10-minute Off Grid Cabin Build!

- We will show you our journey of the building constructing a small rustic live-edge off grid cedar sided log cabin built by a group of friends by hand. This is how we built a small cabin in the woods on a small budget. We will show you how we hand dug our post holes to hold the cabin up, right up to installation of the custom built front door, all using a portable saw mill. You can see the whole built including full commentary here: • BUILDING a Small Cabin...

This cabin build is something my brother and I really wanted to do ever since we were kids, playing around in the forest, coupled with whatever materials we had from the local infill to build all sorts of forts. Now we build a full habitable cabin
First we start by digging in reclaimed pressure treated posts by hand using a shovel.
Next we cut and harvest dead-standing cedar and pine trees for the structure including the 2x4's, ridge beams, and sidding.
We must use battery powered hand tools because there is now power at this location in the forest.
We use reclaimed windows from a house demolition and install a used fireplace.
The roof is supplied by Vic West and goes up quickly with screws that have rubber gaskets.
The door is custom build using cedar.
The deck is held up by pine logs (dead standing) and covered with cedar.
Season 2 will cover more of the build including the interior and outbuildings for things like off grid power.
As always we are using our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill.

A big struggle with our cabin is keeping it warm using natural materials that are inherently leaky. So we really need to close in all the gaps.

Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

I've wanted to do this my whole life. If only I knew it could be done in 10 minutes I would have done it years ago. AWESOME build guys!!!
We should get a group togeather of people who want to do this and do it.
My plan is aframe
It didn't literally take ten minutes to build, that's the length of the video. It's heavily edited.
@@jb-nn8sk congrats, you figured out the joke
@@jb-nn8sk No dude. You missed the joke...
Yeah editing is great isn't it lol!
This was interesting and calming to watch, and the ending with those 2 beautiful kids playing together its heartwarming, thank you for this video and good job on the video, time well spent watching!
This is an actual realistic build unlike the videos where one guy builds a cabin out of pallets that magically appeared in the middle of the forest.
Hammers, chisels and saws don't grow on trees either lol
Nor steel sheets for roofing 🤣
Be crooked as heck when wood dries out
It was already dry wood of death trees. Don’t you put some insulation in walls an roof
Yes sir I see a lifetime of fun and friendship in this house. Thanks so much for sharing.
All is well that ends well Chris enjoy your cabin you guys have put in a lot of work in the making well done.
Looking forward to new videos 👍👌🇬🇧
Fantastic job gentlemen ! Time well spent . This inspires me to one day build a cabin with my family ! Great video ! Enjoy !
Few men with hammers nails & saws tamed the wild. Beautiful!

