Life is Strange Episode 5: Polarized Let's Play gameplay walkthrough.
Life Is Strange is an episodic interactive drama graphic adventure video game developed by Dontnod Entertainment, and published by Square Enix. The game's plot focuses on Maxine Caulfield, a photography student who discovers that she has the ability to rewind time at any moment, leading her every choice to enact the butterfly effect. The game will consist of five episodes. With six to eight weeks between each episode, it released its first on 30 January 2015. Life Is Strange is available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 via digital distribution.
In the game, story and character arc serve as the central point rather than traditional graphic adventure tropes like point-and-click puzzles. The player's actions will be able to adjust the narrative as it unfolds, and reshape it once allowed to travel back in time. Themes of memory and identity are used to convey an adolescent sense of nostalgia, while the allegory of inner struggle is derived from the mystical aspects.
Development of Life Is Strange began in April 2013. It was formed with an episodic format in mind, for reasons both financial and creative. The developers conducted research on the setting by travelling to the Pacific Northwest, and subverted known archetypes to make the characters. At release, Life Is Strange was acclaimed by critics, most of which praised the character development and game mechanic. It had sold one million copies by the end of July 2015.

The worst part about the alternate ending (Sacrifice Chloe) is that the Chloe in that time will die thinking that her lover/best friend just left her without a trace, and that Max had never cared to call or even text, that Max didn't love her anymore. The worst part of that ending was that Chloe dies thinking that everyone in her life really would "never miss her punk-ass."

Emma Wolf the worst part about sacrificing Arcadia bay is that everyone in the town dies (and who really wants to kill Warren 😒) also it’s pretty obvious that whenever we save chloe the universe tries to balance itself by killing other things ie the birds and the whales... and the massive storm that happens. So by saving chloe you don’t accomplish anything these bad events will continue to happen as long as chloe stays alive. Plus if you sacrifice chloe the teacher gets arrested without anyone else getting hurt, and Nathan can get the help he needs/deserves for his mental health in prison 🤷♂️

(biased Pricefield theory) In my brain, Max saved the Bay the first time around, but regretting it after realizing life w/o Chloe is garbage and going back to Jefferson's class but losing her memory in the process. Thats why she sees the tornado so much and she's seeing the people in the diner in the nightmare guilt-tripping her cos she already knows subconsciously that she would need to sacrifice them get Chloe, but for the last loop she finally does. BAE OVER BAE

+starcobra2 I actually compared the cars with each other though I don't care much about Warren (sorry). And you see the slightly yellow rim of one of the tires. It's not the same as the one on Warren's car. The car you see in this ending could be seen before near the diner (I think in episode 2 or 3).
I chose to sacrifice Chloe in my game.
Especially what Chloe said convinced me that this is the right ending. "My mom deserves so much more than to be killed by a storm in a fucking diner.. Even David deserves her alive".. All those people we met.. Joyce, Kate, Warren, David.. Everyone just dies because of Max's actions. Everyone would have had a life to continue and probably has families and friends outside Arcadia. Yes.. You loose a loved one by sacrifcing Chloe.. But if you sacrifice the town.. Thousands of people would loose a loved one.. What would they say?.. One importand thing to learn in life is that sometimes things happen and you can do nothing to stop it. You have to accept this and undestand that life goes on. If Max hadn't gotten her power, Chloe would have died. The Power offered Max the chance to change this outcome.. But the rewind-power also gave her extra time with Chloe. That time with Chloe will always be in Max's heart. She will always remember it. The path is the goal. This is what Chloe was saying.. And she also was accepting her fate.
Also if you think about it: if you sacrifce the town, you basicly accept the offer and pull Chloe out of her timeline. But in the other ending, you don't actually "sacrifice" Chloe. You just let time go on like it was meant to be in the first place, accepting the fact that life goes on and you can't change everything.
I can't imagine all those people confronting me about it, like "what the fuck is wrong with you? You got your girlfriend but I lost my entire fucking family in that storm!"

