It was good to have something that you both could enjoy together. It was hard for him and probably even harder for you. I hope you have found peace in your memories.
So many "Build a cabin in the wild" videos just have music...Thanks so much for voicing this video. appreciate you telling us the stuff we might not know. 1 thumbs up
Can we just take a second to enjoy the time he spent setting up the camera angles? It would’ve taken him probably half the time to finish this project, but instead he chose to make some nice, satisfying content for us. What a guy.
Not only is this cabin build entertaining to watch, the video is also relaxing because the guitar music in the background doesn't interfere with the narration- it supports it without being too loud or annoying. Bravo! If Bob Ross built cabins...
my grandpa just passed away yesterday - the man raised me and was basically my dad - after a dark 24 hours all i wanna do is watch dave build this cabin video again. Thank you dave for bringing peace and relaxation to us all.
Dude I loved watching you. My father-in law talked me into building a 1500 sq ft ranch in 1985. He taught me all I needed to know. I went on to build a 3 stall garage with a beautiful wood shop. I still love the work but at 68 I can't work those 12 to 13 hour days anymore. Your talents will provide you with a very rewarding life. Don't forget. Jesus was a carpenter!!!
Here I am at 83 years of age, and you have fired me up to give it a try. I hope my health stays good enough to do so! Of all the videos I have seen on You Tube for this sort of work, in my opinion there is none to compared to yours. I am happy to have found your channel. Thanks so much.
At 75yo, this I enjoyed immensely… with nearly 20% energy left, I was able to see it all yet again …. You made my 45 minutes of dreaming come true … thank you!
This entire video just feels of life's simplest pleasures. A man in the woods, building himself a cabin, with some narration that sounds like a string of letters sent to friends and family, and some quality. You sir, seem like a great guy to get a beer with.
Ok, pardon me, but I have city girl question. Are there any black bears in that area? If so, while he’s away, can’t they break through the big wide windows and destroy his place?
i watch it sitting on my recliner wishing i had the motivation to do this. BUT i have built 3 tree houses for my kids in the past ten years. My house is in the woods.
Very rarely these days do I come across a UA-cam video that captivates my undivided attention for a full 40 minutes, without getting distracted or pausing whatsoever. This video was definitely one of those occasions, loved every minute of it. You’re living the dream, amazing job on the cabin and the video!
You’re absolutely right. I just realized that I clicked the video and watched it in its entirety without pausing or putting it on my “Watch Later” list. That’s how I know this was a masterpiece.
i can’t even imagine taking on this sort of building project never mind filming and documenting the entire thing with this sort of quality. i’m extremely impressed.
Havent finished the video yet. All of us women are envious of someone having an amazing man like this. Hope his wife was encouraging and hopefully assisting in some way.
oh my gosh! I loved "you can nail a lot of boards together for $600 a month!" I've been trying to explain this to my family for so long but never knew how to put it into words. I'm moving to my land in January and really have never built anything bigger than a birdhouse (in 3rd grade for 4H). Everybody keeps telling me "Why don't you just get an apartment?". So I've been deemed the crazy lady of the family. Thanks for being an inspiration!
Please chronicle your build journey! If you do, comment back with your channel name. I’d love to follow and see what you do. Good luck crazy lady 🤓 I’m rooting for you!
Everybody tries to validate their just “rent” something small or a small mortgage etc concept, let me tell you there’s nothing like paid for land, and building as you go, the feeling of accomplishment and the freedom of no payments! It feels amazing
Pst almost nobody has access to land to do this stuff except for people already well off. This is the outdoor version of kid rock, just a rich guy pretending to be an average guy
@arianna wait till you find out that these guys lie a lot because this makes them money. a quick google search tells me he got money by flipping real estate
You need to watch his section where he tells you how he lived to get started, the work, risks, and adventures that also prepared him and his wife to compete on the Alone series.
I have lived totally off grid since 2015. I built my own cabin in the mountains of WV. Watching your video I learned so much. I hope things are going well for you. God's Speed!
*The fact that you just woke up one morning and built this with your own hands and no help, it’s absolutely astounding!* Fascinating to watch you work! You should be very proud, it would take me 100 years to figure out something like this 😅🤔😊

This is not only an American dream. Ever since I was a child and first watched little house on the prairie and Calamity Jane I wanted to live how they did. I remember watching this video on TV with my grandpa. He had been a hard working man throughout his entire life and he always loved nature. He really enjoyed watching this with me and said that he admired you a lot for building this cabin and wished that there would be more hard working men like you. Good job sir, whenever I want to remember my grandpa I come back to this video.

