My dad used to own a Toyota Hilux (badged as just Truck in the N.A. market) with a 22R-E motor under the hood. That truck wasn't fast by any stretch of the imagination, but kick it into 4WD low and you could almost move mountains with it and get just about anywhere you wanted to go. Dad used to brag he could beat a Humvee at an off-road competition by just picking a trail with obstacles spaced just wide enough to clear his truck's mirrors because of how narrow the Hilux was in the early 90s. Over 300,000 miles later and what ultimately did the engine in was a crack in the block that leaked coolant right into the oil. I've always wanted to pick up a crew cab 4WD Hilux as a do-anything truck ever since.
Aaaagreed. It's a very hardy and durable motor. For a truck whose purpose is to just haul a bunch of stuff from A to B, you don't need a fast motor. Just one with enough torque to get you rolling without breaking a sweat. :)
My first relatively fast car was a Toyota corolla/sprinter with a 4age. An ae92 I think. Built in 1988. I originally bought it to put the engine in my Suzuki but decided I couldn't take a classic off the road.
Good selection. My favourite will always be the old 18RG. At a time in the 80s when Toyotas in Australia had horrible boring underpowered 18R engines, people started importing used 18RG engines from Japan by the shipping container load. For not much coin at all, they transformed RN46 Hiluxes, RT104 Coronas and many 2 litre Celicas from horribly boring shitboxes into fun street machines. The 4AGE was also revolutionary for its time and embarrassed many 6cyl and even V8 Holden and Ford owners off the lights.
Toyota is one of my favorite to build on for power, I own a Honda now but love my Toyota

1986 Toyota 2WD truck with 22RE and 5-speed. A 34 year daily driver, still is, with 473,000 miles on engine, fuel system, transmission, driveshaft, and rear end. Oil changed every 5,000 miles with good ole "Dino" oil- Castrol GTX 10W-40. Starts 1st crank within seconds and idles steady and smooth.
5VZ-FE In my 24 year old Tacoma is running like new and no issues. Had a '90 Corolla with 4A-FE that I bought with 230k miles and drove it for 6 years just doing normal maintenance. I can attest to the legendary record!
I would add the 1ZZ-FE, Not a powerhouse by any means but reliable as all hell, Got one in my '03 Vibe with almost 300k and it still purrs like a kitten
rysho True. But not so true for the pre-03 engines. I just pulled a 1zz out of my 00 Celica last year because it drank oil like a wwii battleship, kept fowling plugs, idled pretty bad as a result, and almost took out my cat. I used to joke around when asked what type of fuel I run I would say "I run mix". Got the 2ZZ in there now. Aside from still being underpowered imo, the car does run great. Lift is fun and the 6spd is even funner.
omnipotentum I'm not American, at least a Toyota can last more than an overrated piece of shit German car with useless technology and shit reliability, and does every car has to be faster? If so why do they put speed limits on highways??
Although being pretty underrated I think the 1nz-fe should be on this list because it can push decent power especially when you consider the weight (or lack there of) of it was used in as well as it being super reliable even by toyota standards. It still gets used in cars to this day.
😂😂😂 Only a Looser would defend a plastic unreliable money pit machine. I made stupid money fixing Mercedes and BMWs. When Scotty Kilmer and I tell the truth.
I've done my homework on the Toyota V8 swap. Even though it would be awesome mated to a 350z 6 speed and still affordable, I'm probably going to RB swap the car.
You should have also indicated which car models are using these engines on the caption. Instead of me googling every single engine to which Toyota vehicle car uses them.
You forgot to include Toyota's indestructible and reliable engine of all time the L series diesel. Yeah... it's a bit under powered,BUT it can't be killed as proven by Top Gear. these engines can last more than 900,000 km's. Some even install aftermarket turbo's on these things which result to cracked head gaskets. Personally I would prefer the N/A one's. Because you can feel the power the engine has to give without the help of a turbo.
Our old work had a Hilux with the 5L-E motor and it did struggle with the loads that the other utes pulled with relative ease (Holden/Isuzu Rodeo 2.5L TD and a couple of 2.5L TD Ford Couriers), but good god was that thing bulletproof. Tougher than a coffin nail
The 4U-GSE isn’t really a Toyota engine, it’s just Toyota’s designation for the FA20D. It’s still a Subaru engine in the end BC Toyota basically just added the D4S injection system. However, Toyota did the styling for the FRS/BRZ twins.
They developed the engine together, that makes it their engine as well. It has a Toyota designation, too. Many Toyota's engines are more like Yamaha's engine and still marketed as Toyota's.