+None Agreed. Chloe was kinda of selfish the whole game. In the nightmare. The other Max may have sounded wrong but she actually right. Chloe manipulates Max too much. In my eyes though Chloe wasn't completely a good person. Even though I think the sacrifice Arcadia bay ending is slightly more fitting. It makes me wonder for anyone who didn't sacrifice Chloe, did they put themselves in the situation of the townspeople during the storm/tornado. I am not sure whether to call the sacrifice Arcadia bay ending selfish or not though? Many people tell me it isn't selfish.
Why are the people who chose to sacrifice Chloe so angry at the people who chose to sacrifice Arcadia Bay? I mean, I've never seen so much self-righteous indignation over an ending before. People choosing the one you didn't choose doesn't invalidate your choice. They have their reasons for it, and you're spending your time making them feel like horrible people.
Get over yourselves.
I chose to sacrifice Chloe and I'm not upset. There are no right or wrong answers with the choices since its your choice.

It's the idea of sacrificing one person or thousands. It's an extremely tough decision either way. I'd find it difficult to throw a switch that killed one person to save ten people, too. Saying that, I sacrificed Chloe.

+HonorThyGamer To me it's just that Mari and Stacy were so quick to judge everybody in the previous episodes, always taking the moral high ground about every issues... and then they make this incredibly hard decision and just say "nope, I regret nothing". It's just weird, killing everybody to see two person they ship getting together. Meanwhile it's unforgivable for David to hit Chloe and so on... Once you make the choice of sacrificing everything are you really better than the people that bullied Kate for instance? "Sorry Kate I know I did everything I coul to save you but now I really want to fuck Chloe so you'll have to die okay bye"

That's a valid point, though in the end they realize it's a game. I'm sure if it was in real life, they'd save the people from the town.
Awesome playthrough! Picking Chloe over Arcadia Bay was the right choice to me. As for anybody who says their choices didn't matter, in games like these (Mass Effect, Dragon Age, any Telltale game) it's all about the journey, not the destination. Usually, we're all bound to get the same ending, but the choices and emotions behind those choices are our own. Thanks for the entertainment! Can't wait to see what you do next! n.n

In my opinion (since everyone else is putting theirs out there), I sacrificed Chloe, because it was morally the right thing to do and I'm always the one who tries to save everyone. Plus, I thought that ending gave justice. Chloe knew what was at stake and she told Max she was ready. Two more things: 1. THEY KISS!! Hello!? 2. The new track for the ending and just pretty much the whole cutscene. When I first played it, yes I sacrificed Chloe, but then I replayed for my alternative choice and I was actually a little upset because to me it was quick. Town is a wreck, bodies on the ground, no sign of survivors. That's depressing. And then finally there was the guilt of all the planned futures of those people who you helped in past times? They're dead. It was all for not. You just-dead.
In conclusion, Stacy & Mari. It was fun it was awesome watching you two play. Of course, one of you ALWAYS deduct the truth with ease and so well thought thinking. I absolutely admire that. Congratulations!

This game is a lot more powerful after you've lost someone and you wanted to do the thing you wanted to do with them
Everyone in the diner that was in there whenever Max was going to get the photo from Warren is dead in the "Save Arcadia Bay" option because while going back to get the photo from Warren the diner blows up. When you're with Chloe in the end you're not there to make sure it won't happen, so Joyce, Warren, Frank, Pompidou, etc would all be dead in that ending.
I'm glad the episode five with Stacy got made, it just wasn't the same without her. On the subject of the morality Max's time travel powers in episode three I sided with Chloe vs David and then rewound quickly when that led to Joyce kicking David out. I just panicked at the thought of breaking up their marriage, but later on I realized holy shit I just overruled Joyce's free will to keep in a marriage she just said she wanted out of, I'm a monster.
Honestly I had to sacrifice Chloe. She really got me when she said her mom deserved more than this and that for once she should accept her fate. Also this is just a theory but I think Chloe may keep dying. In a lot of scenes where she dies or almost die they close in on her necklace, which is what they did in this ending.
HOWEVER; I do believe both endings are valid and understand both choices

