I really do wonder how certain brands just can't get the basics right, it's like they're actively doing this. Every year they have a meeting going "so what do we need to do to make our cars more unreliable".
I think its planned so they can make continue to generate income from the repairs. If I owned one of these companies I would be embarrassed to have the worst reputation in the industry and would be on a mission to do a 180.
The main reason is that car manufacturers have to keep up with ecological standards and in order to do that, they have to make their engines more difficult in terms of engineering. For example, an old d4 from Toyota was using like 15l/100km and the new engine from jlr inline 4 2.0D has a fuel efficiency of 7L/100 Km. And it all comes down at a cost of reliability. I am pretty sure companies are not fond of having the "Unreliable car" company.
@@ML-jk3sz Exactly. That meeting is more like: "How stupid are our wealthy customers, are they still stupid enough to just keep coughing up whatever we ask, however often they need to pay our exorbitant repair bills even though we should've covered all of it under warranty?"

I’ve not an SUV person, but I can see why people still buy older Rovers. They just look so nice and ride so well. I’m sure buyers think, this is amazing, and then decide to roll the dice, betting the worst won’t happen to them. Anyway, congrats on the Rover, boys! Please keep us updated on how it goes short- and long-term!
Ive owned a 2010 LR4 5.0 V8 for 6 years, replaced the Timing Chain guide rods and it's been running great and an amazing car for us. Taken if off road all over the country and has been super capable. Also a very comfy daily driver or road trip vehicle. It does have its quirks at times but we absolutely love it and hope to keep it forever!
I have one of these, but with the HD package with the rear locking diff. It is a perfect vehicle. I even had the same mouse nest under the bonnet. If you ever need yours fixed, I'll do it. The only thing to worry about is the rear coolant crossover manifold, and any of the Ford accessories (I.e. water pump). Take care of it with 10K km oil changes and it will live forever. People who have problems with these just don't know how to take care of cars.
Okay… I don’t know what’s going on here, but I found a rodent nest in my LR4 engine after I bought it as well. Maybe the insulation is made of biscuits??
I will say I've had my 14 LR4 for many years and 130k+ miles and of the two dozen vehicles I've owned, it has been hands down the most reliable, solid vehicle I've ever owned. It's never left me stranded and has never had a single issue beyond the coolant crossover pipes 50k miles ago and the rotary shift 40k miles ago. I've been very lucky and I still love it so much. I can't imagine ever getting rid of it

I’ll be honest… I have a 2009 LR2 with ~149k miles…haven’t had one issue and have done regular maintenance on it. Changed brakes a while ago, flushed fluids, replaced shocks once. Love it. I also have a 2015 RR sport SE with ~89k miles, had one issue with a coolant hose which was made of plastic so did cost a lot to pull and replace the parts..otherwise it’s been a rockstar.. not sure I’ve ever met anyone who’s had issues with LR but I always see tons of comments about poor quality.. to each their own I guess
We got a new 2016 disco back in 2016 and the interior just started falling apart. And then the fuel pump self destructed and the car locked up on my mother in the middle of an intersection. We sold the car the next day 😂😂

Thank you... For reminding me why my Honda Pilot was such a rewarding, frugal, reliable, worry free decision while I lust for a Land Rover. Every time I think of trading "up" into a Disco etc I come across a story like this....
I drive a 2012 Honda pilot touring with 240,930 miles. It starts every day. I also have been towing a box trailer across the USA 6 times. Blessed it never let me down. I love the Land Rover though, if I could afford one I would give one a shot.
Had a 2019 Passport and it was the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I had a Jeep in the 80’s. The Passport had issue after issue and was at the dealer pretty much monthly. Even when it was running it drove like a tug boat. Never again.
My wife and I owned an LR3, it was a wonderful vehicle. We both loved it tremendously when it wasn't in for repair. It had the V8, and was so smooth and refined. At one point we were given an LR4 with the V6SC as loaner. Compared to the LR3 it was buzzy and uncomfortable. The seats were stiff and the power delivery was frenetic with a lack of low end. I'd love to have another one for an offroad toy, but the gamble is a real deterrent.
Top Gear used those as film cars for many years! Also- the 5.0 V8 didn't just have random timing chain failure, Land Rover was recommending 16,000 miles between oil changes when these were new, lots of owners that stay on top of maintenance are still going strong on original chains
The sensible choices are 3 row 4 runner with a rolled down back window, or a LX with a flip up tailgate. But how will we get entertainment if those are chosen (like the Pilot). Thumbs up for the excellent guilty pleasure of cars. While you are at it, please consider the V10 M5 as a daily :)

