Props JLR for 200,000 miles and next to no servicing. Ball joints and bushes has got to be expected from a 2 ton + work horse. Frankly, given the mileage and the kind of life it had i didn't think it was that bad.

Not many JLRs make it to 200,000 miles even with the never ending trips to the dealership and service centre, let alone this one with its scant servicing over its lifetime. Maybe the secret is dont get it serviced, joke obviously. I was thinking 100,000 miles of the 200,00O where for the trips to the garage but no this one was a winner.

£1000 with 10 months ticket? No big problems with it (apart from the grill & stick-on crome 🤢) and could easily be done fairly cheaply, step by step. Your problem is still looking at it as a sales prospect with your perfectionism. A great smoker for the winter keeping your other Range Rovers mollycoddled!

My mate paid £6k a couple of years ago for an 06 plate Disco 3, with 160k miles. Although his is the HSE. So £2k to sort this car, £3k in total, isn't bad really. It's in a tidy state, so I would say it is worth it, especially if you're gonna keep it for a while. Spend the £2k, and get it serviced pronto, and you'll have a decent work horse for a couple of years at least.

So funny Matt. A 200k £1000 LR what did you really expect 😂? Besides your phobia of the ‘chrome’ the LR looks good but as always run on a budget, and could it honestly have passed the very recent MOT with the current mechanical list you have? How much are you prepared to spend for a ‘crew car’? Is it worth sorting the problems instead of purchasing something more expensive and potentially costing more?
Always fun to watch, even when I’m in Mallorca.

  • @Thanos.m
    @Thanos.m 7 місяців тому +5

It's not that bad that MOT fail list is pretty short for the age and mileage I suspected hat this was maintained well up to a point. I think for £1000 you could have done a lot worse. And the fact its made it 200k miles and the engine is still sounding sweet and hasn't snapped a crank I would think it is a good one. Fully understand why you wouldn't trust it though. My personal experience with Land Rover products is higher mileage and good maintenance is better than a car that sat for while its always when they seat that you end up with endless electricall and air suspension faults

My 54reg Disco3 SE has now done 205K probably one of the earliest and I love it for the family, dog, pulling and lugging stuff. Still original apart from chrome mirror covers which i put on as had the passenger mirror knocked off a few years ago, never happened again. Those alloys are not original and most GS models would not have colour painted arches. The SE has a greater level of comfort than the one you have there. I am having constant problems with the air compressor and suspension and only replaced it two years ago. I miss it at the moment as it is waiting for new compressor. Have never put cheap tyres on, always Pirelli Scorpions. I have a large folder of all history with the car so would hopefully meet with your approval, and i service it every year regardless of mileage. That bong towards the end was too familiar to me and knew the problem before you said it!!! If you have a blown rear bulb that could be a reason for a number of faults, I remember my mechanic once first checking the rear lamps when diagnosing any problems as can cause a number of issues.

I rebuilt my pump with a kit, cost about 40 quid and an hours work. If you're handy with spanners and a laptop, and have the enthusiasm then disco 3s are no worse to work on than any other modern car. Problem is people who don't know how or can't do the work themselves have to pay the garage and when the cars get to a certain age it isnt viable. I sold it a few years ago with 150k on the clock with very few issues over the 75k I put on the clock, they just need regular maintenance. I'd buy another tomorrow as long as it had been looked after, they're great car without the stigma of a RR. Sorry Matt, I know you like your Rangie 😅

Had just over 200k miles on it after 4 years, sold it to a farmer to use as a farm hack (as of a few years ago it was still in use). Went for a Disco 4 in 2013 which as of a few years ago was on about 280k and was just as reliable as the 3. My parents had one of these for 12 years that they owned from brand new. It was a 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 S in a very dark blue in 7 seat configuration. It had xenon lights, auto box, heated seats and the upgraded stereo. They never had any major issues with it over 12 years and 70k miles with full LR service history. It was good and solid - even my mom says now she wishes she would’ve kept it because she loved it!

I know you love Land Rovers, but they are very maintenance intensive and expensive to own. There are plenty of non-runners lying in people's yards waiting for fixes that will probably never come. Beautiful styling and interiors, but nightmare mechanical woes. Perhaps it's different in the UK, but specialists in the states are very spendy.

There’s a bit of a car in there somewhere. Everything is bolt on and not massively difficult. Your ARB link are Anti Roll Bar link or rear drop links.
For future reference, LR Centre in Liverpool do a spring conversion kit. £600 plus your chosen garages labour for all 4 struts and the gubbins to make your dashboard shut up. Not bad when you consider the cost and fragility of the air suspension stuff.

I recently bought a 6 year-old SDV8 Range Rover on the back of your enthusiasm and buying advice. Am already so smitten with it that I don’t care if it gives me a load of bother (also managed to get an LR warranty on it as it was in good nick which should hopefully give some air cover). So thanks for that.

I think this Disco 3 is a Real Survivor! , the MOT fail list was remarkable short for a vehicle used as a workhorse for the last 16 years with no significant Service History. Let’s make no mistake the Land Rover Discovery 3 really is a great vehicle which as a result of it’s complexity and fantastic ability requires much more maintenance😢 than a mechanically much simpler Defender or a Toyo 28:34 Land Cruiser which it leaves behind on and sometimes off road (I own a std Def). Unfortunately this level of sophistication and complexity ultimately comes at a cost and requires significantly more maintenance which many second and third owners are not prepared to pay for. If underbody is not corroded and no sign of accident damage I would invest in this vehicle & de-chrome it and fitting sensible standard D3 wheels & tyres. It looks like it has many more years left with some new airbags and some TLC, commercially not feasible but could make sense for a savvy and practical DIY owner.

I had a four year old Disco, same as this with less that 40k on the clock. It started blowing blue/grey smoke. I took it to my local LR expert (a real local expert) who told me, I quote "The only good Land Rover ever made was the old Defender and the EU stopped us making them". The bill for my 'smoke' was £7k. Two new turbochargers and all the associated parts. A month later one of the new turbos went again. Repaired under warranty luckily. I traded it in on a Volvo XC60 and never looked back.

Last month I found a Disco 3 HSE going for scrap. Owner listed it as needing new suspension, Handbrake, etc & was blowing black smoke. I already own an identical car, so I thought for £400, I'd buy and use it for spare parts.
Drove it less than half mile down the road & pulled into a supermaket carpark & had a look under the hood. Turbo hose was not properly connected. Connected it properly - Black smoke gone :).
Next I pulled my Nano-com out and found the suspension/handbrake errors were all pointing to a sticky EGR valve.
Had the car fixed before I got home. She was in near-mint condition.
Sold it last week for £5,500. :)

You have a thing about cheap tyres, I never buy expensive tyres, I always go for a good wet rating but as I don’t drive around like a boy racer, I don’t see the point in paying £150 plus for a tyre when I can get two for the same price 😅
