  • Welcome to science at home in this experiment we create sugar glass and explain the chemistry behind the different ingredients that are used to make the sugar glass and why the temperature of the solution is so important. Sugar glass is a fun experiment to do at home with kids and you can create all kinds of interesting sugar glass creations. We made a holiday sugar glass house for Christmas. At the end of this episode you will be able to explain what sugar glass is, why each ingredient is needed and be able to make sugar glass at home.

Thank you for the detailed description and animation of HOW the cream of tartar and corn syrup prevent crystallization!
Every other blog or recipe site just tells me that they *do*, or at the *most* they'll say, "because cream of tartar is an acid" or "because corn syrup is already broken into glucose and fructose"....
so thanks for explaining, and I LOVE the all-glass house!

How to store sugar glass so to prevent it from melting? I’m planning to place it on a cake for next day event. One last question- how do you shape or cut the sugar glass to attain what size or shape you needed?

What happens if you put the solid sugar glass into water ? Does it melt or does it stay solid ?

+Himanshu More yes we can! We're already getting the episode ready. If all goes well it should be the second episode of the new season.

Is it possible to take the sugar glass before it cools completely and bend it? I want to make a curved window for my gingerbread house and thought I could drape the glass over a rounded mold before it cooled competely. If I make the glass 1/4 inche thick, how long will it take to harden completely? Thanks!

I wonder if there's any other place to pour the liquid sugar so the glass would be completely smooth and not rugged. Anyway, I didn't know any of the chemical part, amazing job!

If you use cooking spray instead of aluminium foil you can get it smoother but it can be hard to get the glass out of the tray.

+The Sci Guys That would require some practice but the glass would be really smooth

Also another alternative would be silicone molds.

Try using baking paper instead of aluminium foil.