I bought a 2016 LR4 last year for $500 with a blown engine and installed a new one. Please make sure all of the plastic coolant pipes under the supercharger are replaced and that the engine cooling fan works. They both fail every 50k and that's how I ended up with my lr4 girl didn't want to pay 22k u.s. for a long block. If u overheat it the engine is done. That engine is the 5.0 bock with 6 cylinder heads. Also you should get solid bushings in the front control arms.
Had a Disco 4, it stranded us on a motorway due to a faulty fuel level sensor. It thought that the tank was empty. It was not. Fantastically expensive to fix. Great video guys. Looking forward to all else this fine piece of British Engineering may surprise you with. 2 vehicles I often consider buying are either the Maserati Ghibli or the LR4 Lux. Both in every video and every owner I have spoken to seem doomed with never ending reliability problems. Really looking forward to see how this LR4 holds up. All the best . Keep the videos coming .
Slowly but steadily Throttle House has become my absolute favourite car show and nowadays even tops GT for me. Thanks for your hard work and this glorious ending to the video 😂
I’ve known three people who purchased new Land Rovers, and all three needed new engines in less than a year of ownership. One had his engine blow driving it home from the dealership after buying it. Amazes me they sell any of them.
FYI, the rotary knob shifter will still twist into gear if it doesn’t pop up. so if that happens to you just twist it in place, it won’t do any damage. Beautiful car great review as always Guys, congrats.👌🙏💯
Great content guys! Well done. All kidding aside about LR reliability reputation, the LR4 is an incredibly versatile and distinctive design. As for the failed water pump, that is perhaps the most common fault on these vehicles (anywhere between 50-80k kms). Once the water pump is repaired the 3.0 V6 SC engine is incredibly reliable from experience (and many others who have chimed in anecdotally on forums). I've been running two of these for a while now with either no or only minor issues. The latter of which I easily (and inexpensively) repaired on my own. The reality is that so many people, including Land Rover owners, love to joke about reliability issues but truth be told, my Land Rovers have been more reliable than the German-made vehicles I've owned (despite being models that were well rated for reliability!)
I really respect and admire you for buying this beutiful but undesirable car by most people, since you are serving us the vicarious pleasure. I hate some car UA-camrs buy BRZ/86/WRX and brag about it. Those might be reasonable and affordable choices, but they don't bring anything fresh or new to the table for viewers. We(viewers) will happily follow your journey to treasure and enjoy the iconic, unreliable masterpiece.
I can't complain because a Land Rover saved my life. I was tapped in a mountain blizzard; we were cold and didn't have any camping gear or even anything to start a fire. Thankfully that trusty Land Rover sensed that and conveniently started an electrical fire. It spread to the supple leather and burned all night, hell it even alerted rescue helicopters to our location. A Toyota Landcruiser wouldn't have done that!
I feel you ! I bought a fully loaded 2016 LR4 Landmark last August (HD pack + adaptive cruise included). I just had to ..there is nothing like it on the road now and JLR messed it up with Discover 5. Rides fantastic ..looks great! Had to get the gear knob shifter replaced 😁. I wouldn’t rev that engine…my heart skipped a beat when you guys were doing it. I am going to get a carplay upgrade soon..to make it ‘modern’.
Honestly I love my LR4 with the 5.0, like they said just knowing you can do stuff is the best part about it. Also i own a 2001 LX470 for the backup cause you know... you never know.
I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments already but the timing chain issues is across the board with pretty much every manufacturer and I say this as a technician that's worked at bmw to audi/vw, mercedes, lexus, infinity, Nissan and now own my own shop. So almost all domestic vehicles have timing chain/guides/vvt issues. But when I was at JLR for the majority of the past 8 years, if you took care of the timing chain guides when you start to hear the noise it never results in the car needing an engine in the future. But since the majority of manufacturers have gone to timing chains and increased oil change intervals we've seen an increase in engine problems. Customers will do what customers do...if you extend oil change intervals...they will always go past that and that's always going to end up with negative results.
Land Rovers are such cool vehicles when they work. I do understand why people buy them. The hot ticket is to buy two, so while one is getting fixed, you can drive the other.... Maybe three, then you would have reliable transportation..... I think i'm gonna stick with my 4 Runner.
Watching them justify their purchase whilst it falls apart in real time is one of the funniest things they have ever done. This was a terrible idea and will not end well.
I spent half the value of my purchase price on repairs for my LR4...but I miss it so much and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hope to be able to get another one in the future.
Also, I have to add... I did take my LR4 off-roading once, went through a river, lots of mud... just because I could. Have I ever been off-roading any other time before or after that? No, never.
Brilliant….love the LR prayer. After a Disco 3 tried to kill me and my family twice (Auto gearbox locked up pulling out from a junction….twice….after LR said it was fixed), I swore never to buy and LR product again….. ….so immediately bought an LR 4…..oh boy! Anyway, around the UK in every town and village you will find self help groups who will offer support and therapy, to help you overcome the PTSD that accompanies owning an LR. How people outside of the UK cope with LR ownership I will never know.
I drove a 5.0 SC up to 236,000 kms in my Jag XKR. You really need to love the car to deal with the massive repairs but it was epic. I sold it and replaced it with a reliable BMW M2 (manual and long beach). 😂. Great vids as always
I have had the SCV6 for more than 6 years and I love it - don't want to sell it. It's comfortable, powerful, competent on-road and off-road and have some features that's still ahead of many current premium cars. The diesels are rubbish but, this engine is magnificent - just look after it!
These guys are my kind of car guys - they appreciate new cars, but seem like regular guys who can't or don't over-spend on cars they own (unlike other car channels - Doug, talking to you).
I was ready to purchase a Discovery, but simply could not break away from getting another LR4 for my road trip vehicle, so here I am watching videos again and shopping for another LR4.
Lol. I like the callback on the thumbnail. Thomas holding a sign saying James is a genius for buying a Century, James holding a sign calling Thomas an idiot for the Land Rover. In all seriousness, the Disco 4 is cool. Not reliable, but cool. My cousin has one (bought second-hand) and recently she had to fork out THOUSANDS after the twin-turbos on the V6 Diesel decided to not be turbos anymore. A week after then new turbos were installed, the car went into Limp Mode and a diagnostic cost another couple of thousand currencies and IT WASN'T EVEN THE ISSUE! But it's a nice car. Nice car...

