"Don't let them know your next move" Welcome to the weird world of ProgRock! I'm so happy you loved your first Kansas song. Steve Walsh is an angel of a singer. If you want to explore their catalog, I suggest "Song for America". It shows some of their musical virtuosity and lyric-writing prowess.

This is the best song ever written imo. Want a ballad? It's in there. A killer bassline? Ok. A shredding solo or two? Check. Fantastic lyrics? Yup. Harmonies? Ok. Crazy drum fills? Bingo. Keyboards? Another yes. Great vocals? Boom. What else do you want, because it has it all. It's closely followed by Blinded by the Light which you should definitely do if you have a chance.

One of the best progressive rock bands ever with an incredible range. Aileen, when you get a chance now you should listen to their song Dust In The Wind. Musically it is a 180 degree turn from this, but thematically it is very similar. Their lyrics are always worth zeroing in on. I think you will enjoy it. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

Thanks for your quite entertaining reaction to this great tune. _Kansas_ has an entire Universe of great songs that no one (besides true fans) has heard before. Sure everyone knows the 2 great tunes they released on singles --- *_Carry on Wayward Son_* and *_Dust in the Wind_* (which you should listen to next!) but there are many other tremendously inventive and progressive songs. Try the following 11 on for size when you get a chance (listed in order of release) --- and there are many other's --- most of their great material appeared on their first 5 albums released between 1974 and 1977:
    01. Belexes
    02. Child of Innocence
    03. Icarus: Borne on Wings of Steel
    04. The Wall
    05. What's on my Mind
    06. Miracles out of Nowhere
    07. The Spider / Portrait (He Knew) --- _listen to these consecutively as one song._
    08. Closet Chronicles
    09. Sparks of the Tempest
    10. Nobody's Home
    11. Hopelessly Human

Incredibly talented, great lyrics, extraordinary vocals and musicianship. A fusion of rock, classical and supernatural. The story of finding oneself and the troubles of youth, but carry on and triumph young man. Never give up. It's actually a beautiful rock ballad. ...I saw them at Mosport Park at Canada Jam in 1978 as the grand finale as it got dark and people got their lighters out to flash in unison to "Dust in the Wind". Singer was wearing shorts, athletic, and doing energetic moves. It was a glorious surreal time. Lovely organic reaction Aileen. You are fun and would have enjoyed the live performance.

Back when they toured this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago.
They're still played on classic rock radio.
    "Surely Heaven waits for you"
I like watching reviewer's reaction as it keeps getting better.

Kansas, by far, is my favorite band! The guy that has the huge hair is Robbie Steinhardt, he's the violin player and he sings lead on some songs. Steve Walsh-Lead vocals, keyboards, and percussion; Kerry Livgren-guitars, keyboards, and wrote many of their songs; Robbie Steinhardt-violin,lead and backing vocals; Phil Ehart-drums; Rich Williams-guitars; and Dave Hope-bass. Leftoverture from 1976 is my favorite(The Wall, What's On My Mind, Miracles Out Of Nowhere, Cheyenne Anthem, Magnum Opus are amazing songs from this album.) Can I Tell You, Lonely Wind, Song For America, Incomudro-Hymn To The Atman, Icarus Borne On Wings Of Steel, Point Of Know Return, Dust In The Wind, Portrait He Knew, Closet Chronicles, Lighting's Hand, Sparks Of The Tempest, Nobody's Home, People Of The Southwind, Relentless, Hold On, Got To Rock On, Play The Game Tonight, Chasing Shadows, Window's, Crossfire, Fight Fire With Fire, End Of The Age, Incident On A Bridge, Absence Of Presence, Throwing Mountains are all great songs to check out! There are only two of the original members left: Phil Ehart and Rich Williams and Kansas is still touring today! In 1976 I was 11 when i started my Kansas journey and still enjoy their music today; Absence Of Presence is a great album! Thank you for your reaction to my favorite band-Kansas!

