Was a lineman for a over three decades and what you term as a "lineman's belt" is actually called a lanyard (flip line in arborist community). In the old days, we used a heavy, flat, rubberized piece of webbing with snaps on each end to hitch hike up a pole. It was simply called a safety. A lineman's belt was what we climbed in, similar to a tree saddle with no leg straps. As Urban Hunter says, NEVER use non locking carabiners for life support. There are many different styles and brands of flip line slack adjusters, the Ropeman is one.
GET OUTDOORS!!! Best words I have heard from a youngster in years!! The prussic knot is one of the handiest knots EVER!! I use one on my lifeline, have one for linemans belt to set up sticks and set stand, and lower stand same way... simple!! I do like that fancy one tho and imagine in a saddle it is probably best!!
I’m an arm amputee and currently hunt out of a climber stand. I want to get into saddle hunting. I am a rock climber so I do have climbing experience and knowledge in knots and I can belay. But haven’t seen saddle hunting setup in person. I think I can do all the steps but what I see might be a challenge is getting the linemen rope to slide up the tree. Any suggestions? I also shoot a compound bow with one arm.
I just bought this set up with the rope man 1, and it’s just as he says. Now when I set my tree stands I don’t worry about falling and becoming a paraplegic...!!!
Dude, I'm excited and depressed at the same time. Just got a Ropeman 1 in the mail and tested it out. Man! So awesome. Almost a "must have" piece of gear. I'm just depressed I've been missing out on it all these years.
Nice video. I would recommend an auto double locking carabiner instead of the ones you are using. This is coming from a former arborists and current lineman.
I'm new to this and would like to be as safe as I can be going up a tree. What knot do you recommend to use on both carabiners? Thank you for your help.
I got this idea from another guy on here. He also recommends the ropeman. I can’t remember his name but he has a podcast as well. As you said, I can’t recommend a lineman’s belt and the ropeman enough. I use mine with climbing sticks and a hang on. Makes it so much easier.
Do you have your lineman’s rope attached to sit drag? I have a rch and sit drag but have used lineman’s on rch and don’t like it. Thinking about using it with sit drag. Yay or nay.
@@G2Outdoors ok, you just lost me. You use the lineman's rope on your saddle during the climb, then hook the saddle's bridge to your tether, right? Now are you saying to move the lineman's rope to your rock climbing harness as a redundant/backup safety attachment?
Given the saddle isn't rated for above ground or decent, any concern with attaching your lineman belt to the saddle as opposed to your rock climbing harness?
Squirrel Boy A lot of the guys in videos recommend leaving the rock climbing harness attached to the safety line but just with a bit of slack so that if the main rope breaks you still have the lineman belt as a backup but you still have mobility. I like that idea! Sort of a belt and suspenders type of thinking! :)
Is it truly safe to climb with a linemans belt? I mean a tether constricts the tree when you fall but a linemans belt is used and you slip if both feet go one direction off the trunk you are most likely to hit the ground. Arent you supposed to be with a twther at all.times? Im a bit confused
Tether would be the best option, but it's impractical most of the time. The Lineman belt is not 100% fail safe, but it's better than nothing. Good point!
Do you happen to know what size rope the hunter safety lifeline is made out of? I want to make this lineman’s belt out of the lifeline using the ascender which accepts 10-13mm rope.
So, not yet saddle hunting, but almost there; anyone used the Rock Exotica RopeGrab as a mechanical Prusik instead of the Ropeman 1, or Kong Duck? I’d rather buy Made in USA.
Can someone share a link to the amsteel line that I would need to make this lineman belt? I would just like to go with the added security of the amsteel line.
Cycle4Life12 Greg and others have said that the amsteel is NOT a good option for the lineman belt due to the lack of abrasion resistance. They recommend climbing rope for this.
I took a cam strap from my lone wolf sticks and added a carabiner to each side and it’s literally the same thing as an ascender for 1/10 of the price. Any cam strap will work just the same. Pull the tag end to tighten, press the cam button to loosen. One hand. Simple. Cheap. Safe and convenient. We trust them to strap down our atv’s and heavy objects on trailers. Save yourself some money people. It’s the same thing for a lot less money. I bet all you hunters have them in your garage right now. Cut the J hooks off with a cut off wheel, add carabiners and you’re done. You’re welcome
@@melaniejones6115 Nope. If that were the case he'd have known you can have the same one handed operation with a prusik for cheaper and with far less wear on your rope.
Shawn Chadwick what's wrong with mechanical prussic? I think it makes sense and describes how we use it very accurately. Ascender is a climbing term which is more than likely unfamiliar to most hunters.
G2 Outdoors No doubt. But if you type "mechanical prussic" into the Google machine you will get nearly zero hits for ropeman until...we are generating activity. lol. Something like a Zigzag et.al. is a mechanical prussic. Tree saddle on the other hand is a household name these days. It's like Kleenex. Hence the free pass. You need to make mechanical prussic a household name. lol

What saddle do you have on???
You have a nice career ahead of you, young man. Kudos. Stay humble.
Thank you very much! Appreciate the support!!!
Do you leave your ropeman1 on your linemans belt during storage? I worry about the spring wearing out.

Would this setup not be needed for a tree climber like the Summit Viper?
Great demo vid on the usefulness of the lineman belt!
how long of a blue water rope do you need? they come pretty long to buy
Where do you get the mechanical belt?
Where did you buy the rope from??
Nice video. I think I’ll be ordering a mechanical prusik. How long is the rope with your mechanical prusik?
8' total from Tethrdnation.com but you could probably get away with a shorter rope if you don't hunt big trees.
Thanks for all the great tips.
What knot do you recommend on the left side carabiner? Is it a double figure 8 loop?
The only knot I use is a stopper knot. the other side is a spliced eye.
Go on knot and rope and order a bull rope with sliced eye. Just allow extra footage for splice
Do you have your lineman’s rope attached to sit drag? I have a rch and sit drag but have used lineman’s on rch and don’t like it. Thinking about using it with sit drag. Yay or nay.
I use the LB on my sitdrag. RCH is only for hunting height.

I don't. But the HSS rope should work. I have some of that rope and I use it.
Question can i use the saftey harness that came with my summit for this.its has presik knot and i cannuse other carbiner
Very interested in making my own lineman belt but how long of a rope do I need?
Start with about 10'-12' that should be enough after all your knots.
I'm in the market for getting a platform made. I have an xop stand that I'm willing to take the seat off
+Davey Newman join Saddlehunter.com and look for the Ernie platform kit.
Is there any place I can by the lineman's rope with the Ascender all together?
Chad Klaren - Thanks Chad! I didn’t even realize online shopping was a thing until now.
When you use a prusic know you can put you line back through the top of the carabiner and then you can use one hand
how long should the linesmans rope be? 8 ft? 10 ft?
8 is plenty
@@G2Outdoors thanks. I ordered 10 because I was unsure.

Climbing rope. The term "belt" is a bit misleading.

The rope that connects to the tether once you disconnect the lineman belt. What kind of rope should that be?