I think its planned so they can make continue to generate income from the repairs. If I owned one of these companies I would be embarrassed to have the worst reputation in the industry and would be on a mission to do a 180.
They think “They’ve been selling ok for decades, why change now? It would take effort to change.”
You can do that when your brand is just a status symbol. Most original buyers of these have it for two years and then move on to a new one.
The ‘Land Rover’s Prayer’ should come in every JLR handbook; I shall be reciting every time I get into our (now out of warranty 😬) Velar.
Bless you gentlemen. 🙏🏻
I almost died choking on my breakfast hearing that prayer 😅
I spit my coffee💀😂
I bought a 2015 RRS LR494 SDV6 in 2022 March. Dropped the engine once to fix the leaks, changed the transfer case and 3 air suspension struts… but am loving everyday with it
Thomas really wanted one of these since he was looking at them for the ETH episode. Also, I seem to remember Top Gear using these as filming cars in the glory days of Clarkson, Hammond and May. Best of luck gents, you're gonna need it 😂
I tip my cap. Fellow LR4 owner. Love the thing! I put some KM3 mud tires on it because the fuel economy was too good. 🤷🏻♂️
I bought a used Pilot, drove it for 8 years with no major issues. Although the original battery only lasted for 11 years though. I used it to drive my friend to pick up/drop off his LR from the shop soooo many times, lol.
Exactly. 2013 EX-L owner here. Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.

