- After a long storage, Snapper mower model RP21509B wouldn't start.
This video details an on-engine carburetor cleaning. Shown is a Briggs and Stratton engine model 124802-3210-01. - Навчання та стиль
Instructions were perfect to rehabilitate an 18-year-old Briggs and Stratton 6 hp engine that had not been maintained in probably 15 years. Thanks again.
For anyone watching this, if you put the machine on its side with the carburetor facing up, it won't leak gas except for whats in the bowl and it's easier to work on
Do you think he drained the gas first? Didn't mention anything at the beginning.
Thank you, this 56 year old young lady used your video. I had never cleaned carb before. It worked. She is up and running like a charm. I had gas spill like you said. I had already done the air filter & spark plug. So o Reilly and I got carb cleaner. She starts like a pro now.
For those who don't know, a twist tie wire (without the paper/plastic covering) is the perfect size wire to clear out those tiny holes.
Thank you
I used a weed torch to strip my old lawn. Now I think my tiller could use this treatment. Thanks. Time sow grass.
Saved me a trip to find some wire! Used a lighter to strip paper off!
If those tiny holes in the carb bolt get clogged or gummed up, it requires more strain on the lawnmower to start?
Thanks, doing the Snoopy dance. My 25 ton log splitter died in the middle of a job. Cleaned the carb, fresh gas and new plug and no go. Watched this video and rain wire through the feeds on the carb....voila! Purrs like a kitten now. Thanks so much.
Nice Work! Short, and to the point, no B.S., no unnecessary build-up. Thanks!
fabulous video, you made it look do-able even for this 79 year old lady!! Thanx
You saved the day for me! I've been trying to figure out why mine wouldn't start. Followed your steps and now I have a running mower again! Thanks!
Thanks for the info. Mower was down for two years, all better!
Grass must have been pretty long by then? Lol.....
Cool thanks for the vid. I just finished cleaning mine out with spray carb cleaner. I sprayed some of it in my face while cleaning out the holes. I got super lucky. Thank God none of it got in my eyes. I hope it runs tomorrow I’ll test it out with 93 octane. Plus new spark plug. Go baby go!
This is my type of carburettor with the same linkages. I have gained alot from your lecture. More grease to your elbow and more wisdom always.
Thanks for the video, but for anyone reading, first simply try spraying carb cleaner in the air hole behind the air filter. I was about to take it all apart based on this and another video, but tried that first and it was all that was needed. A 15 second fix.
Preventative maintenance is never a bad idea with these machines.
You got the lucky one
While the mower is running or while it's off?
@@Marcoosianism Off, if only because I couldn't get it to run, and hence the need to clean it. Coincidentally... Just encountered similar a few days ago, and later remembered this "fix", but haven't had the chance to try again yet.
THANK YOU! This worked for me. You just saved me a LOOOOOT of labor hours. I have 2 mowers to fix and I'm 50% simply by spraying some of this into the air inlet behind the air filter, worked like a charm. Once I got it started(problem was it wouldn't start/stay running) I sprayed some more in at various angles while running, the motor would kind of choke down but never died and each time roared back to live full throttle! How awesome! I'll follow up if it works on my second mower which is in worse shape but I can get running off of starter fluid, then it dies when the fumes are gone...possibly could be carb or fuel filter. I'll report back. Bless up everyone 🙏
Thanks for the help . Got my mower up and running.
Thank you very much. At 3:58 I could finally see, how my modified Briggs carburetor (made by pre-owner) has to work properly.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, you saved me so much money because I was about to get a whole new carburetor
Very helpful, Thanks. Replacing the small fuel filter, in the fuel line is often forgotten about.
Thanks so much for posting this! Saved me alot of time and money!
This worked for me even though I wasn't able to do the second part to put a needle through the hole that you can see with the air filter removed. I just sprayed some carb cleaner in the general direction for that. It sucked having a full tank of gas to be emptied. I suppose a combination of bad gas and gunk may have been the problem. I also changed the spark plug and air filter for good measure. You saved us so much money we don't even have!
Glad the video helped. The mower in this video was in storage for several years almost guaranteeing a fuel related starting problem.
