Okuma Akira, a real estate agent in Tokyo, takes selling property to a whole different level. He and his company make it their goal to sell real estate that the Japanese call “jiko bukken,” or “stigmatized property.” Namely, these homes had owners whose residency there have ended in suicide or murder, or whose deaths weren’t discovered until much later because these residents lived alone. We followed Akira to one such property and asked him about this niche housing market.

The apartment I'm currently staying right now, was belonged to a couple who drugged themselves to death. Been living herefor the past 16 years, not a single supernatural activities happened. As long as your conscience is clear you have nothing to be afraid of.

Means you guys are quite balanced emotionally. Usually a room with a case like that, will leave negative energy passed by the guys who died, rather than the ghost itself. Like those who live in a murder house, tend to be a murderer too as the house contains so much "anger" energy. Anyway, all the best!

That was extremely enriching. I am guilty for watching "haunted house videos" but what Okuma Akira-san said at 9:59 really caught me off-guard. The respect for the passed ones and empathy for the unfortunate family members is real. This man takes his job seriously and with ethicality.

I'm guilty as well in watching those shows but I quickly felt the same way as Akira-san did after awhile. It's so incredibly disrespectful to use the suffering of another human being's spirit for entertainment. I hate how often ghost hunters barge in and try coaxing any spirit out as if it were a pet. There's a reason why ghosts are best left alone. They suffered enough cruelty in their lives so the least we can do is respect their passing and personal space.

I used to be a big fan of haunted house shows in general until I had the realization that not only were the purported ghosts real people with often tragic stories, but that the people who call "investigators" in to look at private homes are often genuinely afraid and in need of help-often on a more personal level. And while I think in some cases, getting a "psychic" in to give some solid closure/direction can be therapeutic for a family, I agree with the man when he says some hosts just make entertainment out of these things to the detriment of others- living and dead. Now on the rare occasions I watch these shows, I lean more toward the skeptic/debunker types that mainly investigate historical institutions as opposed to private family homes. I'm usually in it for the stories and historical background anyway, not the hunt itself. Honestly, I think grief (fresh grief in particular,) illness and domestic issues are things that are best handled by family and trusted professionals, not poked fun at by random Tv/UA-cam personalities for the spooks.

my friend lived in a supposedly haunted apartment (the previous owner died in his sleep) in Japan before, because the rental price is so much cheaper and it's in central Tokyo (roughly 300 USD per month when others in the same area could reach at least 600 USD) and it was just 5 minutes walk from the University where she was studying. when she was asking the University to become her guardian for the rent contract (she's a foreign student with Japanese education ministry scholarship so she could utilize the facility) the staffs were like "oh please don't rent that place, it could be haunted and dangerous for you!". in the end she still did and lived there for 4 years without having any slightest supernatural issue... i think no matter what happens in a house before it's all about our mind, and how we treat the house. if we take care and keep it clean it won't bring negative energy..

He starts talking casually about the scene he saw, probably because he's so used to such terrible images. However, he freezes seeing the interviewer's horrified face and the little sound she lets out. He then takes his time afterwards to explain the scene slowly in parts and give her time to digest. That's a truly strong individual, who's seen it all but has not lost his strong sense of empathy for others. I really admire people like that, who don't let how awful and sad the world is stop them from being kind.

I know! It takes a lot of compassion to do this job especially in a society like Japan where just having a job like that makes people want to avoid him. I think it's implied because he works with tragic death, which is the type of death that causes angry ghosts, that people are afraid he has ghosts attached to him. So it takes a lot of courage to take a job that's going to stigmatize you as well for just having it.

People treat these houses like it's dirt. These people who died were living beings once, I feel sorry for those who died.

Doesn't mean that you would choose to live in a house where a person died.
You may not believe in ghosts, but that doesn't mean that it won't affect you mentally. The more you know about the house the more bothered you will be.
The people who believe in ghosts will be even more bothered than others about the stories, and will start connecting different health issues to the house. You might be surprised but if you have a negative mindset and you believe that something is affecting your health, your health will deteriorate. That's why a lot of people really cannot live in these sorts of houses.
KoinZell then why my friend sell back the house because she keep telling that something living with her in her house? Until one day she asked neighbour that the house was a murder house. How could she can mentally disturb even before she knew the house was haunted?
@@bepopxxx Mostly every house over 50 years of age can be considered a murder house or a house that someone died in. These negative feelings are just superstition and that's what's really causes that unease. Instead of thinking of the bad things that happened in older homes, think about the great and peaceful times the deceased may have had in them.

As a mortician, I have so much respect for this man who is selling stigmatized houses. Everyone does get creeped out or scared whenever you have a job that involves the dead, but the thing is, people often don't know how sad it can be. I hope Okuma-san is living a good and healthy life, the mental stress of having to hear about so many deaths can also be bad for you.

So that's why many Japanese choose to suicide on Aokigahara forest. They did not suicide at home to prevent the decrease price of property, so their living family can sold it without discount.

@Jon Goat A lot of people jump in front of trains in Japan as a method, it's no longer considered an inconvenience so much as it's the norm and that's probably why. A lot of people use trains in their daily life in Japan too, the UK also has a similar problem.
@Jon Goat 212 people a year was the estimate of people all the way back in 2000 when it was at five percent, families of the victims were also fined too in the documentation. Japan and (Tokyo especially) don't give out the estimated numbers of people anymore because they believe it will attract more people just like suicide forest. However people travelling by train say switching tracks because of accidents is a common occurrence.

