Rock Candy Recipe - Crystallization of Sugar - The Sci Guys: Science at Home
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2016
- Welcome to science at home in this experiment we are making rock candy by crystallizing sugar. This is a simple experiment that can be done at home with some water, sugar and a stove. When a supersaturated solution of sugar cools, the sugar in the solution collects together into crystals known as Rock Candy. At the end of this episode you will be able to make your very own Rock Candy, explain what happens during crystallization and explain what a supersaturated solution is.

Equipment/Ingredients needed: 0:42
Sugar
Pot
Tall glass
Clip or clothespin wide enough to cover the top of the glass
Wood skewers or popsicle sticks
(Optional) Flavoring
Directions: 1:11
The first step in our experiment is to make a sugar solution to put on the stove. Add one cup of water to your pot then three cups of sugar, mix them all together until they're thoroughly mixed. Next, take one of your skewers and dip it in some water and then roll it in sugar. Once it's coated set it aside until it's dry. While you wait for your sticks to dry place the pot that contains the solution onto the stove and turn the stove up to high. Continue to stir your solution as it warms up. Once your solution begins to boil stir it rapidly until all the sugar has been mixed into the solution. Once all your sugar is mixed in this is a great time to add any flavoring or coloring. Once you're done mixing in all your sugar colors and flavors remove it from the burner. The next step in our experiment is to take your boiling solution and pour it into the glass in which you're going to grow your crystals. Let the solution cool for 10 minutes and then place the sugar-coated stick into the middle of the glass and hold it in place with the clip. Leave your solution in a warm dry place to cool as it cools crystals will begin to grow on the stick. The process of growing these crystals can take a couple of days up to a couple of weeks. Check crystals daily and make sure that the crystals growing on the stick don't come in contact with any crystals growing on the sides or bottom of the glass. If you notice they're growing close together reposition the stick so it's further away from other crystals. Once your crystals are done growing use a knife to crack the top shell of your solution. Gently remove your crystals from the solution and hang them in a new glass using the clip to hold it in place to drip and dry. Once your crystals have finished dripping and drying you are done!

Thanks
Thanks but I am blind I cant read that.
@@houstonharrell1138 How did you type the comment then?
The way you guys present their material is soo informative and elegant, God bless
Thx needed this for my project

We had fun making the rock candy but just a suggestion, the darker the color the more difficult it is to see the process of the rock candy forming.
This was so helpful! Thank you!!!
we are doing a science fair project and you guys saved us because we didn't have a question until we watched your video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):):):):)
Amazing! Thanks for the explanation
so cool and easy thank you soooo much!!
In this video or in your first experiment, how long did it take before you removed that crystals in the solution? Thank you.
great video!! thanks a lot
Good way of explanation to reason of crystallisation of sucrose🤗
The rock music joke was cringy, but great information. Also, I like your accents. And candy.
lol the rock music thing was really nerdy
😂😂😂
glad someone else felt the cringe 💀
I agree it was very cringe but the video was amazing
@@connectedlifepractices5835 okay but you didn’t have to call him out 😂
Mmmm... delicious chemistry!
Nice experiment
I am going to try
Thank you
mmm can't wait to try this!
Great job! Thanks for sharing your work!
Thank you
Good candy. Yum
0:22 are you experienced?
Yeah
i love this plz make more videos of sci guys and have a good valintines i will leave more post
+Vladmir lenin Thanks!!! You as well.
thanks for the video I was so excited to see the video
+the god of weapons You're very welcome!!
did u add food color to the sugar solution prior to putting your sugar stick in ? thank you
The only thing i need to worry about during the crystalization process:
*ANTS*
Yup.........
l agree with you.......
Soo true
True boiiiiiiii
Even worse: *FLIES*
Fr lol
BIG UPDATE on how to solve the problem, all i needed was a layer aluminum or tin foil. Just pierce it from the bottom of the skewer, cover it and clip it, now the ants can NEVER get to my candy 😂
When I was a kid in the 50’s you could buy the rock candy in a store, plus, my mom taught me how to make the rock candy.
Great video.
now that I can hear what a great vid thanks guys
Thank you guys so much now i got something to so for my science fair❤❤❤😘😘😘😘😘😘😚😚
awesome!!!!!
thank you
Awesome 😎👏🏻🧠
NICE CRYSTALLIZATION OF SUGAR ON ROCK CANDY RECIPE !!!
Great video
Can you put them in the fridge or in just a random place?
How cool does it need to be? What’s the temperature it needs to be below?
Can the boiled sugar solution be reuse?
Hi! Can You Make a video of how to make slime?
Thanks
i have a week to perform the sugar crystal experiment and complete my report. Because i have never done this before, i am not sure how long should i let it crystallize? I need the crystal to grow to a size where i can interpret, compare and discuss my results. I was thinking about 5 days max, although i will have to rush to finish my report.
may you do a video about why do cells divide and all about cell division?
please
from your fan
Hiiii can I ask? For our modules only. How would you know that the crystals are already forming? How do crystals form?
Can we grow them in plastic cups??
me to :) thx for the idea
Wow on 5.1k likes?! This is so underrated!! Also this really helped with my science fair project!!! 😁😊❤️
Is the final product a mechanical mixture or a solution now
Finally a recipe that doesn't require any methylamine
Thank you so much and
I try it and it workwow
how much water , sugar did you use
This is cool
hai, I wanna ask if I use less sugar does the crystel formed faster or slower???
Nice video! 😃😃😃
Hmm.... delicious candy😋
THANK YOU FOR THE HELP NOW MY SCIENCE PROJECT WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!!

