- Was it a mistake putting these 285/70r17 BFGoodrich KO2s on my 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? It rubs… quite a bit. And I cringe often while driving. This is a stock TRD Pro. Keep in mind the 22 TRD Pro comes with a slightly higher lift than previous years.
I have a few options…
1. Buy an Icon lift kit… similar to what I had on my “old” 2017 Cement Grey Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.
2. Buy a Westcott Designs perch lift and call it good.
3. Sell the Tacoma and buy a 2023 Ram TRX Sandblast Edition …well, because Merica.
What are your thoughts?

That offset is a lot to overcome, it’s why I kept it TRD Pro wheels on my 4Runner with 2” spacer lift.
I’m running 285 -12 and slapping on the Wescott lift fixed my rubbing issue.
That looks really good. I feel you on the rub noise though. Even though it barely damages anything, that sound is like a nail-biting experience for some reason lol.
It barely damages anything until you take it off the pavement.
I like your Tacoma, I have a 2020 Pro in the Army Green and I’m a lot like you I didn’t want to change the truck from the stock stance and suspension setup. I did go up a tire size and put Method wheels 17x8.5 on and I think it sits perfect. Im not a off-roader per say but I do love to hike so getting to those trails heads & scenic views does take some off-roading . I’m not afraid to use it but I didn’t want any rubbing issues and I don’t. And in saying all that I think you have it figured out two options go down a tire size or buy the Westcott collar lift. Running stock suspension on my OR and running 285s currently. Had to get a CMC and good amount of trimming. I will say it was all worth it. For what its worth

I just bought a set of 265 75r16 Toyo tires KMC with zero offset. It looks awesome with my stock suspension and my truck is a 2 wheel drive. No rubbing no trimming or cutting needed the perfect combination.

The perch lift would have the least impact on stock ride quality so that's what I would do, and it's the cheapest lol.
I put 285’s on the 4Runner but I had to lift it 3”. Get Fox 2.5 and lift it 3”. I think the Tacoma looks sweet with a 4” lift with 34” tires
One option, drop to 32 inch tires and sell your current 285 tires, or you add a spacer in the front and a block spacer in the rear to keep the truck level, I wouldn't change out the stock Fox shocks, unless your planning on going off road.
Have you tried heating up the Fender liner with a heat gun and pushing It forward some of my buddies have done that And they've also done a cab mount Chop So what does it rub on the back
How do you think 265-70/17 -12 offset would have worked? I have a 23' and I'm trying to make a decision. Thanks
2 inch spacer and bigger leaf spring all you need. A lot of people just gets rid of the oem shocks because they don’t give enough lift, but the oem fox shock is just as good as any aftermarket shocks.
Hey man love the videos. You should do more mods on that sweet Tacoma. Front bumper, rock sliders, lights, rear bumper and more mods. A few guys at work have bought a hitch step from you. If you make videos modding this truck you will get more views. The taco community is really big and loves to see mods for exterior and interior. I'd say go with the Westcott Design option. I have a 2020 4R TRD Pro. When my 265s wore out (at about 58K miles I think it was) I put on 275s KO2s and no issues at all (except I dropped about 1.2 mpg). When my 275s wear out I think I'll get the Wescott Design perch and put on 285 KO2s.
So you have a lift with the 275s?
@@vokul_vegan No lift is required for the 4Runner TRD Pro with the factory (FOX) suspension for 275s. The TRD Pro is the only 4R model that has the FOX suspension as standard. I have had the 275s on for quite a while now (probably more than 30K+ miles) with no rubbing issues at all, on or off-road.... Also, since my original comment above...I don't think I'll go with the Westcott Design option. I'll shop around for a lift that is the same amount of lift, front and back (to maintain the front rake).

I hear yah man… I’m normally the same way (as you know). I typically like doing just small tweaks/mods to make it “my own”… this wheel/tire setup was a little out of my comfort zone.
would 275/70r17 tires rub with a stock 2023 Tacoma TRD Sport with the mudflaps? even if i switch wheels with the 4runner pro wheels?

