Hey a lot of these people thought this was too long. I enjoyed it and learned about voltage levels for resting and charging batteries. Thanks brother.
I agree... my 02 mustang won’t start after sitting for a few months and I’m worries it’s the alternator or starter... now i know how to go check as soon as I get home
It is too long. Consider the audience: frustrated people who just want their car to start, not bored people looking to be entertained
I mean, if your in an emergency trying to jump your car, you probably just need him to get yo the point.
Personally I was looking for something longer than 2 mins
@@funnyfoxbirdyou probably don't need to be on f****** UA-cam if you're in an emergency with your battery dead.

Thanks for making this great video easy to understand, Not just for men or women, but also for dogs as I am a 10-year old golden labrador trying to start my little car. :)

Great video demonstrating from a car that won't start, in addition to also testing the alternator. Many videos showed cars that started from the onset.
Nice video. I've fought this battle sometimes ago and overcame it. Your video made we had a clear picture of what went wrong and how to overcome it in future. Thank you
Thanks! Super helpful for those that don't know cars in how to check which might be the issue when you only have one car and jumping the battery multiple times isn't an option
I liked this video. It was easy to understand and doable for a non-mechanic, not too complicated. It helped me a lot because I know none of this and have a dead battery. I feel like I can figure it out now. Could it be shorter, a little, but the detailed information was great for me. I feel like a mechanic now haha. Thank you!
Good video very straightforward no nonsense approach. I had to go learn how to use a multimeter 😅 in another video but very quickly diagnosed my bad battery and verified that my alternator is fine. Which is interesting since the dealership replaced my battery less than a year ago and now it’s bad. Well I’m replacing it myself this time with a brand of my choosing. Thanks for your help made my day. Thumbs up 👍
Watched a lot of vids and learned a whole lot. But THIS ONE, was the one. Thanks sir, this was huge! 🙏🏿
I had this very issue with my Dad's 2000 Ford Expedition yesterday morning, except that at attempted start, I got the "machine gun" clicking from under the hood. Checked & cleaned the terminals & connections, and had no corrosion. Checked voltage with a MUCH less expensive multimeter (yes, one of those free ones from Harbor Freight, back when they still did freebies...), got the same 10.5 volt reading. Decided to throw a battery charger on it, but after quite some time (overnight), voltage was only up to 11.5. Jump started it this morning with my Mom's truck, and confirmed voltage on the battery was 14.6. Same diagnosis - one bad battery.
I had left the truck running, so drove it to my local O'Reilly Auto Parts, and found out the battery was only two years old, and still under warranty! Woot WOOOT!!! The Assistant Manager and I had them swapped in about five minutes, and the warranty on the new battery reset for another three years. Boom!!!
Now a lot of folks might turn their nose up at my cheap multimeter, but for a free item, and on something as simple as this kind of a reading, it's ideal. Heck even at full price ($6.99 + tax) it's inexpensive enough to keep in my truck tool box just for situations like this. I have a service regimen on all of mine that I change out the batteries in each of them at least once a year.
Really enjoyed your video, it was an excellent tutorial on how to diagnose an issue with easy steps to follow.
Aloha!! 🤙🏼
As a woman who needs to learn how to take care of my own car problems, you explained things very well, so even “I” could understand it.
Off to buy my multi meter to check my battery first. Thanks for the great music, video, and instructions

The reason the vehicle wouldn't start is because the Battery had "one" Shorted Cell , that's why he was reading 10.5 Volts.
Batteries have " Six" Cells.
2.1 Volts per cell , thus 6 Cells Times 2.1 Volts = 12.6 Volts , a well Charged Battery.
If he was a Mechanic , this wouldn't have been his 1st day going out to buy a Battery.