I literally laughed out loud at the prayer segment when the video ended 😂😂😂
You guys kill me! Please give me a job working with you 🙌🏽
Owned a SDV6 Discovery 4 here in the UK for 3 years and never once had an issue with it. Ironically, one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned! Was an absolute dream to drive, and really really miss it! Would buy another one in a heartbeat!
Advise! I have a RR l405 and my backup cam gets foggy too. Take a heat gun or hair dryer. The get condensation inside… heat it up a bit back there and it will get 100% better
just last night I was talking to my wife that this is exactly the LR Discovery 4 I would love to buy! Not anymore...thank you guys! You are the most entertaining couple I know on the tube! Stay healthy and blessings 🙏 ❤ 👍 👏
Got a 2016 landmark edition 1.5 years ago - favorite car I have EVER owned -- this was after a 4 dr wrangler and a GX460 !
Ive owned a 2010 LR4 5.0 V8 for 6 years, replaced the Timing Chain guide rods and it's been running great and an amazing car for us. Taken if off road all over the country and has been super capable. Also a very comfy daily driver or road trip vehicle. It does have its quirks at times but we absolutely love it and hope to keep it forever!
how much do you spend a year to maintain it?
Love how they channel some of the best from old Top Gear. All car fans need you guys!
I can't imagine ever getting rid of it
I wish I had this prayer 3 years ago when purchasing my wife's 2017 Range Rover HSE, at her request. My prayer was not as articulate, but just as fervent. Actually, ownership hasn't been too bad and my wife loves her Aintree green Rover with the same motor (though makes 380 hp in the HSE Big Rover). Happy wife, happy life.
A nod of approval from a fellow 2012 LR4 owner. They are great trucks
We sold the car the next day 😂😂
@@brandonsenker8671 i get it.. weve all had some bad ones..or will eventually.. but for me and my house.. im buying Rovers
The LR2 is basically a Volvo with a Land-Rover developed AWD system. For sheer lack of pedigree and capability, it doesn't have the issues the larger Land Rover products do.
@@kyreerollerson im aware of what the LR2 is however it has the LR badge on it, so folks cant pick and choose their arguments and say "welll its not the same blah blah blah". All im saying is i have a large and a small.. both are superb for me. End of story
@@kyreerollerson kinda true, but I'd say is more of a Ford rather than a Volvo. Which is not very different since at the time Volvo was also owned by Ford. The AWD system also isn't fully made by LR, is mostly a Haldex controlled by LR software, which is a nice combination
After the video, I went directly outside to my garage and knelt by my W212 E Class and said a similar prayer. Good luck gentleman.
Lmao my family has a lemon W212 that somehow, despite having a transmission fault that no one can figure out, has gotten to about 205,000 miles. There is something seriously wrong with it has it vibrates every time you accelerate and shift gear, I pray it doesn't break everytime we drive it lmaoooo
I fell in love with Land Rovers when I was stationed in the UK and worked my way through a couple SIIs, a SWB SIII, a LWB SIII, a couple of FC101s (LHD/RHD), and a 3-door SI Disco V8 with a manual. They were all SOOOO much fun. I would really like to own another one, but pretty much everything they've made since the Disco has turned to hot garbage, including the latest incarnation of the Defender. Every time I have the feeling I should buy another Land Rover, I go to UA-cam and remind myself how bad they've become. It makes me really sad, but it cures my need to own one again. Best of luck with your LR4, Throttle House!! May it not break...too often.
Fantastic episode! Especially after many years of Top Gear where they preferred JLR over any other car, here the guys mentioned the poor reliability etc. as well as the positive aspects.
And god, was I laughing. The prayer was gorgeous!!!
My 2009 Discovery 3, 4.4L V8, has 360,000 km on it and still going strong! Good use, maintenance, original or OEM parts keeps it healthy.

