Join me as I fly with Delta Air Lines First Class on a 757-300 from Atlanta to Salt Lake City. I’m in seat 2A on the “Flying Pencil,” the world’s longest single aisle, twinjet exploring what 2020 has done to Delta Airlines First Class.
We’ll use the JebScore methodology to explore every aspect of Delta Air Lines First Class. We’ll look at lounge access (Spoiler alert…there is none), the seat, the inflight entertainment, the food, and the service all in order to answer the question: “Does it make sense to fly Delta Airlines First Class in 2020 (and beyond)…
At the risk of stating the obvious: Delta Air Lines sell more economy tickets than first class tickets. But, perhaps you’re thinking about booking First Class? In this video, I’m going to aim to help you decide whether it makes sense for you to pay to upgrade with Delta Airlines in this brave new world. After watching, let me know whether you see enough value to pay a premium.
Delta Air Lines First Class is dramatically different today than it was this time last year. The experience has taken a downturn as Delta Airlines does its best to save money and reduce risks.

Jeb, I will say Delta's reduced offerings and blocking middle seat is a strategic move to get people comfortable with flying again. That way Delta can bounce back quicker than AA or UAL when this passes.

My favorite part of flying is the take off roll. That initial crawl, the exponential speed gain, the moments of weightlessness as the plane lifts off the ground...then the realization that you, a human being with arms instead of wings, are in the air, flying at speeds no other animal will ever achieve...

This is just for short haul American routes. Think of it like inter-EU European flights. When compared to those (which are just economy seats with the middle one portioned off and no more leg room) these seats are very nice! No where near Lufthansa’s or Emirates’ international first class, but for a 3 hour jet across the country, they’re very nice!

Let me start by saying I LOVE 'TRADITIONAL' FIRST CLASS! .....but, during these coronavirus times, it's no longer worth it. Of course, I found this out the hard way. I paid $1300 for a flight from NY to LAX - and when I was served a box, that included a stick of beef jerky and some chips, I was livid. Based on this video, I have to counter with the question; Service?! There is no service. To be seated in the First Class Cabin all you're going to receive is an attendant who is going to give you a plastic bag, filled with 'snack food' and a Wet Wipe?! That's not service.

Now that route no longer exists. I took a chance last month and took a UA crj 550 out of DCA to EWR in first, 35 minute flight. Then I continued to SFO in Polaris. Two agrees: 1) I love when the pilots do what I call a "turn and burn"...as they turn onto the takeoff runway, they spool the engines up to takeoff thrust without stopping. 2) I enjoy a little turbulence during a flight. Makes it more interesting.

    You're not crazy at all.
When the plane turns onto the runway for departure is an awesome moment.
Me being a speed junkie, the acceleration up to take off is awesome as well. That force of being pushed back in your seat and getting up to speed is an incredible feeling as well.

One of my favorite flights was on a Delta 757 from Mpls/SP MSP to Fairbanks FAI. While sitting on the right side of the aircraft I enjoyed seeing the sun rise in the west. It was on June 19, 2013 the five hour flight took off at 10:30 pm CDT from MSP into the twilight. As the flight progressed north and west, the sky kept getting brighter until over the Yukon Territories the sun rose in the west. Upon landing in Fairbanks at 12:30 am HADT, the sun was above the horizon.

I LOVE this video! Not very many big travel UA-camrs do 757-300 reviews. The 757-300 is my favorite plane because I flew it with my family for a vacation to Fort Myers Florida in February 2019. I love flying, but I don’t often get to do it. My last flight was my return from Florida and before then, I hadn’t flown in 10 years! But my Florida trip and the 757-300 have a special place in my life. I even have a small 1:400 scale model of a Delta 757-300 on display. Love the fact that you did a video with my favorite plane! I flew this route from Atlanta to Salt Lake in January and our decent into SLC was the most turbulent I have ever experienced in my entire life. Being on a 757 I couldn't imagine what that turbulence from that flight would be like in a smaller plane. Turbulence going into SLC is not uncommon, however, due to the altitude and the mountains. I have also experienced turbulence before coming from the west coast. Been a fan of your channel for a while. Keep up the good work! Hope you get to showcase the new SLC terminal on your way out! Safe travels from SLC!

