Ohhhh, this takes me back...my mom and I used to make rock candy all the time as a kid, I was always fascinated watching the crystals form slowly out of nothing!
Omg thank you for this video. I had this field trip yrs ago in school that took us to back in the day village kinda town set up...they showed us rock candy and how to make it. Yet this step was never included in any of the techniques given to me in school and I never knew why I couldn't get it to grow. Thank you. All steps had everything from dunking repeatedly until it started to grow to keeping it in the dark covered up. This makes a lot more sense.
That katniss cake in the background likes AWESOME- and these rock candies also look out of this world! I bet they would go great as kryptonite for a superman themed dessert!
I think you can. I saw a recipie that said you can rebook the liquid and add more sugar if it does not work out the first time. I moved mine around and added extra later so I might have to redo it, cause it was starting to set till I messed around with it.
she said leave the candy to sit for 2-3 days everyone. stop freaking out thinking it has to be 2 weeks. she only left hers for a few weeks, you don't have to do that ofc. edit: 4:32

I made the rock candy a couple of seconds ago and when I poured it into the cup the liquid was really thick and opaque but here it is really transparent and thin any answers to why? Thanks lots of love!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you just like I remember. It has been years and I wanted to remember and make sure I was doing it right. I would do it with aluminum foil. But this is great 😎🥳
When you said days, I thought I heard wrong xD wow I didn't know rock candy was 'grown'. This is pretty cool! It's something you can do with your kids! Instead of growing plants, they can grow something sweet that they like to eat!
Yep. I'm not sure if I'm exactly correct on this, but rock candy actually uses a thing that chemists call "crystallization." Basically, when you increase the temperature of water, it increases the solubility of the water, allowing more sugar to be added. However, when it cools, the solubility of the water decreases, and so some sugar molecules cannot remain mixed with the water molecules, and they separate. This separation causes the sugar molecules to "crystalize" and stick to the surface of the stick. So that's why it has to be grown.
Thank you for this!!! My kids and I have been talking about this for a while now and want to make them. We did this in the 6th or 7th grade and it was so much fun.
I work with kids, and I'm wondering; what's a good way to keep dust from gathering on the tops of the glasses, if you're waiting a few weeks(we have problems with dust sometimes)
melly kidd I would gently cover around the top with plastic wrap, letting it drape down the sides a bit. After the containers cool first of course. I would think that should keep dust out.
When I did it a while back, I knew I would need something to hold me over. I had several glasses and made about 12 rock candies. I ate one every couple days and it was fun to watch them grow, the longer you leave them, the bigger they'll grow!
Perfect! I’m trying to learn some new candies to make for Easter this year. I’m going to try this. Thank you for teaching me something new! I make cooking videos too! It’s a pleasure to learn from other talented creators like you! I hope we can learn more from each other!

Raquel Miranda If you want it to grow bigger you just boil another batch of sugar solution above and place your already made rock sugar stick in a bigger cup. I'm gonna make mine the size of my fist!

Well, since it's pure sugar basically and sugar is a crystal, is will crystallize.
