Toyota 2JZ - What makes it GREAT? ICONIC ENGINES #14

  • What is up engine heads! Today it's time for a true modern icon. A combination of a number and two letters known by pretty much every petrolhead out there. Of course, I'm talking about the Toyota 2JZ engine and in today's video we will dive deep into it's anatomy to discover what makes the 2JZ so great.
In 1978 Toyota wanted a car that would complete with Nissan's very successful Z car, without making a whole new platform. So it took it existing Celica, widened and lengthened it a bit and stuffed the inline six M engine under the hood, creating a bond between the word supra and an inline six, a bond that exists to this day. The new super Celica was called Celica Supra.
The Celica Supra lives until 1986, until the word Celica and Supra came apart, and turned into two seprate models. The Supra was no longer mechanically related to the Celica, but was based on the Toyota Soarer platform, a larger and more upmarket platform that gave the Supra room to grow. The new mk3 Supra also received the latest and final version of Toyota's M engine, the 7M-GE and 7M-GTE, which made some pretty serious power for the 80s and gave the supra true grand touring credentials. In Japan the mk3 Supra was also the first one to get some JZ lovin' because in Japan it could be found with the 1JZ engine, signaling the way of the future for Toyota's sports flagship.
In 1993 we would see just how great the future was, because in 1993 Toyota revealed the mk4 Supra, and this time Toyota went all out. The mk4 Supra continued on the path set by it's predecessor it offered more of everything. More power, more equipment, better handling and less weight. But a rising yen and a weakening sports car market ended its career pretty quickly, and the world had to wait two decades for a successor. But these two decades are when the 2JZ legend was forged. In 2001 the Fast and the Furious movie came out and the whole world fell in love with the Supra. And tuners soon started pushing the output of the 2JZ, trying to find its limits. But there was an issue, it seemed the word "limit" wasn't in the 2JZ's vocabulary. In 2019 Toyota released the mk5 Supra and sigh of disappointment from the fan-base echoed across the world. Fans expected a 2JZ successor but received a BMW sourced B58 engine instead. And although the new car is objectively good, the new engine too, fans soon started demanding a 20+ year old engine be swapped into the new car.
An inline six is a beautifully balanced engine, because in essence it consists of two inline 3 engines which are mirror images of each other. This means that in practice both the primary and secondary forces are balanced out in an inline 6. The engine block is, as we know a cast iron closed deck unit. But there's more to it, the 2jz block is one of the most heavily reinforced blocks out there. It has 11 oil return holes that also act as massive reinforcement ribs. On top of this it incorporates thick curved surfaces for even more rigidity. And to go the extra mile it has a girdle which ties together the bottom of the block making it even sturdier. Watch the video for a bit of comparison of the 2JZ, the RB30, S54, and Ford Barra. The internals are, as expected massive and beefy. The crankshaft is forged steel with very wide and large 52mm rod and 62mm main journals. Rods are also forged steel and are meaty on all 2JZ except on the late model 2JZ-GE with VVTi. The pistons are high pressure cast hypereutectic pistons with an internal oil gallery that combines with the piston oil squirters in the turbo 2JZ block to directly cool the crown underside and reduce chances of knock. The 2JZ turbo has a 8.5:1 compression ratio, which is pretty low by modern standards but it does make cranking up the boost safer. The CR is 10:1 on the non vvti naturally aspirated 2jz and 10.5 on the late model vvti ones. We have 33.5mm intake and 29mm exhaust valves, along with a 45 degree valve included angle. The 2JZ head flows pretty well, but it isn't the best and some engines from the same era will outflow it, which means some porting is a good idea if your power appetites are very big.
When it comes to 2JZ tuning you know the drill. Upgrade the fuel pump and injectors, ditch the side mount intercooler in favor of a front mount intercooler, upgrade the cams and valve springs, switch to a big single turbo, get a standalone ECU and you're looking at 700-800 horsepower. If you want to go beyond this you'll need to open up the engine and get forged pistons and 4340 forged aftermarket rods. The crankshaft can stay unless you're going beyond 1200-1500 hp (depending on application). You need a billet block only if you're interested in power figures near 2000 hp.

what about a suzuki hayabusa engine, hasn’t changed much in all 3 generations and been around since the 90s. its been swapped into cars, water crafts, atv’s, converted to a v8, etc. proven to able to handle boost well and used in many different disciplines of motorsports. keep up the good work.

