Being Homeless In Japan | THE VOICELESS #20

  • Homelessness is a major social issue that probably exists in every major city around the world. But in Japan, this issue is something that rarely gets talked about, to the point we were almost convinced that there were no homeless people in Japan until we saw them with our own eyes. It is estimated that there are over 1,500 homeless people in Tokyo but the truth is, no one knows for sure how many there are or how they became homeless. So we hit the streets of Tokyo to see if we could interview some homeless people to get their insight, but then we quickly came to realize how difficult it was because none of them wanted to show their face on camera. But after spending hours searching and getting turned down by them, we finally managed to find someone who was willing to talk with us.

We want to thank Mr. Kawamoto Kazuo for sharing his story. We also want to make it clear that even though the homeless people we approached at the beginning of the video turned us down for an interview, they did give us their consent to show their faces. While Mr. Kawamoto's story does not reflect that of the entire Japanese homeless population, we hope you found his story insightful. If you think what we are doing is making a difference, let us know what other social issues we should tackle next and be sure to subscribe so we know that you are a part of our community. Thanks for watching and stay curious!

He most likely was extremely moved by their kindness and didn't want to shed tears in front of them. @@chhunkoungseng9364 I think you're misunderstanding. In asian culture, "not overcoming unfortunate circumstances" can be seen as "failure". To them failure is anything that brings shame to their face (their image, the way they are viewed by society on a whole, and the way the public views their family as a byproduct.) That's just Asian culture. You suck ir up ans keep up appearances no matter what. You never admit defeat of any kind. Some do, yes, they are more progressive these days, but its still a generally large thing for this man to admit his circumstances, which can be viewed as "failure" by Asian. I don't the original commenter was calling the man's circumstances failure in the sense you think they were. They weren't saying he was a failure, they were saying for a Japanese man to admit what is seen in their culture as failure is a big thing.

When he can't look at the people in the eyes at the end, and walks away, my heart breaks. A lot of homeless people are like this. Or they are in my city.
I accidentally made a young man cry when I gave him cans of dog food for his companion but honestly I've seen him help people walk up and down those steep stairs he always slept close to so many times and he never accepted money for his help so I thought that was kind of the only option to help him a little bit too. After that I would do this about once a month, I was still a broke teenager but even I had to maybe 5€ to get a weeks worth of dog food and even some extra.
He eventually found a job and an apartment with the help of an organisation in the city, saw it in an article online a few years ago and it made me very happy.
I could have ended up homeless just earlier this year if I didn't have support from friends and a tiny bit from my mother until that welfare money finally kicked in.
Still have to pay back that debt but thankfully they are ok with me making small payments. Not everyone is that lucky and that's how some great people end up in a really bad situation.

I appreciate and feel for the homeless in Japan. Funny enough in my time in Tokyo at Ueno park (where this looks like it was mostly filmed) I met these two homeless guys at the workout station. I knew they were homeless but we never spoke about it. So every time I would go work out at Ueno, I would go to Family Mart or 7-11 and load up on some onigiri and a bunch of other goods. Even some beer and sake (which I would NEVER do in the U.S, give a homeless person alcohol). And every time I left the station, and if I saw them I would leave the bag their for them. The first time they thought I left it by mistake but after the 2nd time, they knew the drill. The day before I left Tokyo, I left the two homeless guys (who worked construction) some clothes (from Don Quijote also) and some extra food for the next few days.
In typical Japanese fashion they held back their tears and emotion, I could tell they wanted to give me a big hug. Non-the-less, they were extremely grateful and kept saying "arigato gozaimasu".
Since I am not in Japan as much as I want to be, I haven't seen them since I returned to Ueno. So I hope they are doing well.
It's hard for me to be close with homeless people here in the U.S. Yes, NOT ALL but so many homeless people are hard-core drug addicts and aren't very grateful for anything, despite the conditions they are in. I still do my best to volunteer and contribute for the homeless but I find it hard to not find a homeless person in big U.S. cities who aren't ungrateful drug addicts.
