    I've never seen such beautiful microgreens! I didn't know you could just continue to let them grow and not harvest them all at once. I've been feeling guilty about eating the lettuce I've been growing for the first time (while it's small [about 4-5 inches tall] LOL). It was supposed to be the start of a garden, but it is delicious.

    Carter, I have never grown microgreens before. I would love to try to grow some, I have overhauled my lifestyle this year. I do wonderful with my gardens and canning of it. But, if I can add to my new journey with the added health benefits with them, I am all in.
    I just placed my order to begin.
    I was wondering if you could give me ideas on how to store with some recipes on how you use them besides juicing, smoothies, and sandwiches. I am a diabetic and need ideas. I have given up salts and breads for health reasons.
    I appreciate you, and I love your channel.

      Congrats on making some healthy lifestyle changes, Penny! If I harvest more than I'm planning to use right away, I store them in a green produce bag with a paper towel and just loosely fold the bag over. A ziploc would also work if you leave open enough so humidity doesn't build up in the bag. I add microgreens (and baby greens) to all my salads. In fact, sometimes my salads are just microgreens with a bit olive oil and balsamic. I very often do them in roll-ups that just use slices of turkey, ham or roast beef as the wrapper. Basil microgreens always find their way into spaghetti. Microgreens are excellent for filling spring rolls. They're a great way to add nutrition and flavor to stir fry. They are are fabulous in "bowls". We often do paleo bowls with a base of cauliflower rice that's topped with shredded meat of some kind, and lots of fresh raw veggies...carrots, microgreens, radishes, cucumbers...all drizzled with a chimichurri sauce made from parsley microgreens. Hope these ideas will get you started!

      It is so easy! Yes, I've been freeze drying lots. Working on herbs, of course. But I've also started a "greens" jar for the broccoli, kale, chard, etc when I hit overload! Nice harvest you had today! The weather was so perfect today, I took the opportunity to do some oh-so-fun weeding. The weather report shows us in the 30s Tuesday night, so I'm still lugging what feels like 10,000 plants in and out everyday. Ugh. I'll be so glad to get them in the ground later this week! Thank you for your video! I am fairly new to growing microgreens. I decided to start with lentils hydroponically. They germinated great and developed a good root system. However, once I opened them to natural light and started bottom watering, they stopped progressing and turned color to brown, almost burnt at their ends. I wasted 3 trays and am not sure what is the problem? Almost the same happened to me with pea microgreens, they don't progress as they should after I start exposing them to the natural light. I don't know if the problem is in the environment or anything else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    • @growandpreserve
      @growandpreserve  7 днів тому

      Hmmm. Are you seeing roots come out the bottom of the pan before you start bottom watering? Are you maybe overwatering--the pans should be dry by the next day? Are they perhaps too close to the light?

    • @LesiaAungst
      @LesiaAungst 3 дні тому

      @@growandpreserve Yes, I see well-developed roots before I start bottom watering. My containers are not dry for several days. Is this normal? I don't add any water but I am afraid that water will become not fresh and bacteria will start growing. Shall I at least change the water? Thank you!

    Make sure you don't use treated seeds for microgreens! Many commercially available seeds are treated. Seeds used for microgreens specifically are untreated.

    How often would you say you plant (replant) your microgreens? Do you grown them in succession? That's something I've never grown before, and learning the nutritional value, I'm really thinking of doing so now. Thanks, Carter! :)

      Hey, Lois! Good to see you. I had a crazy schedule going with them back in Atlanta...about every 3-4 days I would plant one tray, so I always had something ready while the others were in various stages. These days, I have no patience for that! If you just want the microgreens stage (no baby greens), I would plant a new couple of trays every week or so. I like having the leafy greens as well, so I tend to do 4 10x10 trays every 3-4 weeks or so. During the pantry challenge this year, I planted 8 trays on Jan 7, and still had plenty of leafy greens left at the end of Feb. Hope that helps!

      @@growandpreserve Thank you, Carter. I'm trying to "clean up" my eating habits, eating much more nutritiously (without breaking the bank). This info does help.
      I've been keeping up with and watching all your videos, but have watched most from the tv, so not able to comment on those at that time. Just got my patio garden planted, praying for some great harvests throughout the Summer. One of your videos "talked me into" getting a Presto electric canner, so I've been super busy doing some small batch canning, which is much easier on my schedule. I love it!
      One question for you about it, though... have you ever had any issues at all with it? I think I've made the mistake of reading negative comments in social media groups about it, which is quite unsettling.
      Anyway, I'm still here (thankfully... especially since I was so sick with Bronchitis and Pneumonia for about 2 months, right after Christmas). As always, enjoying your videos and all the information you pass along to us. :)

      I'm so glad you got the Presto Electric canner. I haven't had a single problem with it. I have seen people referencing a negative review about it, but I have also seen the reports on the extensive testing that has been done and continues to be done on it. I have no concerns. It's my first choice for my own pressure canning these days.

    Hello and and thank you for this video which I have watched more than once. I really need to better understand the harvesting process once the microgreens get to the stage of baby greens. On some they get very tall and do not seem to branch out so perhaps there is not enough light. On others they look tangled and bushy. In that case do I try to reach in and harvest tiny leaves or if the plants are 4 inches tall - like a hedge almost - how do I handle that? I do want to reharvest those areas I have cut but I am not sure - I have actually see some people sort of mow down and area and then others do a painstaking tiny leaf at a time process. I am at minute 20:45 or thereabouts and my plants look similar. I will really look forward to your guidance. - Deb

    • @growandpreserve
      @growandpreserve  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey, Deb. Let me give you a different way to think about it. If you are growing an individual lettuce/spinach/kale plant, you can harvest either by selecting the outer leaves or by cutting just above the crown. That same plant will continue to grow (ie. grow back). On the other hand, if you're growing in a very crowded baby green situation, the "re-growth" is generally the result of a new seed finally having access to the light and more resources. With that in mind, in a baby green or microgreen situation, I "mow down" so that the unsprouted seeds now have plenty of light and plenty of water/soil to start their growth. Does that make sense?

    Donny Greens does not recommend the dome method as it only encourages mold and is unnecessary. He also says not to water during germination. What do you think?

    • @growandpreserve
      @growandpreserve  26 днів тому

      I like the domes because I get taller microgreens faster. Mold has not been an issue for me. Every now and then I'll get a spot in sunflowers, but it's easily dealt with with one squirt of a hydrogen peroxide/water mix. I also top spritz with water during germination if the seeds/top layer of soil have dried out. Seeds won't germinate if they're not moist. Particularly with something like cilantro, parsley or beets. Those can take weeks to germinate. Even domed or blacked out, they're going to need moisture. What has your experience been?
