You make it look so easy, lol! I am amazed how everyone but myself can precisely know exactly when to hurry and use your thumb to stop it so it will not backlash! I guess it's all about timing, I mostly seem to fail and it's frustrating!
easy? was it because the spinning round house kick cast? LOL. The key is to first figure out how to setup the brakes and cast it so that it will come out and not backlash. it wont' go far, but from there you lower your brakes and then listen and watch. you will get it trust me! you can try spooling up with 14 lb mono and practice. it's cheaper and easier to un-knot compared to thinner lines. use lures that can cast easily and not screw up by catching air as described in the video.
When I stared using baitcasters years ago I almost quit because of how it seemed that no matter what I did I would still get nasty birdsnests. I stayed with it though and now I would never go back to spinning gear for most situations. It really has a pretty long learning curve, but stick with it and you will never go back.
The advantages of making a long cast are helpful for many situations. However, casting to close targets first before making longer ones catches more fish on average. The reason is you may be missing fish much closer and may spook ones you might have caught. Light spool tension provides less drag and friction on the reel spool improving distance. However, too little causes spool vibration and causes excessive wear to the reel. A slight amount of spool tension will reduce the sound and wear on the reel. During a day of fishing it might require adding slightly more as the tension often loosens. Cleaning and adding a drop of lubricant to the ends of the spool reduces wear and friction. Recommending running dry bearing doesn’t mean neglecting lubing the contact points of the spool. Reels use in dirty water conditions need more attention than ones used in clear water conditions.
very wise suggestion! Often enough people target far and never close. I flip and pitch frogs before too in spadderdocks by the bank that is in front of me as snakeheads always hide in there. they just don't bite as often, but they do lurk and most people would find out that they spooked one or two walking close to the banks. But this weekend i landed a 7lber casting and close to spooling myself with this reel. saw the pod of babies and then this huge submarine came out of no where like a whale. it paused when it surfaced and then flared it's fins with a perfect mohawk! I made my cast and landaed 2 feet from the pod, dragged my lure over it and it blew up on it so hard! Oh yeah some of my cheaper reels with no clicker on the tension knob seems to loosen up fastest. Normally at the end of my fishing session i notice it loosened a bit and more backlashes. So every time i go out, i always check at the start of my trip and re-tune the reel.
I have a lews carbon fire with a 7ft med heavy fast action rod and 12 lb mono on it. I can only cast like 30 yards with a 1/2 ounce jig don’t know what the issue is. Used to be able to cast 50 yards on my old abu

Overfilling the spool is an overlooked reason why backlashes happen because it has too much inertia (heavier spool). Making sure you don't fill it past 1/8 of an inch below the spool helps with performance significantly. Reduced inertia also means the brakes can be more effective because they don't have as much weight to stop. This also of course means you probably won't have to use as much force to get the same if not greater distance. Tight lines out there!
It can be the case indeed for some spools and braking systems. This spool here is light and allows frogs to fly! I can spool myself filled to the rim on 40lb braided line
