My 1964 rambler automatic transmission had a front and rear pump, the driveshaft drove the rear pump and I could compression start it at 4 or 5 miles an hour it also had an enclosed drive shaft, limited slip and front seats that folded down literally flat with the back seat, so you could sleep in it camping etc... they were one heck of a car!

One time I had a dead alternator.... I drove the whole way to the shop in reverse, with (thankfully a looonnnngggg) set of cables connected to my boys car... I had no way to tow it and the mechanic didn’t have a tow truck or wanna let me use his jumper box to get there. Well I got it there. 😂 wasn’t a fun time we had maybe a foot at best In between both cars, had to drive the exact same speed and make sure we didn’t crash. Halfway there we actually swapped spots. It was harder to follow then actually drive in reverse because the following car has to keep up to match speeds of the car in reverse and make sure they break in time and time the see there’s slack on the cables.prob shoulda just linked 2 sets of cables to give us more room for play but the only time we lost connection was in the main ave making a left hand turn, thankfully though the shop was right there and my boy was able to roll halfway into the lot lol. Then the shop owner said “if I knew you were gonna go threw all that I would have gave you the jumper box to use” 🤦🏻♂️ I asked him 2 times. Told him I’ll give him 200 just to hold till I got back with it and he didn’t wanna let me use it. What else did he expect me to do when he said “if you can get it here in a hour I’ll do it today if you get here after that you’ll have to wait till Monday..... I was running outta time so it was by any means necessary

A not uncommon problem is the neutral safety switch on the transmission which does not allow the starter to turn when the vehicle is in gear. So if your battery appears good and nothing happens do this before you start pounding things. Shift the transmission in and out of park to try and reseat the neutral safety switch and if the car starts you know you need to replace that switch. Just try to swap out with a relay for a noncritical function like windows or audio. If you have a dead battery and it is cold warm the battery up by turning on the headlights for a minute or two. If it staterts determine why the battery was low. Low battery problem may be worn out battery, bad alternator, loose belt. A common problem is the battery is fine but the starter will not turn or just hear the relay clicks if not getting enough power because of poor battery cable connection at the battery. Remove and clean battery terminals and battery posts. If it starts now you have found and corrected the problem.

My dad had a full service-service station/garage for almost 50 years. Haven't heard the word "commutator" used since then. We used that word often when diagnosing/explaining that problem to customers. We were the first ones in our town to sell Interstate Batteries, sold more batteries ("legitimate" battery sales) than anyone in the state of Texas.
THE most common cause of no start is bad battery connections. Always check that first, make sure terminals are clean and tight, otherwise doesn't matter if your battery or starter are working perfectly.
Actually, in my experience, the solenoid was the first thing to check. Back in the day, a simple test was to put a screwdriver between the solenoid terminals . If it kicked over then it usually was a bad solenoid. NO reaction a faulty starter . However, I can't say if modern cars would like this with the computer and sensors although I have tried it on my truck with no ill effects.
You can pull start certain vehicles with automatic transmissions, provided the transmission has a rear fluid pump. Examples would be most Mercedes cars of the 80's with the 722.x series transmission.

