I was roaming Balboa Park before a wedding and this three piece band caught my attention. A small boy with an upright bass, a bespectacled giant with a mandolin, and an unassuming girl with a harp. They call themselves The Wrong Trousers. Talk about odd choices in musical instruments. But they have tremendous talent. Their style won't be everyone's cup of tea, but there's no denying they know their instruments and are comppletely unique. These kids are still in high school! A good size crowd had formed and they were getting lots of cash donations.
It's been 14 years and I still think this is one of the best things on UA-cam !
2021 and this video still slaps.
I wonder if these guy's are still playing, I remember when I first started looking at youtube this was one of the first batches of cool covers I found.
1thess523 They're just not the same after they got rid of the original bassist.
1thess523 they are, especially the mandolin player (in the middle) right now. Plays shows in L. A., working on a dope music project/band called "Fenway" . The classical harpist has an album or two out and still writes I am sure, she is currently heading up a department of the crowd funding site GoFundMe. I'm not sure about the upright bassist. I'm not sharing their names in case the would prefer anonymity. Good, talented people though.
Michael Philip Reed hi, bassist here! I play in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra
@@fitzbassNU Amazing!!
I seriously love everything about this performance. I love the girl's imperfect voice. I love the use of the classical instruments. I love it!
See, and I think her voice was perfect.
I’ve been going back to this song for about 10 years now. I think it’s so special to contrast the original song with this cover. The original song relied so much on electronic music and is used as a symbol for an entirely new way of listening to music while feeling nostalgic for an age that just passed. This cover was done by a bunch of kids who probably weren’t alive when the song came out, playing entirely acoustic instruments and their video of them just busking somewhere went viral at the beginning of UA-cam - so, like they transformed the song and accidentally recreated it’s message for a new era.
I miss these good ol days and UA-cam of this era. Magical
You've got to just love that harp solo. Keep up the good work lads!
I hope this stays on here forever. It's one of those things you can go back to and smile. I like the original song, but love this cover.
Steady on lads. I'd love to see them reunite and remake this.
Johnny Cash singing "Hurt" By Nine Inch Nails is perhaps the greatest cover that exists, but this is a very, very close #2.
That kid on the mandolin has a perfect voice for this song! Great job!
Haven't been here for ages. Still the best version i've heard.
You guys have done a wonderful job with the song! This is a GREAT cover!
This is still awesome. I love watching them play.
Brilliant control over the intruments, and they work together very well too!!!
this is one of the best covers of the song! the unusual choice of instruments is perfect!
I always forget about these guys and randomly remember and search and search to listen to their songs. It frustrates me beyond belief when I forget the name of "The Wrong Trousers" I love this group. Fucking amazing.
Yeah, I finally made it here after an hour of frustration trying to remember the band. I even remembered Trousers, but I searched for the wrong trousers instead of The Wrong Trousers. Just have to hear this ever couple years. Would be neat to see a studio recording of this, or a better filmed live version.
Man, it must have been frustrating to keep finding the wrong wrong trousers.
Sure. Let me just hop in my time machine, travel back to 2006, and reshoot this live performance with professional grade equipment.
Awesome response
You had professional grade instruments..
@@sleepystrawberry8036 Did you read the video description? I wasn't in the band. I was just in the park that day.
Still listening in 2021
This is a fantastic ensemble. That fine-picking mandoist actually has a fine voice. Singing outdoors (unamplified) can really take a toll on one's larynx. The harpist's little glissando and back-up vox were adorable. Great work.
TIP'EM LIKE CRAZY!
these guys are amazing!!!! as much as i love people who play guitars, i cant help but love when people play less popular instruments and make it work like these guys do!!!!!
There's a Canadian band of the 70s named "FM" in which the violin player also frequently played mandolin... in case you're curious.
That was a brilliant version of the song. They gave the a rawness that works really well. Sometimes the best performances have mistakes, if you listen to an album enough times you realise the mistakes are what define the album. Great 3 piece performance.
Fucking AMAZING!!! I've been playing mandolin and banjo for almost a decade, and you're pretty good. The solo at 1:10 was amazing, especially the way the run on the harp ended it and worked it back into the vocals.
Your voices work really well together.
I just love this version, at so many levels.
This song killed the internet when it was posted. 🤙
2 years later and I still love these guy's.
These kids are all in their 20's now.
yeah, now a bunch a geezers.
+James Offutt i miss 2006, 2005, 4, 3, 2, 1............................GO!
The bass player is in the Seattle Symphony.
completely adore this and the harp/bass/mandolin work so well together
been back for the last 5 years to watch this.. still think its super B
same, love it
me 2
Raw sing like no one is watching. Pure love of music and the tune Very well performed and fun to watch. I'll give a 9.5 and hope they will play at my wedding in 2013!
When I shot this video they had been out there awhile. Her voice did crack a lot. It's not a distortion on UA-cam. She was just fatigued.
They're great! I've loved that song for almost 30 years (sigh), and they nailed it! I hope to see more of them in the future.
Thanks for posting this!
You guys are cool. I love how the biggest one among you's playing the small guitar/banjo, and the smallest dude playing cello/bass?, and then of course your Harpist has this super sharp voice.....Geeez that sure does look like Balboa Park in San Diego :S wierd.....PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THROWING MONEY AT YOU GUYS! GEEEZ.
Really enjoyed that! Very talented guys - totally original format. Never seen these 3 instruments played together like that. Especially on a song that was a synth-pop classic! Well done
hahah well done!
great job! you three in wrong trousers will remember this forever!!! great job!!
2019 anyone?
Nope
this is the most awesome thing I have ever seen. Good on them for this. I hope they still are playing somewhere.

