  • In Episode 1 of this series I give you a tour of the 2006 Land Rover LR3 (4.4L V8 Petrol) I bought to refurbish and give to my daughter, Aspen. It has plenty of issues which need to be addressed. We then change the oil, clean the mass airflow sensor, clean the throttle body, and discover a significant coolant leak.

    Love the videos on this LR3. Especially since you make it clear that you're not a mechanic. I think knowing that gives the "everyday person" the confidence to say "hey, I could do that". Also, showing each step is a huge help. I own a 2006 Range Rover Sport which is built on the same Chassis and Drivetrain as the LR3. My RRS has 194K miles, 105K which I put on it in the last 6 years. I live in northern Indiana so working in mine is a bit more challenging with rusted/seized bolts, but it is a great vehicle.

    Oh wow....a week after we bought our 2005 LR3 I stumbled on your series of videos. "The Beast" (named by Mrs. P) has 207000 well maintained miles, but like most 15 to 20 year old vehicles there are some things that need work, mostly cosmetic.
    I'll be working on it over the next few weeks, provided it doesn't get too hot and humid under the carport here in Central Florida.

    Hi Mike. Thanks so much for obsessing over all these things for us. Your channel has been fun and informative to watch.
    I’m looking at picking up a similar car from a private seller this weekend (similar…same car, just a 2005 instead, haha). I wanted to hold off on getting the GAP Tool OBD reader, as it’s expensive, until I had the car in hand.
    Did you find that the BlueDriver (an OBD I already have), gave you a fair bit of information when you picked it up from the seller? I know the GAP Tool is going to be specific to the Land Rover, do way more for you, and that probably will be the way I’ll go if I actually purchase the car, but I’m wondering if the BlueDriver will give me a good sense of “how much work will be” and at least the macro issues of the car from my initial check of the vehicle I’ll be looking at this weekend. Thanks again.

    Hi Mike,
    I'm enjoying your videos and can see the methods you adopt.
    I see your choice of oil in terms of oil change and can, "understand" your decision to stay with the Castrol 5W 30 oil. I live in Africa very close to the equator and for a time, also in South Africa (SA). Here due to the much higher ambient temperatures, similar to what you can achieve in Vegas, many of us run a 5w 40 oil in the LR3 diesels, in my LR3 (D3) Petrol V8, I actually run a minimum of 5W 50 oil. The reason for this is that I run a CTEK Battery sense under the Bonnet (hood as you Americans call it) and in the very hot days, similar to Vegas and being stuck in traffic for long periods of time. I have seen under the Bonnet temperatures of 90 to 95 deg C (194 Deg F / 203 Deg F). This would mean, despite the V8's incredible cooling ability, the engine oil can get very hot and the considered opinion is that a 5W 30 oil is not enough, but, is, generally adequate in Northern Europe.
    Its interesting, that since changing to a Fully Synthetic 5W 50 oil (Mobile 1 or Liqui Moly), not only does the engine run cooler, its actually better on fuel consumption.
    Secondly, in SA, many Land Rover Dealers actually will on the LR3 and LR4 put in the diesels a minimum of 5W 40 and the V8 's 5W 50. Also, I have it on very good authority from a very senior technical member of staff at Land Rover, that changing to a 5W 40 (diesel owners) and 5W 50 (petrol V8 owners) is actually a good thing to do.
    I actually carried out a test whereby, I set in place a temporary oil pressure gauge and checked the oil pressure at idle using the Land Rover recommended Castrol 5W 30 oil when the engine is very hot. At idle, (taking into consideration, there is nothing wrong with my engine bearings, oil pump etc., I saw about 0.8 bar (this was with brand new oil and a Land Rover Oil Filter). I then drained the oil, flushed and installed Liqui Moly fully synthetic 5W 50 oil and again got the engine really hot. In the same conditions as when running the Castrol oil, the oil pressure was 1.6 bar. That is a huge difference!!
    Anyways, just a bit of information for you to consider.
    Also, if you have not already done so, consider installing a new set of iridium NGK spark plugs. You will notice the difference.
    Have fun and enjoy a marvelous car/truck.

    • @wafflesquare
      @wafflesquare  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much for the advice. Our climate here in Las Vegas is nothing like Northern Europe so I will definitely try the 5W-50 on our next oil change. I also plan to change the spark plugs and ignition coils soon. Any recommendations on brand for the coils?

    • @overlandi5056
      @overlandi5056 Рік тому +2

      @@wafflesquare Stay with Denso coils, there is a good reason Land Rover went with them. But NGK Iridium are the best plugs for that engine. Also, the big thermostat housing under the throttle body. They become brittle over time and the mileage your car has done would say, unless it has been changed, it's time to get it done. Finally, the plastic 'Y', 'T' pieces etc. are a plastic/nylon composite, they become brittle and leak at the most inconvenient times. Go to Home Depot or similar and you can get brass, copper ones. I had all stainless steel ones made for me, especially the big 'T' piece to the left of the water pump. If you change all of these, that engine is pretty much bullet proof.

    A friend of mine bought one of those like two years ago and got it for like 6000 really nice truck clean everything and this is like before they start talking about everything especially trucks and SUVs we’re going to skyrocket because of this electric car staying plus everything economy everything she let her husband take it to this local shop and I’ve been told her I said those guys are getting you they would tell her husband they would make up things and he would be like OK just do it just do it and she would tell me what they were doing and my brother owns a shop a big auto shop so like I know the little games mechanics play and how they lie is a tow truck coming also but they literally had to truck there for like a month because he was supposed to be fixing something and then he said there was a bunch other stuff wrong with it and then he’s not gonna charge you for storage and he just was fed up just keep it just keep it I said he seeing how your husband carried his self about when he got things worked on when he would just go there and just be like all just do it just do it I don’t care and he knew he would do that so that’s why he carried you guys like that I didn’t even know until afterwards I said I’ve been telling you stop going to that person I said you don’t never listen to me

    Wow the lady wasn't even maintaining the oil changes !! The simplest and cheapest thing to take care of the car..: ( Oh oh)

      To be fair the oil darkens from the heat of the engine and, therefore, isn’t proof of neglect.

      @@wafflesquare but that looked black : ( That back lift gate
      actuator is a part that is common to fail ours has been replaced twice over 214,000 miles and the only way to open it once it fails is to from the inside pry the carpet open.The owner not doing that job shows lack of wanting to put modest $ into that repair.The two parts required from Atlantic British are $159- $179. There are some regular things to be done the original control arms were not strong enough for the great weight of this car. We changed them then changed them again then
      again but these last ones were with upgraded bearings and those have been in there a long time .
      The proper parts well priced can be had from Atlantic British. Switching to springs from air ride is a real down grade and a mistake if that crosses anyone's mind.The parts for the air ride from AB are reasonable and long life ..good luck

    You must watch LRTime for maintenance and repairs. Also use 5w40 for older engines. 👍🏻🙏🦘
