    I like relicing when it's done properly but sometimes this is painful to watch! Great results, though.

    Dr. Nitro, I most sincerely doubt there is anyone more capable than or better than you! Your guitars are absolutely breathtaking!

    Curious what the heat does before you use the scotch brite or the M3 0000 pad? Does it soften it so it mattes the paint better?
    I have a 2005 LO standard in trans amber that has a lot of great natural wear but the thing is just still so glossy it looks awkward, so I’m debating knocking back the gloss to dull the finish a bit.
    I also wish it would check so bad.

    Doesn’t anyone relic a guitar by playing it anymore?
    ✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 I’m just saying I wouldn’t do this myself, you done a few guitars and you’re very good. Leave it to a professional like yourself.

      Yes, when you have only one guitar with hard nitro.

    It took me forever to allow things to happen randomly. I've seen poor relic work that have very noticeable patterns. There are specific areas that wear will occur but belt wear and scratches have to be random. Your work is every bit as good as I've seen from the Murphy Labs.

    Fantastic videos my friend. You do great work. Do you know if the freezer checking method works on new gibson nitro? Or will it be too thick? I have a SG Special body which i want to throw in the freezer....

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you. Modern Gibson nitrolac has an extremely high amount of plasticizer, so it is soft and sticky. I recently tried aging a Gibson SG with the original gibson nitro. The temperature was minus 24 degrees Celsius, in two cycles of 12 hours. And not a single crack in the varnish. Unfortunately, this is so. But you can always try.

      @@8BombCustom Update: Just received the Inverness green SG special a couple of days ago and had a go in the freezer - a handful of dispersed cracking around the whole guitar - gonna try a few cycles to see if i can get some more! I laid the guitar to rest in my bathroom (around 25c) for a few hrs then put it into the freezer (-18C). Vertical checking just like i hoped 🙂

    This is amazing to watch! The detail you go into to give it a naturally worn look is dedication to your craft!!!

    Your work is amazing. I have a 2003 LP that has naturally checked, but all the checking runs horizontal with the grain. It looks great, but I wonder often why I see so many others that run in the opposite direction, across the grain. I watched your efforts here and again I see the checking seems to be in the other direction. Is this just how it happens? Keep up the great work!! Thank you for posting and the fine translation to english!

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  2 роки тому +7

      Thank you. I've seen examples like this with cracks in the lacquer along the grain and I have a couple of these guitars. Such cracks indicate that the wood of the guitar has been exposed to a strong drop in humidity and drying out. There were several such cycles. The wood fibers expanded too quickly and contracted strongly when dried. Therefore, cracks in the varnish turned out parallel to the texture.

    Nice job Dr. Nitro, but relicing a guitar is just a fad in my opinion. It's doesn't hold the value or appeal of a naturally played and worn guitar.

    All this to lie and say "I used to play in a band"? As a musician I cringe at this. You better play like fucking lightning in a bottle you show up with this shit. I have a 1981gibson I played for 15 years in a band sometimes two bands at once and I haven't come close to wearing through the paint.

    The checking (cracks) look great, how long did you leave it in the freezer for?
    What type of relic/wearing will you do for the neck?
    I just played a Murphy labs 59 (heavy aged) a hour or so ago, the neck and feel was amazing
    All this hard work really does improve the feel of the guitar

  • @kellymason55

    Natural aging occurs with hardware on the guitar. It would naturally be aged to a lesser degree under these components - under stop bar, bridge, pickup rings, etc. Overall looks very good, though.

      Yeah, people like the look. I do too, but if it's not real it doesn't have the same feel. It's kinda cool I guess, but the novelty of vintage guitars is in their history. Not all those wonderful hours of rubbing sand paper and loose screws on it 🤦
