  • You won’t find a more controversial difference within the same aircraft product line than with the Boeing 757-200 and Boeing 757-300. Why is one loved and the other hated? Is it because the Boeing 757-300 is just too long? Let’s find out.

    I’m a coordinator. I work at United Airlines, we usually work on the 757-200, until a week ago. I had to service one. But this one was particular, it was longer, and it seemed like it took forever to walk down the aisle. At that moment, I realized that this particular aircraft was the 757-300. I was so amused, it looks like a flying pencil😃😃🙆🏽‍♂️

    As far as the 757-300, I've got nearly 1,100 hours of pilot in command time on this version of the 757. The other 7,679 hours of 757 time were flying the -200 over the course of a ten year period. I have to say, both are wonderful airplanes and as far as the length, it's really hard to distinguish between the two in terms of flight characteristics. When the -300 is heavy, it doesn't have quite the climb performance as the -200, but once level at cruise altitude, mostly indistinguishable. Now in turbulence, the -300 is nicer, no doubt about it. It just seems to take it better; it's more flexible. Also, in a crosswind landing, the -300 is very nice because the rudder is so far back there, it seems quite a bit easier to de-crab; there's just less pedal effort to produce the desired yawing movement. I almost forgot, there's some avionics and cockpit creature comforts I liked better than the -200s that might seem trivial to some people, but I liked them. As far as how the folks in the back liked it, well, I hope they do, but lot of that depends on how nice the flight attendants are, the service, the food, if you're on time, etc. Whether it's good or whether it's bad, well, that can go a long way towards the overall experience to the point that their not really thinking about the length of the airplane anymore.

    The 757 is a great airplane. Every time I've flown on one, it seems it has a gentle take-off without a scary vertical, hold-onto-your hats, feeling. It's just a nice
    lift-off with a moderate climb. I tend to agree that an updated 757 or similar design would be good for Boeing. For a long time, it was the most fuel-efficient jetliner in the skies. What did Boeing have to replace it? I think their thinking was the Max-10 would be the answer, which would have been accurate at the time.

    I flew the 757-300 about 2100 hours. I loved the airplane and since I never rode as a pax I don't have an opinion on comfort. I also flew the DC-8 63/73 in the late '80's till 1999 so I guess I was used to long airplanes. One memorable point of my career was I went to Seattle with my 757 fleet manager to pick up a brand new 757-300. Boeing really gives customers the royal treatment when you bring the big check.

    • @mikeab93
      @mikeab93 4 роки тому

      @col loc you're absolutely right. Boeing threw away a perfectly good aircraft. And, its performance is outstanding.

    • @steinwaldmadchen
      @steinwaldmadchen 4 роки тому

      @col loc You definitely miss a few points:
      1. Majority of 757 is 752, and majority of 752 flights were short haul, which A321 or 739 can more or less takeover.
      2. There were more than enough 752 left for TATL routes once they're replaced.
      3. 753 had the lowest CASM back then, but lack of range and relatively long turn over time preventing it from gaining traction.
      4. Asian, meanwhile, would go for A300/A310/A330 anyway (now 787 as well), because of cargo.
      5. 911 was never helping either.
      6. No one would keep a line just to hope for future demands. Or in other words - for Boeing, net profit for producing 737 in mass for 20 years and revisit MoM with cleansheet may outperform keeping 757 and producing a few every year. Same for Airbus' A380.

    • @steinwaldmadchen
      @steinwaldmadchen 4 роки тому

      @col loc 757 is too heavy as a shorthaul jet, anyway, and I'm not sure why you keep on saying A321/739 is smaller than 752 when some airlines essentially configure similar seat count on the former two. To any airlines the capacity difference is way smaller than you think.
      nvm, let’s go back to 753.
      1. While 757/767 were highly popular in Europe and America, it’s hardly the case in Asia. Japan, Korea and Taiwan are isolated in terms of land transport, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are popularized country with numerous islands, and a few more with unreliable or nonexistent infrastructure. As neither can take the LD-3 container effectively, they would either purchase A300 derivatives or abuse longhaul aircraft for shorthaul, after all they can’t make 2 longhaul roundtrips anyway.
      The only exception is Japan with their 767s, but partly to please US and support local suppliers involved. But now they don’t have to - 787 fulfills both criteria without compromising cargo hold.
      2. Short of range is what prevents airlines from ordering 753. Longer turnaround time have smaller effect on longer routes, as long as it can do 2 roundtrip. But 753 can’t do TATL. In a world of deregulation and fragmentation, large shorthaul jet isn’t a good idea. I don't know why.......762 is not that popular anyway, a TATL 753 could better fill that gap.
      3. But just like NMA vs A321XLR, some legacy carriers may found 767 better suit for a premium heavy config.
      4. Meanwhile, seems like the engines is a big question - PW1000G inadequate, GENx too much, and UltraFan isn’t there. But A322 would more or less face the same problem anyway.

    I've flown on a -200 series a few times from Atlanta to Costa Rica, and despite being shorter than the -300, it still took much longer for the flight crew to perform meal service than on most other planes of comparable length due to the single aisle configuration. Another downside of single aisled planes is not being able to get to a lavatory when meal service is being performed due to the aisle being blocked by food carts and crew. At least on wide-bodied aircraft you can go out the other side (if you're sitting in the middle section).

