Thanks for a great reaction. I see that others have already commented on the "satanic message" BS, so I'll skip that. ;) As for song recommendations, oh my. Too many. If you're interested in doing a bit of a dive into the greatest rock band we've ever known, just start at the beginning with album 1 track 1 and keep on going. It's really the best way to understand not only their creativity, but their versatility as well. A lot of the hidden gems often don't get recommended, which is a real shame. If you do a dive into Zeppelin in this way, not likely you'd be disappointed and you'll discover your own personal favorites that might not make someone else's "recommended list". In concert, Robert Plant called this a "song of hope." The lyrics speak of redemption...."yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run....there's still time to change the road you're on." The claims of satanism in the backwards masking are nonsense. This is one of the greatest rock songs ever written, and one of the greatest songs written, period.

@@Clandestined13 I have listened to it backwards in my "History of Rock Music" class at Arizona State. The professor actually had a turntable that could do such a thing. It's probably just coincidence that the lyrics sounded the way they did in reverse.
P.S. The lyrics were written & sung in the studio, not Crowley's/Page's house, so there goes that argument.
Regarding the satanism nonsense you should be aware that people who did not like rock music or rock bands used to make this type of claim. There were similar allegations against various bands including the Beatles. Just have a think about how difficult it would be to record those complex lyrics and then have them say something else in reverse. The words of the song are ambiguous and open to interpretation but that just broadens the appeal and makes them more interesting. the references to Bustle in the hedgerow and the May Queen relate to a common and very beautiful British environmental feature and folklore ( they are a British band). Plant has stated that the meaning is the reawakening of life in Spring. To me the music echoes this as it subtly gains momentum and stength - its like life force.
The other often misreported issue is the plagiarism accusation relating to this song, which gets bandied about on the internet. The accusation was in relation to the opening bars and was dismissed at court. This was brought back to court in 2020 - there is a lot of money at stake- the case was dismissed again, the original verdict being upheld. Its a shame that you read all that nonsense before hearing the song as it was clearly distracting. it would be well worth watching the live version at MSG in 1973 as the performance is compelling and watching Jimmy Page play the solo is one of the great pleasures in life . Relating to the comment on sympathy for the devil by the Rolling Stones below, this is NOT sympathetic to the Devil, it is an expose of how seductive and dangerous the devil is. That is also an excellent track and worth reacting to. Do try some other tracks as listed below they are a brilliant band.

First, Jimmy Page discussed the composition of this song in detail, and you can view that on UA-cam. It was experimental because he wanted it to start slow and gradually gain speed, to see if that concept would even work. Plant wrote the lyrics quickly while noodling around. He has always been interested in Celtic lore and deep, ancient spiritual traditions; many of their song lyrics reflect such strong imagery and mysticism. I think they are sometimes ambiguous on purpose, so the listener will find their own way to interpret it. Stairway to Heaven is a legendary, iconic song; the rumor about hidden Satanic messages is plain crap.

One of the best songs ever written from one of the best bands. But they were heavily influenced by Paganism, Satanism, Lucifer or whatever you want to call it. Each of the four sigils of Led Zeppelin belong to each member. Those sigils are black magick spells. Jimmy Page even bought Boleskine House in Scotland specifically because it used to be owned by Aleister Crowley. Crowley was the self-described “wickedest man in the world”. A man who tried to commune with demons using sex magick. He was an occultist, developed the religion of Thelema. There’s much,much more to this. None of this is theory.

Your comment presents two possibilities:
1 - You’ve already researched Jimmy Page’s life, read/watched/heard a substantial amount (ie. what’s freely available online) of historical records of his life and are in denial because what you’ve learned is so anathema to your historical/cultural/world view that it almost angers you. Cognitive dissonance!
2 - Your belief is based on nothing more than the fact that he is/was one of the most influential recording artist in the last 100 years.. That, if he worships Satan, and practices black magick then there’s no way that band would’ve been welcomed/accepted/promoted by global MSM, especially if all members of the band pursued the same occult undertakings. And that, outside of Zeppelin, he seems like a regular guy who probably holds common and unremarkable beliefs like the rest of us. Wishful thinking!