Same here. I am a single woman with a new grand cherokee that has all the bells and whistles. My worst fears came to fruition the other day when I tried to start my car, remotely and manually both and it was completely dead. I had anxiety attacks for 3 days over it.. thank God my son in law tested the batteries and the alternator. It's the alternator. This video is wonderful for women who don't know cars! Good luck to you!
Nice job ladies
Great job ladies! I’m in the same boat. Just popping my hood makes me anxious! But I’m gonna give it a try. My car still runs, but struggles to start, especially when not run for a day or two. Think the battery needs replacement.
We’ve got this ladies!! 😊

If you use a device like a "SUNER POWER Digital 12V Car Battery Tester," you have the additional capability of analyzing the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). If it shows the CCA is below what your vehicle needs, the battery is bad. This is a great indicator of the batteries performance. For those interested in the math, electrical Power-in-Watts = Amps x Volts. So, for example, if you need 6,000 watts to start the car, that means the 12-volt battery must have 500 CCA (12 Volts times 500 CCA = 6,000 Watts). And if you buy a more powerful battery with 550 CCA, the voltage can drop to as low as 10.909 volts and you can still start the vehicle because 550 Amps x 10.909 Volts is about 6,000 watts.
thanks for sharing. had to break out my old multimeter that i bought in my 20's and brush the corrosion from it's battery terminals, before I could use it on my truck! lol. Once cleaned, I was able to test the dead battery on my truck. Good tips!
I appreciate your explanations and the time you took, I have this exact situation. I have a multimeter and can jump start my car, but would like to know battery or alternator. Thank you!!!!!
What's multimeter??
Thank you for the detailed instructions. Love the science behind your steps. +1 Sub. Keep it up :)
I enjoyed your video very much.It was informative and most enjoyable. I learned a lot. Thank you and best wishes.
Nice and thorough. I think my battery is going and soon to be gone. That's a handy little gadget. Cuts out the guesswork for sure.
Excellent video you made it very easy and explained it for all to understand especially the voltage thanks brother
this happened to me this morning.. thanks for the vid man..
I know that this is from a few years ago but a couple of tips for those who wanna stay safe: always wear gloves when messing with a battery, that corrosive stuff is bad news for the skin. Also never use a car to jump a larger vehicle like a truck, it can drain the car battery life and most likely won't have enough power to charge the larger battery. Otherwise you did a great job explaining the process of elimination.
Emphasis should have been how you tell abad alternator 😅
I have that same multimeter and I've used it for about 10 years never gave me problems even after leaving it in my toolbox in subzero temps. LCD still works and everything.
Good video
I really enjoyed this video, I don’t know nothing about cars or have cared but this video made reconsidered that. Love the explanation, I understood everything
Although your primary concern was to restore operation as quickly as possible, the battery might have been saved with a desulphation procedure. At least, checking sulphation might have provided a cheaper option than battery replacement. Batteries which simply "go bad" for no apparent reason are at the end-point of sulphation.
This happened to me yesterday; visited my partner's clinic to visit and got stranded in the parking lot. The battery was shot because my alternator was only cranking 12.4 volts after running strong for 9 years. I try to learn as much about how a car works and general maintenance as I can, but this was apparently something I had to learn the hard way. Thanks for the video though!

Now that homesickness is passed...
I plan to replace a second alternator. (The first replacement had bad diodes.) I will also get a new battery. I am at risk of missing the deadline for the emissions test for Wisconsin because of these two items.

Very well done. Thank you. It will be a big help for me. Keep more videos posted. Cheers !!!
Everybody’s talking about the car stuff and I’m so distracted by how adorable your baby is 😍✨
Cool, I just had to do the same thing, but the alternator was what was wrong with mine and it made the battery go bad too. Replaced them both and my truck works great again! 👍🏽🤙🏽
Thats usually what happens, junior. The battery is ok but the failed alternator weakens it and then you replacing everything.......happy motoring!
You so right, Mr mush mouth could have made a 5 minute video out of this without all the unneccsary b.s.
I hope I can do this next !!!
I know this was 5 years ago, but those 2007.5 Silverado’s had issues with the battery terminals, I chopped mine off and installed military spec terminals.
I also upgraded the alternator to a 350A, and an Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle Battery.
Those modifications fixed that Silverado until the day I traded it in.
Great and humorous video! A fun an informative video!
Definitely a big help. Just used this video to diagnose my 2008 gmc Yukon xl. God bless!
10:45 is a prime example of paying attention to how the old battery comes out. If he had connected the cables at this time they would have been reversed and could have blown a main fuse or worse. However a few seconds later you see the battery turned the opposite (correct) way. Good catch and save sir.
thanks for pointing that out ! 👍

