promised him to get things...( To this day i believe that thing was me)..i never knew this.
In the end,her ex satanic son led her to salvation on her death bed.
The pastor went to her and told her that I forgave her for everything she had done...all is forgiven
He told her God would forgive her too.
    this song hits hard.
Who would have known it would have turned out that way ?
Now,I believe the word. Like my mother,I will unlock my door, and pass the cemetery gates

This song was written about a suicide pact between two friends of the band that only one followed through with but was written vaguely so that it removed the personal connection to the actual people involved and made the song a little easier to interpret as something not so directly based on a specific thing

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless 8 місяців тому

Unlocking the door or rolling down the windows while driving past a graveyard was a superstition considered to be introducing spirits to hitch a ride. That's why a lot of older people locked their car doors and rolled the windows up when driving past one back in the day. The POV of this song is from a grieving person who backed out of a suicide pact and is questioning faith, questioning his feelings for the other person because they didn't keep the pact and the other one did.

One explanation for the chorus I've seen is that in the area where they are from there's a superstition that ghosts will slip into your car and escape the cemetary with your help, and thus they lock their doors and windows tight when visiting cemetary.
But here the main character is unlocking the doors and then driving out of the gates, implying they are missing them so much they'd welcome even a ghost of them to come along.
Another way to interpret it would be that it's a rebellious act against established beliefs, those superstitions held by people who try to put them in line.
Sounds a bit weird, but it does explain how the chorus fits into the theme of the song.

I'm deeply sorry to hear that you've been struggling with such intense thoughts for so long. I know it's incredibly difficult to cope with. It's unfortunate that sometimes the complexity of our experiences isn't fully understood by others. It's crucial to find someone who can listen and support you without judgment. It sounds like you've tried talking to a mental health professional, but it's important to realize that not every therapist and not every treatment type is effective for every person. It might be worth looking into other options. I am so glad that you have a safe space here where you can express these feelings openly. It's an important part of the journey. Remember, you're not alone, and there are people who care about you and want to help.

You should check out The River Flows Frozen by Eternal Tears of Sorrow and Take This Life by In Flames
The River is a ballad that gets heavy as it goes but that outro solo says more than any words
And Take This Life is heavy but so are the lyrics and very important positive reinforcement in a very aggressive song

Hi Amanda, once in a while I'll add a comment. Well today is one. I think a song you should react to is Liar by The Rollins Band. I'm sure we all can relate in some way. Also the Falling In Reverse "reimagined" version of the Papa Roach song Last Resort (warning on that one, you need to be in a good place or it will wreck you). One more empowering song would be the Hatebreed song I will be Heard. Keep putting out videos! I for one appreciate you.

I'm sorry, but when it comes to the emotion of crying, l haven't been able to do it since I was 7 years old, and I'm now I'm 52 years old and I lost my 16 year old sister two weeks after my 20th birthday and I couldn't cry and still haven't plus I lost all my grandparents and my mother and still I can't cry because I was told at a young age to shut up men don't cry so I now can't and feel I don't know how too.

It's so heartbreaking that so many boys were raised with that mentality. Don't force it. Just don't repress it either. Sit with yourself. Journal in detail about these losses. Allow whatever emotions comes to come. Talk to a professional who can help you dive into your grief.

That ending is obviously just bonkers. As I understand it, Phil goes up to an E5, an F5 and even a G5. With Dimebag matching him each time on guitar. It’s so wildly over-the-top and incredible. But, I agree with you as far as tears and crying. Men and women are still held to different standards that cause harm. Males are expected to refrain from tears, which can build up sorrow inside. While females are expected to be very emotional, which can deter them from being strong. And yes, life is to be lived. The meaning of life is to live your own.

You have to react to "Asleep" by The Smiths, that is the ultimate depressing song, I dare you to put a happy, positive thought into that haha
