COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is Nito reading a script? Yes. Nito wrote his answers out in English since he is not quite conversational. He uses grammarly when he writes, so he won't sound quite natural. I wanted him to speak Japanese, but he felt it was too embarrassing if Japanese people watched it. How does Nito afford to live? Hikikomori are usually supported by family. In Nito's case he was originally supported by his Aunt, but is currently living off his savings from Doujin sales. How does Nito get groceries, haircuts, etc? Nito gets delivery for groceries. He leaves once every month or two for haircuts (and presumably yearly for the doctor). Where can I find Nito's game? Thanks to everyone who funded his Kickstarter campaign, Nito made $34,000 in sales! We're so happy that this video gained so much traction. Thank you to the kind people who donated to make it possible for him to finish and publish his game. Thank you for such an interesting interview and to Nito also for participating. I found it of note that he said he doesn’t feel lonely much. I think it’s because he is always keeping his mind occupied. He is always concentrating on his task which is a bit different than other hikikomori that I’ve seen. The other documentaries I’ve seen focus more on those who are mostly unable to take care of themselves and lack motivation to be productive. His case is a bit different. In terms of productivity it seems like he is more productive than a lot of social people I know..
Thank you so much Sean for making this happen!😊 Actually I was pretty depressed when I checked my footage. Because, you know, I didn't know myself how my hikikomori life looks objectively. Thank you for sharing your Story. I'm highly impressed that you developed the game all on your own plus learning english to accomplish your goal. The Game looks very interesting and i'm looking foward to play the full version next year! I wish you the best and enjoy your snack. I don't know what it has to do with being a Hikikomori, but a Game Developer/English learning Student/Illustrator who is doing his exercises definitely deserves an eclair, or two ;)
Let's see. He's a writer, a game developer, a good artist, speaks two languages. He is not lazy, doesn't have anxiety problem, and wants to make a connection. He just can't fit to market demands and looks like he is overcoming it.

I have a friend who have been Hikikomori for about 4 Years, he never get any job or go to college in his entire life. I was helping him to find a new job but he keep refused and ignoring me. One day i started my own small business selling street food, he was my first employee. My God, i never thought he was really good at his job and helped my business to grow bigger, he even invented half of my store menu. He spent his time at home researching new recipe for my store. Now i owe him big time. This Hikikomori people it's not useless or lazy they just don't trust other people and sometimes push themselves too hard. I would love to hire them as my employee and friends.
Massive social anxiety or insecurity is what keep this talented people from doing what 'normal' people suppossed to do. I can say that seeking medications from psychiatrist or getting help from peers can change these people lives. Being shut in is a form of mental health issue, not "lazyness".

He seems lonely and sadly gets very little interaction in the year even if he wants it. This may have started out as a comfort thing, but it has evolved into routine. He can't go out into society even if he wanted to because he would be shunned for his lifestyle. I had very limited interaction for a solid 2 years and it sucked. You get sick of yourself, you don't know how to talk to people. You can't be understood because you're too low and mumble, you get flustered easily, you overthink anything that happens, you literally just sit for a while out of sheer boredom but you can't do anything about it so you just find a way to fill in the boredom. Granted I never got to this level but I was able to last 7-12 hours a day without saying a single word, which is not normal. I have gotten much better at it now over the last few years and I am so much happier in general nowadays.
He graduated from the University of Tokyo which is the best university in Japan and nr. 25 in the world ranking and he still couldn't find a good job. societal shame, it's not just a japanese thing but certainly more pronounced there. He doesn't generate income, or, in his own understanding, contribute to society. Hi im japanese. He is so much more talented than people who are concerned as HIKIKOMORI by "normal" japanese. HIKIKOMORI we discussing(and criticizing in incredibly most of case) are people who earn to small money to live alone, of course no spouse, share the house with their parents due to they have no money. Thus, the atmosphere in a house is dim and tense. Parents worry about their decendant, and HIKIKOMORI have a concern about future. The case of worse, HIKIKOMORI can't do anything but sleeping and eating so totally depending on their parents, or in some case domestic violence are seen. Moreover, the worst is the time their parents broke limit."dragger" will come home. dragger demolish the door and literally drag HIKIKOMORI out of house. Dragger promise their parents to make HIKIKOMORI suitable for japanese society. But who on earth can do so magical? In fact, some of HIKIKOMORI were found dead several monthes after. All over the world, please remind, what you saw is light side. And inevitably, light has a shadow.