    Another great video! It made me think. I fly on United and avoid the -300: it’s often on LAX/ORD or other hub-to-hub runs. Conversely, I love-really love the -200: it’s my favorite plane after the B789: again, my experience is with United. As I think through why I don’t like the -300, there are two reasons: the ratio of first class to coach is low, so upgrades are rare. I’d take a B737 any day over a -300. United (actually Continental) got many of its -300s from ATA, so the inflight entertainment doesn’t compare to the B752.
    It’s a curiously attractive aircraft. I like watching it slink around taxiways, but I don’t like being a passenger on the B753.

Sadly, Condor stuffs 275 people in there. I'm 2 meters tall, so Economy Class in this plane is just a nightmare. And I totally agree, that boarding takes very long, especially when the aircraft is boarded on the apron without a jet bridge. So people with seats in the front start to board the plane from the rear entry and people with seats in the rear board the plane from the front entry. So the whole aisle is jammed with people while boarding. Never seen such a chaos before. :D

    I sadly never got to fly on the 757-300 which was retired in March 2020. But I'm familiar with the configuration and the downfalls. The experience is a bit lacking for the passengers seated in the exit rows. The jumpseats for the flight attendants are located directly in front of the passengers, and unavoidably you are knocking knees with the working crew. The both the 757-200 and 757-300 have this, but the -300 has an added exit with an extra jumpseat located uncomfortably close to that passengers in the exit row behind the wing.
    As mentioned, the food and drink service can take an exceptionally long time, especially on boozy flights like Las Vegas or the Carribbean destinations. It could be up to 45 minutes before the flight attendants get to your row.
    However, the design of these aircraft is much more comfortable compared to a 737 or airbus. The Galley's are larger and can accommodate a much bigger service and not be lacking any space or storage. The cabin is wider than the 737 which lends to a less cramped feeling, especially in the lavatories, seats and galleys. The aircraft also has much better power and performance than a 737 or Airbus 321, getting you up to cruising altitude much faster and to your destination much faster.

    I was a structural engineer on the team that installed the retractable tail skid on the 757-300. The 757-300 for a long time was the most efficient airplane available as measured by Cost per Available Seat Mile (CASM). It has only recently been supplanted by the A321LR according to Arkia which operates the type. It proved to be a very good replacement for the Northwest/Delta DC-10s which were primarily used to fly to Hawaii. The 757-300 was essentially a victim of the 9/11 crisis as the airlines who would have otherwise bought the airplane to augment their existing fleets of 757-200s were not in a position to do so. Boeing had averaged 40 orders and 45 deliveries per year in 2000 and 2001. The 757 only received seven (7) orders after 2001.

    I know the 757-200 the shirt varient with the RR engine was an absolute beast! wasn't as long as the 300 and it had a unique body to wing shape that made it almost like a smaller Learjet rather than larger commercial jet. Or a long pencil like the 300. The 200 also had longer lander gears from what I remember, i may be wrong. From the front it looked like a hawk, super athletic looking. The 200 carried on average of about 25 to 30 less passenegers and some of 757-300 were able to carry upwards to 289 passengers! Boeing figured just extend the 757 200 and call it day. They even kept the same engines. The b757-200 had engines that were so powerful that combined with the unique shape of its wings cause wake turbulence so powerful it bring down several planes and almost bring down a 747-400 and it consequently cause the FAA to space out planes taking after it add several minutes of time difference. I my self have been on a renewed overhauled model in Miami 4 years ago! The weather was rainy and stormy and some passengers seemed nervous and were asking the flight attendent about saftey and if there were any fighter later on or if they be transferred to another flight later on. caption gets on the pa to introduce him self and the second officer and then says " I'd like to welcome you on this newly overhauled and mighty powerful B 757-200. It's been equipped the latest and newest upgrades, as well as two updated engines and overhauled prat and Whitney that will send get this amazing bird to cruising atltitude much faster than any other plane in its size and seat configuration and given its unique wing shape and power to weight ratio well maneuver around the clouds very easily" he gives the passengers the option to get off which really wasn't warranted but i think he wanted to remind them that it was an option. Ill NEVER FORGET THE EXPERIENCE. IT ROCKETED ALL THE WAY UP TO 10K FEET AT A PITCH THAT MADE IT VERY HARD TO LEAN FORWARD ANYTHING MORE THAN A FEW INCHES! YOU CAN FEEL THE PRESSURE, IT WAS SOMETHING G THAT I NEVER FELT ON A PLANE BEFORE. HE WAS DOING THAT WHILE BANKING A FEW TIMES!! It had to be close a rate of 4,500 per minute. Which may not seem like alot but when you consider that it was full, bad weather and it maintained that rate close close to 20k feet! It probably leveled off to 3900 fpm at 15,000 feet. But yeah, that's my rant and fondest memory of a commercial airliner.

When I was on the -200, it took much shorter to board but the plane was not nearly as nice. On the -300, it was really cool to walk to the back of the plane because there is a galley towards the rear, but that is where the -200 would normally end, so you could see the extra seats on the -300.