You have to empty the gas’s first?
General rule of thumb pour out the excess back into your gas can. Then run out any leftovers. Spray with carb cleaner once a season and you are normally fine.
I just fixed my mower!!!! Thank you!!
Nice...I'm doing this right now to my mower, which doesn't start all of the sudden. I used a fuel line clamp before taking my bowl off. One other thing though - no carb cleaner to the inside of the carb unless its running...according to all the various manufacturer directions anyway. Seems to have worked for you though haha!
Fantastic video Thank you so much.. Even tho my briggs and Stratton wasn't the same model there were enough tips to get mine working again.. 👌👌😉
Very good video! Succinct and good visual. Thanks!
Guitar strings are great to run through the tiny channels in carburetors.
good call!!!! I was wondering where to get some wire but I have plenty of guitar strings! and if not you can always restring one of your rigs up and then you get fresh strings and use that excess to clean out your carburetors! I knew I shoulda been saving those scraps all these years 🙏 😂
@@lincolnmicrophonellc 👍🏻👍🏻
Going to try that ASAP because I don't want to take mines apart and your way was super easy., Thanks bro!
Fixed my machine dawg thanks for the help
Great video man. Thanks.
Thanks a million. Got my Snapper back right. I wish I found this chanell before I gave my BillyGoat away
Worked for me, thank you for the video.
Thanks! Great video!
It worked for me ! Thanks a lot
I'm glad I watched this. I was going to take mine off of the motor. I have the Craftsman r110 lawn tractor. I bought it from a friend who let it sit for 1.5 years. The carb solenoid was gummed up, so I know the carb jets are clogged. They make it difficult to get to the carb to take it off. I was wondering if I used a mirror if I could see the jets well enough to run a piece of wire through them. I am going to give this a try.
Maybe. Anyway I like way you think.
Had this problem right after I bought mine, a long time ago, and vaguely remember the tech blowing something out. It set for almost 20 years, unused. A real quick fix. I refuse buy a new one until this old one is DEAD.
Nice video. Thanks!
You had me at carb cleaner... you lost me at bowl nut.
I’ve never used carb cleaner and this video was super helpful. The pressure washer I’m working on has a very similar engine to this.
Much appreciated! Off to store to buy carb cleaner…
Can you spray the carburetor without taking it a part? I read online that you can do that while the machine is running, but no other info on it. It says spray in the center of the carburetor, but that's a bit vague. The center behind the air filter, or on top where those intricate connections are. Any ideas? I already cleaned the fuel cap and that screw a few times and it's not clogged. My problem is, the very first start is very hard to make (15-20 min of trying), but after that, if I stop for 5-10 min, it starts on the first try without any issues. I installed a new air filter, put new gas in it, oil is clean, fuel line is clean, so I can't imagine what's causing this issue, other than carburetor needs cleaning as well.
You know the part where you said i'd rather not take that apart? Yeah i did that. Im trying to get my snowblower ready for winter. Its not getting any gas. When i push the primer if feels like im just pumping air. So i took the whole thing apart. I couldn't get at anything where it was so i took it out. I don't know exactly what im doing. But i think one side or the other that had the fuel lines hooked up to it must have been plugged up with gum or something from the old gas and it wasn't pumping gas through. I hear the ethanol they use nowadays is terrible on small motors. Anyways I took it all a part and cleaned everything with carb cleaner and tried blowing through each side through the nipples where the hoses were hooked up to make sure i could at least get air through. I can but it's not real flowing through super easy. I don't know if that's normal or not. I guess i'll just have to put it back together and see if she'll prime and start.
Thanks for help😊
Wish I had seen this video sooner. I had an ancient mower that I figured needed a new carb but I couldnt find one to fit it. I put it on the curb and 15 minutes later I see two 8 year olds cutting the neighbors grass for money with that mower. 🤣🤣🤣 I respect that hustle though kind of glad I put it out there but mad at myself for not just doing what they just did. I bet they watched your video. And these kids could barely even reach the handle!