I'm impressed that he thinks that you can catch a modern car in gear to start it. You CAN'T. Only way the engine will fire is with the clutch depressed, can't catch it in gear that way, can you ?
Great tips indeed, i wanna know how to start automatic dead car battery (by mistakenly i turn on the fog lights in the morning and went to a jungle i left the fog lights on unknowingly and now my battery got damage, i left it on the whole day and came know only in the evening that when i came back to go home, i saw the fog lights were on n battery got damage too!! 🤦
I subscribe to your Channel based just on this one video. I don't know anything about cars, much less anything about how to jump-start a dead one. But, wow, your explanations were so thorough and easy to understand that, should any of my friends end up with a car that won't start, I'll be able to help them out. Thanks so much.
Best trick I ever learned in auto tech school was form my electrical teacher. If you’re stranded with a dead battery and happen to have aspirin place on in each cell and it will give it the last Frankenstein jump but don’t turn that thing off until you reach a auto store.
@@relevancethereal2936 Either way. But most newer cars won't run at all if the battery is dead or too weak. The older cars I grew up on, you could take the battery completely out and the car would continue to run.
I am glad to learn about this kind of problem. IF I learned BEFORE call the mechanic, I wouldn’t expend more than a thousand dollars. The mechanic “changed for a new battery and the car is dead again after 1 week - AND I didn’t drive it since the car was “fixed” 😢
You should try the horn FIRST. If the horn doesn't work (which it always should even with the key off) you have a loose battery connection and the battery and starter MAY be fine.
So what happens then when a battery cable is loose? Will the car start? This happened to me when I was driving. The car went dead, I pulled over. I tried the horn no horn. I popped the hood the positive was loose I tightened it the car started.
Thank you so much. Something about how you explain things and what you explain is so perfect for my brain. I’ve never learned so much so quickly. Something about the order you choose to speak on and how much you explain the mechanism is perfect for me. Never felt it make more sense then when you explained it. I can’t explain how clear that felt to me. Thank you pal.
I drive a manual because it's more fun to drive this is just a bonus especially when you don't have lights that auto off I've had 2 popstart my car more times than I'd like to admit
When bump starting a car, turning the ignition key to engage the starter just before depressing the clutch gives an extra boost of energy. This has started many a stubborn car that wouldn't start on a bump alone, especially when I was on my own 🙂
You must be kidding, if someone without much auto mechanic knowledge and can start their car after following your recommendations, I will be quite surprised! A non starting vehicle is one of the hardest problem to diagnose in my opinion, particularly with nowadays fully computerized models without a computer hook up. I have been working on car for almost forty years as an amateur, my last job was a service consultant for a major commercial truck dealership, and you know what, no computer no proper diagnosis.
I push my car with right foot while i half sit on the driver seat, with door open and when the car get some speed, i jump into the car, put the gear on 2nd gear and release clutch while closing my door. I do that often because my car has a parasitic current draw and i often forgot to turn the key off. Now my right foot is bigger than my left foot (sorry for my bad english)
It could also be the Neutral Safety Switch on an Automatic Transmission. Often, shifting through the gears, trying to start it in neutral or simply holding the Shifter firmly into Park Position will do the job. Common in older vehicles.
You also forgot to mention to check the IMMOBILIZER/alarm system.... i had a car that wouldn't start (no crank or sound, lights and horn are good), changed the battery, checked the fuses, swapped the relays, whacked the starter, checked the ignition switch, etc.etc. but couldn't get the car to start. Eventually after much probing and after seeking professional help, it came down to a faulty immobilzer module. Wasted half a day figuring it out. Hope this advise/tip helps someone out there. ;)
Unfortunately on mine, the security light was off (faulty module) which is why i didn't suspect it to be the source of the problem. Case to case basis sometimes... some symptoms may differ from what others may have. Good luck to everyone out there with starting issues... just have patience (swearing and cussing your car may also help relieve stress, lol 😂).
@@CaneSugarCane yes :) there is actually one morr metod , where you jack up one wheel , and and spin the drive wheel with some rope ( or something like that ) , aand it should star ( but please ask mechanic about that metod , i am not good at explaining it )
I watched your video, and got a big screwdriver and tapped around looking for the starter motor which I couldn't see. I turned the key in the ignition and it started easily. What I had done while watching your video was to carry on the battery charging for 30 minutes on the Fast charge setting for the 12 V. This in addition to the normal speed charging that I had already done but heard a rapid click sound - was what was needed to fully charge the battery up. The battery needs to be fully charged up by the charger in order to start the car, and needs the full 12 V. I disconnected the charger in order of mains plug, negative battery terminal, live terminal. I used an old Absaar battery charger, for around 4 hours charging total on a Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 standard engine.
Great info you're a great and know mechanic, I work on cars as well been doing it for 20 years, not sure how I ran into this video but you are exactly correct great job bud!👍
Lol ! You CANNOT catch a modern car in gear to start it, the clutch has to be depressed before the computer will allow it to start, he's full of shit. Anything before mid 80's, but newer cars cannot be started this way. Find another hero
Not a modern car, since mid 80's there's a switch preventing the engine from firing up unless the clutch is depressed. Safety feature they ALL have and have had for decades
Omg...when you were talking about the lights on the car should dim when you try starting your car, my freaking phone dimmed because I'm down to 5%...that's sh*t was crazy man! The synchronicity was dead on! Wow!
Good info But I have push started automatics. Just have to start out in neutral then put it in 1st or second gear once your speed gets up to around 6 MPH in first and 10 mph in second. I subscribed. . Good info. TNX
My old Honda Element and my not quite as old Subaru Outback could do that. I just put either of them in neutral at the top of a slight hill and as the car starts to roll, turn the key, should start, then without breaking, move from N to D... (Your instinct will be to put your foot on the break as you turn the ignition key - don't hit the break or the gas for a second, just let it start while you coast in neutral - now switch to drive and THEN you can break and/or gas.
I suggest that we get a multimeter to measure the battery voltage to know its exact condition. The multimeter costs only about 10 dollars; it can be used for many purposes including checking the battery and alternator regularly.
I was hoping he might give us some real tips on how to start the car with dead battery but he’s super powers are something we’ve known for generations 😂😂😂😂😂
True Harry, but that's only for us older farts that never had money, and drove cars that u could actually see the starter from topside. And the batt cables were visible as well. Now u can hardly find the dipstick on cars, there's so much stuff up there.
Excellent educational video. However, a very misleading title, as well as a misleading introduction. You only showed one "trick" to start without jumper cables. Which isn't truly effective as manual transmissions are rarely put to use these days. So anyone else is still screwed stranded somewhere, even after watching this video. Please improve your accuracy of the content you provide and avoid click-baiting in the future, it will benefit all of us viewers as well as your channel.
I could swear this guy said he was going to show us three ways to start a car with a dead battery or bad starter. I only saw one - the drift method, which is as old as cars themselves. Nuts.
I like your take on this. however, a completely dead car will need some power to the computer to push start it. some alternators need some power before they can get excited enough to produce power. in other words, some newer cars cannot be push started unless they have enough voltage for the alternator to power up. But, most cars can from my experience. Great Video.
If he's your mentor, you're screwed lol ! Anything built from the 80's up has a safety switch so the vehicle WON'T start unless the clutch is pressed. Unless you disable the switch you cannot jump start a later model car
@@joebalser9921 Lol whilst that may be true in many parts of the world, luckily, it does not apply in my region/country. Even Vehicle models +2004 still do not have the safety switch.
@@kn520 fair enough, I hadn't considered the vehicles in other countries. That's the way they work here though. Something else to consider when trying something
If you got a weak battery or parasitic drain and no money to buy a new one just pop the hood and disconnect the negative terminal every time you hop out of the car . Might seem like too much for some but it will save that battery until you need it to start the car again save for a new battery
There is usually more than one relay just like the starter relay, so you can use one of the other ones to start the car and then replace it so everyrhing will function.
Information good to have when facing any one of the problems you list. I would suggest a safety disclaimer at the start but anyone not knowledgeable should know better. 2 👍👍
I do know that automotive starters can draw hundreds of amps. However, the relay is not supplying hundreds of amps to the starter windings. The relay supplies power to a "starter" Solenoid, which in turn supplies the starter with the high current directly from the battery, in most cases. The Solenoid is basically another relay that can handle this high current. Always a good idea to check that the relays you interchange have the same part numbers as you imply. Hope this helps. Thanks
If the relay same number will be same voltage amps everything else you can also save time not risk paperclip to wrong relay spot by prying off plastic cover of relay and touching relay metal together should make car start
That is a great idea if the problem is a bad relay.... if it is a bad igntion switch, bad neutral safety sw, bad wiring on coil side, bad computer, etc... that will not work...
Wanna hear something surprising? My battery was dead, and wasn't charging with my cables. I knew it would eventually, so being late at night, i decided to leave the cables connected to my friends battery for a few hours while catching some quick z's. Even though his engine wasnt running that whole time, my battery still charged and with a lot more power than it usually does. I never heard of that before. My friends car still started as his battery was unaffected. I thought that was amazing. Anyone ever hear of this working?
I used the pop a clutch start for evil. when I was younger we lived in a cul-de-sac at that was up hill. so when I would sneak out. instead of starting my truck and giving away my exit. I'd roll down to the end of the street befor popping the clutch and driving off for drunken teenage adventures .

