There's a story behind the band's raw emotional reaction to the tribute performance. The guy in the bowler hat playing drums is their original drummer's son. John Bonham passed back in 1981. When they were being honoured, they wanted Jason there and he told them he couldn't be there. So, when they saw him on stage playing his dad's parts, in his dad's hat, it hit hard.
Thank you for this information. I did not know this. I knew about JB's son playing the drums there, but didn't know it was kept secret from LZ. That's an important dimension to the performance. So, again, thank you.
If you check out the KC Honors again you’ll see Jason bathed in light. And the choir with the bowlers was a heavenly Chior. Tribute to Bonham the GOAT.
When you said , "Your generation missed out on some of the best music ever made", you are right (in my opinion). Music from the 60's and 70's was full of passion and a message and some of it is still being listened to today. Kids, ask your parents / grandparents what music was like when they grew up and if your able, have a listen, you might be surprised.
An absolute classic. Next one for you from Led Zeppelin- Kashmir. No need for breakdowns, they lay the stories out for you! Just sit back and let the music wash over you!
Kashmir. I superb. Also, for that mystical, magical, other worldly experience, Going To California and The Battle of Evermore (featuring gorgeous guest backing vocals from Sandy Denny)
The “Celebration Day” live version of “Kashmir” is from the last Led Zeppelin concert, where the three remaining members got together with Jason Bonham, John Bonham’s son, on drums. An incredible concert, from incredible musicians.
The thing about rock music from back in the day is that it was all musical talent. The people actually played the instruments, the singers had to be able to sing...it was pure talent.
Remember, no auto tune in the 70’s. Pure talent. Check out Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Kansas, Heart, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Enjoy your journey!
When a I saw LedZeppelin perform years later”Kashmir”, I was in awe. The band sounded better than the studio performance. That is my opinion. To me this band is the best of the best. They were super young and Rock n Roll was just beginning. No ding sounds the same. They take their musicianship to the highest level. They were born to do this.
Many agree with you that the original can never be topped - after all , it set the standard. Ann and sister Nancy Wilson were not trying to top Led Zeppelin with their rendition in the tribute, they were paying respect to the kings who gave our generation an anthem. Ann and Nancy have done many, many Led Zeppelin songs throughout their career, including at least one cover in every concert (usually Black Dog, or Rock n' Roll), and it became the logical choice to ask them to be the ones to do the homage at the Kennedy Center Honors. Heart was always respectful in their covers and never tried to "make them their own". They stayed mostly true to the Zeppelin originals adding only a few minor personal tweaks. It takes Rock Godess's to pay proper tribute to Rock Gods. Two great reactions! I enjoyed them both!
LZ was a major musical experience in my life. I can tell you the very best way to experience this group is to start at the beginning and listen album by album until the end. Have a great time, we sure did! ☮️ ❤️ 🎶 🎸 🎶
That’s why we used to go to the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd laser light show at the museum of natural history. We would get a dose and then smoke all the way there and then watch the laser light show from Zepplin or Pink Floyd and talk about going to another world for real! It’s definitely that kind of music. It takes you on a journey.
Now you see why so many heavy metal musicians cite Led Zeppelin as an inspiration. Any time I hear a Jimmy Paige guitar solo, my hair stands on end. Every time I listen to this song, I have to air guitar and scat out the guitar licks in the breakdown. There are so many Led Zeppelin songs that I could write out a novel on here for songs you should listen to on your own time.
The thing that is so outstanding to me is that Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones wrote the music to song first, Robert Plant later wrote the lyrics to it. That shows just how incredibly talented they are.
That was the first track I heard on the first record player in our house I think , on my brother’s bright purple vinyl……around 1971/2 . Just amazing ….prior to that , my mother liked Buddy Holly 😬
Amazing that he's only 22 years old here. Can you imagine doing something at the age of 22 and having the President and First Lady host a celebration of what you did 40 years later? 😮
"Since I've Been Loving You," "Achilles Last Stand," just don't expect Zep songs to sound alike as they are very versatile and creative. "Immigrant Song" is a real banger.
With Led Zeppelin I strongly suggest starting with the album version, and then the live versions. Led Zeppelin was known for their extremely well crafted studio work. The reason people always want the live versions is because they already know the studio version, probably heard it a lot. And Zeppelin is fantastic live. But their songs were birthed in the studio.
This is one of the greatest songs ever made. The structure, the journey, storytelling, the instrumentation, the voice. This is the definition of legendary.