Yeah too bad for you, but that story got me started laughing and I'm still laughing. Thanks for sharing!
what size socket did you use? I have a brand new PowerSmart DB2321CR Gas Push Lawn Mower that only runs when I tilt it way up in the air towards me
thank you
It helps to plug the fuel line so you don’t drip
Thank you sir.
When I spray carb cleaner into my carb air inlet, it cuts out? Even a very short spray?
Thanks you thank you thank you!
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video, this worked on my billygoat vac, I used wd40 to clean the carb and after a few attempts to start it ran great. No need to take the carb off the engine. Thanks.
Spray some behind the air filter prior to disassembly. It worked for me, it probably won't work for everyone. Shoutout to @JackJensenTrader in these comments for the idea, it worked like a charm. The carb probably could use removing and full cleaning but to get the yard mowed it saved my life, now the county can stop harassing me about my yard while they neglect the prairie grass that is growing taller than the dumpsters out behind the 4-H building :D
I have a question: at 3:58 at the butterfly valve (top right), there is loop shaped steel bar, which moves the butterfly valve, but the other end goes down somewere under the cover of the motor. Is the other end switching or moveing something?
I can now answer my question: It goes to governor. The higher the speed of the ventillator, the stronger is the pulling force to reduce the carburetor openness.
To make it a little easier to work on get yourself a couple saw horses and a piece of 1/4 inch plywood to set your mower on lot easier on the back.
Except for the lifting part.
I have same motor .I cleaned it thoroughly I took it apart and soaked but will not start with out starting fluid ounce started it runs fine off fuel .
I did everything you did in the video but it runs for a few minutes and dies and it runs on choke very well but doesn't on full any help would be good
Is it possible that there is only one hole instead of 2? I cannot see a second hole under there
Which spray brand are you using?
Carburetors are such a pain in the ass sometimes. Simple and complicated at the same time. Maybe ‘delicate’. If it’s a carburetor where you can pull the brass insert out of the Jets there are pen holes that require running the wire through because if they get clogged you get no gas flow. that’s especially true with pressure washer carbs for some reason
At the time these were manf'd, and currently, can you suggest a better way to accomplish the goal at a similar price? People leave gas in them in storage and the ethanol evaps and you end up with varnish.
Either run them empty before storage, use a stabilizer, or resign yourself to having to do this every so often.
How come this model does not have a primer bulb???
Carburetor cleaned will start with engine start fluid then cuts.....someone suggested cleaning the jet on a bowl, can anyone point me in that direction please
God that linkage was like a Chinese riddle!
He didn’t need to do all that. Remove air filter. Spray carb cleaner in the choke hole, it will fire right back up, 9/10.
Except I have to spray it each and every time I "fire it up." Time to take it apart.
Yeah, another expert to the rescue. I've inherited several mowers and that didn't work on 2 of them. What worked was removing and throwing the carb parts in an ultrasonic cleaner a friend had, and another needed a new carb.
@@csmith1645 NOPE!
Can you post what air filter you used for the replacement? Also the spark plug, if you happen to know that too? Thanks!
Depends on the model of your mower. What is it?
Most common plug for this size engine is the Champion RJ19LM Gap at .030 thousandths. Air filter is Briggs no. 491588S which gives dimensions as Height 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 " long, but length is actually closer to 5 1/8" A little pricey at Home Depot but they stock them.

I think he cleaned dirty one and reused it ?
Hey Original Kens Small Engines is coming on tonight at 9 pm est I’d love to see u there. Kens Small Engines
No spark?
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
I have 2 mowers that I am going to do this to. My only question is, How do we know that mower wasn't able to start. You may have just done some prevent maintenance that made it run better. And did you clean that air filter, it was filthy?
It wouldn't start when I pulled the cord. Yes that air filter was replaced. Good luck with your efforts!
@@TheOriginalMechanic Thanks!!
Well my friend on my first one it worked great. The other is a 3 pump prime but I still pretty much used the same technique. But I'm getting NO fire to start. My wife pulled plug out of the green one which is a Weedeater brand and put it in the first one I fixed and it ran like a champ. So the plug is good but no fire to it. ????? Both are B&S motors.