Crushed it ooor a full tablet?
@@relevancethereal2936 Either way. But most newer cars won't run at all if the battery is dead or too weak. The older cars I grew up on, you could take the battery completely out and the car would continue to run.
Also in the old days we didn't have sealed batteries, each cell had a screw on cap or three at a time push in plugs on a plastic bsr.
All good info. I encourage all watching to study the systems he's talking about and try these things before an emergency. Good job!
I am glad to learn about this kind of problem. IF I learned BEFORE call the mechanic, I wouldn’t expend more than a thousand dollars. The mechanic “changed for a new battery and the car is dead again after 1 week - AND I didn’t drive it since the car was “fixed” 😢
A nice beginning. Then there is the one about using a screwdriver to short that battery positive to the solenoid right on the starter itself.
You should try the horn FIRST. If the horn doesn't work (which it always should even with the key off) you have a loose battery connection and the battery and starter MAY be fine.
Not true. A horn needs 5A (amps). The starter motor need 5000A (surge current) to start and 500A (CCA) during cranking.
@@suggesttwo But you could be testing voltage and grounds when all you MAY need to do is twist a terminal and tighten a nut.
@@russwelday Current is measured in amps. You response is nonsense.
So what happens then when a battery cable is loose? Will the car start? This happened to me when I was driving. The car went dead, I pulled over. I tried the horn no horn. I popped the hood the positive was loose I tightened it the car started.
@@russwelday you car doesn't need the battery once the engine is running. Unless there is a problem with the alternator.