I'd love to see this guys to have own show in some streaming service. Now, when Grand tour is no more, these guys could really be the next generation of car shows. In their episodes, there is great mix of actual car enthusiasm and humor. Think, how funny special episodes there could be!
As an Indian, I would like to have one humble request with regards to the lettering on the bonnet. If possible, would you be so kind as to interchange the first letter of each word and just casually use it? Pretty please.
Thank you... For reminding me why my Honda Pilot was such a rewarding, frugal, reliable, worry free decision while I lust for a Land Rover. Every time I think of trading "up" into a Disco etc I come across a story like this....
Exactly!
I drive a 2012 Honda pilot touring with 240,930 miles. It starts every day. I also have been towing a box trailer across the USA 6 times. Blessed it never let me down. I love the Land Rover though, if I could afford one I would give one a shot.
Let's hear it for the 2nd Gen Pilot community here! Felt personally attacked. Our 2013 EX-L hasn't left us stranded. Ever.
Had a 2019 Passport and it was the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I had a Jeep in the 80’s. The Passport had issue after issue and was at the dealer pretty much monthly. Even when it was running it drove like a tug boat. Never again.
@@du3223A 2019 Passport is not a 2nd Generation Pilot. Two different platforms.
But but but Toyota!!!!
I had an 05 lr3 and it was brilliant. Plows through snow and mud like a boss. I still miss it.
The sensible choice is to buy what you want if you can afford it. People need to quit compromising every facet of life.
That's why I got the lr3 with a 4.4 Jaguar V8. Pretty much the same vehicle with slightly less electronics but still extremely luxurious and capable off-road and much more reliable
So did I but instead bought the RR Sport 2010 with the jaaag 5.0 supercharger extremely reliable btw ford actually copied and with small changes put it on the mustang boss.
@@rafaeloreirorodriguez5278 I thought that that 5.0 was the one with the timing chain issues and the crossover pipe issues just like the LR4 but with the supercharger. Maybe I'm Wrong
Guys let me know if u ever need help with this car for diagnosis repair info. I am a service manager at a Land Rover dealership.
Wow 500? You proper had her pants down. How much was a new engine to you?
The Land Rover prayer you guys came up with at the end should be a mandatory practice for every Land Rover owner anywhere in the world 💯🤣
Had a Disco 4, it stranded us on a motorway due to a faulty fuel level sensor. It thought that the tank was empty. It was not. Fantastically expensive to fix.
Wonderful car to drive; comfortable, quiet, spacious and plush. But hard to resolve the constant knot in the stomach as you wait for the next thing to go wrong.....
How can that leave you stranded? The engine doesn't just switch itself off when fuel gauge reads zero
You guys are raising the bar for car reviews, it's not only about mechanics anymore, but about the fun (or sadness) of ownership. Keep going with the great content!
this guys just pulled a L4 prayer🤣🤣
this thing is maaaad

I bought an even older Land Rover Disco. I absolutely love it. It has had annoying problems but they don’t out weigh how enjoyable it is.
1:30 I almost had a heart attack at the 30k
Great video guys. Looking forward to all else this fine piece of British Engineering may surprise you with. 2 vehicles I often consider buying are either the Maserati Ghibli or the LR4 Lux. Both in every video and every owner I have spoken to seem doomed with never ending reliability problems. Really looking forward to see how this LR4 holds up. All the best . Keep the videos coming .
Dear ThrottleHouse... The check engine light is on to indicate that the check engine light works... Thank you 😂
Slowly but steadily Throttle House has become my absolute favourite car show and nowadays even tops GT for me. Thanks for your hard work and this glorious ending to the video 😂
Amazing show! You’re getting better and better over time! Which unfortunately can’t be said about the Land Rovers…
I’ve known three people who purchased new Land Rovers, and all three needed new engines in less than a year of ownership. One had his engine blow driving it home from the dealership after buying it. Amazes me they sell any of them.
The ending … chefs kiss 👍
am i the only one to think that this car looks insanely good from the front
THAT CONCERNED LOOK ON THOMAS’S FACE WHEN JAMES SAID HE HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 😂 1:01
That prayer at the end was nice. We need it on a T-shirt for purchase please

Hahaha you bought an LR4? I own a 2014 Honda Pilot AWD touring with 140,000 miles and 0 issues. Good luck boys
A Toyota Landcruiser wouldn't have done that!
im so disappointed in you guys for playing with the Lord's Prayer
It was hilarious!
i have a discovery 4 2013, has run 178,000 kms as of now, and it has given us 0 issues until now. it runs the way you look after it.👍
I feel you !
For what it’s worth we actually had a 2016 LR4 and it was vastly more reliable than the newer Land rovers we have.
But think of all the content they will be able to create on their way to financial ruin. Subscribed!
No, never.
The ending prayer was next level.
It’s the “implication.” Very good Dennis reference.
Fantastic, and the snot dripping out of James' nose at the beginning was hysterical. I will add you to my pray list.
It is probably the best colour for it, suits it well. Something to look at as it is being repaired, again.
The next big road trip is realistically gonna be Thomas vs James vs the LR4 on who breaks down first
I drove a 5.0 SC up to 236,000 kms in my Jag XKR.
Nice car...
My understanding is that the later years of the LR3 is the choice as far as Land Rovers go, but if I’m going to get a vehicle like this to strand myself in, I’m looking at getting an R51 Pathfinder.
