Cast Light Lures with a BAITCASTER! (Tips & Casting Demonstration 2018)

  • The stick bait and fluke are two of the most productive soft plastics on the market. Fishing said lures weightless is common, however, casting them is another issue. Some anglers prefer to use spinning tackle and there is NOTHING wrong with that. However, I prefer to use a baitcaster whenever possible. I like the power, accuracy, and comfortability that baitcasters offer.
    Join me as I walk you through picking the appropriate reel, line, hook, lure, and rod to make casting weightless lures easier. We'll also head outside for some field testing and casting techniques!

    I am 68 yrs old and been fishing since I was 8 when my dad took me on his 24’ Chris Craft to Catalina Island in SoCal (Southern California) for Bluefin Tuna. I was hooked by the size of fish caught and the adventure of offshore fishing. Fishing in a body of water knowing that at best the fish will weigh 5-10# was not inspiring.
    I retired 10 yrs. ago from San Diego and moved with my wife to mainland Mexico where I’ve been throwing big poppers, buzz bombs, and heavy jigs for Roosterfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail and Dorado from a kayak or boat. Name of the game is distance, get the jig asap on the birds/boil. No spinning gear here.
    We have recently moved back to the states to become grandparents. My wife asked where do you want to live? Well California was a non starter and I have a bucket list of fish I have never caught being a westcoast fishermen. I said Florida. I have never caught a Redfish, Speckled trout, Cobia, Tarpon etc. one little problem is my gear is for offshore. My wife rolled her eyes when I explained that I had to buy a new arsenal of rods and reels. So a new Piscifun Torrent casting reel and 7’6” Torrent mhf rod arrived yesterday (better gear later), and I took my knowledge and loaded it up with 30# braid, 1/8th jighead with soft plastic, set the tension and number 5 on the magnetic brake and let her rip! POW! My educated thumb failed. The cast went all of 10 yards and I had to de-spool the braid and throw it away. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks.
    Cleaned up the gear and came into the house and put on UA-cam looking for tutorials on the do’s and don’ts of Baitcasters. Found your site and will practice until I get it right. Your video’s were great and easily understood. More like this would be great. Thanks again....tight lines

      Sounds fun but I'm the other way lol. I have absolutely no interest in saltwater fishing lol. All I want to do is go after bass, walleyes, trout and and other freshwater fish. Maybe it has to do with where we are raised. You being from California are more prone to ocean fishing and ne being from the mountains of West Virginia I'm more prone to freshwater rivers amd lakes. I have saltwater fished on vacation a few times and it was fun. But it didnt come close to freshwater for me

    Thank you soooo much for being VERY thorough but MOST OF ALL for instructing us in what to do in the event of the start of an overrun or backlash and distinguishing at what point of the cast is controlled by what part of the reel! There are tons of "how to learn a baitcaster" type vids out there but yours is one of the very few that actually tell us "how to fix this if this starts to happen in the ____ of the cast". Excellent job! Thank you for paying attention to what others apparently didn't!

    I just re-watched this video and found a whole new appreciation for it. I've been having baitcasting issues lately, and it seems that I have just sort of forgotten the fundamentals. It is good to go back and remind yourself from time to time how to do things the RIGHT way, as over time your bad habits just seem to get entrenched. At least that is true for me. This is a really excellent instructional video. If I could give this a second like, I would!

    WOW! Fantastic instructional. This could be one of your best videos. I’m really going to try all of these modifications. The light spool with smaller diameter line with slack in the line with a heavier wire hook seems like common sense yet I really didn’t even think too much about it. The “tennis racket” and “dart throwing”technique are excellent memory cues to keep in mind that I’m definitely going to try. Thank you for sharing this info and for making such an intricate procedure a little more simplistic.

    Hey Debo, I subscribe to your channel and mostly just wanted to thank you for your content and teaching style. After 30 years of mostly finesse fishing with a spinning reel, I have really gotten into a bait caster with DC breaks to throw weightless soft plastics. I have the Shimano Scorpion DC (Japanese version of the Curado DC) and highly recommend this reel. Much smaller learning curve and more versatility out on the water.

    I used to get so frustrated fluke fishing, I love to fish a fluke in the fall. Just doesn't doesnt don't justice with a keel weighted hook. I always thought the flukes we're harder to throw weightless then a stick bait even. For the longest time I was just making short casts or skipping with a spinning reel, sucked...was a disaster lol As time went on I found for me anyways ..a medium heavy FAST action ,helped me so much, I figured out a longer rod 7'3 instead of 7'0. nowadays I don't think I use under a 7-3 for anything. Debo you the man! Just arent any other UA-camrs that are as elaborate as you, very few. Your presentation, the close ups...it's just art man! Thanks for your hard work!