The Wooded Beardsman can’t wait for the next one!
What the slab sizes of the cabin
😎
You guys make that look WAY easy. Great stuff and looking forward to seeing more!
Do you have a video of you staying in it? I can't seem to find it on your channel
Loved the puppy that ran by in his coat at 6:15
A cabin in the woods out in the middle of no where would be paradise to me
Definitely not ASMR but I love it lol
Wow all weather lumberjack carpenters, legendary effort people.👍✌️
Incredible video. Just some hard working guys going to town on this awesome cabin. Love the fact there was no music. Thank you for this.
My wife and I watched every minute/episode. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the house is beautiful. We plan on building a guest house just like it but it will be more Pine than Cedar. Thanks again for sharing and hope y’all stay warm in Canada!
I watched the series as it was happening, it was fun to reflect back on that project in a condensed form.
Many hands make light work. It is nice to see family and friends working together to build a cabin. Very lovely.
We LOVE your channel!!!! We have less than 7 months to complete the tear down of the old 1840’s home place along with its companion barn, get them packed up and shipped out to Montana to begin the up-cycled♻️, off grid cabin build! We can’t thank you enough for all of the awesome ideas and fantastic content here on your Instagram page- we can’t wait to incorporate some of these ideas into our upcoming build! There is nothing more magical than building a new to us home to live in that was once lived in and loved by someone else so long ago! If those walls could talk! Thanks again for being such an amazing inspiration- April and Jeff
What an awesome built! Gave me some ideas for a cabin built of my own..
I absolutely enjoy everyone of you videos
You guys are a great family
Don you and your sweetheart have done an amazing job 👏
Its great to have friends and family with tools and know how.
Great cabin and excellent to see everyone enjoying it at the end.
love this in anticipation of my own build. I have such great vibes from this video - the use of existing timber is perfection
Short but sweet, and when you're two years old, you get to break the "ASMR rule". Keep'em coming!
Full stop. Crazy how all that fit into 10 min. Looks great.
The exterior wall is really cool lookin with those wavy planks!
your work is amazing and thank you for sharing the work you do
.
I love the door soo much with the etched window & antler handle!! It really be the little things ❤
I’ve watched a few of your videos now and enjoyed every minute. Especially the cabin build. Just finishing my own 12x16 remote cabin as well. Only wish I had built it when my girls were younger. Some of your ideas I’ve used myself. I pretty much built it from donated, or next to free, windows, door, wood stove and items from and old pop camper(propane stove and sink). Even have 2 bus seats for a booth, Lol. There’ll always be nay sayers about how we may do things but I’d rather listen to those who have something to contribute. Cheers from Newfoundland.
Congrats for doing yourself a cabin!!
Only took 10 minutes to build this cabin. Nice work!
Takes me 2 mins only
@@little_gymbro5539 and that's including the 12pk
Play it on 2x speed if you want to build it faster
Genuine video, I really like the main character❤
Sheeeiiiit!!!! These guys know what's up! Just bust it out! Damn. Nicely done. That mill was awesome too. Wow. Watch and learn.
This was an amazing series! Thanks for filming it all! #fullstopsquad
Wow. The antler door handle topped it for me. Well done.
WOW how cool is that! Cozy little house middle of no where💯I love it!
The fact it only took him ten minutes, this guy is insane!!!!!!
Having a lot of hands available really helps with many of these tasks. Love this. Really nice work on this cabin.
Unbelievably talented. That cabin is stellar. Something to shoot for I guess.
Great job guys , that’s a goal I want to do with my son ,thanks for the ideas!
Hey bro, what’s the life expectancy. Because the timber is not treated, how does that effect the life of the build?
Exactly what I was wondering.
Thompsons water seal is a wonderful thing.
@@plainandsimple1 water seal? can’t say I’m familiar, does that act as treatment for the timber so it doesn’t rot and decay over time?
There's nothing under that sheet of tin . Looks like they taped up some insulation , but there's no plywood , no moisture barrier or trusses . Might be an open air cabin at some point .
What about wood splitting ( expansion and contraction) especially using 2 nails per board.
That was so satisfying to watch that i feel like i built it myself 😊
Great video, actually liked the little ASMR break at the end. Loved the whole series, looking forward to whats next! Keep it up sir
This is amazing! Every man's dream. Building a good man cabin. Well done 🍻
That's so true!
Woman here and I love it too!
Full stop, it's amazing to see how far that cabin has come. Keep it up!
Absolutely gorgeous!
I like that deer antler handle
I love the wood building, I like whole process build the building. I'm so happy now.
Ok I was so amazed and entertained by this build. And THEN I saw that precious baby at the end. Was it just the camera angle or is she one of the tallest 2-year-olds I've ever seen???
If she's as tall as she looks in the video, that child is going to be an amazon when she grows up!! 😲😍
I subscribed after watching the full build. I'm impressed and envious! Great job!
You are an inspiration. Enjoy. Very well done!
I like the atmosphere of your place. very entertaining.
I love watching these videos
What amazing job the talent it takes and what a dream for so many others thank you for sharing
This is the best thing i have ever seen. Wonderful.
Pretty damn cool. I need more friends that have some skills.
I wish I have one of this little cabin somewhere in
the woods, and just watch the snow come down
Dude, I just happened upon your chanell this evening (05-07-23). You've kept my interest for for hours; what a great presentation.
These guys who send in negative comments don't deserve your time.
Originally from Detroit now in California. I've been asked if I miss anything about Detroit. I replied sure, the CBC.

Great build! In Australia because of the humidity and dew point. We would have to place glass wool insulation with sisalation under the roof tin. Otherwise it would be raining inside!
This is a great series keep it going!
Amazing, even better yall built a livable cabin in 10 minutes I can’t even set up a tent that fast yall are good
Such a great project.
The camaraderie
Great Video!!! Thank you.
good editing for people who missed the segment
full stop great once again.
Building mine next week. Awesome cabin
Only thing more impressive than that awesome cabin y’all built is that nobody said a word the whole time. Great video!
I like the looks of the live edge lap siding. Was thinking maybe a diagonal ship lap base siding underneath for shear with the live edge outer, regular horizontal ship lap for interior walls. Goal is to mill as much as humanly possible myself on site.
I don’t think this is asmr but it is cool
Love it 😀 great job guys👏👏👏
Great video, thumbs up !
Nice! Love this series.
Absolutely awesome build guys
Love it, more please.
Thanks for the great video. You motivate me and make me wish I were right there doing this now.
Perfect thanks needed that
Wonderful segment!
Pretty cool. I would like to see a much longer video of the same build. You know ... step by step so I can use it as a complete guide to do the same.
He has videos that go way more in depth into other builds
There is a 3 hour version of this video on his channel
@@fathaar Thanks Jordan
Retired builder here. This is really neat - love it- great job! Why use reclaimed pressure treat? You're having to transport it to the job anyway so why not use something (new) that will last as long as possible?
Sick I like you bringing out the saww mill in the woods
really nice. cant believe it only took you 10 minutes to build. cheers, -jerry
Very organized
Nice little cabin.
I've seen a lot of diy in my life but if you're happy then great job buddy.
Very impressive ❤ this makes ma want to pack my things and move into the woods
love the antler door handle!

Love the live edge for the shingles
Nice built 😎 love the sawmill
I'm love the life in use😍😍😍
Very, very cool. Thanks!
Man, I would love to do this one day
Asmr for real men who actually build their houses with their own hands
Ah yes, now I’m going to build the dream boy mansion in my back yard
Haha! Hell yes.
What is a real man in your opinion?
Ah dammit all these fake men who haven’t built their own houses, couldn’t be me
*for real people
Woman here for inspo to build my own home with my own hands
Love this, nice job!
Got the tingles at 2:21