Wow I like it ...🤗🤗🤗
How does citric acid affect the crystalization? Would it be like the food colorings you added in this video? Or something completely different?
Sour candies are my favorite :D
i have a tricky one for y'all! i wanna make a solid that will dissolve in water however it needs to be of a softer texture so i can put a hook through it for fishing... What can i make other then gelatin? I wish i knew what fish bites were made out of!
Thanks for your time! i hope yall see this and have a solution for me!
Wait hold up. We need goggles & thermal gloves to... boil water? This has to be a joke right?
Once the sugar is added if it splashes on your hand it can burn. Same as when making candy apples. Believe me this solution splashes on you your gonna wish you had some kind of protection. I remember the paid from the first time it happened to me
hi its my first time watching The Sci Guys me and my mom love you can you make a video on making a pancake challenge plz plz plz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you think you could do this with monkfruit sweetner
Best rock candy
Hello Guys,
how many days does it takes to crystalize the whole process , and do we again have to mix more sugar after we make some sticks out of it . Thx
yum
I love the candy rock it was so good 😍
A point that might have been worth saying is be careful poring the boiling solution in the glass as it may crack or break
I love you guys😏😎😏😎😏😎☺☺☺
Ty
would it still taste like candy without food coloring or flavoring
Yes
Question can you use the same sugar solution to make more
How long should I wait for string to dry
Do we need to refrigerate it
I tried this experiment but my sisters said you are not allowed to eat it since thee has been lots of dust travelling in the air and could've gone inside it.
Suggest me a idea on nucleation..
is this experiment reversible or irreversible?
It's giving sheldon & amy 💛
Man i wish I had no sense of humour so that I can laugh at the joke
Muchas grasis idea it will not melt
ryan is so funny and trysa is so scarry
If we don’t have tol glass how can we make it
hi! i find your videos very helpful especially for a student like me..just wanna ask if you have any simple experiment for Stoichiometry? thanks! :)
+Trisha Holandez We don't have one yet but we would love to create one eventually.
+The Sci Guys thank you! :D your videos really helps a lot.
Can you make a tutorial on a terrarium?
+oaj bidnurkr we will look into it and add it to the list.
Can we wait 3 days?
What if you add baking soda?
We are still waiting for the results ✨
How long does it take to fully dissolve the sugar? and How long do we need to fully dry the coated stick?
Yeah they never told us
Can we eat them
Nice…
Is it edible
in india this are called mishri and u will always get it in hindu temples as parsad (although not in stick form and no added flavour)
We need an idea for a mumps virus model what do you think or what ideas do you The Sci Guys have for us and I think your rock candy experiment was awesome and cool and yummy😀😀😀😀😀😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
+Jaime Bronsztein We aren't sure what you are looking for. Like what the mumps virus looks like under a microscope?
Coool
CAN YOU USE BROWN SUGAR???
is there a problem statement or question if so what is it ?
Yeah it’s called your analysis of the video and pseudo-intelligence. Their were no questions proposed. Onlynbssciebtific theory
would loved if they ate them get that crunch
Organic Chemistry I, *thank you 👩🏽🎓*
jesse we need to make candy meth
I have a question, how many days does it take to grow this?
I left mine for a week and they looked amazing 😊
do they wear eye gear while boiling pasta?😅
Hola
who misses sci guys ✋
What sugar do you need???
