It's an 80s signature song - like Simple Minds "Don't you forget about me".
Hey @leroyrs , agree, this is by FAR an signature song of the 80s and my personal favorite. Just curious, to you thing the "Don't You Forget About Me" is as prominent as it is due to the Breakfast Club? I only ask because during discussion with others, when I have them listen to that side by side with Crowded House "Don't Dream It's Over" most people actually prefer the later. Just wondering your thoughts.
@@willwhitman7534 Sure "The Breakfast Club" made that song iconic. But IMO TFF and Simple Minds share a similiar sound. "Everybody rules the World" and "Alive and Kicking" have a comparable song structure with that positive very melodic upbeat sound.

The only Tune from Jam and Spoon that i knew was "Follow Me", a 12 Minute Trance Classic (@Bisscute: also worth a listen).
For being almost 40 years old, this song is still the epitome of what life was like living in the 80's. I kinda miss it.

At the end of the song, when you said, "Noooooo. Why is it ending? Go back!" -- This is EXACTLY what I always thought whenever this was on the radio when I was growing up.

This song is the quintessential 80’s song. One of the reasons it’s my favorite decade.
They say the song of your life is whatever was #1 when you turned 12 years old. For me "Shout" by this band is the song representing me.

Probably their best song...but not great for radio play back in the day (The beat isn't simple enough) so never got the attention it deserved. Should be part of everyone's music education though.

This song was sung by bass player Curt Smith, and his musical partner is the guitar player, Roland Orzabal, with the two the bandleaders. Roland sings lead about half the time, and they generally always provide backup vocals for each other. Both of them endured very difficult childhoods, resulting in them both being very introverted, and they'd been undergoing Primal Scream Therapy to help break them out of their introverted shells - which is what inspired their song Shout. The band's name, Tears For Fears, was also inspired by their collective therapy and emotional struggles.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World would easily make the list of the Top 20 most important songs of the 1980s, and this monster hit enjoyed 4 or 5 years of hourly rotation on the radio, along with the other smash hit from this album, Shout. A true classic from the best yr of music in the 80's, 1985.
This song is very nostalgic for people who were teenagers in the 80s, it was on the radio constantly for like a year.
Head over Heels is classic as well-
The opening lyrics have always spoken to me..."Welcome to your life. There's no turning back." This song was released just as I was graduating from high school and turning 18 in 1985. The more time that passes, the more thought provoking those lyrics become. It was as if it was a send off to the rest of my adult life. And quickly, the older I got the more I began to realize there truly is no turning back. There are no do-overs. Once that time is gone, it's gone forever. Don't waste it. Make it the most of it. Here I sit, 39 years later with my 57th birthday just a couple of months away wondering where it all went and wishing I could have another chance to get it right.

I was born in 1981 and these 80s songs were playing all through my childhood. I miss that decade. I used to make mix tapes already when I was 5 or 6 years old, and still remember the annoyance when the DJ was talking over the intro of the songs on the radio. 😅

Everybody Wants To Rule The World was released in 1985. None of the band members are related. They are a great band who captured the mood of the time perfectly. You must check out the rest of their music.

One of the best songs of the 80's, I listen to it every time its on any radio station. And as a guitarist the solos in this song are fire.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this before but, this song was used at the end of the movie 'Real Genius' just before the credits roll. A fun little movie to watch with a big bowl of "popcorn" 🍿.

Curt and Roland were friends in England, and this was released around mid 1980s.
Curt (the singer) lives in the US now, and Roland (the guitarist) still lives in the UK, and have recently got together to perform these great bangers.
Another great song from this band, and real favorite of mine, is "Shout".

Roland Orzabal (on guitar) and Curt Smith (on vocals) aren't related but they were childhood friends from Bath, England. They do have somewhat similar voices though, which could be a regional thing.
Both actually share lead vocals pretty evenly throughout their catalogue. Curt is also the band's Bassist.
Certainly check out "Head over heels" which features Roland on lead vocals.

Hi Bisscute, you really should check out the singer with the pony tail and his daughter sing "Pale Shelter" from their home during covid. The singer is older now (and no more pony tail), but still sounding great! And his daughter sounds great too.
And the singer is Curt Smith. My bad, I should have known that.

Had this song on repeat here in Ireland when I was young in the 80s. Utter Classic.
These boys really were very much THE 80S in musical form, they're so great. This was one of THE all-time anthems of the Decade, definitely, every time I hear it it really takes me back to my childhood and a time when the world was ... very different. Sewing the Seeds of Love, Head Over Heels and Shout are the other absolute ESSENTIALS from these guys, and I would also recommend Mad World and Woman In Chains, they're both bangers too.
I lived in SoCal desert all my life. This video was filmed in Cabazon ( the Exxon station was in North Palm Springs). You used to be able to see the gliders being pulled and flying all the time there, now the area is covered with wind turbines and at the West end there is a large Indian casino and hotel. Times change. This was home for me, I miss it now, now in Washington State.

One of my top New Wave songs from the 80s (even as mostly just a metalhead back then) was "Melt With You" by Modern English, you DEFINITELY need to give it a listen, dear.

Some songs like this take me back to a specific time and place when I was in my early '20s. Summertime, playing baseball, trying to impress a girl I had a hard crush for, getting teased by my friends about it. Like having a photograph burned into my memory, this song probably brings many others to a time and place that made them feel good. Even if hearing it for the first time, I hope music brings you to a particular time and place in your memory that is awesome. Love seeing others hear it for the first time too!!!!

I love this song, it takes me back to my disco days, work all day to dance all night!
The vocalist and the guitarists were in another band together. Each was dealing with emotional issues at the time, so they got into Primal Scream Therapy. This led to them forming their then new band, a duo, which they named Tears for Fears. The band name refers to Primal Scream Therapy. The song "Shout" is about said therapy. The guitarist is writing all the songs. Eventually, he began writing most of the songs for himself - a time where and when he started acting as lead vocalist. His partner in the band, plays bass. They are both classically trained musicians. BTW, you should watch and review their music video for "Mad World". The band's guitarist invented a cool dance when they were teens. He performs it in the music video.

This song along with Shout and Head Over Heels were from their more popular phase. Their earlier, more moody phase included gems like Pale Shelter and Mad World. And then later, they evolved with hits like Sowing The Seeds of Love and Woman In Chains
It's not your current year playlist, full of 80s songs. It's John Hughes' playlist, from the 1980s. That one movie director was the biggest hit maker of the 80s. If the song was in a John Hughes teen movie, it was going to sell and get radio play.

This was released in 1985 actually and this is very 80s sounding music ;). Curt Smith (singing here) and Roland Orzabal (guitars and singing more than half of their other songs) are not related but they met during their teen years. This song was on one of the biggest albums of the 80s (Songs from The Big Chair) which also had the other hits "Shout" and "Head Over Heels". They followed it in 89 with "Sowing the Seeds of Love" that, to me was an even better album. They then separated and Roland released two more albums on his own under the Tears for Fears name in the 90s. After being apart for a long time they came back in 2004 then separated again until last year when they released a brand new album (The Tipping Point). All of their albums are truly great. They have that kind of signature sound that, even the new material sounds like classics. They certainly knew how to write hits! This band is worth diving into more. I've seen them 4 or 5 times live, always an amazing concert experience.

Apparently the producers of the US dramedy "Psych!" really liked the band, and Chris Smith appears as himself in several episodes. It's a great series if you can get it in Europe.
