  • Flat feet ≠ Overpronation in running
People assume that having flat feet is correlated with having overpronation when you run.
But it is not that simple.
Research has shown that evaluating the foot in a static position does not necessarily correlate with dynamic foot function in walking/standing (Dicharry et al. 2009)
You can have a flat foot in standing, but it functions appropriately in running.
However, you can also have a foot that seems fine in a standing position, but present with some wonky movement patterns when you run.
This is why picking a shoe solely on how the foot is in standing may be a poor indicator to find the right shoe for you.
Instead, I encourage runners to trial shoes in an actual run and see how that feels.

Shop owner: Good afternoon! What can I do for you today?
Me: Yes, I'd like to buy some running, please.

I swear I had the flattest feet on the planet! Would love to know what would be an appropriate shoe. Shoes with a lot of arch support caused me a lot of pain and pronation