@@sixstringsinthekeyofblues.3927 You can take the plug out, attach the wire, ground the outer electrode with a wire and watch for spark while you crank. If there is spark the carb may need to come out for more extensive cleaning (or replacement).
@@TheOriginalMechanic Thanks I will do that. Thanks!!
What happens to the mower when you use it and dont clean the carburetor?
The carb gums up and the mower won't run just like in this video.
I do not have gas flowing into the carburetor. I added a fuel shut-off, fuel filter and line but the carburetor is dry with no gas. Any suggestions?? Thanks
Maybe check the float needle and seat and make sure it is not stuck shut.
The Original Mechanic Ok, thanks!
This way is harder takes longer than removing carb and cleaning in the correct way...but it may work.
what carburetor cleaner do you use? What about chlorinated vs non-chlorinated carb cleaners?
Do you wear a mask to protect yourself when using these toxic carb cleaners?
Well ventilated area, stand up wind, hold your breath while spraying directly away from yourself. You'll be fine. The rest is on you as far as your environmental concerns. A citrus based product would work great for breaking down the gum/build up.
It's unbelievable that people throw away a mower when stops working because a dirty carburator. Of course when they take it to repair and labor and storage will cost more than the mower.
What kind of carb cleaner
I used Gumout but any brand would be fine.
Hello What is the name of this spray?
That's just ordinary carb cleaner.
👍👍👍👍👍
What if i just filled iy with gas
Cleaning without dismantling the carburetor is an imitation of cleaning.
Really liked the video for not removing the carb. I did notice however that you seemed to miss the main jet in the screw. From video ua-cam.com/video/ARoojl3LmlM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/yBU86SYFjQE/v-deo.html
Last fall, I had drained the gas from the B&S mower tank and then ran the engine until it won't run anymore pulled the starter rope several times, then put it away for the winter.
Here it is spring, I just checked the oil, looks good, filled with gasoline and was going to start pulling the starter rope and decided to prime it with the primer bulb. Went to the primer bulb and there was a steady stream of gasoline pouring out the little hole in the bulb.
I had to tip the mower over and pour the gasoline into a container. I have never seen that before.
Decided to watch some videos and found yours.
Do you have any idea why the gasoline would just pour out the little hole in the primer bulb.
Do you think I will need to find a carburetor kits somewhere and overhaul the carburetor?
I did take the primer bulb off and it is still pliable and seems ok?
Couple hours later after my first reply.
I did everything you did in your video and went one step further and took the plastic float off and cleaned the needle valve and sprayed cleaner up into that orifice. After cleaning everything you did, put it all back together and it was hard to start, but no leaks out of the primer bulb or anywhere else. It was hard to start at first, but now it starts on the first pull.
Great video and it really helped me out.
Thanks
🎈
"And it's dirty." Why, yes it is
Bro, disconnect the spark plug
why u r not pulling it over
basically soak carb cleaner everywhere. then you'll be good
These lawnmowers are such a pain they always get clogged
I swear I feel for TOM, never seen a channel with so many 'experts' weighing in on this, that and the other thing.
I'd truely love to see any of the bozo's spouting off about how its only a 2 min job to pull the carb and clean it vs doing as shown here.
If u r just cleaning the jet use carb spray and a guitar string.
Thank tou; I did this to my mower to the horror of someone watching. Made me deel pretty insecure about it. Thanks gor the confermation!
It's only 5 bolts...8mm for the 2 and 10mm for the 2 bolts attached to carburetor..TAKE OFF and clean the whole carburetor..jet and all...just my 2 cents
Different strokes for different folks. At least he got it running
I'm always open to suggestions for improvements. Thanks for sharing the tips.
For all y’all don’t waste money on carb cleaner brake clean works just as good for half the price.
Shit I got to try that
Just pull the carb and clean it right !
Using fuel treatment is a must (avoiding is not an option) and buy ethanol free gas too if you can. Also don't use carb cleaner, it's for automotive, lawn mower carbs have more delicate materials inside; use a spray parts cleaner instead.
I never let my gas mower go very long before I clean out the air filter, fins and change the oil. Several times each summer, it's only 18 oz. of oil, takes 5 minutes. Sharpening and balancing the blade is also frequent.