I’ve literally watched hundreds of younglings reacting to Classic Rock. Like most of the audience here, I lived it in my jr. High/high school years.
I’ve noticed this commonality these youngsters have, they heavily focus on the lyrics and their meaning.
We simply vibed out on the music itself, as a whole. Being completely honest, dozens of Zeppelin songs I worship, NEVER knew WTF Robert Plant was saying, until the internet, let alone what the lyrics meant.
It made me rock out. I listened to the drums and the guitar and Plants voice or whatever group was playing.
I’m only guessing, but music today is such garbage, the lyrics are what the kids focus on. These kids can’t name the band members of their favorite recording artists. We dug the Band members of these groups and knew all their names.
So kids, just listen to the music as a whole a few times before you dwell on the lyrics, let alone what they meant. The greatest songwriters left our imaginations interpret their lyrics ourselves, never revealing the inspiration or meaning.
Yeah, because people quit listening to the lyrics a long time ago and now its coming back full circle. I can appreciate it now from the younger people, because it meant everything to our generation.

You nailed it. It’s still about the music/vibe for me. Back then I often couldn’t understand what they said and when I did, the words made no sense to me. But I was so into the great music that I didn’t care
Part of it was that it was harder to get the lyrics back then. If you were listening on the radio or whatever, there was no app or website or UA-cam with annotations telling you the lyrics. You’d have to go out of your way to find something on the back of an album or something. So I almost never had any idea what the lyrics actually said in many songs unless it was perfectly clear.

It makes me laugh because you have groups like the Stones writing a song like Sympathy for the Devil and no one cares. I think sometimes greatness threatens those on their moral high horses.

Always start with the studio recordings with Zeppelin. The prowess of Jimmy Page’s production talents separated them from the average bands of the day. One caveat is the “Celebration Day Concert,” which put to rest the question, could they still do it live? Jason filled his dad John’s shoes quite nicely. Pops would have been proud. 👈🤘😎

Robert Plant was in tears when Heart sang this at the Kennedy Center Honors...can u imagine what he was thinking when he wrote this...never appreciated it as a teen but now I see how deep it is.

Led Zeppelin still the best band of the 1970s and they invented the GOAT status. I was nine years old the first time I heard Led Zeppelin and they blew my mind. I am almost 61 years old now and Led Zeppelin still blows my mind. If you decide to go down this rabbit hole with them, you will not be disappointed.✌🏻

It starts out with gentle flamenco-style guitar and Robert Plant singing mournfully, but then crescendos into Plant’s plaintive wails, then decrescendos back to gentle, and then crescendos back up again. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotion and you’ll want to hear it again and again.
The fact that you have enough respect not to pause during the song, earned you a subscriber in me. Led Zeppelin 🐐🐐🐐🐐, the very best to ever do it. Enjoy your Led Zep journey, I'm jealous. Plant wrote 90% of the lyrics while just listening to Bonzo and Jimmy jamming it out in one sitting, and as Jimmy has said its hard enough to record the right way around

Song writers used to let a song breathe and meander, time signatures changed, musicians took turns showing each other up. Together they’d write masterpieces. Music today is creatively stifled or often sampled… and badly so. Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Boston, etc, wrote songs that breathed life into the world and left its mark… forever.
What I think is you just listened to one of the greatest songs ever recorded, but you didn't quite seem to get it. It's not always about the lyrics. It's about the way the song makes you feel, the melodic acoustic guitar parts, the drum build up, the lead guitar crescendo. It is a masterpiece. Whether I'm listening to a song I've never heard before by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Khalid, Lil Nas X, or anybody else, the lyrics are usually secondary to everything else. Led Zeppelin are the 5th biggest selling musical artists of all time. The Beatles are the biggest at #1. I look forward to you checking out some more Led Zeppelin, and hopefully at some point, The Beatles. If you do check out the Beatles, I would start with the live rooftop performance of the song "Don't Let Me Down".

Hard to pick a favourite Led Zep song but " since I've been loving you" had the most effect on me as a blues song.

Levee Breaks is a good one. The Drumming is excellent Harmonica gives colour. It has a good vibe.
Stairway to heaven is one of the rock greatest songs with one of the best guitar players Jimmy Page and his Iconic EDS-1275 "Doubleneck" Cherry Red Gibson. Stunning!