Why didn't you mention the 1MZ-FE V6? I mean since its introduction 1992 in both the Lexus ES, and RX 300, Toyota Avalon, and the V6 Camry. The engineers at Toyota designed and built the 1MZ to be the most powerful, yet very durable engine for the time! I drive a 2nd gen Avalon with the 1MZ-FE V6, with close to 200K on the clock! VisioRacer perhaps you should do a video segment on the legendary 1MZ-FE engine. Make a tribute video for all the cars that Toyota put the 1MZ-FE in. :-)
I have a 00 Camry with a 1mz and E153 manual trans. I have 320000 miles on it and have never had the engine open (heads have never been off obviously oil pan gasket, valve covers and intake have needed to be serviced) my first Toyota after a slew of accords, DSM s and Nissan trucks and it's been my favorite car. As long as you service it by the book ( I'm a mechanic by trade) it will outlive most anything.
The 5VZ-FE is a little beast. It's only 3.4 liters, but its deep growl and low end torque make it the perfect engine for the first generation Tacoma. When you drive an automatic Tacoma V6 normally in town, it likes to shift gears within like 300 RPM of each shift because it doesn't need to rev much at all to move briskly with traffic. That's what I call a flat torque curve.
All of these engines deserved their spots on this list, but you can't forget about some of the great diesel engines toyota has made over the years, such as the D-4D (obviously) and basically every diesel engine found in a land cruiser.
I had a 1980 Celica GT as a kid, with the 22R and 5speed, it was the chubbiest Celica but it was still fun. I stripped a bunch of stuff (seats, wheels, and such) from a junked 1984 Celica GTS and bolted them on. I had a full race exhaust system but the header rusted through on the bottom of the collecter and it sounded like the bad guy's pod racer in Star Wars. Good times.
As for Diesel engines 1HDFT -1HDFTE are very smooth bullet proof reliable, efficient and can handle heaps of boost with a good tune! Very very well engineered
i own a toyota corolla t sport (one with the 2zz-ge) and has 121k miles on it and it still has factory compression, ive never had a problem with the engine itself ever!
they just don't care for supra (because it won't bring them any more money than they would need to develop engine as overengineered as 1 and 2 jz) and those Bmw engines people joke about are actually really good and can make up to 620-650 horsepower not to say anything about handling which M division cars are famed for having sublime
No one ever brings up the 2uz-fe which I have in my Sequoia and is an awesome engine that has gone for 1 million miles and can take a god damn beating.
Exactly. But it's too difficult to pop the head covers and retorque the bolts. Certainly more difficult then shitting in the comment on the engine they have only seen on the pictures.
There's nothing more magical than when Toyota and Yamaha get together to build an engine.
Yep - the 18RG with Yamaha head ( Hemi head with Yamaha emblem on the intake valves ) was one of my favorite .

Jorge Tamacas pls take good car of your AE86 but may i ask what type of AE86 do you have?
It was a Levin GT, but sadly I had to sell it (I have regrets for doing that) I miss that car!
Dang it must be a hard time to sell this great car and hard to forget that car because a lot of memories
2GR-FE IN MY 2011 RAV4 lOVE IT!! Perfect sleeper on the road.
My mom has an 03 4Runner with the bigger 1GR motor, getting to 250k in a couple of months.
I love how he shows a 3sge beams when he introduced the 3sgte.
The MR2 always sounds really good especially with the V6
Fastest nut ever, thanks to 1LR-GUE. Well done, Yamaha..
and keyboard too
Basically anything Yamaha touches sounds fantastic. Doesn't matter what industry the product is in lol
the 1LR-GUE must be the best sounding engine in this list
Manggala Arifano Ever*
Toyota GR Fan maybe
best on any list~
4:51 that sounds so gooooood :D
Love TOYOTA and most of the items that made in Japan - supper quality . keep up the good work.
Quality supper? Beans on toast is a good contender.
18rg built by TRD in a '71 celica. My mid 80's high school ride...back when 5.0 mustangs were fast at 160 Hp.
2zz better be here
LOL and its the first one. nice
Хозе Гонзалез fuck yeah I know right. My Corolla sportivo has the mad rev happy engine... I fucking love it
you are lucky. my corolla has the 4zz but i still love it
Not only is it here, but it's first.
Dat Toyota VTEC lol
Toyota is one of my favorite to build on for power, I own a Honda now but love my Toyota
1986 Toyota 2WD truck with 22RE and 5-speed. A 34 year daily driver, still is, with 473,000 miles on engine, fuel system, transmission, driveshaft, and rear end. Oil changed every 5,000 miles with good ole "Dino" oil- Castrol GTX 10W-40. Starts 1st crank within seconds and idles steady and smooth.
I have the 3uz in my gs430 and I love that damn engine so smooth and gets up and goes for how heavy the car is
Whoops! 3:47
Your part with the 4U-GSE at 7:11 was 🔥🔥🔥
Your videos are very interesting and educative.
your voice is awesome man fuck the haters, its what makes you stand out, lots of other channels with info like you but no voice
Thank you!
