    Travis as someone living in the UK wanting to use a baitcaster (from Cabela's) I have found your video to be the most instructive and useful from all those on UA-cam. Thank-you so much for helping me to learn how to use a baitcaster while minimising the possibilities of getting a birds-nest! I hope others find your video, as it really is excellent for the beginner and you use a left-hand wind, which is the logical choice for right-handed anglers like me who typically use fixed-spool (spincasters) reels. I have never understood why so many Americans use right hand wind reels when clearly they are right-handed. 😉

      Agreed on the left hand. It's wasted motion to switch hands and doesn't feel natural to me, a born righty.
      Awesome to hear as that was my goal. Baitcasters were always made out to be intimidating and really, they don't have to be, there is just some ins-and-outs to learn. Really happy it helped.

    picked up a baitcaster as a little christmas present to myself after wanting to make the jump for a couple months now. this is easily the most compact, thorough, and easiest to understand video on youtube for all the basics. thanks a ton for this

      I appreciate it. I hope the new baitcaster catches you some tanks in no time. Set the tension, set the drag, set the brake, cast like you know you should 💪

    Travis, thank you for posting this. I am brand new to baicast reels and this is the best instructional vidoe I have found.

      Thanks. It really does mean a lot to hear that. Baitcasters are amazing and nowhere near as frustrating as people make them out to be.

    In about an hour I went from only able to cast 12 feet, to being more accurate than with my spinning rods. The accuracy alone is worth learning it.

    After a few years of fishing with my son on a more regular basis during summer months, I bought myself my first bait aster last weekend. We use spinners, but I seen guys use the baitcasters more and more. I’m not gonna lie, I’m terrified, thinking all I’ll be doing is picking out backlashes, rather than fishing, but with your video and a heck of a lot of practice this spring, I’m hopeful to really limit them. Thanks for a short, memorable informative video on how to set up and get started in my backyard. I’ll be referencing this quite a bit, just gonna be a while before I can get out, still a little nipping here in Michigan. Tight lines, brother!

      It's more imitating than anything. I would bet that after an hour or two of casting, you won't understand why people thought it was hard.
      I appreciate it man. All I want out of my channel is to spread what I have learned. I really enjoy knowing it helps. Tight lines indeed sir.

    Thanks for that great video 🙏, I used to go fishing with my grandfather almost every single days when I was young , when he passed away I stopped fishing and didn’t touch a rod for 25 years. This year I started again and ho boy I still love it so much , but I have no clue about fishing with bait caster , this week I bought my first bait caster rod and reel but I’m literally afraid to use it , so thank u so much for all those great tips … next week I’ll try 😵‍💫😵‍💫🤪😵‍💫😂

      Those memories stay with us right. I really appreciated you sharing with me, I love to hear this type of stuff.
      Just remember, by the end of the day, you are going to have the baitcaster down. It doesn't take long to get into a rhythm once you find it.
      You could also do like I didn't take an old pot out to the yard, start it 40-50 foot away, and cast a few times. I like it when I sink it perfectly and her the loud ding. Great way to practice IMO.

    We are not splitting wood, gentlemen. We are fishing LOL! 🤣🤣🤣 Personally, I have mastered dumb ass-ery with baitcasters. One day I will try again. I love me spinning reels still. Great pointers on baitcasters though, Travis 👍🏻❗️

    Fantastic overview. I am a spincaster guy only and pretty much use it for everything regardless of size, weight and species. While a disagree that spincasters can't handle some baits / fish, I just haven't seen it and if I am catching 20 to 30 pound pike I definitely want a spincaster in my hands. I do agree that baitcasters are way more acurate, but haven't seen many other advantages.

    • @TravisDoesKayakFishing
      @TravisDoesKayakFishing  11 місяців тому

      Nothing wrong a little difference in fishing communities. We use pretty light spinning reels, lightest we can the drag on those doesn't really reach what a saltwater model would. Same with the speed. Topwater can be done on a spinning rod, but the experience is much on a super faster baitcaster. I love both and they have their places. But fishing jigs in brushes, umbrella rigs, glidebaits, or swimbaits, no way. Baitcaster all day on those.

      I am onboard with it. I need to clean up some things to feel like I have it dial in, but I think I have my unboxing and reviews almost where I feel good about them.

    Man come on brother..those push buttons (you just threw like a branch) are the best, haven’t you watched my video “Bass Fishing Stick marsh with Vintage Rod”? Man I put a hurting on them bass, ok and maybe the rod too..🤣 Awesome job explaining the bait casting reels Travis, although I learned I been doing it all wrong all these years lol..that definitely put things in perspective. I used to use Baitcasters mainly before I moved here but now I trout fish mainly so Spinning Reels are my rod of choice. I think every combo has a place for it but if you fish mainly for bass then yeah Baitcaster is the way to go in my opinion. Nice job brother!

      Mothing wrong the occasional spincast haha. I was probably a little harsh on it. We all started there and they still have use cases for almost everyone. But for bass fishing, I am grabbing a spinning or baitcaster. If I had a quality spincast, I might feel different ya know lol.

    Remember that with a faster gear ratio you lose the winch effect of a low ratio. You have more torque with the lower ratios and that could be more important than speed. It IS more important to me. I play my game in the saltwater and I might have to PULL a large fish out from under a dock or bridge or rocks. I wish low profile baitcasters would come with 2 speeds like some offshore reels but there's no room.
    I need a saltwater version of a baitcaster with a flipping switch for flounder jigging. I hope to find a medium speed reel and get the best average of speed and torque.

    • @TravisDoesKayakFishing
      @TravisDoesKayakFishing  11 місяців тому +1

      You are right. Even freshwater I find myself looking for low 6 ratios to fosh cranks 16+. It's a huge difference in effort required and power.