I used to want to play upright bass so bad, but I thought that I was too short. This kid has convinced me otherwise. :D
THERE NEED TO BE MORE BANDS LIKE THIS.
I love you!!!!!!
The shrimp with the bass now plays bass with the St. Louis symphony orchestra. True story
Good for him! He's a talented musician.
Hey The Wrong Trousers! I hope that you read my comment, i'm french and i saw this video and your myspace and i can say that you earned a new fan in France!
I love your music! and the instruments are so originals!
To finish a little message in french!
Bonne chance les Wrong Trousers pour votre carrière, plein de bisous!
Still listening in 2023
Who could not like this? Bravo. Y'all were great. I am a singer and just got back from a gig and in my worn out state I clicked on this as a friend posted this on Fb. Glad I saw it. Don't let anybody tell you different...this is a smile maker. 191 dislikes? Those people are fools and don't know jack about music.
that bass is BADASS!!!! wished ppl still played it that way
2 months ago a video went viral about a family making a cover about this song but immediately I remember this video.... People, it was kind of hard finding this video in 2020 but' I luv this cover
I've joined UA-cam yesterday and this video is just impressive
Hey, I can see this video is one and a half years old but WOW, I love this guys!!!!
Watching this made me cry out of fear for these youngsters future.

Oh dear algorithm...and so we meet again
Nice to see the youth of this country has appreciation for good old pop songs.
Well done!
I ordered their album just because this video and it's GREAT! GET IT!
That was brilliant. I absolutely loved the harp solo, you don't get enough of those in this day and age.
We are still together. The bass player we have now was the original, while the kid in this video was the interim. Our album is coming out this month with this song on it.
2021 and I’m all about this energy. Brings me back.
and a harp and an upright bass are absolutley huge!

So much power and positive energy. I like it
The harmonies are very good; both the lead boy and the girl have very good voices:) A good arrangement too.
Because they were so awesome!
You are the coolest kids at your school. You are the coolest kids at any school! Wow, you have put a smile on this 45-year old face. I really didn't know anyone under 40 remembered this little classic and what a wonderful arrangement you've come up with. Count me very impressed!
The same thing happened to me. The Wrong Trousers are so good that they make me lose all bladder control and then feel a compulsive need to donate money.
Remember watching it in 2009 when i was 11 lmfaoo now im 25...still think about this everytime i play the original vice city.
I can't even describe how awesome this is.
This is awesome!
for 3 middle school kids it was really great. good work

I can't stop watching this.
Bravissimi!!! Very good, a wonderful version!!! Hi from Italy!
I thought it was cute. Their imperfect voices make them sound all the more charming.
A reminder to us all that music can be fun.
Props to these guys, just... WOW...
This has made me so happy I can hardly speak!!! I LOVE them!
Genius. Love these kids.
I get a feeling these kids will be great entrepreneurs...very creative.

Looks like Balboa park in San Diego, great energy, keep up the good work and this seems like a lot of fun too! Great musicians for their age! That harp player blew me away!

She's a great singer, you should buy their CD.
So far this is the best cover of this song i have seen, but there is another one of them where her voice doesn't crack on "You are radio starararararararar".
You guys are awesome. That was amazing..please play another good oldie.(Dance Hall Days)
Smart talented kids doing something original..I like it
This is so awesome. Totally makes my day.
