I fell from my stand / sticks last weekend. It was the scariest experience. I was using all XOP gear. XOP mini sticks with cable aiders. I was on my 3rd stick, hanging my 4th stick. The stick I was standing on, just popped off the tree. I heard a “boom”. It happened so fast. That stick was gone. I fell / slid into my other stick. It cut me up bad. I’m sliced up from my knee, to my crotch. My tummy, and chest. But, my linemen’s belt stopped me from going too far. I only slid down around 5-6 feet. Instead of 15-16 feet. I am very thankful to not have been seriously injured. I took a breather, and then went home. I was alone. 3.5 miles from anyone. Coulda been alot worse. Thank you XOO for making good products.
Glad you are not seriously hurt. I have been there. It's not fun. I have also had the strap loop pop half way off the versa buttonwhen I go to tighten it. That might be what happen to you. I always double check to make sure the strap is completely over the Vera button AFTER I synch it tight.

Thanks. Saddle and hang on stands are very safe ways to hunt. I would actually say probably the safest. But its important to use a linemans belt and use it correctly to be safe. Let me know if you have any questions as you start making the switch.

Excellent safety video and that settles it - if I ever use sticks to climb a tree, I'll carry a CAT 7 tourniquet, wear a jock with a cup and carry some booze! 😇 BTW, I noticed the tree wasn't vertical with the ground and you wisely climbed from the "underneath" side which apparently allows your lineman rope and tether to get a better bite without slipping.
A dynamic line anchored to the bottom and fed through the top anchor is the safest thing in my opinion. Falls on static lines are very painful no matter if it's a linemen's tether or some other. When climbing sticks, I use friction hitches to grab my lifeline. As I go up, I slide my hitch up. I caribiner from the waist(waiste loops) to my hitch. This allows me to take out all slike everytime I slide the hitch up. If i fall, the fall is very soft because the dunamic rope elongates about 26% of whatever length is supporting you. When i come down, i keep tension on the rop. As I step down, I slide the hitch down. This to me is the very safest way to climb stands.
Great video. What kind of knot do you have holding your rope to the carabiner (on your left hip, not your ascender)? i was using a clinch knot but you appear to have a knot that allows the carabiner to float/move freely. Thanks in advance.
If you attach your tether via a prusik with a rope tender (aero hunter makes a nice setup for this), then you can take the slack up quickly as you step. Then reposition and start over using tether and linemans. It's a pain because between the linemans, tether, ladder, and sticks....there's just a bit too much going on.

I actually recorded a video last week that will publish soon about how to safely hang ladder stands by yourself. Those ladder stands are pretty dangerous to set if you dont do it safely.
I spent the money on a full saddle set up a few weeks ago, hunted with it quite a bit last week... felt like it was unsafe, a gimmick, and nothing compared to a climber, and this video proves it. Climbing with a climber isn't safe either but it is no where near as complicated or introduces the same level of risk as a tree saddle.
I use a ropeman instead works so much better. You should check out my video on making your own lineman belts. It will show you everything you need to know
@@SamkoTradBow No the rope you attach to your back makes a loop around the tree then you atach it to your back. Put a knott on the end and place a prusic and attach to that. Then when its looped around the tree you can slide the prosaic up to keep it snug.
@@Captaraknospider thats what I have already. Exactly. Loop in the end of the tether and a carabiner on a Prussik on that line that connects to the loop. I do it this way as I dont want to feed the tether through itself as those always slide down the tree.
Last year was my first year hang and hunting and about the 6th time climbing my stick slipped on a vine on the tree and I fell and scratched my stomach pretty bad. But im ALIVE thanks to my lineman belt!

Good video. I had to learn the hard way that you were supposed to use something called a linesman’s belt to install steps and hang a stand some 30 years ago or so. Thank the good Lord my broken foot healed correctly and He protected me from so much worse that could’ve happened. Murphy’s law in hanging a stand without a linesman belt is that if you fall it will likely be when installing the very last step, with a stand on your back. Lord have mercy, and He did. Main issue with hang-on stands is getting from the top of the stick(s) into the stand, and for that reason I use a safety line on all my pre-hung sets. A big shout out to the Summit line of climbing sticks with the enclosed steps if you can leave a set in the woods because there are no protruding steps to gouge in a fall. I’ve got a couple of the “Vines”. Thanks again for the tip on the Rockman ascender. I started using it last year after seeing your recommendation.
I like how fast the buckles are. the weight of the buckle lets me swing them around big trees easy and when im packing up its so fast to wrap and lock those straps. the rope mods are great and lighter. But for me the speed is everything and i will carry the extra half pound of buckles to have that speed. know quite a few people that are using rope mods and love them! Im just stubborn and like my system..lol