There's a reason this song is on just about every list of the greatest song ever! The entire composition is brilliant! The lyrics were written with such an ambiguity that allows the listener to interpret them as they need to. The song builds as if you're actually climbing the Stairway to Heaven and then crescendos with that awesome Jimmy Page solo! As you dive deeper into their rabbit hole keep in mind, they were only Led Zeppelin for 12 years. Depending on the song, their sound crossed over into many different genres. Sometimes more than one genre in the same song! Welcome to Led Zeppelin! One of the greatest to ever do it!
This is a must do: there was a tribute to Led Zeplin where Heart performed Stairway to Heaven atthe Kennedy Center Honors. It brought Led Zeplin to tears. It was the single most amazing live performance I have EVER seen (aside from Phil Collins doing In The Air Tonight
70's music was/is all about story telling and taking you on a journey. Our generation (Boomers) were incredibly fortunate to have these musical masters playing the soundtrack to our lives.
Soundtrack to our lives! Thats it! Cannot imagine a life without that music, its with me to the very end and beyond, there is a list of music to be played at my funeral....
Over the last 50 some years of my listening to music from the 1920s to recently, there is something special about this era of music that lifts it above the rest. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, the Beatles, Rolling Stones........you just cannot beat it. It is no surprise that in 2024, both the Beatles and Stones were on the top of the charts AGAIN! You just cannot beat the era before "Pitch Correct" was invented in 79, making out of tune singers magically match the pitch of the band with technology derived from the Hiel talk box. Suddenly everyone could sing, models, dancers,......a lot of very pretty people. Hence,...MTV was invented for those with faces for TV but their voices were not made for radio. That is why there are no "real" music videos before 1980ish. Not caring about the actual visuals and instead imagining them in your head beat music videos. For the best Led Zeppelin live, watch either their BBC sessions, or the 1973 SONG REMAINS THE SAME concert movie, for awesome live performances. Later in their career, their wear and tear was starting to show from the road. They seemed tired to me in Knebworth in 79, and Earl's court in 74 was still a little weary. They toured so much, it showed.
My mind is completely blown that you’ve never heard this song before. It’s so iconic. I’m very glad that you’re taking the time to hear it now. It’s such a beautiful song Led Zeppelin was amazing!
Britain produced most of the greatest metal and rock bands ever, for a tiny island we sure hit big! It's amazing that today people are only just being introduced to them, never too late. 👍🇬🇧
Heard this in my teenage yrs back in 75. Amazing music back then. Led zeppelin, Kansas, lynard skynard, queen, Doogie brothers, elo, I can go on and on. Music back then was pure talent.
Led Zeppelin has 40+ of my all-time favourite sings. Tea for One. No Quarter. Over the Hills and Far Away. How Many More Times. Rain Song. Lemon Song. In My Time of Dying. Ramble On. What Is and What Should Never Be. Since I've Been Loving You. When The Levee Breaks. Kashmir. The Battle of Evermore. I'm Gonna Crawl. Stairway to Heaven. Hey, Hey, What Can I Do. Travelling Riverside Blues. Going to California. In The Light. Dazed and Confused. In The Evening. Fool In The Rain. Ten Years Gone. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Rock and Roll. Achilles Last Stand. The Song Remains the Same. You Shook Me. Black Dog. Immigrant Song (live) The Ocean. Whole Lotta Love. Thank You. Bring it on Home. That's the Way. Friends. Gallows Pole. Tangerine. Misty Mountain Hop. Etc. Etc. And the list just goes on.
Part of me is envious. You just listened for the first time to Stairway. Congratulations! Welcome aboard. I recommend In the Light and When the Levee Breaks. However, any Zeppelin song will be pleasing. Thank you.
Indeed. If you are unfamiliar with music, especially rock music before 1980, you are very much missing out. The Golden Age of Rock is the mid 60’s to the late 70’s and will never be duplicated. With all it’s sub-genres ( folk rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, rock and roll, hard rock, acid rock, progressive rock, art rock, funk rock, pop rock, soul) it dominated culture, style, social and political thought, fashion, and the music business (recordings, the radio airwaves, live concerts) in such totality - exceeding everything else before or since. And it was real music. Real musicians playing real instruments in their own way, written by themselves, in their own timing. No sampling, no nitwits with computers, no autotune and protools, no nonsense. It is probably impossible to imagine in light of the last few decades of the music scene and song composition corporatization and homogenization into sameness.
🤗YES!! The Live at MSG performance of "Stairway to Heaven" is a MUST on a Led Zeppelin journey!!!💯 That is where he'll see the true greatness of the song and Led Zeppelin!! 👊❤❤❤
I'm jealous of anyone who gets to hear these songs for the very first time. One of the reasons I watch reaction videos is to vicariously experience that again through the reactor.
Love seeing these young realizing the greatness of the 70’s. Keep on keeping it alive! We were young, in love, and really cared and wanted the best for all.
I was a teenager when this song came out. I saved up my money so I could buy this album. I played this song over and over on my porch on hot summer nights. Great memories!
I was a year old when this song came out. I think I heard it for the first time when I was 11 or 12. It's great to watch the younger generation hear this for the first time!!! My favorite Led Zeppelin Song is "The Battle of Evermore". Check it out!
