      This reply might be 8 years too late but maybe you could try straining the first solution into a different jar. There may have been alum powder left in the jar. Or maybe it's the type of glass you used??

      Also you can put a towel around the jar so it cools slowly and put a piece of cardboard on top so dust doesn't get in it.

    @the sci guys so if you held the water at say, 50c instead of room temp, would you increase or decrease the speed at which they grow, or would the oly affect be the final size of the crystals grown
    also is there any difference with how over saturated your solution is, as i seemed to only have small tiny crystal form on the bottle as a precpritate rather than nice growth,

    • @ryanchamberlain7118

      +Iris The Yveltal it can take up to 24 hours for the crystals to grow. Also you may need to mix additional alum in as it may not be saturated enough.

      Granulated alum should work just fine. Just make sure you mix it a lot so as much of the alum as possible gets dissolved in the hot water.

    I am trying to do this experiment, but it is taking oh so long for any crystal to grow :( I'm losing hope and feel like dumping it all. I made a solution on a Thursday afternoon and it is now Saturday morning and there's nothing. I'm doing all I'm told to. There is some Alum In my glass when I even pour it out.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  9 років тому

      Makenna cx You may need to add a lot more Alum. Did you do the experiment with very hot water and then mix in as much alum as you could? Hot water will have a much higher solubility when compared to cooler or room temperature water.

    Alice L This is a reply to Alice L, because apparently the comments section won't let me reply to comments on some of our older videos. The best way to tie the string on the craft stick is to wrap the fishing line around the stick multiple times, I think we did between 5-7, then run the line under the loops starting from your first loop and going in the direction of your last, and then try and tie a knot. Let me know if that works, If you continue to have issues message us on Facebook and we can discuss.

      @TheAmethystStar101 10 років тому

      I am doing this for my science experiment but it's a little bit different. I am testing how they grow on household items (the rate of it to be exact). So, after doing that (tieing the strings around the craft stick), how low or high would you suggest the items to be at? It's with 400mL water in a 600mL beaker. Also, the strings...does it have to be fishing lines? I couldn't find any in stores so I just used strings from a craft store. Will the strings have an impact on the outcome of the crystals?
      I'm planning on re-doing the experiment.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 років тому

      The Amethyst Star We suggest using line like fishing line because there are no little bumps or cracks that crystals can grow on. Fishing line is smooth and crystals will not grow on it and will only grow on your crystal. I think thread will also work, you may need to double it up if the crystal gets heavy. You can try using normal string and if crystals grown on it you can always heat the water, and stir the crystals back into the water to restart the experiment. As for how high, I found that I had to adjust it after about 12 hours if the crystal was growing too close to the bottom or to high. We hung it at about the middle of the water depth, you could always go a little higher than that. Also remember you can adjust the string halfway through if it is getting too close to the bottom. We would be very interested to see your crystals when they are done. If you feel like sharing them with us, facebook us the image so we can check it out. Let us know if you have any other questions.

    • @TheAmethystStar101
      @TheAmethystStar101 10 років тому

      I don't really know where to get it and I don't exactly have a long time to experiment. Also, I noticed that the crystals have been growing on the surface of the bottom of the beaker, not on the items I had put in the solution. I am not really sure what to do since the whole point of the experiment is to see its growth on the items. By stirring, would it possibly gather around the item that I have inserted to hang in the middle? I'm worried about the experiment not being completed if I were to re-start it, since I have less than a week. I was thinking of keeping with the one I have but the problem is, I haven't been measuring the growth. I just wanted to see the growth by following the formula (and to see if it actually works) so that next time, there wouldn't be any surprises.

    • @TheSciGuys
      @TheSciGuys  10 років тому

      The Amethyst Star If you take some of the small seed crystals and tie them to your items then the crystals will grow from the seed crystals. Depending on what items you are using you may need to scratch them up or make bumps and grooves in them to make the crystals start growing on them. This can be accomplished by possibly using iron wool too scratch off a smooth finish, or to chip or dent the items. Another things that may work is scattering some alum on the items. If some alum powder is poured on the items, and it stays on the item while in the water, then the crystals should grow where the alum powder is scattered. Try that out and let us know if it helps.
