    The Toyota 3SGE and 3SGTE have finally hit Iconic Engines. The 3SGE and 3SGTE are probably the engines that I got most requests to do. So here they are, as the fifth episode of Iconic engines.
    I think that the 3SGE and 3SGTE engines may be Toyota's best four cylinder, perhaps even best engine altogether. Now before ya'll 2jz people flame me, watch the video and see what makes these engines so great. The 3sge and 3sgte started in 1984. It was a different time back then, a different economy. Toyota had set it's sights on showing the world what it can do by over-engineering everything it could. Toyota also needed a new large flagship four cylinder engine (the 2.0 liter 18R-G was very much outdated by 1984). The 3sgte and 3sge engines were born lucky. It was the right time, Toyota had the right vision, needed a new 2.0 liter four cylinder flagship and the Japan 80s bubble was in full swing.
    Both the naturally aspirated and turbo version of the 3s engines as found in the MR2 mk2 sw20 and Celica GT-four gt4, among other cars, gave automotive enthusiasts access to lightweight compact power-plants that made good power, could be tuned to make even more and were reliable. Although the 3sgte and 3sge did something amazing for car fans and drivers, they did something far more amazing for Toyota when it comes to motor sport. The 3sgte is by far Toyota's most successful racing engine and here's the evidence to prove it.
    1. Tom's Castrol Supra
    They removed a 2jz so they could fit a 3sgte into a Supra. That Supra with an inline four than beats inline six RB powered Nissan Skyline GTR cars in the All Japan Grant Touring Car Championship (JGTCC, today known as Super GT) Enough said.
    2. WRC ST185 Celica GT Four
    The ST185 Celica GT4 is Toyota's most successful rally car ever. But that's not important. What's important is that it was the first AWD Turbo Japanese car that won titles and trophies in the WRC and disrupted the dominance of European brands. By the time Subaru and Mitsubishi came to kick ass in the WRC, "Celica wuz here" was written on the track.
    3. Eagle MKIII
    The Eagle MKIII was Dan Gurney's All American Racers race car. It was powered by a 800 hp heavily tuned 3SGTE. The block was off the shelf OEM block. The Eagle MKIII won 21 out of 27 races and was so good that the racing class it was created for had to be abolished because of it.
    4. Still not convinced. What about Rod Millen's "Celica"? (Not a real Celica, just a tubular chassis monster). But it was powered by another crazily tuned 3sgte, with 888hp in a car that weighed 880 kg. Rod Millen, this car, and its 3sgte will remain as the eternal champions of the all dirt version of Pikes Peak (the REAL Pikes Peak), because Rod Millen's 10:04:06 from 1994 was only beaten 13 years later, when 46% of Pikes Peak had already been paved.
    When it comes to the specs the 3SGE and 3SGTE use a simple proven design for engine performance and reliability. These square engines employ a cast iron block with a forged steel fully counter-weighted crankshaft that spins on five main bearings. The rods and pistons are cast but a very good design. We have a DOHC alloy cylinder head with both cam gears spun by a rubber timing belt. We have 16 valves and a pent roof combustion chamber design with good squish areas. The 3sge and 3sgte engines were on the market for 23 years and during that time they significantly evolved. The 3sge started with a modest 135 horsepower but ended with a very respectable 210 horsepower in the gen 5 3sge blacktop beams. The 3sgte started with 185 horsepower and ended up with 260 horsepower in the gen 4 and gen 4 3sgte Toyota Caldina.
    When it comes to tuning, the motor-sport heritage of the 3s engines shows you that they have amazing potential. However 3sge stage 1 stuff like intake, headers and cams won't yield desired results until a standalone ECU is thrown into the mix. Big naturally aspirated power will come at a cost and will require custom internals, crazy cams and serious tuning experience. But fear not, there's a super quick path to crazy fun by swapping a redtop or blacktop beams into an older Toyota chassis (ae86, aw11, ke70, kp61, ta22).
    When it comes to the Turbo 3SGTE bigger power is naturally achieved more easily. The stock 3sgte internals are usually tuned to around 400 horsepower relatively safely and reliable. Big turbo 3sgte power will require forged rods and pistons, giant turbos and similar upgrades, but the 3sgte stock block and crank have seen beyond 1000 hp without much issues.