He's talented in art, game design, and programming. He supports himself and doesn't mooch of public assistance. I don't see a problem really. I mean isolation can be a sign of an issue but only if it severely effects ones ability to live their life. Nito seems to be satisfied with how he's living.
If he is cool with it….it’s fine. But often it stems from the insane pressure of social and work culture in Japan, which could put even those with normal mental health may despair, be beaten down and end up self isolating. And in a less harsh culture, many would prefer more social interactions or friendships. The work culture in Japan is so difficult that if you graduate in a bad economic year and don’t get a job within a year of graduation, you are often shunned by the professional work force for the rest of your life, as there is a strong preference for hiring new grads only. And even if employed, there are strict hierarchies in which more senior workers or managers are rarely questioned (ironically, Japan work places often use outdated tech like faxes and older software, as their is resistance to change). Then add in grueling work hours, a culture of public shaming for any mistakes, etc (or so say some YT videos, O don’t know personally).

Honestly this guy's life is not _that_ bad. The fact that he wants to be independent but productive and more over be productive in what HE wants to do, not to some obligation of company, family and etc. A few things right off the bat I could see that would improve his life, a new chair, a plastic or glass chair mat so he doesn't tear up the floor, fix the floor, and a wall mounted founding table so he can have a place to eat but store it away flat against the wall as to not be in the way when he's not using it and taking a look, space it at a premium in his apartment. a few wall mounted cabinets for storage to put things away and that would go a LONG way toward physical and mental health. Other then those few things, he sleeps as much as he wants, works as much and on what he wants, eats what he wants, does what he wants for entertainment, and has at least some form of income but other then that has no obligations or responsibilities except to himself, Jesus Christ, we should BE so lucky. This man is truly free if only he would see it.
Freedom is... a tricky thing... We are humans. We are not "born" for a specific purpose, like, say a pair of scissors or a hammer... We are inherently free to choose what to do with ourselves. But freedom comes with the weight of responsibility, and people try to "find their purpose" because a life without a higher purpose is a life only you are responsible of. We don't really want to be free. We want to CHOOSE our responsibilities. Obviously, oppressed people want different responsibilities than the ones they're forced into, and FREE people want responsibilities that have nothing to do with themselves. Freedom is not the goal. The goal is to choose the responsibilities you're comfortable with. Freedom only lets you have the privilege of choice... I wander a lot, not because I like it, but because there are days in which I have to go outside, but I have nothing else to do... On my long walks through the cities and parks, I have come up with a phrase that expresses why freedom is so confusing, at least to me: "Sometimes you're not lost. Sometimes you know exactly where you are, but you don't have anywhere to go..." In the end, we are DOOMED to be free... We are DOOMED to CHOOSE. Using your freedom to commit and take the responsibility of your choices is the first step to truly be happy... (The second step is choosing the right things. Hint: it's NOT what will make you feel good in the short term.) There is always a choice to be made.

They see not from their own shoes, but the shoes of the guy next doors moms cousins best friends sister, who isn't even in the same country. lol My point is they can find flaws in every moment, most people will go an entire lifetime without discovering.

Guy: *makes cool art and games and supports himself financially* Society: "That's cool bro, what studio or company are you with?" Guy: "I work from home alone." Society: "UNACCEPTABLEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
Let's be honest, this guy is a talent. He gained so many skills (drawing, coding, game developing etc.) all by himself with pure hardwork. Now with the new norm of WFH, I see a bright future in this man. You do not need to be physically in the office/workplace for game developer; and he seems perfectly fine with talking to people via video chat. There is nothing wrong with being a hikikomori; neither is there anything to be ashamed about for drawing porn (what are we in the medieval era?) It's might sound like a stretch but the main motivation for life at the end of the day is all about procreation and sex, what's wrong with using artwork to satisfy this fundamental need? Plus, he is not leeching off the society, on the contrary, he is earning his own living and contributing to the society with his artworks. Everyone has their own way of living. As long as no one is affected negatively, I say let's live and let live.
@@kittenmimi5326 all we're saying is, becoming a hikikomori doesn't always mean failure. If you can manage things well, and have the right talents, you can be a hikikomori and be successful.

In summary he feels that he can use his gift and life to create positive and healthy stuff rather than use his talents to hook more people into the dark and hollow world of porn. (I was a porn addict myself and stopping this addiction has made me whole again)
He has such a disciplined lifestyle even though being a hikikomori, eating healthy meals, exercising, learning new skills and pursuing his dreams. Honestly I feel the work culture and companies out there missed a potential creative talent right here.
As a less-than-a-year game dev, I think his skills will definitely be valuable to game dev studios anywhere, AAA or indie. We have indeed missed a potential talent right here.

