I wish I had learned all this at 18. That first sound at begin of video happened to me yesterday! I believe it was the starter! I was lucky enough to have a mechanic come out the grocery store and I should’ve asked if I had a dirty solenoid or if my starter need the banging to release the pin (the jam?). Anyhow, I’m thankful that people like you make videos like this! It’s so important. I get frazzled when I’m vehicle doesn’t start! I feel panicked! Worried!
I just had a single click from my 99' Crown Victoria LX, new battery and cables. Starter may be bad then. Thank you for being clean and clear on your troubleshooting video! Stay safe!

I've listened to a few of videos about this issue and yours was the first that was direct and descriptive for me to understand. I normally don't comment but I appreciated your video.
Thanks, a lot of other guys were overcomplicating it, I just wanted to know what one click at the solenoid/starter meant and you answered the question simply and logically, thanks again!
Holy smokes! I think you just solved what's wrong with my motorcycle. The battery is brand new and everything lights up BUT the bike won't turn over. Instead, it's making the rapid "clicking sound" you mentioned which makes me suspect that it's the relay, not the starter. I already ordered the starter, and it's not hard to put in, so I will swap them both out.
Thanks Sir for the info, My starter delay wasn't getting enough juice from my battery, so I cleaned both connector, who were too rusty, and boom it started like a new car. Thanks again for the info and thank you UA-cam.
@@dreambigbigger1622 dirty throttle body, anything doing with choking has to do with either air flow sensor or dirty throttle. 80% of the time. Unless you already had issues then it could be anything like bad mix ratios or blown sensors.
You are an absolute homie. I need to replace my battery and solenoid because my lights and everything are dim, and the clicking is rapid and at the top of the engine but very faint. I applaud you my friend, 10/10 from a friendly Canadian 😊
For people that are having problems like this, another trick that works to know if the relay has gone bad, is to jump the two bolts with an isolated screwdriver (0:50), if the starter works, the problem might be the relay itself, a fuse that controls the relay, or the "s" cable that sends the signal from the ignition key to the relay itsfel. I'm currently waiting on a friend's tester to see if my S cable or relay is my actual problem. Starter working just fine.
Man.. thank you - just replaced starter and came out next day to straight clicking. Then tried again and had the fast clicking. Just changed battery connections. Now I know I most likely need a new battery. Thank you!
Thank you so much! My solenoid in my 1969 mustang was making the rapid clicking and i thought it was just bad. Sure enough, I charged the battery up and fired right up.
you know, my grandpa just mentioned the jam to me last night. i replaced my starter yesterday since i replaced my alt recently, and it started to click on the first start of the day, or just sitting for a couple of hours after i replaced it. it didn’t start at all 2 days ago, and he told me it could be the bendix not coming out fully or i didn’t wire it correctly. hopefully that’s the problem i just can’t check cuz of hurricane ian. love and appreciate the video!
It's funny you say that because we have since sold that home and we live full time on the road and spend most of our time in Florida and Yuma Arizona. So we did trade that cold day for something warmer. LOL
All your tips were good but you forgot one of the most important tips. Corrosion .001 thick will cause the same thing as if the starter is bad which there’s absolutely nothing wrong. I’ve experienced this problem myself a few times troubleshooting vehicles . Clean both battery post and starter hook up and cable ends
So I’m having a clicking problem with my 2004 Honda accord ex 2.4l I’m getting multiple clicks but it starts rite up , 9-10 times it doesn’t and makes this weird eletric sound but then I turn the key and turn back and it starts
Thankyou so much!!! My f250 was randomly not starting and I didn’t know why. It did it again and my wife needed it to go to work. I watched this video and noticed it was locked up. Used a ratchet on the alternator to get good leverage to turn the belt and it started right up🤠
Great video although just for your record the hammer tap trick on the starter only works if you have 2 people. One in the driver seat to start the car and another guy underneath the car tapping the starter with a hammer. If it was only you there then obviously it would not work because you need 2 people!
For me I just bought a 1999 Chevrolet 1/2 ton 5.0 L conversion van at an auction and had to jump start cause of cold weather. Had to continue jumping with a jump pack til finally turned over. Temps dipped below -0° and went to start and nothing but a rapid click. The heat, radio, and electronics turned on with no issue so I believe it's a solenoid or relay hopefully which it sounds like
what if it clicks and then starts, i just got a new starter on my car and now im freaking out bc it clicks and starts; sometimes it clicks multiple times but not rapid before starting..

The problem I have is, 90 f150 I have the battery charged, the key is off when I hook up the negative post the motor cranks. I think if the key would be on it would start.. because of the fuel pump. Can you tell me what is wrong.

Check for the most obvious and simple first! I had installed a new battery 6 months prior. Now all I heard was a fast clicking sound. A jump start worded but seem to not hold a charge. The + and - had no corrosion and showed the battery terminal protector paste to prevent corrosion. However went checking the cable connection I was able to slightly wiggle the cable on the + side. The bold felt tight, so I used a wrench to really force the bold till the cable connection on the battery would not move at all. Next stated the car without any issue.
I get the same one click, but when I slightly turn the engine over manually with a wrench a few times the car starts right up. What does that mean? Bad starter? Starter to close to flywheel?
My car makes a click noise as well when i turn the ignition (I’ve got a micro car 50 km/h) So I think it’s the starter what jammed or broke. But the car stood still for years so I’m going for a new engine. (I don’t want to replace the starter and a month later another get engine part breaking).
I had the same problem and I went underneath and I disconnected the cable from the battery to the starter and cleaned all the corrosion even though there was a cap on it and it worked it lasted about a year and now I'm starting to have a trouble again so I cleaned it again and bought some grease hope this helps somebody before they go and replace their starter
when I go and turn on my Infiniti g35 all my dashboard lights come on headlights come on and I hear a single click but no engine crank is that the starter
Not sure if anyone can help with this. I recently had my starter motor replaced old one was making a whirling noise grinding like hell. Working all fine until all of a sudden it stops (FYI should mention the issue first arrived when I was replacing my coolant expansion tank and did not secure a loose pipe which caused some coolant to seap into the engine bay) I hear a single click when I turn the key (I assume the relay) but nothing more. Few hours go by troubleshooting and more testing jacking the car up to potentially finding a culprit and not finding anything all off a sudden the motor is working again. Almost 2 months later same thing happens again. Couple of days later messed about with the battery’s connection and suddenly the starter works again. I could be stupid and this could be a case of corrosion causing the problem but it seems to inconsistent for it to be that any advice would be great!!
