I just had to leave a review after making this last night before I went to bed....I used a .50 walmart cup, bamboo stick and clothes pin/clip. I woke up and came to the kitchen to check it out and OMG, it's the biggest rock candy i've ever seen! AMAzing! thank you!!! This works!!!
If you rotate this string or stick on which you want to crystalize - back and forth, it will make crystals faster and bigger. Reason is that during crystal process, "depleted"water sitting near the crystal, and tend to dissolve it back. By rotating, you moving your crystals through new saturated area, while depleted water (under-saturated) tends to go away.
This worked great for my daughter's last minute science project she came in second place we did four different colors the school loved it! Thanks so much for this video😁

Thank you so much! So many recipes just say to put as much sugar in boiling water as you can, but I've been wondering what candy stage makes the most optimal crystal growth. With this, I saw the sugar crystals I sprinkled in bonding together into little sugar threads within less than 20 minutes.
So recipe is: 4 cups sugar 1 cup water Canning jar Candy thermometer String and bridge Boil to 230F stirring constantly Cool to 220F then add whatever flavorings or colors Pore in jar and attach the string and bridge Wait 4+ hours depending on size? What would happen if I place the jar outside in the cold? Will it crystallize faster? Oh right, the temperatures are 110 down to 104 for countries that weren't first on the moon.
I'm so doing it right now. Thank you very much for this video, I understood most of it (English isn't my mother tongue) and I'm certainly going to rewatch it to understand everything properly. The only problem is that I don't think I have a candy thermometer :"/ Guess I'll have to ask the mighty Amazon. Thanks for putting this on Instructables!

Impressive video. I know a lot of homeschooling moms who will find this useful. I was laughing a bit though, wasn't expecting the nerd's version of how to make rock candy but it's very cool you took time to do all the work.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this demo! I have read the slower it cools the bigger the crystals will be?! Can you do a video and show this process, would you use a heating pad? Or oven? There's not one video I haven't seen on rock candy and I keep coming back to yours! Thanks so much!!!! I would love to see more videos on this and other ways to grow this!!!! Your awesome!!!
Cooling it slower will give you larger crystals because it slowly builds off the existing crystals instead of branching off into many tiny crystals like in this video. I have a sugar solution that had been in the fridge for half a year and it has large blocky crystals.
who are you and... even more important... can you read for me please?? Im having a hard time getting to sleep and your voice is soooo soothing! (the music ruined it a little, but otherwise... perfect to listen to)
Hopefully you got to sleep but you might check out ASMR type videos, people do it live on twitch and I'm sure you could find some here, I'm not really sure how to explain it other than "noises" but I'm sure you could find people just talking/reading.
KarascioM Indeed you can so long as you heat it to the same temp, you should be able to grow new ones without a problem. Though you might have to add more water initially to get the sugar to redissolve.
Your voice is too soothing I had a good nap thank you. Can you write it down for me? How long should I cook the sugar , at what temperature should I stop ? Can I take a stick instead of a string? 👍

Deborah Durham If you would use an ice cube tray to save the extras, I thought of an important tip since my original comment. Make sure the sugar is decently cooled down (basically, the point where it can't cause blisters if touched), else it might negatively affect the plastic. It becomes almost tar or syrup like at that point, but can be pushed into a form (like an ice cube tray) with little effort, just like hot glue or thick dough. Gently greasing the tray with a tiny hint of oil may help in releasing them from the mold.
Okay, QUESTION TIME! Can you take remaining syrup and re-use for another batch? Also, if you had a much taller glass (heat proof) jar, could you make a much longer string of it?
Hello thank you very much for the great video I tried it yesterday but I only used 3 and a half cups of sugar ( I was afraid I would't control the freezing process if I use alot of sugar ) after 4 hours I got nothing on my stick, I was like yeah it probably didnt work.. but today when I woke up, a beautiful rock candy was formed I'm so proud , I'll do it again using different colours

Yes to all, the Left overs can be remelted with some additional water. And these will stay indefinitely without refrigeration needed. So long as they are kept dry and out of a humid environments. Best way to achieve this is to seal them in a bag with food grade desiccant packs. Lastly yes multiples can be made at once, although they may grow at different rates.

Thanks. I tried making and I most likely over heated it NOT a success I later added water to the hard stuff and used in my coffee as it resolved I don't know how it would stick to rubber ice cube trays but wouldn't it be ok to also cool in a Dixie cup then turn upside down to thaw a bit and pop out to go in baked beans or ice tea? Umm depends silicon trays would have no issue but certain rubbers or plastics could melt or lose their shape at these temps. Also are you talking about plastic or wax coated paper dixie cups?