Yeah i did that and think i damaged something real bad
Great video, all in one place.
Glad to see you have a couple of sidekicks to help you out! Won't be long before baby will be doing it all, lol
Thumbs up. I have to replace my battery tomorrow but ill test the alt first. Thanks.

Alternator OR Battery:
BATTERY: Car dies>> you jump start>> turns on>> you drive fine>> turn car off>> wont turn back on
ALTERNATOR: Car dies>> Jump start>> Turns on>> Drive car>> Dies while driving.
PARASITIC DRAW: Car dies>> get a new battery>> turns on>> is drained and dead again after only couple months/weeks.
how can you find out what the parasitic draw is?
Not always the case, as it seems that a defective new battery can cause it to die while driving
so when a new battery dies form parasitic draw is it rechargeable and reusable or a new battery is needed?
CY4B3R SK4R fucking straight forward thank you so much
Thank you so much
Another thing I like to do when changing my battery is to write the date and mileage on the battery.
Very typical of people! Focusing on the wrong things!😭

Very good video brother. You forgot something though that happens often. Even with an alternator that charges, 14 volts can have a bad diode that when engine is turned off drains a battery, and this is why most people that change out dead batteries end up with a change of their alternator within about a week, but they think (being most mechanics dont even know about diode common failure)is that it just sort of happened that two things went wrong. Have a parts store check your alternator diode before you go buy a new batttery

Thank you so much for this video it helped me out a lot on my 2008 Silverado
Thanks for the video. Was having the exact same issue.
Hey ! Great video !
I have a question: On my vehicule, alternator output voltage is 14V when engine is running but battery voltage is only 12,5V.
Few minutes after battery voltage decreased to 12,2V. So the alternator is not doing his job.
What you need to know is that the alternator dates back to just a few months and supply 14V.
I have done an electrical continuity check between alternator and battery and it sounds good so wire is not broken.
I have done the same for fuses box and everything is OK.
I don't know what to do. Do you have any idea which could help me please?
Benjamin Heder Did you test the battery by itself with the voltmeter only not hookup to any of your car battery terminals?A good battery with all of it cells are still in good working conditions .The battery by itself only always read 13.7V to 14V not hooked up to anythings.Below that one of your battery cell is weak and its slowly dying.
How come 400 people disliked this 😅 it is good information for

