Plastic Carburetor, Repair It For FREE. Craftsman Push Lawn Mower with Briggs and Stratton Engine

  • Easy Step by Step DIY video with simple detail to repair your Plastic Carburetor For FREE. Craftsman Push Lawn Mower with Briggs and Stratton Engine No Start. We also cover checking fire and what to look for when the coil isn't firing. Always check the choke on the plastic carburetors to make sure it is closed when engine is cold.
The plastic carbs that have a primer ball on the air cleaner operate a little different. If it doesn't push fuel from the bowl into the throat of the carburetor it is probably due to a warped air cleaner base not sealing to the carburetor face. This style primer usually has a hole in the center because it just pushes air into the carb bowl forcing fuel up though the main jet tube into the throat of the carb.
Another quick way to check for fire and compression at the same time is to spray some brake cleaner or carb cleaner into the throat of the carb and try to start. If it runs and dies it is a carburetor or fuel issue even possibly water in the fuel.

I bought my mower, brought it home, put it together, added the oil, poured in some fresh gas from a brand new can, and it started right up, ran well, and I mowed a small patch of grass to see how it cut. Looked good, so, satisfied, I put it in the mower shed ready for work. I had it running for about 10 minutes.
2 weeks later, I pull it out, prime it, then spent the next 45 minutes repeatedly pumping the primer, starting it, and it running 'til the primer gas runs out, then stalling. Shot's of starting fluid/carb cleaner didn't help. I googled the problem, found this vid (along with about a dozen others dealing with this obviously common problem). I took the carb apart and cleaned/unblocked it. Gas looked clean, no dirt/grime in the bowl, filter still looked brand new (because it was). I put it back together, and it ran fine for the hour I used it. Happy with the fix, despite having to do it to a BRAND NEW mower with only 10 minutes of running time, but again, it was fixed . . . The mower only has about 6-8 hours of use on it, and of the dozen times I've used it, it wouldn't start and I've had to take the carb apart and clean it 3 times . . . one time getting lucky and walking away when it wouldn't start again, then coming out the next day to fix it, but tried to start it before going through that PITA, and it stalled out twice, then fired up and ran fine for 45 minutes . . . Today, 2 weeks later, I just spent 1/2-an-hour yanking on it trying to get it to start. I really, REALLY don't feel like having to pull the carb off, pull it apart, clean it, put it back together and installing . . . AGAIN.
Knowing how to fix the carb isn't a solution to the problem when you have to do it nearly every time you use the mower.🤬
Too bad consumers, along with the help of consumer advocate groups, don't pressure Craftsman to come up with a fix . . . like a normal carb replacement, to make up for ripping off their customers.

There is a better faster way to diagnose any and every engine .What you do is before you pick up any tools do a little experiment . Pull the air cleaner cover off and shoot some carb cleaner down the throat . Then pull it over if it runs on the prime then you know Ignition , compression , mechanical and electrical timing are good . If it does not you have the regular testing to do . I call this Prime for a Good Time . This method is quicker no unnecessary testing .

My 2 year old Toro self-propelled mower kept stalling. I replaced air filter, gas cap (no vapor lock), cleaned carb just like you did, cleaned gas tank, replaced gas and spark plug ( it was fouled black sooty). Carb was clean, no dirt no clog.
It still stalled just as bad. Then I tightened the self-propell cable. Now it runs like a demon! No stalling, no carbon fouling. Starts right up.
All because of that cable being a bit slack.

Thanks T Bone. my first experience with a plastic carb. my first impression is "as worthless as t*ts on a man" my Husky went 10 years before developing a surging issue. this thing became problematic the first season. it's on a Briggs EXi 625 Yardforce purchased at sam's. the "just check & add" no oil changes seems laughably counter intuitive.

Nice video. Have the plastic carb with "just pull for power" automatic choke. Will run with a shot of ether or carb cleaner, but will NOT pull fuel on its own. Had carb apart twice and cleaned, able to shoot carb cleaner thru jets, fiel bowl is filling, but it just wont pull its own gas out of the bowl. Never seen something so basic yet I can't find the issue. Seems like it HAS to be clogged jet, yet I can spray cleaner thru the jet and it comes out into the venturi.
ANYONE got an idea what's left to try? I have many old mowers, but this plastic carb OHV is new to me.

Thanks for commenting. Did you take apart the 2 piece jet/emulsion plastic apart like in the video? ALSO did you put o-ring and white plastic holder in carb b4 installation?

@@RaleysSmallEngines I appreciate your response. No , I didn't do those things, and seeing the video, I know what to try next. I have mostly old flatties, so these plastic jobs are new to me. I kind of figured that white emulsion tube thing was pressed in, but I didn't know if it would break if I tried to get it out. I shot cleaner through it and figured that was OK if I saw it squirt into the venturi. So now I'll go for round 3 since I have more info!
Also, the two rings stayed on the engine last time, so I'll put then in the carb first. I had a theory that something was maybe not sealing there, and lack of vacuum might prevent drawing the fuel through the jets. I knew those 2 rings didn't feel right, but I didn't know what was wrong either.
I was not gonna take it apart again until I had something new to go after, so thank you very much for the tips!
These carbs remind me of how Lego parts snap together. Maybe not a bad design once I get used to it.

@@RaleysSmallEngines Well, took it apart again, took apart the emulsion tube, carb cleaner and compressed air in everything, o-ring and retainer snapped into carb, Vaseline on intake spigot, choke closed when cold, and....still NOTHING! Just like before, starts on a shot of carb cleaner, then dies like no fuel. Fuel bowl is filling. Going nuts, as there seems to be no cause. Mower like new and don't want to give up. Any other tricks or ideas? Just get a cheap Amazon carb, even though this one shows no obvious reason?

Thanks you just showed me something that I didn't know on them carbs. I know what the problem is with mine. I didn't know the jets came apart. Mine runs good till it needs more gas. I bet them small holes are stopped up. I enjoy watching your videos.
