Kevin, do you reuse your potting soil? And what was your conclusion about the depth of the roots? Did it put more energy in root production or do you feel you got better shoot growth?
I like it very much, I just came back from the store and bought a small container of arugula for about $4.00 which is quite a bit for such a small amount. But the fact of growing your own food is so gratifying, I'm placing an order and will follow your video. Thank you!
Thanks! I used to grow sprouts back in the 70s. I love arugula, I’ve got some started in a tray for baby greens and got some clumped together, so I thinned them and ate the tiny little sprouts. Wow! They are amazing. I really wanted to grow sprouts but I guess micro greens seems to be the way to go. You don’t have any drainage? Do you water besides the spraying? Or is the soil wet when you start? Did the depth of the container make a difference? I’m inspired. Thanks so much. I’ll check out the supplier you mentioned. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos!
Thank you epic Gardening! So glad I found your channel even though this video is 5 years old it’s the best video for how to grow micro greens. I’ve been struggling for a while to grow them I manage to get them up but then they would be thin a floppy and end up collapsing. I have followed your tutorial and I 6 days later I have greens! Yay! Using a little herb shaker was a game changer for me and also covering the silver foil and putting them in a dark place was too, I was leaving them to the side in my kitchen ( near a window). I have now got the confidence to do another batch.
Hi Kevin, what can I do with the soil afterward? Is it spent? I don't compost. Thanks for all the videos. I just got a mini greenhouse and am learning about gardening.
Thank You ! This is a Great video! - The critique: Your presentation was spot on, you explained everything very well. your visual sequenceing was good and you shared your seed information right off. I'm sorry it took me 2 yrs to find it.
I have arugula seeds and I am a beginner gardener, I just planted them today to start to grow full grown arugula for additions in salads. Basically my question is eating microgreens is eating the sprouts before they become "adults"? Sorry if thats a dumb question, I am new to this but I love growing my own food!
I'm seeing varying information about covering the seeds with a clear lid or in your case a non transparent lid, i'm on my first grow and so far 1.5 days in..all my other seeds are sprouting except for this one, in which im using a clear plastic lid, although the seeds do look to be in a gel stage..so i think the very start of the rooting process is about to begin..i'll post an update in a few days on my clear top method's results.
Great video thanks! I followed this and it turned out. Is it possible to transfer to garden and have them grow more? Also once you cut them, can these keep growing as long as you don't remove the stem?
Thanks for the video, I think microgreens might be my next project. Your videos, both the old ones and the new ones, have been fantastic - before this year, I'd never grown a single thing. Now I've got tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, kale, radishes, mint and even a massive pumpkin plant growing! Thanks for everything!
You know how to teach effectively. Show and tell. I am ordering the seeds. Looking for your soil video to learn where to purchase the correct soil. Thank you.
Hey. This was a great lesson. Do we have to throw this soil after each harvest? Is there any way we can use it for something? Feels like we are wasting soil.
Kevin in his microgreens masterclass video said that the soil in the shallower trays is typically spent and unrecoverable. For this deeper one, especially when taking an earlier cut, I suspect there may be some fertile soil left near the bottom of the container. Also, the soil is not wasted if you compost the roots. =)
@@kristoferplunkett2430 thank you. I do have 2 compost buckets in my small flat. Shall I put the roots and the soil in it? The buckets have cocopeat, manure and some peels etc that I have been adding. It does not have soil though.
love your contents. easy to the ear (as I play it in the background when I am working) and easy to the eye (when I need to take a break from working). And easy to follow instruction. Learned from your videos. sadly some plants did not grow. hahaha
fantastic videos! exactly what I've been looking for! have you tried growing without soil? Do you have an post harvest storing tips? would love to see videos on that as well. Thanks from Chicago!
I have Kim! I prefer soil because I grow my micros a bit longer than most, and they start to actually pull nutrition from the soil. I'd rather not supplement with hydroponic nutrients when soil does just fine! Thanks for watching :)
I'm trying to grow microgreens now and I decided to try Arugula first. I'm growing them in soil and I have seen what Arugula is suppose to look like in 4-5 days and my Arugula looks like it's been growing for 4-5 days instead of just 2 days, I don't know if this is good or bad.