Nicely done, thanks
Im having this problem with my car im hoping its the battery and not the alternator but this video has really helped going to pick up an alternator test kit this week and buy new battery fingures crossed haha
The best way to test if your battery is bad or alternator is when your car is running disconnect one of the battery terminals if it turns off its your alternator
Someone just did this and mine kept running but they say my alternator is bad. Is that possible?
@@arebee27 no , have someone check your battery voltage first or take it to a auto parts so they could check your battery first
Thanks, as a women who didnt even know where the alternator in my tatta indica was, i learned a lot now. My previous battery with a two year warrantly, sudden did not show the number which it suppose to be at my garage. Then they say it is the alternator, then the guy said that he push a plug back in the alternator and the car start again. And off i go back home, very thankful, and praising God. Vryday morning, when i start the car, it did take. After lunch i start the car nothing at all. Now, i am not married, i am staying in a security complec whereby everyone is at their work places, but luckily for me, i found one man and one very old one, at that stage, they tried to kickstart the car, nothing happened. So i phoned outsurance my insurer, and they send a young with jump starts, the small one which he usually use, is broken he said. So we try the charging, nothing happens, the two men explain to me iro the colours on the battery, my battery was standing on the last colour, i think the no colour on, which was a indicates that the battery is sóoooooo dead. Then we took a battery out of one of the men's car, and put it in my car, and it start strongly, so that was not the alternator. My brother doesnt felt sure that it is not the alternator, which is very difficult to replace because there in no tatta dealers left in South Africa. So i went to builders and i bought a small rechargeable charger which can be charged in the cigarette holder or be charged inside my house. Must i buy a tester for the battery too, i got the charger now. Please help with advice.
Great video with detailed description.
I was driving down the street and my car stopped. Wouldn't take jump, cost me $125 for a tow. Took the battery our & took it to Auto zone got the battery charged, car ran well/long enough for me center the car in the garage, then conked out again. I'm afraid to get another battery charge, don't have the coin for these tows and have yet to have the alternator checked. I'm going to "gamble" it's the alternator- have it replaced, maybe change the serp- belt and hope I don't go broke, in the process... I also had a burning smell before the car shut down again, for the last time. My neighbor says alternator,
I dunno what to think.
I believe I could take the alternator off myself to be checked or buy 1-id those du-hickeys(but don't you need power) to check the alt?
I'm not risking-tryna get a charge or jump to go A-Zone again, to have both components checked (only) to have it stop again.
I was (not in a mean way) hoping you had alternator problems, just so I could see how you handled it. The symptoms you had
(clicking starter), I had, as well. but your Problem was easily solved
w/a new battery. My battery is only 2-yrs old yet, was drained when I took to "AZ" to be tested.
Recharged battery ran for 5- mins. Then stopped again
I'm in a quandary ..
gee davis I feel you brother. I turned on my truck it idle roughly for a second and it stalled on me. I thought it was the battery so I replaced it with a new one. Just yesterday it happened to me again. I’m going to check my Mass Airflow sensor and if it’s clean then it has to be my alternator.
@@saulreyna72 Sorry, for the slow reply. I took some time off from the internet...
I changed my throttle body myself.
Now, I'm about to embark on this journey to see just what the heck is wrong w/my car. Hoping it's just the alternator (I gotta guy)😆.
I'm going to A-Z or Walmart & buy a tester- tomorrow.
Sir, just replace your bloody alternator and take in old alternator so A.Z. dont charge you a core charge, end of story!
Thanks for the great video! Where do you put the positive end of the multimeter to check the alternator voltage?
very informative..thanks man ! much appreciate.
This video summarised.Get a Multimeter. Check the battery voltage. Jump the car to get it started. If the multimeter is 14v when the car is running the altanators fine.
I wish it was the alt. I really want to watch that be installed properly.
Thank you this video was very helpful!
Great video❣️ Thank you so much 🥰
how do you measure the voltage directly on the alternator? you didn't really show how in the video, would be useful to know as well
Make a video of how to detail your silverados engine bay
Hello. Nice video indeed. May i ask, check on the video at 6:42. The moment you connected the other battery to the one that couldn't start the truck, the voltage on the multimeter was supposed to rise to around 12 volts as it is a parallel connection. Yours just stayed at 10,76 volts. May you explain why.
Thank you.
Thanks the information was helpful. I am having a similar problem on my 2006 Chevy Colorado. Every now and then I have to jump start my battery so let me get my meter out and check those things first so this way is not a waste of time of buying the wrong part.

Get to the point, too much fluff
You didn't like that truly non-repetitve unobtrusive sick beat every 20 seconds? Or was it that you thought you were clicking to watch a useful how-to, and not vlog drivel?
That 3 sec. intro was torture... Oh. I fast forwarded when I got to that 3 sec. mark.
People here are actually watching to attempt this and want to follow step by step
Not too much fluff for beginners! Some of us appreciate the step by step details!

11:58 just purrrfrct. need to wait till you see that! Because I actually say that. Lol
Hey man - Great video. Would have loved to see how you tested the voltage coming from the alternator.
Very helpful, thank you!
Do not buy Duralast batteries. Also the battery terminals should be in the same position as the original battery. Also always check the manufacturer's date on the battery to make sure it was not sitting on the shelf
Are those voltages the same for all vehicles or just your truck?
Basically for all