You girls did an awesome job, taking time to go through things, pointing out symbols which I would never have bothered noticing, theorizing and bringing up real life issues which most people who have just brushed off because it's well, just a game. In my playthrough I sacrificed Chloe (a moment that affected me more than any movie or novel I've read). What I've come to realize is that there's no "good" ending. maybe a right one? but neither one is good. What makes this playthrough particularly sweet is that the ones playing are two best friends in rl. speaks volumes about their friendship that they'd choose the same. it also lends to the experience of playing this game. tbh I'm actually a bit envious - it's not every day you find someone like that. all that being said, I actually hoped you'd choose the other ending this time since it's both of you now :{p

Im kind of irritated that they call max on her faults, but when it comes to Chloe, they disregard any of her criticisms. I love this playthrough, but I think they go little overboard with the chloe love.
My boyfriend and I have this little 2 person band and we learned the last song. He hasn't played life is strange and he's very confused as to why I always break down crying when we play it.

Whew... well, I cry at both endings. I find it hard to even watch this one all the way through, because something in me just doesn't believe Max and Chloe will actually be happy. I worry they'll never recover, they'll be devastated despite having each other. (I've always assumed no one else survives, because I think that fits the deeper themes and "message" of the game, but respect that not everyone feels the same).
It's hard to watch "sacrifice Chloe" ending because she is my favorite character, and I so hate the idea that (in at least one reality) Chloe's life ends there in the bathroom with Nathan. Never having reconnected with Max, learned the truth about Rachel's disappearance, told anyone about being dosed, or helped prevent what happened to her&Rachel&Kate from happening to anyone else. Still feeling alone, abandoned, hurt, angry at the world, etc. That's all so fucking tragic to me, it hurts typing it.
With "sacrifice Chloe" ending, it brings a little comfort to think that to "our" Max, her week with Chloe was real and special. She got to "go back" and have what so many of us wish we could, some final quality time with a loved one before their death. And Max got to prevent Jefferson from harming others*. But I was so invested in these characters - death, loss, and futility are such a hard note to end on.
*Got to say though - with all the awful, victim-blaming, apologist reactions other players had to the kidnappings/dosings/etc, my heart also aches knowing there are other Jeffersons in the real world. And it won't end without major cultural change.
Anyway. Sorry for the extra long comment. I realize this is years later, but still, thanks so much for playing this. Your commentary, humor, immersion, theories and sensitivity about some of the big issues, makes this the best Let's Play I've seen by far.

Headcanon: No matter which ending you choose, Max's brain is still riddled with time travel tumors. Also, in the other ending, the town is still wiped out by a second magic tornado because you saved Kate.

And then all of time and space completely unravels, leaving Max's surreal nightmare as the only extant reality.

My canon ending is saving Chloe and I accept that everyone in Arcadia Bay was lost. I still stand with my decision.

I feel like this is what I guess most would consider the morally wrong ending... but if you're playing the game roleplay style... it kind of makes the most sense. The amount of times you save Chloe over and over, she really is all that matters to Max, it's selfish... but it makes sense.

This ending is short. Add a special Max and Chloe scene. And by special I mean "special". If you kiss her anyway.

I get what you mean tho, if they take the time to reflect and take responsibility for their actions means that person can be redeemed, but the way you guys put it into words was kinda funny. I don't blame Nathan, I felt really bad for him when he was trying to wake Chloe up.

Well this was disappointing. Max kills an entire town to save Chloe, who loves Rachel, and is only settling for Max. Max now has leverage in their relationship, so Chloe can never escape. Death and destruction will follow them until Max can let go, or until she loses the option entirely. The trauma for knowing you killed an entire town will weigh on Chloe, and Max will have an even harder time keeping her alive and well. This ending also goes against the moral of the story, which is learning to let go. It is your choice though, I just hoped you'd make the logical choice.