$100 says the 1uz's in here💯
Edit: told yall
Imported 1ZZ-FE and I’m in love with the sound!
5VZ-FE In my 24 year old Tacoma is running like new and no issues. Had a '90 Corolla with 4A-FE that I bought with 230k miles and drove it for 6 years just doing normal maintenance. I can attest to the legendary record!
I would add the 1ZZ-FE, Not a powerhouse by any means but reliable as all hell, Got one in my '03 Vibe with almost 300k and it still purrs like a kitten
rysho
True.
177SCmaro in other news a 16 year old engine is using oil.
yh but some of the pre-03 1zzfe engines used oil even after just 35-40k miles. it was a big issue and some cars were recalled.
NathanCelica shame. 😥 good thing my dad’s caldina is an 04 😂
There was a version of the 1zz used in the series 2 lotus Elise
I know that u know jz series are straight 6, but there's a mistake in 1jz/2jz because u wrote it's inline 4
I was hoping to see my Tacoma’s 5VZFE engine here, although I’m past 240 k miles and still running strong
I have a 4A-FE in my 92 Celica ST. Running strong at 240,000 miles.
You still have to go more killos ..mine it has more that 300 000 .But still drive good.
4A-GE has such an iconic sound to it
toyota is the best
omnipotentum fuck off
At making boring cars for sure
because popular?
omnipotentum my friends BMW was back in the shop for electrical problems a week after he bought it. stfu
omnipotentum I'm not American, at least a Toyota can last more than an overrated piece of shit German car with useless technology and shit reliability, and does every car has to be faster? If so why do they put speed limits on highways??
Although being pretty underrated I think the 1nz-fe should be on this list because it can push decent power especially when you consider the weight (or lack there of) of it was used in as well as it being super reliable even by toyota standards. It still gets used in cars to this day.
1nz-fe continues the Toyota tradition of highly reliable engine. Its successor, the 1zr-fe is also very reliable as well as fun to drive.
Lol troll is back that says that same shit on every thead because he hates Toyota. He's a German money pit fan boy.
😂😂😂 Only a Looser would defend a plastic unreliable money pit machine. I made stupid money fixing Mercedes and BMWs. When Scotty Kilmer and I tell the truth.
omnipotentum fanboy
omnipotentum if toyota is soo bad and you hate them so much why did you even watch the video.... Why are you in these comments?
This guy called the JZ series 4 bangers
Its crazy how no one caught that. I had to search for your comment. How can someone fuck up the most famous engine? maybe he is trolling?
@@CrookCountySoftwear idk
Owner of 1989 Toyota 4X4 Ext Cab Hilux with 22RE, 2003 Lexus IS300 with NA 2JZ, and 1994 Lexus LS400 with 1UZ. Fantastic engines!
5:04 Omg,soooo good looking engine!!
Japan egines are best.
That 1UZ made me think I want one in my S13. +1 Poor Man Mods
Don't forget the iron block 4.7L 2UZ or alloy block 4.3L 3UZ exists as well. They're great motors and tougher than a coffin nail....
Go on man, 2JZ price are skyrocketing these days and weighs more
I've done my homework on the Toyota V8 swap. Even though it would be awesome mated to a 350z 6 speed and still affordable, I'm probably going to RB swap the car.
Vh45de better for your car 💪🏼
the UZ series would be more reliable then an LS chevy engine so its a great idea.
You should have also indicated which car models are using these engines on the caption. Instead of me googling every single engine to which Toyota vehicle car uses them.
Matt: Ask for a refund!
The LFA has to be one of the most special Toyota vehicles ever made, and I hope it is as highly regarded as the 2000GT one day.
forgot my 3 L V6 3 VZ-Fe in my Mr2 ... i am so unhappy.. i love the engine.. sounds great ; works fine since 200k km
Or go one better with the H series, indestructible and the opportunity for big power when talking about 1HD-FTE etc.
The 4U-GSE isn’t really a Toyota engine, it’s just Toyota’s designation for the FA20D. It’s still a Subaru engine in the end BC Toyota basically just added the D4S injection system. However, Toyota did the styling for the FRS/BRZ twins.
True, Toyota just put on their injection system.
MoarButtsecks and they nailed it with the design imo
They developed the engine together, that makes it their engine as well. It has a Toyota designation, too. Many Toyota's engines are more like Yamaha's engine and still marketed as Toyota's.
Toyota owns Subaru and Yamaha at least 45% of the company
Toyota doesn't own Subaru, they are joint companys
Jz a inline 4 ?
What?
You are seriously
was bouta coment that
it's time to subscribe. just couldn't resist that toyota v12...
cheers for the 2zz mention, its often overlooked
LFA the best sounding car ever i will have one one day.