He is also supposed to have said to Jimmy,laughingly …”well, that’ll get them thinking”…. Lyrics are often kept vague, so that people can make the meaning their own. The song itself, according to Robert, is about Fate. Make of it what you will…..

Great. I had the good fortune to grow up in Birmingham during the 60's through the 80's.
Bizarrely there were so many bands within a roughly 20 mile radius that it just seemed normal...The Move. ELO, Wizzard , Black Sabbath, UB40, Slade, Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, Dexies Midnight Runners, The Specials and many more.
We could pop to a local pub and see world famous groups playing for fun.

This song has been my favorite song since 1976, sixth grade. And I'm 57 now.
My interpretation of this song is a stairway.
It starts at the first step. Very quiet. Goes to another step. A little more. They were not in a hurry.
Then the next step, John Bonham with the drums.
And then the guitar solo from Jimi and Robert going at it. Top step.
The last line means to me that she reached heaven...
I briefly had a step dad when I was little who liked what I called old hippie music, but as far as I know he never played led zepplin. I can’t be sure, he was only in my life full time from 4-6 & part time from 6-8 before he moved to another state. So as far as I know the first time someone played me Led Zeppelin was when I was 13. My older sister was part of a crowd that liked classic rock, think rednck hippies, and her and her bf decided I needed to hear stairway to heaven. It’s a great song but I think I was at the perfect age to have it blow my mind. Like I was transfixed. I’m not even a fan of guitar solos, usually I find them distracting from a song g, but everything about this song fcked me up. A year later I met this kid whose parents were legit old hippies, & she introduced me to more zepplin and Pink Floyd. Like I still remember her name and her telling me her ideal man was a young Robert plant. Idk I got shipped off to an institution for troubled kids and runaways and never saw her again. But her and my sister had a huge impact on what music I listened to. Iwsnt from listening to whatever was popular to being hardcore into classic rock. Tho I did start to discover other types of music & find my own musical tastes. I don’t really listen to classic rock anymore bc I get sick of music fast and it’s not like they’re making more. So I save my favs and only occasionally pull them out to savor. I will say I notice the instruments more now. Like I don’t think I really payed attn to the drums when I was a kid but they’re fcking great. I love those heavy rolls at the peak of the song. Anyways this managed to drag out some nostalgia for me.
First time watching one of your reactions. I will be back for a lot more. I had just turned 9 years old when Led Zeppelin IV was released. I have always viewed the song as a cautionary tale about drug use/abuse. The woman is looking for her next fix. If she can't find her regular dealer than 'If the stores are all closed with a word she can get what she came for.' I visualize the woman possibly seeking other even more nefarious sources for her drugs and her next high can go one of two ways: she will get higher than never before or she will overdose and die and take a ... stairway to heaven. The woman has a choice though either to get help/quit the drug scene or continue on a path to possible self-destruction: 'Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on.' She likely chose to get super high and her fate is reinforced, to me, by the words 'Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know, the piper's calling you to join him.' She has OD'd and the piper (Death? God?) is beckoning her on a whispering wind to take that stairway to heaven. That's always been my interpretation of the song. No matter what your thoughts are, it is an anthem and a melodic, haunting masterpiece that still gives me chills. Jimmy Page used three guitars throughout the tune including a rich-sounding 12-string. His acoustic playing in the first half is simple sounding but hypnotizing; his blazing electric guitar solo near the end is mesmerizing. At various times over the last 51 years Stairway To Heaven has been rated the greatest rock song ever by many music critics and listeners. Such is the fervor and loyalty of Zep fans, and the high quality of most of their catalogue, that there are likely many Zep fanatics who probably think Stairway is not even in the top 5 of their discography. That alone demonstrates their musical greatness.

This song was played over and over again on every rock station when it first came out. Not Robert Plant says he sick of this song. Guess I understand, but damn what a song. If you haven't already, listen to....Rock and Roll. I love that one. You grew up in the wrong decade. I know I'm coming in late here but I just want to say that we had very good acid back then. Zeppelin pretty much carried my generation through the trips we took. I'll be 68 January and I promise you my life has been wonderfully amazing. Meaning I love the life I've had 👍✨️

This song has had so many meanings in my life, the way all good music does. Before video, music had a much bigger life, songs weren’t boxed in, the could grow almost without limit. Currently I interpret the lady to be Lady Liberty. Buying a stairway to heaven is this obsession with buying utopia with borrowed money. I sure wish the tune would come to us.