Winter time, mower runs until all gas has been burned out. Its just thinking about the little things and good habits that will keep you from replacing your lawn mower anytime. It should last for many decades.
My gasket disintegrate
Love your channel!! I can barely get around after broken back and a bout with neck cancer. I miss working
Thank you from the UK! The spring from my choke butterfly valve fell off and at last I found how to re-attach via your great video! Cheers! Alistair
Next time or for the new viewers just remove the carburetor out completely to clean it and you will save time 🤦🏻♂️
Wouldn't it be easier to take the carb off and clean it
I looked at all the linkage, springs and levers to remove and decided against it. But yes, it is a more effective way to clean the carb.
You made that so much harder than it is
Dude, seriously it takes less than 2 minutes to pull the carb.
IF you know what you're doing
Was thinking the same then he mentions not wanting to disassemble the linkage. I wouldn't want to either unless I had to. Especially since you might end up having to replace gaskets. This seems to have worked.
Funny all the "experts" on this thread giving this guy some "advice". When THEY actually needed the video themselves in the first place.
@@danielblocker8008 & Doc Z are spot on. Majority of the folks watching this haven't experienced the ball of fun that is simply pulling a carb, disconnecting linkages, and then realizing we now have to run to the parts store and hope we can find a stupid .99 gasket.....
PREFECT VIDEO!!!!!
L
I will never buy liberty insurance!!
Dude you can order the air filter of ebay for next to nothing instead of putting half dirty old one back in !!!!!!!!!!
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F162529514132
I did replace it. I might have been just demonstrating how to take it out and put it back in the part of the video you saw.
he also said he was going to replace it if it the mower worked. .. Also if you have a shop vac you can vacuum out an air cleaner pretty well to be good enough
Fully empty winter gas. Fuel stabiliser is a collosul waste of money. Drain winter oil. Replace with 10/30 conventional. Synthetic not heavy enough.(If you fantasize its carbed up replace gasket). Its child's play. Replace spark plug $5.00. Filter $5.00. I've had my lawnmowers for 10-25 years (Tecumseh, B&S). Last Tecumseh bent shaft so I threw it out - 30 years. I should have put in vise and straightened it, yes straighten it! But wasn't a youtuber then.
It's just general maintenance. I did my brother's 2 years ago and it was a horror show! It's hard to convince him about general msintenance. Don't be shy about carb cleaner or other cleaners on sping settings. I prefer brake cleaner.
Just educate yourself and gave confidence. I used to screw up every day. Still do, but it's part of learning. Work on a junker first UF it makes you feel better.
Any complaints or demurs please let me know. Thanks.
David
David Weum I use Stabil every season and never have problems will the fuel.
I've done that, but did I see you put the old air cleaner back on. Shame on you : )
I didn't have one yet when I shot video of how to find and remove the air cleaner. I replaced it later.
As he said, he’s going to replace the filter if it run after carb cleaning..
PAY ATTENTION. Mind, you're not. the only one who didn't listen.
Jesus, where are all the dopes who didn't hear the OP say he was just going to put it back in to see if he could get it running. Like really, we're to expect all you 'experts' always have a clean air filter in your back pocket.....
Clean the engine before you try to fix it next time...
What was wrong with that mower was on the INSIDE, no amount of aesthetic cleaning could change that "Dr Love" lol. Stick to smokin weed burnout.
@@docz2010 you clean the motor before opening up the carb to prevent all that dirt getting in and creating further blockages
@@johnbrazier7763 Absolutely, thats why small engine repair and auto mechanics always steam clean my engine before working on it..... NOT. I understand the point, however its personal preference. If you're a dingus and can somehow get dirt and debris to fall UP into the bowl/carb after cleaning it, then yes, you probably should be cleaning it before working on it. For the rest of the world who generally manage to do as shown here and get dirty carbs working, I guess its just the rare 95% who are somehow lucky...
This video is very unhelpful and requires too much previous knowledge of engines for the casual watcher
I have a video on carburetor cleaning that shows the process more clearly. It's at: ua-cam.com/video/sE4ZnRiLfLY/v-deo.html