Black Dog, When The Levee Breaks, Ramble On, D'yer Mak'er, What Is and What Never Should Be, In My Time Of Dying, Immigrant Song.... those are just off the top of my head.
🥰You felt it!! Beautiful. Love your genuine reactions and the way you feel the music. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!!😊 As others have said.... the 1973 Live at Madison Square Garden performance of this song is a MUST on a Led Zeppelin journey!!👊 Keep in mind, I was an infant when this song was released in 1971. Zeppelin was playing in my house growing up (I loved it) but did not understand the greatness of their music until the mid 80's (15yrs after it's release) when I entered high school. Their music is timeless. Do yourself a huge favor and do the live at MSG 1973 performance of "Stairway". You won't regret it!!! It's a spiritual experience!!💯💯💯 Peace and light to all...✌💞
Now the live version! The musicianship and spontaneity and soul depth is incredible in their live performances. LZ will inceease your subscriber count guaranteed
I don't know if that's right Cliff. You do get this music. It's been made. It's like regretting not watching Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, or not being their when Beethoven was composing Symphony No.9. This is art, this stays with us forever. You're listening 50 years later, in another 50 years this song will still be being played. It's the most beautiful thing about art, it makes us immortal. So as Jim Morrison said, "O Great Creator of Being: Give us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives."
IMO, the studio version is the best version versus their live performances that you can find on UA-cam. This is how we were introduced to the song, with no visuals except the album cover. To me, the best way to listen to a song for the first time is to close your eyes like you did. We did not expect music to be a visual experience, it was auditory and mental. I am so glad you appreciate it.
Jimmy Page is the guitarist, known to be one of the best. He was playing a custom double neck guitar, made for him by Gibson in 1969. That was made in Nashville TN,
Led zep were ground breaking for their time as well as now . They formed in 68 first two albums 69 , this track is of their fourth album. Try reading the lyrics - they are ambiguous and mean different things to different people but well worth going into. In general terms it advocatas turning away from materialism towards finding spiritual contentment . Robert Plants happy place is Wales which is a very beautiful rural mountainous country on the west side of the uk - i look to the west and my spirit is crying for freedom ... he was involved in the intelligent end of the hippy movement in the 60's and this is reflected in his writing. the bustle in the hedgerow and the may queen refererences are about the renewal and coming back to life in the Spring. It fits perfectly with Jimmy Pages slow crescendo music which almost imperceptably increases in tempo , intensity and volume. there is also a gentle and beautifully expressed reminder that we are not immortal. As requested below you should definitley see the live version Madison Square Garden 1973 the perfomance is magical and Jimmy Pages guitar solo is legendary. You will be kicking yourself if you do not do a deep dive into their music now impossible to describe the variety , muscianship , quality of writing and the magic that happens when these four men play together. worth doing stuff fromthe first album first just so you unfderstand the vision and evolution- Babe i'm gonna leave you , dazed and confused , your time is gonna come , i can't qiuit you baby , How many more times all unmissable off that album - the whole album is worth hearing. If you want a masterclass in percussion do the live version of Moby Dick - that'll bring you up to speed.
There's a story behind the band's raw emotional reaction to the tribute performance. The guy in the bowler hat playing drums is their original drummer's son. John Bonham passed back in 1981. Bonham passed in September of 1980. 😢
Bonham is one of the GOATs. I was fortunate enough to visit his grave site when I worked in the UK back in 2021. It was an amazing experience.
If you check out the KC Honors again you’ll see Jason bathed in light. And the choir with the bowlers was a heavenly Chior. Tribute to Bonham the GOAT.
On John Bonham's drum kit, too
When you said , "Your generation missed out on some of the best music ever made", you are right (in my opinion). Kids, ask your parents / grandparents what music was like when they grew up and if your able, have a listen, you might be surprised.
"Some" of it is still being listened to today. You mean "almost all of it".
An absolute classic. Next one for you from Led Zeppelin- Kashmir. No need for breakdowns, they lay the stories out for you! Just sit back and let the music wash over you!
The greatest song ever written
Kashmir. I superb. Also, for that mystical, magical, other worldly experience, Going To California and The Battle of Evermore (featuring gorgeous guest backing vocals from Sandy Denny)
All of Physical Graffiti...
Another vote for Kashmir
The “Celebration Day” live version of “Kashmir” is from the last Led Zeppelin concert, where the three remaining members got together with Jason Bonham, John Bonham’s son, on drums. An incredible concert, from incredible musicians.
Shocking to realize this song is over 50 years old but still perfect.
True art is ageless.
Yes and I've lived through all those years and it's still my fav song
The thing about rock music from back in the day is that it was all musical talent. The people actually played the instruments, the singers had to be able to sing...it was pure talent.
And THAT'S what got them to the top..
Nothing else...
Just like Queen 👑🫶