Hey buddy, I just bought myself a Christmas present; a 1994 LHD Twin Turbo 1JZ-GTE Soarer/SC300 project. It’s incomplete but it runs and drives so well! The stock twins are seemingly always in boost.
My 1990 MR2 Turbo and my 1994 Celica Turbo have finally met their big brother! Still got the LS400 holding down daily duties so my dream garage is finally complete! Just wanted to share that with someone who can relate.

Horsepower wise they usually make 400-500 hp but they are able to make 1800 ft lbs of torque. The inline 6 turbocharged combo is elite.

Great video. I learned alot. The description of the compound turbos is backwards thought. Air enters from the air filter to the large charger (primary) then into the smaller charger (secondary) then into the engine. It seems backwards on first thought. Using pressure ratios to increase the air into the engine. It would not work with a small charger first into a large charger because the small charger would restrict the big charger creating a restriction instead of increased air flow. Very common in diesel engines. Would love if you did a video on the 12v Cummins, which I had a compound setup on. Keep it up

A really cool engine I'd love to see is the Toyota 22r, and 22re. I'd love to see a great explanation of the engine. Love this series btw.

Another awesome video! What are your thoughts on the 2tc, 2tg, and 3tc? The T series engines have good history. Guys in Puerto Rico have been pumping those engines for decades. Keep up the good work!

The 7M got more reinforcement after 1990, and a much more balanced crank resulting in a lower redline (6500 vs 6250). The 7MGE and 2JZGE are much more similar than you realize. I ran my 2JZGE off complete 7MGE electronics in my 92 MKIII with zero issues.

I kinda went looking for this comment before remarking similarly. I haven't owned a 7m or 2J, but have torn a few of each completely down and own a mkii with a 5mge - the iterative development is very evident. It's crazy to say, but the roots of the 2jz go back to the first M engine in the 2000GT - Toyota and Yamaha had it right basically from the beginning.

What I still don't really get is the demands on swapping a 2jz into a new supra. As far as I know, the b58 engine weighs almost 3 times less than a 2jz.

I’m not so convinced. Bmw in-line 6s are also pretty damn good and the new one (b58 I believe?) is already hitting some crazy numbers very early in its life.

My favorite is the GR series of engines. I wish the aftermarket would grab this series and we could see more of these in off-road and race builds. 1 and 2GR as RWD street rods is possible.

I saw a video of a 2GR swapped MR2 that was faster than any other V6 on the hillclimb, even AWD. Very underrated engine and in a car that lightweight it's an absolute monster.

One comment i have is the audio is often echoey from the room you are in. Have you considered throwing some pillows against the wall in front of you while you record?
Anyway all the best! Keep it up 👍

Sadly it is a bit echoey. I did buy a new NTG2 from rode but I can't get it to work. I haven't tried pillows but I'm in the process of getting some foam and gluing it on the wall or something.

Been waiting for this one. I only learned about the 2jZed after I bought my 1986 Grand National. Someone said something about a comparison between the LC2 motor, 109 block, in the Grand National and the 2jzed. The first comment was, there's no comparison. The block in the Grand National is straight up a junk pushrod v6 block. Pretty crazy that a car with the reputation of the Grand National, heart is nothing more than a late 70's design off-center v6. The person did say though, it's an apples to oranges comparison. One is a v6 and the other is an i6. The i6 is a naturally balanced engine, meaning is doesn't have to deal with the primary and secondary engine harmonics like the v6, therefore can rev higher. The v6 bulk heads or main saddles are not beefy at all and this can lead to the main saddles cracking around the main bolt hole at higher RPM. Whereas the 2jzed has very beefy main saddles along with 7 main caps, as opposed to the 4 main caps found on the 109 block. This was one of the main reasons the 2jzed block is so superior, 7 main caps to absorb the load. Then the 109 is a pushrod v6 and the 2jzed is DOHC. I'm not sure if the 2jzed has aluminum heads or not, but the LC2 has cast iron and even with a full port job they don't flow that great. I won't say it's nothing to get 1000whp out of a 2jzed, but it takes every trick in the book to get a 1000 whp out of a 109 block. Try and take it any further and the block will split. Some 109 blocks have split 600 whp. Block wasn't designed to survive above 500 crank hp. To boot, a 2jzed block is lighter. So Toyota did a great job with the design of the 2jzed. Love seeing a 3.0L engine out performing monster displacement ci motors.