I have since moved onto a different role and not sure when I will be back. Fun to see the approach from the south. Every single flight approached from the north. And every departure a few days later was to the north. I always when possible flew the 757-200 . 15A is a nice seat if you like leg room. Though it is comfort+.

    Exactly as you stated.
I almost always fly AA and there are a few differences. First, they do not restrict someone sitting next to you. Sometimes they offer a drink before takeoff. Sometimes not. Once in the air, you can get any beverage you want. Water, soda, alcohol, Etc.
A negative is that their entertainment only comes on once at cruising altitude and movies are not updated often. They do offer a sandwich pack or cheese plate on flights over a certain distance. Same as that box you received.
Still fun to travel. As with you the best part id the part between the turn onto the runway and she you feel full throttle.

When it's your turn on the runway it's always a higher heart rate for me. Excited its time to fly. Last ride on a 757 with Delta was 1994. I also got a L1011 from Orlando to Atlanta. When was touring the USA from down under. Cheers.

Just booked Baltimore to Honolulu with a stop in Minneapolis on Delta and upgraded to 1st Class for the Baltimore to Minneapolis leg through the app for $100. After I factored in the free bags, this seemed like a good deal to me. Being new to the 1st class cabin, your video explained almost every question I had. Thanks. BONUS - I just checked and Baltimore to Minneapolis is 909 miles, so we should get the big box of snacks.

I just took a Delta flight and first class was treated the same as the rest of the plane, I then took Alaska and first class was treated better with first class getting drink choices before departure.

Exactly my comment above lol, it’s all sounds a bit pretentious to fly first class at the moment ! I’m sure his flight was heavily subsidized in any case and it wasn’t out of the Jeb family funds ! Thanks for the video thought as a former Flight attendant with Caledonian Airways, remember us?? We used to wear the kilt and the tartan jacket, I too always felt the excitement of every take off and landing!

I have flow 15 times with Delta this year, out of SLC what Includes retirement of a 777 nowhere flight.
In April 2020 flight had six passengers from DCA-MSP. The most recent September 2020 764 SLC-ATL had 122 passengers and it was a weekend flight.

I recently took a 757-300 from Detroit to Orlando and I hadn’t been on a plane in a couple years, I love aviation so much and as we took off, I cried a bit because I haven’t experienced take off in forever. This is the reason why I came to this video. My stepdad said we should bump up to first class but I had to say if we ever do do first class, we should do it on a plane that has more room like a 767, 787, or possibly a 777. In my opinion, I would think the first class on the 757 would be little tighter than usual, first class wasn’t what it used to be all those years ago but the service in my opinion is nice.

Being in Economy or Economy Plus will always work better for us. Unless you have a bunch of points saved up through Frequent Flyer under any airline you fly with. They'll upgrade you if any empty seats before paging your zone onto the plane, or you can use your saved points for it. I love being in Economy if there are only two people sitting in 3 rows of seating to give you extra room to stretch and put your stuff in the middle seat shared with the other person. Plus, as a nice convivence. If you tell the flight attendants you have a flight that leaves from a gate real quickly in a short layover prior to when you land. They'll inform everyone on the plane to make room and let you get through. Even if you are in the back seats of the plane. It's a win-win.

Great video Jeb. Food is VERY important to me on a flight. So I despise those snack boxes.
But you really hit the nail on the head mentioning the miracle of getting on and then getting off in a brand new location. There is a feeling of great wonder for me. I too enjoy when the plane lines up on the runway ready to do the full throttle and off you go, into the wild blue yonder.
Would love to see a comparison of United and American Business Class service.....maybe to Hawaii since it's such a long flight. I would like to see what their snack boxes are on Hawaii flights.

Prior to the Covid madness, I would fly 3 or 4 times a year. I've had a Delta Skymiles card since 2015 or so and would typically use miles to upgrade to first class. I found that to be a pretty good deal for me. I've made one round trip flight this year on Delta and chose to upgrade only to Delta Comfort as the food and beverage options were the same. Delta's seat blocking policy also weighed on that choice as well. When life (and flying) returns to what it was a year ago, I will probably return to first class seating. Thanks for all you do in sharing your flying experiences with the world. Cheers.