I think you make a good point, because even if by sacrificing the town, all death and destruction ceases, it doesn't change the fact that the deaths still weight down Chloe. The lives that weight down Chloe would be Kate Marsh, her mother and step father, as well as Warren Graham and possibly Justin Williams and even Mark Jefferson. The reasons as to why those characters will weight her down. Kate Marsh, is Max's best friend. She was there for Max when Chloe wasn't around and during the scene before the Hospital where Max visits Kate Chloe apologizes and says she was glad that Max answered that call, picking to support the one she loved for a friend in need, just like how she needed Max throughout the week. Her mother and stepfather because even though her parents get to her in the alternate reality we can see how much Chloe truly appreciates her mother for everything she does to make sure she is okay she tells max that they're always there even if her bestfriend decides to nod off during the movie, and her stepdad, David Madsen, at the end she is appreciative that he saved Max from the Dark Room and drops the nickname Stepdouche. She will also feel the weight of Warren because he took down the bully that was out to get Max and stopped Nathan from hurting her. You can say even Justin and Mark Jefferson weight Chloe down. Both of those characters she meets and in ways they both help Max. Chloe knows of what Jefferson did but she doesn't experience it so she has to only go off of what she knows and she knows Jefferson is Max's idol and she is happy for Max winning the Everyday Heroes contest and congratulates her for it.
There are some other characters as well but you're right in that it will give Max leverage. Chloe again realizes she is meant to die and she has to. She accepts her death in more than one reality and ask each time for Max to make the decision of ending her life and both times Max can choose to rewind and alter that decision to keep Chloe alive and suffering. In the alternate Chloe knows she is slowly dying and she is causing her parents to suffer by going in massive debt to save her life, she asks Max to end her life to stop the suffering and that cost was a lot more minor being in just her Dad dying, however, her world was her Dad and Max choose to either sacrifice Chloe or William Price and (you get the option to choose again) Max chooses to Sacrifice William to save Chloe at the cost of Chloe losing her world. Max tells Chloe about that choice, and puts the weight of her Dad's death on Chloe, That is weight number one.
and the second big weight on Chloe is that last choice to save the bay and everyone in it or save Chloe again and again Chloe says she knows she needs to be sacrificed. Chloe knows she is being selfish to ask Max to save her. She does lean towards Max having to choose to save her. The moral like you said is learning to let go, which Max cannot do. She can't let go that Kate was bullied by David, by the evidence of taking a photo or intervening and choosing to either get him fired, etc She can't let go that Nathan beat up Warren so she can choose not to stop him. I won't write every instance in where Max learns to not let go but there are a lot.
So you're definitely right that this ending goes against the moral of the story, which is learning to let go which again Max fails to learn and as a result puts the weights on Chloe and each day Chloe has to live knowing she was asking to be killed and save those who deserve like her mom to live by which she directly quotes that. (Chloe makes that quote.) It will work as leverage for Chloe to stay and she does settle for Max (Chloe that is settles) because her heart is with Rachel Amber but Max went out of the way to save her life on multiple occasions and she does love Max but in a different manner.
So, I am with you, in that, I just hoped she would make the logical choice. In my playthrough, that is what I thought of before making my choice.

Thanks for agreeing and sharing these points. I chose to save Arcadia Bay because the game basically tells you to do so. The girls even made theories about it, and the theories were confirmed, yet they went against it. Then again, I wasn't that surprised that they did, it fits their personality.
Mal Saiyan You're welcome, and I agree with you. It does fit their personality, but that is why this game is so great. It shows even with the universe telling you what you should do, the logic is sound on what you should do, you can still choose to go against it. I guess that is life and why its called Life is strange lol you can always choose to go against what is morally and logically right.

Can someone explain to me the point of protecting the blue Jay's eggs? Like it said "you left the eggs protected" like what does that do? How in the world are birds are going to help? Like they're not even hatched. Sure you get a picture for a trophy, but that's it. What else??
I love and hate thinking about these kinds of decisions hypothetically. On the one hand, of course, the lives of the many outweigh the life of the one. But, I also understand the urge to protect those closest to you above all others, I might make the same decision to kill many to save the ones close to me. So I don't think Max, or Mari or Stacy, are crazy or sociopathic for making the decision to sacrifice Arcadia Bay and save Chloe. However, say there was someone else in Arcadia Bay that Max was going to let be destroyed to save Chloe that either had the same power as Max or had the power to kill Chloe and Max(Who in this scenario will save Chloe at any cost). Say this person also had people they cared about that were going to be killed by this disaster. I'm not sure I could blame them for killing Chloe and Max to save the ones that are close to them. It is sort of the same decision. Everything always comes down to perspective I think. Also, another little addition that I find really bittersweet or cold or just horrible is how hard you guys tried to save Kate and told her that there were people who cared for her and would look out for her including you followed by less than a week later ditching her to probably be crushed in a building by a tornado, I would probably implode if I had to make this decision, especially with all the relationships I had formed with people in town. And I'm confused as to how letting all these people in Arcadia Bay die will stop time from being screwed up because Chloe is still alive. If time or destiny or whatever wanted Chloe dead, why does letting this happen stop it from still trying to kill her? All of these decisions just befuddle my mind, I guess life really is strange, haha. Anyways, I just wanted to ramble a little bit. Thank you Mari and Stacy for letting us ride this roller coaster with you. I enjoyed especially how thoughtful and engaged you two were, I don't think there is enough of that in life in general. I hope you keep it up, and keep it strange :)