The quote you read about infinite interpretations of the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven is true. People derive meaning from even a verse or two as well - the Satan lovers get theirs backwards in the "hedgerow". But, my favorite interpretation of the song starts with the singer telling the lady: "did you know? Your stairway lies on the whispering wind" HER stairway - yet, since the song ends with her still seeking to buy a stairway to heaven - it's clear she did not follow the piper to get what was waiting for her for free, prompting the singer to tell her "the tune will come to you at last - when all are one and one is all!" In other words, even though she didn't follow the piper to get her free stairway - she's evolving towards the essential truth of everything and once she's grasped that essential truth - her stairway will appear before her for free. So it's a cautionary tale that gives the lesson: not everything that is valuable can bought.
I'm guessing that by songwriter, you're a lyricist? The musical structure and performance of this masterpiece is jawdropping. And no one is going to mention that iconic drum fill?

people have been discussing the meaning of this song for over 50 years now. Plant would introduce this in concert by saying "This is a Song of Hope" other than that the band has stayed pretty much quiet.

I graduated high school in 86, and we were able to choose the song to walk to, and this was it. So it brings many feelings, but the strongest one was accomplishment since my twins were 6 months old when I 🎓.
Came out when I was a senior in high school...no wonder that these guys are famous, huh...

What they said about the lyrics, allow me to expand on that.
Coming from somebody who was there practically from stage one of rock music and listening to it for decades, you're on the wrong track by trying to decipher the lyrics. Back then (and especially in that particular era) we just listened to the music and when we could understand the words, we wrote our own story lines to them. No videos telling you what to think, it was you mixing your imagination with that of the musicians. Amazing that so seldom did anyone check the lyrics more than once--that is, if you actually owned the album.
Although nobody said it outright or even knew that's what we were doing, that was how we listened to it. So if you want to experience the music of the era the way everyone else did back then, the key is to relax, listen to the music and just let whatever lyrics you hear ignite your imagination. I'm just hoping that people still have the imagination available to enjoy it that way. Hope that helps.
Stairway, '73 MSG IMO is the greatest musical performance by any musician or group of musicians ever (including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, you name it). This song has to be heard live. That's where Plant notes, "I think this is song of hope." The live guitar solo is probably the greatest live solo of all time. Plant's blistering vocals that exude confidence. JPJ kills the "Piper," or the medieval Black Plague folk-lore of a Pipe who brings children to their disappearance... yet plant notes "There are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on." Bonzo kills the drums as always, but the more and more you look into Zep, you'll see how John Bonham was the greatest drummer in rock n roll history. People play his bass pedals with two feet because his jazz triplets were that fast. IMO, Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix & Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead (in no particular order). I hope you watch their live versions: Page just sends it... he doesn't care, he just goes, creates controlled chaos, can turn a slow blues into a face-melting gyration, or can create soft an beautiful songs like "The Battle of Evermore" or "Going to California." Welcome to the greatest band of all time.

You are supposed to meditate. Don't listen to the satanic message crap. That is BS that comes from a quarter I know very well. This is a poem, so you treat it like any poem. Read, meditate, etc. It reveals itself slowly over time. Some of the terms are from the UK, not American (ie, bustle in the hedgerow, May queen). 😂 Lol. Growing up during this time, lots of bible thumpers kept saying that Rock n Roll was the devils music. And they would go to extraordinary lengths to prove their point. Like going through every album playing it backwards at different speeds to find out if they can find satanic messages. Seriously all they had to do was look in their own congregation to find satanic stuff going on. Priests, pastors and ministers for years have been assaulting young boys and girls and making claims of the devil made them do it when really it was just their own lack of self control.
One perspective to understand, is that this kind of music was considered very controversial for it's time. There was no other band playing music like this and it took rock n roll to a different level. Rock n roll was already considered to be music from the devil from the older generation and the "hippies" that Led Zeppelin was and the "hippies" that listened to that kind of music were feared for their anti establishment view points. And so it was easy to begin rumors in an attempt to destroy their reputation which probably just made more people curious about them and fanned the flames of their popularity. It was an us vs them time period.
Yeah I grew up with this music and we never worried much about what it "meant". An awful lot of rock & roll from this period just uses lyrics as another instrument. You're not supposed to analyze it to death, or even a little bit. Think of each lyric as a picture in a collage. Don't worry about what they all mean together, just think of what the music is doing at the time a particular lyric is sung, and what those words mean to you at that moment.
This song is an emotional voyage on a river of music. Just enjoy it. Don't overthink it.