      They have a centrifugal brake too with interchangeable "brake pads" and even came with a leather case, brake shoes (pads) and a combo wrench/screwdriver. For their era they were fairly pricey but made to last forever. Today's reels can't compare to the quality and long life.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  6 років тому

      Bob Dashiell oh ok. I had one a long time ago but from what I remember it didn't have adjustable brakes. I ended up moving to a quantum I believe which was like a big current-day baitcaster. Yea, those things were built like tanks!

    I use weighted ewg for my light lure baitcast. Allows a thinner profile hook while giving extra weight. I'll even peg a small bullet sinker or use a split shot for more weight.
    It's definitely a versatile lure that ol' senko.

    Another good video! I love fishing senkos, soft swimbaits, and other stick-type baits weightless, I use braid, but this will be my first season adding fluorocarbons and copolymers. Making practice cast, I see they definitely have different characteristics (line memory and all). I also find I have to use more spool tension on my Stealth, maybe due to the light spool. Have you done a video on lowering line memory in fluorocarbons and copolymers, such as with line conditioners and prestretching?

      Russell Anderson I've actually been thinking about that. I don't know how much of a difference reel magic makes but I use it. I do stretch my pitching setups for sure. I don't worry about it on my moving baits because they are always under tension. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to think on that! Appreciate you watching and commenting!

    Another thing about casting weightless baits is the shape of the bait also effects how the bait cast as well. A bait that's slim is much more aerodynamic than a bulky bait, which cast much smoother and farther.

    Wondering if you only use right hand reels? I converted over to left hand versions so that I am not having to keep switching the rod back and forth between my left and right during the cast and reeling process. Perhaps it is because I have used many spinning reels over the years also so I feel comfortable reeling with my left as well. Now it feels cumbersome when casting one of my right hand bait casters. Great info in your video.
    Thanks

      Thanks for watching my friend. I have a lot of people ask me that. It's just the way I learned. I actually have been using left hand reels and it feels pretty good for cast and retrieve baits. I prefer the right hand retrieve reels when I need a hard hookset.

    OK. You are obviously very knowledgeable. Your explanation was great. What I want to know is why even use the bait caster for this application? Why not use a spinning rod?

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  6 років тому

      Bill Palmisano thanks again for watching. You definitely can use a spinning reel. But i only carry one spinning combo for finesse. I fish around a ton of heavy wood and vegetation and feel much more comfortable fighting those fish on a heavier casting setup. But you can most certainly throw it on a spinning combo. I throw my weightless baits on 15-20 lb fluoro.

    awesome Video Debo. I personally grew up using Spinning rods since i'm from the North (North Dakota) its more of a tradition. But since I was like every other kid who was glued to the tv watching the pros I now use 90% bait casting setups. But when I throw a weightless senko I still revert back the the spinning rod. I love to skip senkos way back around cover. Do you find that skipping weightless baits a lot tougher with the bait casting setups??

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  6 років тому +1

      Preston Outdoors once I get in the groove, no. I don't have to do it a ton so it takes me a little to dial in. I always go to a 6" bait if I'm skipping. The biggest thing is STAYING PARALLEL when casting. Also, don't set you tension too high or you will power cast/overcast and be sure to FOCUS exactly where you want the bait to hit. I'm really bad about that and it will throw off the skip all sorts. I'm no master at it but I'm going to keep working those. Thanks for taking the time to watch brother!

    • @PrestonOutdoors
      @PrestonOutdoors 6 років тому +1

      DEBO'S Fishing I see what you mean. Last year I tried hard to learn how to skip a jig around docks with a bait caster and had some success but not a pro by any means. But using a 5” senko on my spinning set up I’m very confident and pretty good at skipping that bait in tiny holes. And don’t have to worry about back lash

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  6 років тому +2

      Preston Outdoors absolutely nothing wrong with using a spinning setup for that! It's less of a headache and you don't have to worry about a catastrophic failure. I'm not sure why there is such a stigma around spinning setups? A fish in the boat is a fish in the boat!

    • @PrestonOutdoors
      @PrestonOutdoors 6 років тому

      DEBO'S Fishing I know right? Growing up in the North I grew up with a spinning rod in my hand lol but it gets a bad rap from a lot of southern guys. I love using bait casting set up so I was just wondering if you had trouble with back lash or not

    I use a Shimano Chronarch CH-200 loaded with 40lb J8 braid on a ten foot Shakespeare telescopic surfcaster to lob 2 inch goldfish dropshot lures (with no weight on them whatsoever) over my local river, the trick is to use that spool tensioner to prevent backlash, the rest is in the wrist.

    Hey man I got a bait caster and I was thinking about using my spinning reel for all my soft plastics and leaving my bait caster for frogs ,toads, hardbaits ,spinner baits, and jigs. I though about using both since i can have two different style of rigs tied and when I get bored of one I use the other one

    • @DEBOSFishing

      Gene Villarreal no man, it's all personal preference. If you use your right thumb to press the thumbar and cast, it's more efficient with the handle on the left because you don't have to switch hands. But it's really what you're comfortable with!