OMG the wing on the first mr2 actually looks great first time i've seen one
i know u hate Diesels but 2AD-FHV in avensis, auris, rav-4, IS220 is awesome with removed cat.
ShutuP Drift no please
they weren't that reliable tho...
u say no ? 180k with 0 problems. only oil change
I beg to differ, we've seen quite a few problems with them at our workshop...
They Burn oil ALOT
My 11 year old scion tc runs perfectly. I love Toyota
Обажаю японцев за их технику.молодцы ребята
Men you forgot the lengendary 4k engine
K..3k..4k..5k.. all good reliable engines...
Had a 93 Camry with a V6...might have had it idk. It was fast for a stock car.
@@2GSpyderTurbo Yep they are strong for sure.
I got a 94 camry coupe le with the 1mzfe in it and same mileage. Still running like brand new
are they sludgers
1jz GTE does it for me
he said inline 4 wtf its a inline 6
1UZ and 1GZ for me :)
1jz or 2jz for me
The 5VZ-FE is a little beast.
Can't stop binge watching this
All of these engines deserved their spots on this list, but you can't forget about some of the great diesel engines toyota has made over the years, such as the D-4D (obviously) and basically every diesel engine found in a land cruiser.
Where's the 4E-FTE
Is it one wich was in toyota starlet gt?
I love the old NA 22R engines. They are nearly indestructible.
I have one myself in my old yota pick up with 200k miles runs like a champ very solid and bullet proof engines.
My neighbor has a few of them, they are a great bullet proof motor.
Edwin Medrano me too! 👊
Good times.
Blew a hole threw the block and it still got me home but that 1uz pickup looks fun
Damn. That 1UZ-FE tho? Sounds beast.
5S-FE anyone?? :) built like a tank
how the hell can you put the 22r and not 2tg put 19rg?
(11600 rpm intensifies)
edit: imagine that if Toyota made a 4A-GTE
holy crop lmao
“Holy Crop”
Quite a few folks, including yours truly, did supercharger to supercharger swaps on the 4A-GZE thus making their engine a 4A-GTE.
Lol mitsubishi lancer evo viii 16000 rpm (with firmware)
1:10 VVT-I kicked in yo
1988-1992 2.0 3SFE was a great engine,my mother,brother,2 sisters had Camries with that engine, all had over 350,000 miles and kept running..
I had an 18RG 2.0L twin cam hemi head with twin Solex carbies and a 3V 3.0 L V8 ( no emission control ) when I was young - lots of fun
You forgot the 5VZ-FE, but still a great video.
Tyler, they are fuel guzzling V6 monsters haha
But they are probably the highest mileage Toyota engines. I know some folks pushing 500k with no issues. My 5VZ-FE just passed 300k...
Hahaha puts his video also credits himself!!Boss 😄😄
at 2:27 its a 3s-ge BEAMS redtop going inside a mr2 sw20
Exactly, not a 3S-GTE
I forgave it, a redtop is lovely
As for Diesel engines 1HDFT -1HDFTE are very smooth bullet proof reliable, efficient and can handle heaps of boost with a good tune! Very very well engineered
i own a toyota corolla t sport (one with the 2zz-ge) and has 121k miles on it and it still has factory compression, ive never had a problem with the engine itself ever!
Wait, where is Toyota Prius engine?
NeRxHD 😂
In the trash where it belongs
hahahaha,...its listed under 10 most amazing cats!
forget it.
NeRxHD lol
So good at making engines that they borrowed a bmw engine for mk5 supra so that they dont end up making a bad engine for it
they just don't care for supra (because it won't bring them any more money than they would need to develop engine as overengineered as 1 and 2 jz) and those Bmw engines people joke about are actually really good and can make up to 620-650 horsepower not to say anything about handling which M division cars are famed for having sublime
Earl dude, the whole car (supra) is a re badged bmw, come on mate , lol
You forgot about the 2t-c engine
I also think the 2E engine is good
No one ever brings up the 2uz-fe which I have in my Sequoia and is an awesome engine that has gone for 1 million miles and can take a god damn beating.
That's toyota for you, all the people that want the fancy cars dont know!
That Toyota is one of the best engine builders is not arguable. I say they’re the best and you may argue that.
no 7M-GTE?
Unreliable as fuck, one of the worst Japanese engines
Its one of the worst engines lmfao, inb4 "but as long as you rebuild the motor, give it some better heaad gaskets, and better cooling." Etc. Etc.
Exactly. But it's too difficult to pop the head covers and retorque the bolts. Certainly more difficult then shitting in the comment on the engine they have only seen on the pictures.
Anthony Suarez ugh, congratulations, you solved one of several problems that infects the 7m.
Like what?