Currently running SEMA TRD pro wheels 17x7 +4 offset , fitted with nitto graplers 285/70r17 no rubbing issues at all with mud flaps. Also running bilstein 5100 lift, 2 front 1 rear. 0 offset is pretty much the sweet spot. If your offset is negative, 100% it will rub and needs modification like cmc or cab mount relocation etc. lifting it more is not really going to help to fix the rubbing issues. Or maybe try the SPC adjustable UCA.
Yeah you’re right. These wheels didn’t work on this Tacoma. They’re absolutely perfect on my 4Runner TRD Peo though. Check out my latest videos if you haven’t already. They’re on my voodoo blue 4Runner now. I love it!
I would just pull the tires in.(less offset) You have 30mm between the tire and the control arm. If you must, i agree with your Wescott option. I am of the ilk that Chevrolet used to dub "gentleman jim", so i opt for just a little bigger tires on nicer factory wheels.
Was wondering if you're gonna install a rear differential breather or just keep the stock rear diff breather set-up? I'm thinking about getting an ARB rear diff breather kit for my 4R.

I just sold my Tacoma and bought a 2022 wrx today. I would run 265/70/17 BFG K02's instead of the 285 if it was mine, Cheers man!

Need? No… should you? Yes.
275-70-17 would be 1/2 in. less diameter, 265-70-17 would be an inch less diameter. I would mount a smaller tire on the rim, no doubt 285 will rub on hard turns and bumps. But, if you have any plans to buy a 23 Tacoma to own the final current gen Pro year I'd leave it as is. Either way you've got yourself a mighty fine looking truck pal.😉👌

I have similar lift on my 2020 TRDOR and just went with 265/75/16, still great off-road and looks good. Did you consider 275/70/17? gain back just a few millimeters of space while also cutting down on weight.
That’s what I run on my 4Runner. I’m on a Wescott lift stock wheels and 285 would rub unless you trim and remove the front mud flap. So I run 275/70/17 and it’s big enough for my mall crawling lifestyle with an occasional trail excursion.
I considered a little smaller at the beginning but between the -20 offset and minor additional lift of the 23 Pro I had hope it’d work better with 285s. I was wrong though! I’m definitely open minded to a tire drop drop but wonder if the Westcott perch lift will do the trick at this point.
The good thing is your not rubbing on the cab mount, buuut I say lift it? 🤷♂️ I’m lifted 285/75/R16 -12 offset and my cabmount and tire are hanging out more than I would like! Nothing a good chop can’t fix! Either way loving the progress on your pro! 😎🔥

I’m on the fence between getting just a Westcott perch lift or a legit Icons kit. Haven’t looked much into the chop. Wonder how common this job is out here in MD. So I’ll need to find a reputable place…
@@UntamedMotors im not too far from you, to be honest the cab mount chop is not hard. On the driver side there are wires that you need to watch out for but most shops are already aware and any decent welder can put the plate on 👍

The stock TRD pro wheels would have fixed that problem.
Should of went with zero offset, which is 4.5 off backspacing
I’d go get a heat gun and heat that fender liner up and massage it forward a little. Just be careful not to melt it.

Yeah there was a slight rub and it was lifted and trimmed. =\ not an ideal setup for off-roading
I got 285 with zero offset method 305s with a 2.5 in lift no cuts needed and I don’t rub at full lock and flex off roading

Is the intention to run a 33 in tire? Maybe you can run a pizza cutter 255/80/17 instead. That way you can keep the height & sidewall while reducing the rolling resistance

Sweet spot on most Toyota vehicles is +20 to +25 offset. Everyone that I know that has ran 285's on a Tacoma has had to lift at least 2.75" to clear (except Trd Pro). They've also had to run a zero offset to clear the stock UCA's.