Seeing these homes bought and lived by new people that creates new and better memories for the place, can mean that he's actually doing good for society
he's overall a business man who found a niche and who also respects the dead. For him this is firstly a business. He buys at a cheap price houses/apartments, invests a part in renovation and cleaning and finally he can sell with a good margin that house. And indeed i liked how he put the MC at her place regarding the hunting stuff. Respect for him.

It weird people get paranoid about recent death, but they never wondered a long time ago where war began, there might be human burried under the house or animal dead something like that
I think that every time someone says they are scared of cemeteries or houses where people died. Like what I have learned from history class is that earth is a bit cementery and we live and walk on them.
I think the biggest thing for me is just the thought that someone was just living there just weeks ago and a corpse could have been rotting on my floor...

The most humbling moment for me was when a teacher brought my class (only 13 of us) to a war memorial site. It was basically a cemetery for all the soldiers who'd died in our country. We were there in the daytime so it wasn't scary, but it did leave a heavy feeling seeing so many headstones, and in memory more of them were marked "Known unto God" than actually named (meaning the bodies were likely impossible to identify). Human mortality, I think, is the scary thing about subjects surrounding death. Which is why people who've died long ago and were buried aren't scary, but recent deaths still are. The idea that someone has died that close to a time where you'd probably lived a rather average day might be disconcerting.
Yes, no one thinks about that. I mean, in most larger cities you'd probably have several people that died at close to the same place, due to natural causes, war, disease and people are walking over the place of their death every day.

As a special reminder: a lot of people accidentally overdosed on combinations of drugs and alcohol. A lot of them didn’t mean to kill themselves. They tried to fix themselves but failed.
For me the sad part is that a person had died and that no one has checked on them for a long time that the corpse has started to decompose.
Now I appreciate my community and religion more.
Well, there’s a few reasons for that. 1: they’re far from their family and maybe the parents they think their child is busy.
2: the family might not care.
3: their neighbors don’t want to get involved, especially if you live in a city, it’s only when the neighbors start to smell the rotting corpse.

In reality, almost everywhere we go in the city have someone died sometime in the past, so who really cares. Especially with how expensive properties are in NY. Living in stigmatized house is better than being homeless.
I was just thinking that too. My mom passed at home from natural causes but we were with her at the time.
Indeed it's unrealistic to expect most houses to be "death free", and unless you want to start demolishing every such house (good luck with that) you'll have to deal with them somehow.

This man really changed my perspective around "haunted house shows" in just 40 seconds at the end there. They've taken the stories of a deceased loved one and made entertainment out of it when you get down to it. I've just always thought of ghosts as being so far from the actual human being that truthfully it never felt like exploitation of a person.
It takes a whole other level of mental and emotional brave to do this, the fact that he talks so calmly is just amazing especially given the history of these places he's showing.

Gotta tell you..... you guys are in the minority here. Out of the over 125 million people in Japan, they don't find any of those aspects that you just mentioned 'creepy'. Me either, but I was born there and spent most of my childhood there. 😆😆😆 But there's a lot of filtered and ambient light in most houses, depending on the architecture..... like rice paper paneled sliding screen panels and the use of natural woods and light colors. But I will have to admit, when done right...... an older traditional style Japanese (especially in a country setting) home can be a really creepy setting for a story filled with 'obake' or 'bakemono'. 👻👻👻

Oh my goodness did you see Hirokos expression when he described the dead body’s condition with the fluid and maggots? I thought she would run away she looked so uncomfortable and scared. Poor Hiroko. There are special people who can handle specific extremes in life, such as Hospice workers, doctors, etc, and obviously this guy. I had no idea a realtor would have to be this involved in a deceased body. Anyone a realtor from the USA that could explain any differences between our country and Japan in this area?
Do not forget the janitors. They have to clean up the mess that got left behind. They are the real heros.

From the crime scene cleanup videos I've seen, the cleaners generally take out the section of flooring that a long deceased person was laying on to clean up the fluids that seeped through and replace it. In this video it just looked like they cleaned the top and left the original flooring there.
The fact that these incidents still brake his heart, shows he's still emotionally aware, alive, connected...

I think it’s super interesting how the host was so shocked that western properties that may be haunted are sometimes sold at a higher value as opposed to the properties in japan where people have passed. i think maybe part of the stigma isnt just ghosts but existential fear. thinking about someone dying there. right there. and how you could die too. or how alone they were and how alone youll probably be. i think thats a little scarier to just be forced to think about every once in while than ghosts.

I remembered watching another documentary entitled Lonely Deaths. It featured japanese workers who cleaned apartments of those who died alone (not really because of suicide but sometimes just house-related accidents). It’s amazing how they do their work but at the same time, very sad.
What an honorable man for being so considerate of his work and the people suffering. He seems so compassionate for those who have lost their lives and their families and is very respectful. I wish him well.

@@0wlhexus South Korea has a higher percentage and is in the top five. I think Japan might have a longer known history of this issue and also they are known in general for the dwindling population crisis.
They should figure out a way to sale off those house and make bank.

I mean... yeah.. I live in a house where someone died alone and was left for a while before they found him.. it’s taken me a while before I got over the idea of living in a place that acted as someone’s coffin for a while. 😅 Landlords were not required to tell me, but at least I was not the immediate tenet after that man. There are good days and bad days because I don’t know if it was natural death or a suicide. 🙃 I don’t believe in ghosts, but I was creeped out several times after moving in before my neighbors mentioned that a man died here last summer. 😅 Wish me luck for more good days.