Other than some recommendations, that I usually see to Kansas videos, I recommend 2 early epic songs of album #2: Song for America and Lamplight Symphony ... you might need some tissues for the second .. it's such a heart touching song ... these lyrics in combination with the song ... unique 🤘

I had an opportunity to see Kansas when I lived in Japan. They were on a reunion tour and had just released a new album. Great band live! I checked your feed and saw that you had not done a video involving Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Joan Jett is one of the original bad girls of rock and roll! She started as a teenager with her band, The Runaways. After the group broke up, Joan formed her own record label--the first woman artist to form her own label, Blackheart Records--then went solo with her band the Blackhearts. Her biggest hit probably was "I Love Rock and Roll," but had many other hits. I would recommend starting with "I Love Rock and Roll," then move to something like "I Hate Myself for Loving You." The videos for both songs are available on UA-cam.

Good morning Aileen😊 Absolutely fantastic reaction to Kansas' Carry On Wayward Son😊👍 In the 70s it was all about composition and instrumentation... Lyrics and the melody that supported them... The message...that is why the singers sang clear and enunciated their words because they wanted the public to understand what they were saying... They were poets actually in the sense of the ancient minstrels where their words were accompanied by the background music... words first... accompaniment second 😊 yes!!! you are exactly right and your description of the melody... it is a misdirection of movements... you don't know from which direction things are coming and that keeps things exciting and enjoyable 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍

Loved this when the album came out. No matter how many times I listened I could sense something different. The 70's was a time of frustration and emotional discovery in music. POP, Heavy Metal, disco, progressive, punk and many more came in and out of style on the radio and influenced so much. "Dust in the wind" and "He Knew" were very interesting and from the previous album the song "The Pinnacle" seemed to be the step off point for Leftoverture. KANSAS's music was an adventure toward enlightenment but a journey within.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kansas! They’ve been my favorite band for over 20 years and I was lucky enough to catch them live for the first time last month, on their 50th anniversary tour - believe me they’ve still got it so if you can hear them live make a point of doing it!
Anyways my recommendation for your next Kansas song to check out is Icarus.

They were a great live band back in the day. They started out kind of proggy, then they released Left Overture and hit it big.

A few other tracks from Kansas I would recommend: Dust in the Wind, Hold On, and Point of Know Return.
If you like those tracks then I can recommend another band based in Kansas City: Shooting Star. More specifically, the tracks Breakout, Hang On For Your Life, and Last Chance.

Thank you Aileen for reacting to all these classics! Sometimes I want to be like you, not a stunning woman like we know you are, but someone who doesn’t know these songs and get again the feelings we’ve had the first time we’ve listened to them! You’ve got a music lover from France here, who loves to see you discovering the music he’s got running through his veins. Have a great day Aileen!

What an epic song! A true rock gemstone! A perfect storm of passionate vocals, heavy metal guitar riffs and solos, keyboard solo is amazing. Kansas are a truly unique rock band. Of course this song was produced in the 70s. That’s when Rock n Roll reigned.

Think about veterans coming back from war having seen horrific and distubing acts of inhumanity. They suffer, many of them with PTSD. Listen to the tempo changes, the mood it evokes. Anger, horror, hallucinations. dreams of war, sadness, death of women, children. The guilt many feel. Listen to the words now with that in mind. Look them up...." Carry On My Wayward Son, There will peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more". Truly. Go read the lyrics and then let the excellent prog rock move you with these emotions.

Tons of classic rock tracks give me a sense of mysticism and fantasy and this track is one of the most prominent of that kind of vibe, I would love to see this style of rock return to modern music.

Of all of the progressive rock/guitar rock music of the 70's, this song is my all-time favourite. It's rock-y, it's pretty, it's unpredictable and fresh, hook-y as fuck, and in my opinion the best pound for pound/note for note rock song out there.

I am so glad you got to experience Kansas. Easily one of the most talented groups of their time. They were a staple on my cassette deck back and forth to college in the early 80's. I would play this song easily 10 times during the journey, it (and Dust in the Wind) highlight what an incredible rare gift they were! I love how much you truly appreciated them!