Good video Kevin. I like your direction on the simplicity of doing this. Are you growing in a window sill? Do you have cats? If so do they bother your crop?
No cats or pets of any kind for me! I grow on my balcony, but would actually get better growth if I did it under my LED or CFL setup just due to the direction my balcony is facing. How's your grow going Karl?
Yeah, about that.... I didn't start yet. Where I grow for the wheat grass I don't think will work well for micro green as it is a closed cabinet with fluorescent light and constant fan. With the fan the temp is still near 81 degrees or so. I want to grow the micros on my desk, but we have two cats who love greens (esp wheat grass!). Still thinking on this one.
Great Video. I bought the arugula seeds to grow in a jar but realized later this was not possible, or is it? After harvesting do you store them in the refridgerator?
Of course I gave the video I like! You did something which most people don't do: You gave us some expected yields per tray, and that's something I appreciae. By the way, that's a very noisy city you live in! NY?
Nope - microgreens do not need nutrients before you harvest as they get everything they need from the seed. If you grow them past the first true leaf though, you will need to either use nutrients or grow in fertile soil!
Thank you for the very informative video! Out of curiosity have you compared soil based growth with hydroponic growth from an ease of setup and food flavor/nutrition perspective? Gratitude!!
How do you water your microgreens in the smaller container? I would think water would overflow the side of the container taking soil and seeds initially. Do you ever water from the bottom?
I don't water from the bottom on these or the production 10x20" trays. Just use a nice watering head that breaks the water up nicely so it doesn't disturb the soil too much!
Can i grow this the way that one blossom video you said was one of blossom's good video (container, damp paper towel, put seeds on top of damp paper towel, put container lid on it, leave for like 6 days)?
Thanks for the compliment Lisa! You shouldn't have problems with gnats with most seeds unless the environment is abnormally moist or warm. Hope that helps!
I live in Charleston SC and its below sea level and VERY humid and Hot. I live in an apartment and ive been on the fence about trying micro green bc i worry about the chance of mold in this climate . Is there anything i could do to prevent this ?
Try covering the soil with cinnamon. It will prevent mould from growing on the soil. Good ventilation is also key. If you're getting mould, try reducing the amount is seed so air can get through.
great video, thanks for showing how to do this small scale. I do have some questions, what do you do with the soil after the harvest, and is it possible to grow the microgreens on kitchenpaper or cottonballs? or is that too much lack of nutrients to grow successfully. I would like to try this but hauling up bags of soil to my apartment and bags of spent soil to my the thrash seems like a bit daunting to me. ;-)
I would normally compost the soil after use, but right now I'm just disposing of it until I move to a larger space. You can grow on cottonballs but you'll want to harvest early (6-7 days) because the plant will run out of seed nutrition somewhere around that date!
Nice video! Arrugula is so good for you. Which other seeds do you sprout? Lately I've been sprouting broccoli sprouts, which are highest in sulforaphanes, and fenugreek. Trying mustard now. Wonder what else will sprout.
Hi, Great videos. hope you continue with other varieties!! also, usually how much time do you left the arugula covered and how much time it takes from planting to harvest for maximum yield in you experience? thanks!
Is there a minimum depth of soil for Arugula intended for 8-10 days growth? How much does the depth affect the height they grow to in that short period?

Thank you for showing an easy way to do small amounts for personal consumption. Will be nice to do in the winter.

Hey there, thank you for the kind words. For soil, try a screened potting mix. I have a couple videos on soil screens.

Nice salad, for when you want salad, but can't leave the house.
Will you get more greens growing after harvesting the first cut?

did you compost the roots after shaving off the greens for consumption ?

I water them after they're uncovered, no more misting! And I put them in the sun, or at least filtered sun.

After the first harvest will it continue to just keep growing more microgreens with the same flavor?
You can try a cut and come again method, but it will probably bit more bitter and you won't have as much volume

Any tips on wilting? My very first small tray had parts that were wilting.
You may have planted too densely, that can often cause dead pockets. Otherwise it could be over or under watering!
Will the same Receptacle continue to grow the Arugula after the first harvest ?
You can cut and come again, but I wouldn't' recommend. Arugula seed is quite cheap and you get a much better harvest if you cut only once.
what do you do with the part that is still inside the container. Do they grow again or you dump it. They just harvest one time?