Live like that, then we talkin. Man, come on, ok with the independent and all that, but, most beautiful times in life are always sharing with people you love, you take that out and what, just doing things to get money and keep eating? just that? what a lame existence.
The amount self-discipline he shown when nobody is watching(other than this video of course) is simply amazing and inspiring.. Remind me to get sh*t done and stop making excuses
I think Nito just realized that the world is full of bullshit and he couldn't be bothered. He is putting effort into something he believes in and living a lean lifestyle to see it to fruition, this is something so few people are able to do. Hope he finds a talented team to continue working on his dream. Good interview! Hmm, was wondering why he didn't move to a cheaper country since he is working from home.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Nito reading a script?

I found it of note that he said he doesn’t feel lonely much. I think it’s because he is always keeping his mind occupied.

On my long walks through the cities and parks, I have come up with a phrase that expresses why freedom is so confusing, at least to me:
"Sometimes you're not lost. Sometimes you know exactly where you are, but you don't have anywhere to go..."
In the end, we are DOOMED to be free... We are DOOMED to CHOOSE.
Using your freedom to commit and take the responsibility of your choices is the first step to truly be happy... (The second step is choosing the right things. Hint: it's NOT what will make you feel good in the short term.)
There is always a choice to be made.

Not sure about making mangas, but making video games alone is a pretty risky endeavor. Those who are successful by starting with no prior experience or degree are very few. It's about the same as planning to become a streamer as a full time job when you don't have any audience yet.
This is basically is during the pandemic
Us* hehe sorry typo
why are you literally *everywhere* seriously ive been watching youtube videos all day in the most random corners of a random feed and you have comments underneath all of them
im honestly not upset im just super worried

You again
Here again..
Gameplay footage looks good. I’d love to play it
It only comes out April 2022 according to steam
Demo is up now @Amos
I played the demo and it's utter trash.
it looks like one of those mobile game ads
@@brothercharanus1927 easier to play a game then make it, you miserable cretin
Wow, he's learned so many skills by himself! I will support him by getting his game when it's out. It's fascinating to learn about the creator behind it.
"Drawing porn is not fun for me. I can't find the meaning of life there." - Brutally honest.
Nito eat healthy, do some exercise and work at home. Sounds like people nowadays with the pandemic
I guess He somewhat more productive and healthier than the average people in lockdown got seemingly fatter, I noticed this a lot from my close friends who used to be thin before the pandemic
@@zeolol9817 bizarrely, a good chunk of people slimmed down or even became fit during the pandemic too.
@@shiny_teddiursa I may be at a higher weight since the pandemic started, but I'm MUCH fitter than I was.
@@shiny_teddiursa probably almost died of boredom. Im thinking those people are mostly extroverts lol
What pandemic
Mad respect for this man. Just said “Yeah outside ain’t for me” and then just flourished
Wish I could do that
❤
Flourished? He seems to be barely getting by. Don't idolize this type of life.
@@Gyvulys he said just flourished . he seems like the type to say life is hard and i say compared to what?
@@Gyvulys if he is Happy living like that then its ok
Man he looks so cozy and comfy and he just works his own schedule, gets the recommended amount of sleep, eats decent food, ain't robbing anyone, he ain't homeless, he's got his necessities, he's making a living and looks pretty happy, I would totally do this and not be super upset about it.
I concur with you! He is being himself without hurting anyone.
If only this was socially acceptable!
@@heypiggy why does this needs to be socially accepted if he meets no one?
@@heypiggy the point of his lifestyle is that he doesn't need the approval of society
Live like that, then we talkin.
Man, come on, ok with the independent and all that, but, most beautiful times in life are always sharing with people you love, you take that out and what, just doing things to get money and keep eating? just that? what a lame existence.
Realy glad a I came across this documentary ❤️ Real journalism. Well done and especially thanks to Nito ❤️👌
It’s incredible how he has been isolated for years and he has better English than most Japanese.
Agreed
He obviously reads it from the screen
English is everywhere online, it's not too surprising
The amount self-discipline he shown when nobody is watching(other than this video of course) is simply amazing and inspiring.. Remind me to get sh*t done and stop making excuses
@@billyj.causeyvideoguy7361 yeah man so true
Same here dear, same lmao. Excuses fucked my plans up
I think Nito just realized that the world is full of bullshit and he couldn't be bothered. He is putting effort into something he believes in and living a lean lifestyle to see it to fruition, this is something so few people are able to do. Hope he finds a talented team to continue working on his dream. Good interview!
Hmm, was wondering why he didn't move to a cheaper country since he is working from home.