Am looking to get into saddle next year, was lucky enough to be able to order some beast sticks, they are set for delivery towards the end of the year, I figure I get all the gear by the spring, practice all summer and get into the woods in the fall. Here is my question, how do you overcome that fear of falling/heights? I see that as the biggest obstacle for me.
Yoy will love those beast sticks! The best way to beat that fear is to be as safe as possible. A lineman belt is great. A tether you move up and down the tree with you is best. Take your time and be safe. Remember you don't have to go that high. Pick trees with good cover and you only need to be 10-12 feet. Every deer i killed so far this year was less than 12 feet high.

How high do you need to be in order to avoid detection by the deer? was planning on exploring/finding some good trees to get into this next season. Is that advisable? The whole idea of saddle hunting is attractive because I use an ebike to get to many areas. Want to be mobile and lightweight. appreciate the help
@@arthurcarstens 4 sticks will for sure get you that high or higher. You could also run 3 sticks with a loop aider on the bottom stick to get 16-17 feet with 3 sticks (i have a video on aiders i made a couple months ago). You only need to go high enough to get cover. Sometimes that's 8 feet, sometimes that 16 feet. No need to be above 16-17 feet ever in my opinion and the higher you go the steeper the shot angles and the bigger the risk of a one lung hit. It sure is a good idea to go out in the spring and scout spots for the next year and get some trees picked out and shooting lanes cleared. Remember that you will need a lineman belt or a tether to keep you safe when you are climbing the tree up and down. I have videos on those and there are many more on youtube. But always stsy safe and always stsy connected to the tree. Any other questions just ask!

Had a friend fall and it messed him up pretty good and hes a lineman by trade so even a professional can mess up. I can't chance it myself, I'm on a blood thinner so if it get cut bad I'm bleeding a lot. So i use a extension ladder against a tree and strap it to the tree. Then i have a harness i hook to hooks i attached to the ladder. Yes, its not the most quite method, but iv never had a issue spooking deer and it works freaking great.
Great video! You mentioned about a torn meniscus. I go for an MRI tomorrow as I feel I may have torn mine. Did you get the surgery or just let it heal on it's own? Trying to determine how much of an impact this will have on my hunting season. Thanks!
That sucks! I went in for an xray and talked to the doc. They said I already waited too long and it was in the process of healing and I would probably be fine. I went to physical therapy 1 time but never went back as the bill for that hour was 450 bucks. I'm thinking I will eventually fully recover and not need surgery. But it's taking a long time to heal. I hurt it in april and still do not know if I could use that leg by its self to go up a tree stick step without the aid of my hands pulling. But it's getting better every week. My doc says my biggest problem now is getting my muscles to start working normal again after not using them as I baby that knee. All I know is it's been a long process and a pain in the ass. Getting older I dont heal as fast. Have had 2 knee surgeries before in my motocross, skiing and snowmobiling days and healed quick. Not at 46 I dont heal as fast.
I can not sell them do to the cost of liability insurance. But the video has links in the description to the couple things you need and it only takes 15 mins to make it.
That tree squeeze system is just way to big, heavy and bulky for hunting as well as trying to get around branches we cant or dont want to cut. But the concept is great if it could be scaled down and simpler.
The Ropeman1 is not made to save you from a fall it will cut your line, fail etc. its not designed to do that. i want to use one but dont know how to yet without worrying about it failing
There probably is. Every step up will cause slack until you remove the slack. But never anything wrong with using 2 tethers and the extra safety factor! Well done!
@@SamkoTradBow no there is not. Seriously. There is no slack in my system ever. I literally have to pull each tether down alternately to get down. The most I could slip is a inch or two , and only when I put weight on a tether that is on a bump on the tree.
@@SamkoTradBow my tethers are my steps. I'm connected from my harness through each to the tree at all times. Also, each tether is connected to a foot with a stirrup. The climbing motion is similar to tree spikes, but is public legal. Total weight is 2 pounds. There's no exposed metal to make noise (other than the carabiner version).
Would be nice if someone made a side step on at the end of the stick, why you ask? Let's say do fall the stand would be on the opposite side of the tree and you won't hit a cheese shredder down at the bottom.
I need to be safer climbing, guilty of standing on the stick, unhooking getting around the branch, and clipping back in. W/ young kids I want to eventually teach I need to be consistent with always being tied in. I one-stick climb with a saddle so between the lineman belt and tether through a madrock I can always be in tight.