    this was so good thanks for making the video. but there is a few facts missing,
    1 the race cars shown don't use a "3sgte" its the 503E which the 3sgte is based on (503e existed before it),
    2 the biggest missed fact of toda racing built 3sge (gen 1) for japans formula 3 and were fantastic making insane na power for the time (1980's)
    3 the gen 2/3 3sgte blocking cracking is also around the water pump and between cylinders 2 and 3. this was due to casting movements and affects random blocks some will crack with 300hp some not til 1000+hp just depends on the block.
    4 within the mr2 community they is now many reliable, solid builds using the stock gen 4 3sgte making 400whp with no troubles at all but they are some thin connecting rods.
    5 the main down fall of the 3s and 5sfe is oiling, specifically the oil pump. it is a little undersized and is prone to damage from contamination, less oil pumped, no oil pressure, spun bearings. but this is fix with a 98+ camry oil pump or gen 4/5 3sgte one

    • @willgreer4321
      @willgreer4321 4 роки тому +17

      Yep be lost me a bit after mixing up the 503e. Dont try and make 800 hp on the stock block!!!. I have a gen 3 motor in my 185 and all though people do upgrade the oil pumps on high hp builds I wouldnt call it the main failure, I very rarely hear of oil pump issues. Cracked blocks at 400hp + yes definitely, not so much pumps. Much of oil starvation pre gen 3 has been attributed to poor sump baffling.

      I'm not arguing or anything so don't jump down my throat, what's the second fact he's missing? That Toda racing used 3sge's for formula 3? Is that really an important missing fact? Does he need to mention everywhere this engine was ever used? I'm sure you'll be able to convince me I'm just asking.

      The late gen 3 blocks were revised (97 or 98+), had a reinforced waterpump area, and Toyota used better castings. These are equivalent in strength to the gen 4 blocks.

    I like the 3sgte for its reliable power output and small size giving it the option to fit in many chassis and also gives weight advantages like when they swapped the supra with it. The 3sge is also very nice of an engine and has lots of potential even in the heavy toyota altezza it still performs well. Problems is not like the 2jz. They have block casting issues. They like crack between cylinders 2 and 3. They are good for 300-400 whp but you start pushing them to over 500 whp plus they will crack the cylinder wall. That’s why they use 5sfe block on big builds.

    I'm pretty sure that the 503E engine, which was in the cars like the Eagle Talon mk3, was the basis of the 3S engine. Being a race engine, many materials were exotic, such as the block, which was a special iron that isn't the same as the typical cast iron you see in the vast majority of engines. The cylinder heads are also completely unique, due to the differences in water jackets and cooling between the 503E and the 3S-GTE. They are directly related however!

    Love this series! The ST165(1986-1989) was the first AWD Turbo 4cyl to win titles in the WRC. The 165 is the first iteration of the 3sgte, renowned for its incredible block. A 1sgt gen Block Frankenstined with a 185 or 205 head and later model turbo setups is an ironclad street and strip monster. My 1sgt gen GTE has been running on its original rebuilt using other gen parts and a JDM GRP A trans for almost 10 years and reliably makes close to 350 at the wheels. Gas
    Mileage is shitty but I didn’t build it as a commuter. Find some of the older Gt-Four and home built Gt2’s out there from the early 2000’s and ask them what they ran back then. Later model heads and turbo parts. 1st gen Blocks. Solid and proven combo. Keep doing this series its badass!

      @d4a  4 роки тому +2

      @@FumanShu8 I was referring to a heavily tuned naturally aspirated 3sge. To get big NA power you need to make the engine rev very high and high powered NA four cylinders usually have a weak bottom end of the power curve and poor idle and are very loud as a consequence. This makes it kinda crappy around town. But I'm really speaking about heavily tuned naturally aspirated engines around the 300hp+ mark as you can see in the video. As for iconic American engines? You don't get more iconic than the 454 big block Chevy and it's small block brother, the 350. The LS series engines are more common, but in terms of engines that make up a huge part of car culture history in America, it's predecessors take the cake. Decades of racers used Chevy engines in classic hot rods, drag cars, street cars, low riders, and everything else you can imagine.

    My suggestion for an european engine: VAG AEB 1.8T but be aware its most likely that Volkswagen asked Toyota how to build this 20V turbocharged fourcylinder inline engine since Toyota had the same technology years in advance. The AEB is an engine with good availability nowadays and it can reach 350hp with mild tuning and up to 1000hp with major tuning.

      On a second thought there is nothing iconic about the AEB. The original Audi Quattro engines seem more likely to fit to your series of iconic engines. Namely the WR or its beefier brother RR. Inline five cylinder engines with 2144ccm displacement from the mid 80s.

    Very different kind of engines but definitely need to do the good old Land Cruiser engines, the F, 2F, 3F engines and the 1FZ successor.

    I have a 3SGE in my awd rav4. Gotta say its not the fastest thing but all wheel drive and 2700lbs gets it done. I love the little thing.