A serious interview with Jimmy Page was taking about the beetle's start of playing songs backwards and how they were a prime candidate. Page mentioned that the songs were hard enough writing one way around. If you listen to anything backwards long enough something weird will present itself. It's mostly perception

The thing about satanic backtracked lyrics came up during one of the Evangelical Christian inspired periods of mass hysteria about satanism in rock music and is purely ludicrous. I saw an interview with Robert Plant where he said that he had a hard enough time getting the lyrics right going forward let alone try to figure them out going backward! 🙂 He said in that same interview that he was still trying to figure out the meaning of the song. It seems clear enough to me that it is meant to be left to the listener to derive what it means to him or her individually.
It's really something to listen to real art in the form of music done unapologetically with some clues from the lyrics but so much room to put in your own inferences. They wrote this in the English Country Estate they rented to create this album - all the band members and friends stayed there for some time. These are very old thousand year old places with lots of history, many deaths, said to be haunted. I was reading interviews with Robert Plant that the music compositions were coming along easily but he was having a hard time with the lyrics. So in the middle of the night he just got inspired to write lyrics to this and they just flowed out of him as if there was someone standing beside him just telling him those lyrics word for word. Makes you wonder if a spirit of a Queen or someone had a story to tell. It feels like a tale from the Middle Ages with knights and castles and mystery. I get bits and pieces - but that this spirit is letting us know life is fleeting but there is hope for us, we can determine how we live our lives, we can choose live our lives for money and riches or we live our lives for our own Good and the Good of others. And maybe these spirits do show themselves to us from time to time to guide us and get us back on the right path. This is just some inferences I get - its so important to sit down and just read thru the words of the song and I would encourage you to do that with this and most every Led Zepplin song since they are all deep and realize this song it is fantastic poetry even without the music. Led Zepplin were serious song writers, making serious concept albums with amazing music which consists of acoustic instrumentation along with more heavy rock instruments which makes such a unique blend. I wouldn't give the playing backwards much credence - you really had to do things to a vinyl record to get that meaning.
There's a Line in the Song ( Sometimes Words Have Two Meaning's) 🤔 That Song was written in One Night in a Haunted Castle in England. Parents Hated it and if they knew that you were listening 🎧. They would have thrown it out after they Broken it into a Hundred Pieces....

Can you imagine how difficult it would be to tape a song that sounds this good forwards while having international lyrics when played backwards? It’s total nonsense. when you can, always go for a live version. This song is much better live and doing live versions shows you the real talent of the artists. Especially the 60's and 70's artists that had real talent. It seems now they choose people for their looks and auto tune them. They didn't do that back then. The only song I recommend watching the studio version of is Bohemian Rhapsody because they have visuals that can't be done on stage and Queen sounds as good live as they did on their albums.

Just for reference play any reaction of your own voice backwards and listen to the words that you can hear. You can do that with any song. You may be addressing Satan right now! LOL Seriously, this is a classic, and Led Zeppelin has more rumors about them than any other band. Some true, most false. The Satan crap is all BS. However, Jimmy Page did practice in the Magickal arts and thus many rumors started from that. The band did nothing to quell the false rumors at the time as it only added to their mystique back then. Page's practices centered on his ability to play the guitar incredibly well, and his ability to channel forces of the universe through himself while playing. You can see this in many of their live performances. They are the greatest guitar performances ever recorded (or seen for those that weren't recorded)! The live version of this one from MSG 1973 has an extended guitar solo that illustrates exactly what I mean.

I agree with bluewizard. When rock first hit the scene in the 60’s and 70’s, American religious zealots looked for any ways to demonstrate that it was evil and “devil music.” They played every hit band’s songs backward in search of anything that sounded close to evidence of their claim.
And that one sample you played… did you notice how all the words were muffled except that the word “satan” was exceptionally clear? That was a doctored track. The 70’s version of photoshop.