My first flight was in 1982 and I was 3. I've been fascinated with flight ever since. From a very early age I wanted to know what type of plane we were flying on and if I found out it was a widebody, I'd be over the moon excited. Admittedly, the 757 wasn't my favorite plane but it has grown on me a lot over the years. It's a pilot's plane, often called the "hotrod" and it's proving to be very relevant in this time where reduced capacity medium to long range international flights are needed. So yes that turn onto the runway and spooling up of the engines gets me every single time. I may not fly as much as you, but I've flown plenty. It never gets old. Amenities are nice but I've never come to expect much from US domestic first class even in the good years. I expect a lot more on international business and first.
My big complaint is how dairy-happy flights are. Dairy put me in the ER a few years back and it seems I can never avoid it on flights. If they can put milk, butter and/or cheese in something, they almost always do which really limits my experience -- even in the good years. I ordered a dairy-free meal on AA international business and it was not good at all. Forget about deserts. Sadly (cheese being the exception) it's so easy to make anything good without dairy, even ice-cream -- so it's really reduced me love for the upper classes, especially domestic. TMI!

The no hot food and pre wrapped food from what I understand is to help reduce the spread of the virus. Just this time last year the lounges were serving hot food and I could just ask one of the workers and they would grab me whatever I wanted. Granted I'm disabled and so the workers usually just came and asked me what they could get for me to make things easier than trying to work my way through the crowded lounges. I was actually surprised just how crowded the lounges were. I thought they'd be fairly empty.

I just flew Delta a couple weeks ago from CVG to Tampa and I loved it. I set in Economy+ on the way down (free upgrade cause there were only 11 people on the flight) n Economy on the way back to CVG n it was a pretty full flight, as full as a flight can be with the middle seat 💺 blocked. I thought for a short 2hr flight it was great, both Economy n Economy Plus were very nice. The staff was very friendly and over all it was a great flight. IDK what ✈ I was on, 3 3 in Economy so it was a bigger ✈, maybe a 747 or 78 something, I thought for a short flight it was huge, but it is a tourist flight. Over all I like Delta and I'll fly them again. Better then Frontier and Allegiant pretty much the only other 2 options to Florida from CVG.

Good to see you in your native environment Jeb, the DL 757. I hold a similar opinion to your question, I would be totally fine with C+ or Econ and a blocked middle seat, but the fare differences are so small right now, I tend to spend the extra for first, even with the limited benefits.

The last time I flew Delta was in August 2018 LAX-KOA round trip, economy comfort. Both legs were on geriatric 757-200s that were so old they needed a cane to move down the taxiway (both frames were over 30 years old), the IFE monitor in 2 of our 4 seats didn't work on the outbound leg, the buy-on-board food was terrible and the flight attendants all acted like they wished they were somewhere else.

I’ve flown a few times during the pandemic, once internationally and several times domestically. I booked first/business class seats for all those trips JUST because since airlines blocked off seats to reduce capacity, fewer people would fit on the planes and because I booked a seat in a premium cabin I had a row to myself and was able to distance myself from others. The guaranteed personal row made the ticket cost 100% worth it.

I had that same seat on 757-300 BOS-LAX a few months ago. The seats and pitch were not that noteworthy. With the restrictions, I didn't find the extra $400 worth it. I would probably go for Comfort+ instead of "first class". Great to have your reviews again!

Flying First class with delta in June from Hawaii to Japan. I have 5 kiddos coming. all 10 and under. Cant wait to see their faces when we all take our seats. We did this because the seats lay flat. First time doing Delta one, hoping for a great experience during the COVID times.

im a delta pm and i flew 2x in the past 3 weeks on the LAX-SLC route. Its a short flight and on both trips I was on First out, Comfort on the return. First definitely isnt worth the price difference right now IMO, mainly for the simple reason the middle seat is empty on economy. Lift the armrest and u good. The drink service is next to nil on both first/economy too. Wont hesitate to get the cheapest unassigned seat for the remainder of the year.