I made one of Jason's lineman belts for myself. It is great. As a matter of fact I use his whole system except I use Wild Edge Stepps instead of sticks, otherwise everything else is the same. And I now feel SAFE!!
Yep it's what I have been calling it for 20 years and it's what line's men have been calling it for over 100 years. It was not invented by hunters. Loggers have been using them forever, as have telephone pole and powerline workers. we just took their amazing idea. Bit I'm also stubborn like that...to me a hashtag is still just a pound sign! #notchanging
Yeah I understand you but I have worked at heights for years in line work, tree work, tower climbing. I’ve worked out of a saddle for most of my adult days in various industries the “lineman’s belt” is a position lanyard. I’m not heckling just curious.
Derek Trent maybe it depends on where you’re located. Different areas of the country have different slang...it’s always been a linemen belt in my neck of the woods
Dennis Bettencourt yeah that’s probably it because I’ve heard all sorts of terms like buck strap, flip line, etc which all fit. But the lineman belt is odd because the lineman’s belt was literally a Leather belt (a “saddle”)lineman wore in the past; it had no leg straps or butt strap and was hell on your back.

The hawk sticks are kind of crappy but I like their dog bone steps for this reason. A little more forgiving if you do slip. Great video!
Yep the hawks have great steps. So do the xop sticks and I believe the lone wolf custom gear steps are bigger as well.

Climbers are good if you have the trees that work for them.

Use a prusic knott on your rope that goes around the tree. this allows you to make it shorter or longer depending on how tree tapers.

It will not heal itself, eventually it will require arthoscopy.

it would be worth investing in a Buckingham tree sqeeze and a climbing system would take your safety to a different level over all good info

There's no smashing into the tree with 2 tether. There's no slack in my climb. None, nada, zero.
There probably is. Every step up will cause slack until you remove the slack. But never anything wrong with using 2 tethers and the extra safety factor! Well done!
@@SamkoTradBow no there is not. Seriously. There is no slack in my system ever. I literally have to pull each tether down alternately to get down.
The most I could slip is a inch or two , and only when I put weight on a tether that is on a bump on the tree.
@@SamkoTradBow my tethers are my steps. I'm connected from my harness through each to the tree at all times. Also, each tether is connected to a foot with a stirrup. The climbing motion is similar to tree spikes, but is public legal. Total weight is 2 pounds. There's no exposed metal to make noise (other than the carabiner version).
Would be nice if someone made a side step on at the end of the stick, why you ask? Let's say do fall the stand would be on the opposite side of the tree and you won't hit a cheese shredder down at the bottom.
Uep the sticks will ripped you up if you land on them
I need to be safer climbing, guilty of standing on the stick, unhooking getting around the branch, and clipping back in. W/ young kids I want to eventually teach I need to be consistent with always being tied in. I one-stick climb with a saddle so between the lineman belt and tether through a madrock I can always be in tight.
Yep anything can happen. Glad you are taking the safety seriously. Kids and family need you. It's worth the extra couple seconds

That's a great system. But heavy and bulky. I did check it out before as lots of arborist use it. It is a great idea!

I made one of Jason's lineman belts for myself. It is great. As a matter of fact I use his whole system except I use Wild Edge Stepps instead of sticks, otherwise everything else is the same. And I now feel SAFE!!

Yep it's what I have been calling it for 20 years and it's what line's men have been calling it for over 100 years. It was not invented by hunters. Loggers have been using them forever, as have telephone pole and powerline workers. we just took their amazing idea. Bit I'm also stubborn like that...to me a hashtag is still just a pound sign! #notchanging
Yeah I understand you but I have worked at heights for years in line work, tree work, tower climbing. I’ve worked out of a saddle for most of my adult days in various industries the “lineman’s belt” is a position lanyard. I’m not heckling just curious.
Derek Trent maybe it depends on where you’re located. Different areas of the country have different slang...it’s always been a linemen belt in my neck of the woods
Dennis Bettencourt yeah that’s probably it because I’ve heard all sorts of terms like buck strap, flip line, etc which all fit. But the lineman belt is odd because the lineman’s belt was literally a Leather belt (a “saddle”)lineman wore in the past; it had no leg straps or butt strap and was hell on your back.