It doesn't. The environment is totally fucked now, so even more people will die and it's gonna kill Chloe about a good 4-5 more times before Max is finally going to get it.

I totally stayed for Stacy, it was sooo hard not to watch that stream
Well... this was weird. Almost like the series finale of Xena: warrior princess-- except reversed. And we 'know' Xena and Gabrielle were (ahem) bed buddies... So, do Max and Chloe finally realize that love is love and their love needs...consumating? Just wondering. Great Let's Play. Even though I was very late to the movie.
This ending was definitely better than the other one in my view. I love the relationship between Chloe and Max. Even so, I wonder if this ending means that Chloe will keep on dying and Max will have to keep on saving her forever? Will Chloe stop dying now that they are out of Arcadia Bay?
Like... they could've at least gathered a small handful of people and shoved them in the back of the car lol. I mean I guess that wouldn't make the endings as polarised (hah) as they were clearly meant to be, but I just. I dunno. It seems silly to me that they wouldn't even try. Joyce & David at LEAST. Warren? Kate? Friggin anybody?
Also I've seen a theory post that the body under the sheet at 27:17 is Warren, cause the car looks like his car :( and I forget where you have to be to check it but there's a series of texts from him somewhere (maybe on the cliff with Chloe if there's a time where you can check stuff there????) where he's out looking for Max and then Max tries to text him back and it says like "MESSAGE NOT SENT" or something. Excuse me while I cry a lot.
Max and Chloe have to watch their backs from now on looking for a strange blue phone booth following them, bleh...

i've always been bitter they don't kiss if you save her. the first time i played, i was like: nope, chloe lives. she has to live. don't care about anything or anyone else. bye.
but, tbh, the other ending is better executed, which kinda sucks.

Like y'know when she used Warren's picture to prevent Chloe from going to the party? She asked Chloe to tell future Max that past Max jumped into the photo to alter that moment of time. (Haha, did that make sense?)
+mosesandfriends Max goes back in time and stays in the past, she never travels back again, so the Max we see in the epilogue the same Max that lived 5 days with Chloe and of course she remembers them.
mosesandfriends Basically, she doesn't time travel but actually jumps into alternate universes. She "takes over" the Max from that time and then "jumps back" into herself. So, she keeps all the memories because her own self isn't affected by any of the changes. Hope that makes sense.

I imagine it must have been strange for the voice actress who did Max. Typically when you voice act, you are not acting out with any other actors, you are reading your lines in a sound booth so you often do not have a lot of context. So the scene in the dreamscape where she is forced to fawn over Jefferson and thank him for killing Cloe must have seemed very out of place for her. I can imagine her reading the lines and saying " what the actual fuck? whose lines are these? what? me? how the hell does this fit in???"
Agreed. In general, I do believe voice actors will endure any kind of dialogue in order to produce the intended emotions or ideas from the dialogue. (But just to add a stretched interpretation of mine from the nightmare scenes, I do not think they were purposeless, in fact, i believe they have a lot of purpose esp. before her final decision; she is at her unconcious mind of her own fears and thoughts of other people's thoughts and having to face such. It's just to remind Max of her moments of everyone and seperately Chloe.)
I completely agree about the ending. I would give anything to get one more day with my girlfriend. She passed away a few months ago (having found out from a phone call) - I didn't want to believe it for the longest time. Family didn't help; still lot of homophobia there.
There are many things I regret, the biggest being what I wish I had told her when I still could.
Chloe reminded me of my girlfriend's mannerisms, and the deep friendship she shared with Max was so relatable and uncanny in how similar it was to how my girlfriend and I started as best friends. Even how the character spoke and dressed made me immediately see HER. It's a big reason why this game hit me SO hard, I loved the game but I always dragged my feet coming back to it 'cause I knew how much I'd hurt by the end of each episode.
So thank you, Mari and Stacy, for playing Life is Strange, for sharing the laughs, theories, and even the 'feels'. You two are amazing and I'm glad I stumbled across your channel when I did.