Best laugh I've had all day! Except for Biden's first press conference when he said he'd been in the Senate a hundred and twenty years ago!
You and Eric at SMA are the BEST!!

You got that right.

Good luck to everyone out there with starting issues... just have patience (swearing and cussing your car may also help relieve stress, lol 😂).

all the basics from my teens days lol, very good video that everyone can agree on and make sens of things,,,thanks
You’re a top bloke! Thanks for the tip! Saved me earache from the missus!
@@joebalser9921 you can of you press the switch on the clutch, dumbass.

I'm sure someone must have mentioned this but you can also put car in neutral, push it till it gets going, and then pop it using first gear
Not a modern car, since mid 80's there's a switch preventing the engine from firing up unless the clutch is depressed. Safety feature they ALL have and have had for decades

Holy crap that's the first time I've seen a Pontiac G3 since I bought mine. Love that car!
Good info But I have push started automatics. Just have to start out in neutral then put it in 1st or second gear once your speed gets up to around 6 MPH in first and 10 mph in second. I subscribed. . Good info. TNX
EARLY GM Powerglides and Hydromatics.
Yeah so essentially neutral dropping the trans. Quick way to leave it in the middle of the street.
I was thinking about the solenoid on the starter also but if you start hitting the starter that would take care of it.
I suggest that we get a multimeter to measure the battery voltage to know its exact condition. The multimeter costs only about 10 dollars; it can be used for many purposes including checking the battery and alternator regularly.
I learned a long time ago to keep one in the car grate idea lex

I like this guy.. he has a lot of knowledge.. thanks man.. u helped me out a lot in past videos

Great ideas and helpful lessons.
Thank you very much.
I could swear this guy said he was going to show us three ways to start a car with a dead battery or bad starter. I only saw one - the drift method, which is as old as cars themselves. Nuts.
I learned a whole lot from this video, thank you!
I like your take on this. however, a completely dead car will need some power to the computer to push start it. some alternators need some power before they can get excited enough to produce power. in other words, some newer cars cannot be push started unless they have enough voltage for the alternator to power up. But, most cars can from my experience. Great Video.
9:20 sounds like starting a vw golf mk2 1.6 diesel
Made by the same company. Most likely it's the exact same motor.

The ratchets people use around my hood give Chlamydia, have ten baby's, and never work...oh..nm different ratchets.. nevermind
Don KiksBiscuits or it might be easier to pull the fuse for it from the panel if you can access it from inside the car.
@@diedonner299 that works too
Doctor Evil looks way more compelling than fake Superman...I will be using this for evil.
Thank you very much mechanics dont even know about bypassing starter switch
Smart guy. I've had to do these things when I was younger and couldn't afford to fix it, wire under the hood.
There is usually more than one relay just like the starter relay, so you can use one of the other ones to start the car and then replace it so everyrhing will function.
Information good to have when facing any one of the problems you list. I would suggest a safety disclaimer at the start but anyone not knowledgeable should know better.
2 👍👍
Just swap the starter relay with the one next to it on that car. Most vehicles have multiple relays that are the same
Thank you, you are the only one on here who has any me mechanical knowledge
182QKFTW i wouldnt think so. Do you know how many ampere a Starter relais has to handle?
And he has avocados. No lie. I seen them myself. Great video again!