Too many Seppo bands in that list; most of the best rock bands in the 70s came from Britain.
Don’t forget Pink Floyd
Yes, Fleetwood Mac!
Esta canción te desnuda el alma, corazón. El camino de la vida. ❤
Come on, brothers, baby there you go. That was the best music. Never duplicate it always imitated.
When us old folks say that our generation had the best music - we are definitely telling the truth.
“Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.”

You need to listen Hart's album the road home, John Paul Jones is one of the musicians. A great live album, live in a small club in Seattle.

And what about Black Dog tribute from Beth Gart?
Their cover of Battle of Evermore is phenomenal.

We used too hear stuff like this everyday on the radio

With Karen Carpenter!!
Man i would have loved to grow up back then, i was a decade or two late (born in 1990).

This is a rabbit hole most definitely worth going down! Led Zeppelin are gods! 🥰
Jason Bonham played the drums in the tribute. The whole band are like his dad. Very proud.
Vinny Paul was about the drummer that could've been considered for a while to come close RIP Vinny Paul.
Whole Lotta Love is pure Zeppelin
He already watched it
Yep!! You definitely need more Zeppelin in your life 😊 best band ever! They don't have a bad song
The Song Remains The Same sequeing into The Rain Song live at Madison Square Garden '73. The concert is also called The Song Remains The Same.
Black Dog, When The Levee Breaks, Ramble On, D'yer Mak'er, What Is and What Never Should Be, In My Time Of Dying, Immigrant Song.... those are just off the top of my head.
Nothing like a journey, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd did this so well
🥰You felt it!! Beautiful. Love your genuine reactions and the way you feel the music. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!!😊
As others have said.... the 1973 Live at Madison Square Garden performance of this song is a MUST on a Led Zeppelin journey!!👊 Keep in mind, I was an infant when this song was released in 1971.

Haven't listened to this in 10 years since my mom passed. I am happy crying lol
I'm 50, and you just experienced my childhood. Great reaction!
My favorite song of all times. Led Zepplin is iconic!
Since I’ve been loving you live or Kashmir are fantastic among many more✌️🙏👍
Jimmy Page is the guitarist, known to be one of the best. He was playing a custom double neck guitar, made for him by Gibson in 1969. That was made in Nashville TN,
*54 years old. What a song!*
They play this like once a week on the radio, Spotify, Sirius. No way you could make it your whole life without hearing it before.
music that speaks to the soul
I am 60 years old and I can't imagine to hear this song for the first time
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones,The Who, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, Dire Straits, ....all great British Bands....
I'm glad you listened to the studio version after the Heart tribute, it's the best way to hear and appreciate both!
Best music 60’s & 70’s, I can’t ever feel in awe of hip hop! Rap , this is talent