hi there! i love this video and i have a question. will this work if i pour some of the sugar solution into a round mold and grow the crystals there so that it looks like a geode cracked open? thanks in advance!
At least your spoon has a covering, (not bare metal), so I'm sure helped with heat? Might I suggest you or anyone dealing with sugar syrup in any candy making? USE WOOD OR BAMBOO SPOONS 😱 Great video. Thanks!💜
This is helpful!! Only mine clumped up along the sides and got hard right away only on the sides and was really wet and sloppy in the middle and sort of formed a geode. It wasnt the right shade of green after drying which is from the sugar being white. But the result was too soft or too hard? Idk. It's not shiney and very dull.
I started mine yesterday still hasn’t been 24 hrs but nothing has happened . Not sure if I should let them stay longer . I made 24 for my daughters birthday soon
Kimberly Valencia Seems likely you didn't get it a high enough temperature during baking. Either that or have you added anything acidic to try and flavor it?
+5Smarties It's possible that Crystals might of formed on the side of the pot you were making the solution in. Those crystals then could of fallen into said solution and triggered it to start Crystallizing prematurely. That would be my guess.
The way you measured the water and sugar was absolutely fabulous.

Can I use a pipecleaner or stick instead of string? or is the string the best ?
I wouldn't recommend that if you plan to eat it. Best is probably a wood skewer.

If you are not eating it then yes it should be fine, the fuzz will likely help it grow and bite on better.

Could I use this method to make a seed crystal then later on use it to make a large mass of crystal sugar that I could cut?
TheRedKnight Yes to use it for making the seed crystal, but I'm not sure I understand the rest of the question.
What i'm asking is if I could make a large solid crystal of sugar that I could cut and shape like you would a gem?
You technically could, but to get larger crystals it is better to grow them over long periods of time and not really rapidly like I show here.
Okay, thank you
No problem.
When do we put the seed crystal into supersaturated sugar? Will it work if i put it when it is little warm?
I don't understand the question.

Again thanks
Umm depends silicon trays would have no issue but certain rubbers or plastics could melt or lose their shape at these temps. Also are you talking about plastic or wax coated paper dixie cups?
I love how this guy includes kids and talks about safety a lot I am a kid and god no I do not use safety but the idea of the safer procedure in my head helps me a lot I may have been in a couple of phosphorus explosions but I'm fine
Safety is important.
could this be done on a stick or something stronger the string? or is string needed
No, but don't use something like a popsicle stick. The sugar might collapse under own weight
hi there! i love this video and i have a question. will this work if i pour some of the sugar solution into a round mold and grow the crystals there so that it looks like a geode cracked open? thanks in advance!
Aisha Khan, in theory yes. You'll want seed crystals aroun the edges though.
cool. how do you eat it of its on a string?
Do these crystals just melt after??? Please
No they will stay solid, but can be remelted if put in hot water.
I know I’m late but my string keeps going over to the side of the cup. Will this affect growth and if so how do I fix this
would it be okay if i used a smaller ratio of 2 cups of sugar and .5 cup of water?
Scaling Should be okay so long as ratios are kept.
Is it possible to.make without the thermometer or whatever that is?
Kael Black yea. Just bring the water to a simmer.
@@naeelle2116 thanks
can you use the leftover sugar water to make more?
+Luke Yes you can, and if it's hard you can simply add water and rebake.
Thank You!
I made the 6 weeks crystals recipe (first week now). Will try these one! Thanks!
Please let me know how it turna out :)
Nice narration style. Very relaxed.
+Ryan Jensen Well thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed it :)
+TrollFaceTheMan good video, but I thought it would be a troll at first because of our name.
Reasonable assumption :)
But if I used brown sugar, will that another sugar candy experiment success? Thank you.🙏
Brown sugar might work, but I am not sure if it likes to burn at the temperature we would be cooking this at.
this was great for a last day since fair project ty!!!!!
You're welcome :)
This is very cool. You seem to know the science very well
Thank you :)
That is awesome we are going to try this and will let you know how it went. Thanks again.
+Pamela Phillips I hope it goes well!
Life saver cause I had this for my project 😄
At least your spoon has a covering, (not bare metal), so I'm sure helped with heat?
Might I suggest you or anyone dealing with sugar syrup in any candy making?
USE WOOD OR BAMBOO SPOONS 😱
Great video.
Did you ever figure it out?
I started mine yesterday still hasn’t been 24 hrs but nothing has happened . Not sure if I should let them stay longer . I made 24 for my daughters birthday soon
Kimberly Valencia Seems likely you didn't get it a high enough temperature during baking. Either that or have you added anything acidic to try and flavor it?
What is the temperature of syrup stage? 240 or 250 degrees fahrenheit. Later you say to cool it down to 220 degrees. Please help.
dude in vid he says 230°F and it even says so on screen.......
I was trying to help my son but it started to crystallize on the side of the quart jar before it was even an hour yet. what do you think went wrong?
+5Smarties It's possible that Crystals might of formed on the side of the pot you were making the solution in. Those crystals then could of fallen into said solution and triggered it to start Crystallizing prematurely.
That would be my guess.
do i have to let it cool down before i put it in the jar or do i put it while its hot?
Y DID I FALL ASLEEP WHILE LISTENING ?? 😩🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
🤣🤣🤣