@@UntamedMotors no you will need to do more cutting. With that - offset the scrub radius is too wide. In the articulation of the tire you're going to rub if all you plan on doing is driving it on the street the rubbing should be very minimal with a small lift.

So there’s some confusion here. I also own the 2022 ELM PRO. It has a 1.5” factory lift over the TRD OR in the front and a 0.5”lift in the rear, again over the OR. Prior year PROs which were 1” over the TRD OR in the front and 0” higher in the rear. So, this year the TRD PRO is 0.5” higher in the front and the rear over the prior year PROs.

How do you like it going down the Interstate with the 285? I have 285 on my TRD OR and I can’t go over 65 or It’ll downshift like crazy every other minute. I honestly don’t know what to do about it.
I haven’t experienced that issue yet… hmmm. Perhaps when going up and down light hills it’d do it. But haven’t dealt with that yet.
I run 285's with 5.29 gears and no problem
Did you re-gear? I'm seeing so many videos on here where guys are lifting their trucks with a larger tire setup and not re-gearing.
I did not re-gear. It helps but isn’t needed.
Those GoRhino RB10s sure do hang low. Would be nice if they snugged up a couple inches to really ride the body.
I agree with you but what they cost, I think they’re a great option. I’ve grown to really like them. Great for the kiddos.
I couldn't stand the anticipation of scraping my mustang when it was lower/had a body kit, I imagine this is exactly the same but with a truck haha. Lift it!

-20 offset is way to much for stock you need a 2inch lift and a CMC I needed that to clear the frame with a -18 and the same size tire

Should have added 3" bodylift along with suspension lift, but most people think just having a suspension lift will do it which wont, if the dopey manufacture toyota would design the fenders to where they are much more open in front & rear corners of where the tires rub there would be no need to trim fenders or do cab mount chops at all.
How did the gas mileage get affected?

The negative offset is the killer. I have the TRD pro same tire no rub but it's factory offset that's probably the issue with yours.

Unless you're a one dimensional driver on flat surfaces only. 33's will not fit on tacoma without a 3 in. front lift. No exceptions. No cutting or trimming needed.

Yep. I think that’d do the trick… now I just need to find a reputable shop around MD for the cab mount chop.

i would cut that plastic right out of there, if your that OCD then your never gonna go off road anyway, you can fit 37"s with a 3" lift on a tacoma, sure you have to cut and chop but nothing comes without paying a price. if you want more of a lift you can do an AAL in the rear and spacers on your coileovers, rear shocks would need an extension kit which is cheap and easy. I'm putting 35"s on my 2nd gen with a cab mount chop and getting rid of anything that rubs.
The real flex here is running your engine while doing a tire review video.

Pros look so much better stock in my opinion. I don’t understand why people buy the Pros and do all these crazy lifts and bigger wheels to it. They could have just bought the lower trims and use that extra 10-15K to built it the way they like it. Bigger wheels and lift is going to make your ride even more sluggish and bad gas mileage. Worse is the people who buys 4x4 and think it’s cool but don’t even know how to use it. 🤦🏻♂️But I guess money is not a issue for some people.

You shouldnt buy a TRD Pro and swap out the OEM suspension (or Wheels!!!). That would make you a Badge Poser. LOL.. If you can return the tires and get a size smaller., do that.... its not worth beating up the truck over.
TRD Pro VINs will always yield the best resale. Plus you get the unique color option. =]
@@UntamedMotors my point is, some people get a TRD pro just for the name plate, then swap out the TRD pro parts. Don't be that guy. If you remove the parts that make it a TRD pro, you will lose resale/Trade value. Any dealer will tell you that.

I have dressed it up quite a bit with more OEM TRD parts and a Toyo 3/1 level-lift, but kept the 2 main parts that make it a "TRD off road". The shocks and wheels. Are there better shocks and wheels aftermarket? Of course, but I wanted to stay true to the trim package