When I first discovered you two (which was when you started playing this game), I was so fascinated by what you said. Your theories had so much time and thought put into them, and it's quite evident in how many different sources you used to back up your theories. You guys have made me rethink how I play games, showing me that there's more to a game than just the game play alone though these theories, especially after #MariWasRight2015 and #StacyWasRight2015. No one's gonna convince me that anyone survived that storm, the whole point of that diner scene was to show that everyone there was going to die if you sacrificed the town. David and (Jefferson determent) are probably the only ones who had a chance.

+wolf night I think you've got it backwards. In the diner, Dream Max criticizes using her powers just to save Chloe, and most of the other people in the diner ask why you let them die. In the friendship trip, it reinforces the relationship between Max and Chloe to make sacrificing her more impactful.

but the diner can sort of make the players feel some sort of remorse for the characters in Arcadia bay, and lead you to want to save them, while the friendship trip brings back all the memories and can make a player recall why Chloe should be saved and why she is so important to Max, but you are right as well in that sense.

Apparently the body you see in the "Sacrifice Bay" ending is Warren because that's his car.
I don't care how one slices it, but a girl who suddenly gets temporal powers & changes a few great, however still overall insignificant things in a small town suddenly creates several odd phenomena all summing up into a storm that gets everyone killed as some falderal consequence.
That crap is getting old. Stop pretending that it isn't cruel to give some one power to change small things that only we would think valuable then pretend that persons wrong for actually doing the right thing & reprimand them with catastrophes they couldn't have possibly given rise to in the wake of their action. /rant
Now that I got that out of the way, as always you girls play & commentate a good show. I found myself making theories along side you only for one of my most cynical to come true. lol

This is the 3rd let's play of LiS I watched, but for me, your content was unrivaled - by far - to *any* let's play I *ever* saw so far (I saw quite a few).
And I think it's because I could relate strongly to the way you reacted, explained your decisions, talked to each other and shared your insight about relationships and issues related to mental health - even the really painful ones you shared from your personal life, which I *greatly* respect. And the way you talked about those issues made real sense to me and felt both caring and healthily protective (e.g. how you adamantly defended Chloe against her abusive stepfather).
I'm going to watch more of your let's plays, but you already made me raise my standards regarding what I'm looking for from content creators.
Oh, and I was repeatedly astounded by your - pretty much pinpoint - ability to predict the game story (in Beyond: Two Souls too!).
Honestly this ending is pretty heartless, imo. When I played, I felt that my Max was given the powers to say goodbye to Chloe and to protect Arcadia Bay. Like she had a duty to solve the mystery and protect the town. I feel like this is the selfish way out. I mean, how can anyone just let a whole town die knowing they could have easily saved it? The people of Arcadia Bay all have memories and people they are fond of just like we loved Chloe. How can a person just end so many lives at once and not regret it? Anyway, those were my reasons for choosing the sacrifice Chloe ending. I loved Arcadia Bay. :'( Without it we wouldn't have even had the time with Chloe in the first place. So those were my reasons for picking the other ending.
Arcadia Bay didn't need Max's power. You can see that in the Sacrifice Chloe ending. If Max doesn't act, Nathan shoots Chloe, gets arrested and confesses to the police. This way Jefferson gets arrested too. This also saves Kate, because the town figures out what happened to her.
So, you could say that she was given the power to say goodbye to Chloe (or to save her and stay with her), but not to protect Arcadia Bay.