This was absolutely awesome... Watching from beginning to end was really enjoyable... It took me back to my days when I used to Frame Home's for a living.. That was back in 1984 to 1991 when everything was stick built.. None of that way over priced Pre-Fab junk that comes on a truck and goes together like a model car kit.. 🤣 And they call themselves Framer's.. 😂 But you endured the weather ☁️🌡️ and got it done.. And say to yourself:: Man , God is so GOOD 👍 I pray that you are able to enjoy every moment for many years to come.. 🙏 Thanks for all the work you put into making your video so we were able to enjoy your experience...
Your "bit off more than I can chew" part reminds me of a time when I was working on a heavy Inline 4 and removing it from the frame while the bike was still somewhat assembled. I didn't realize how heavy the engine was until it was partly out of the frame and teetering/about to fall off and I was at such an awkward angle, I either had to give up, or let it drop. I let it drop. Luckily everything was fine lol. My hat is off to you sir, I thought building a motorcycle was hard work, this is a whole 'nother level.
@@Bushradical You should have a stud near by to help support the wall as you push it up, then at least it won't falll on you. Be safe and great work! you can nail the stud in with one nail, so as you push the wall up,, the stud pivots and digs into the floor as you go .

I came across this video by accident. I started watching, and I COULD NOT stop watching. This was so relaxing and satisfying to watch. Loved seeing this no nonsense, practical aspect to building a cabin. On To Part 2!
.... you stole my comment before I could post it ... oh well thanks ..... no intention of building a thing here though but enjoyed this man's zeal for constructing that captivating little cabin ......
So, I know it may sound weird, but me and my father have been just going in the woods and making cabins for anyone to use at least a few times every year for the last 3 years. It’s hard work, but also a good bond for me and him, as well as the community. We don’t know much, but we do know one thing: this country needs more generosity!
This video was so satisfying to watch. Cold weather and a safe, warm place to snuggle up in….this is one of the most hearty, content feelings in the world. I’d love to see a follow up video, once you get the cabin filled with furniture, just getting to see you enjoy the place for a day and night.
Meg, if you get the chance pop over to Brooke’s (Bushradical’s wife) channel ‘Girl in the Woods’ and watch the video ‘Spend the night with me-blizzard at the cabin’. You’ll understand what I mean. Unless you’re here mainly for the practical reasons of how to build, which is fair enough.
Great job kid! My wife and I own 2 acres of land in the Allegheny mountains. I cheated a bit by parking a 36 ft RV on the land, but I built a canopy and deck around the RV. All pressure treated lumber. It looks amazing. I am a retired contractor of 45 years. I truly enjoyed watching you work. Thanks for the video. Gods best to you and yours.
As a man who has been building structures and doing side projects my entire life, I truly can say. You sir are one hell of an American and a master craftsman. You made so many things in this project look easy, especially for those of use that know better, and can truly appreciate your work. Thank you, sir. You did one hell of a job and documented it all for us to appreciate. I applaud your efforts my man. Well done!
I have always seen myself as one with a short attention span. I always seem to skip around videos to see parts I want to and what not. But there is something about documenting the outdoors, and building something with ones hands, that just takes me to a different place. I watched the whole 40 minute videos without thinking about clicking off and watching something else once. I would like to thank you for the incredible job that you’ve done on the cabin, and on the video. Your cinematography is outstanding. The subtle music in the background, and the cinematic shots of the nature around you really tie the whole thing together. Also the occasional story here and there are really something special. I hope the cabin serves you well and houses many good memories.
Great camera work and the subtle inserts of tools and birds and vistas, simply genius. Also the old tools worn by time bring their old world charm to this project. Also for me one the greatest bonuses, no cussing, blasphemy or disrespect. That is even after your Herculean attempt to move the first panel came to naught but then again brain beats brawn every time. Thank you for an amazing upload and I have nothing but respect for you dear Dave. Wishing you many amazing memories in your beautiful cabin in the woods. Take care and God Bless. From Cape Town - RSA. 💖
Along with the actual process of the project, enjoyed the heck out of your positive attitude and narration mixed with light instrumental music and the sounds of work, fire and nature!
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a video this much, we just built a house on 20 acres and would LOVE to add something like this in our back wooded land but no way I could get it done like you did. Wow.
So I’m sitting here, doing some sewing, while also listening to videos. I always have continuous play on while do a repetitive task. At first I was totally confused as to why the algorithm chose your video for me,…but I’m so GLAD it was! This is absolutely outside what I would normally chose to watch but I wish I had of came across your channel a lot sooner. Listening to talk so passionately and with such a positive attitude was so comforting and relaxing. I’ve found myself in a bit of a funk lately and have had this dark cloud of negativity the seems to follow me everywhere. Ive tried different things to bring me back to the world of positivity but nothing has helped. But after watching, mostly listening, to your video I honestly feel better then I have in months. You have no idea how much I’ve been trying to find even just a glimpse of some light at the end of the tunnel and now I do. Your attitude is so awesome, thank u! Oh if I could have reached into the screen to help you with the (pain in the ass lol) task of putting up the first wall I totally would have!! I was helping u mentally Lol😊

My wife and I live on two acres of land in New Zealand. After watching your videos I'm thinking of building a little cabin on our back paddock near some pine trees. Thank you Dave for laying out step by step how to do it. However it will take me weeks rather than days! God bless.
This is Discovery Channel level quality video making. I would easily watch a show about this kind of stuff all day. You just got yourself a new subscriber, Mr. Bushradical. I'm an engineer, so I'd love to actually build a cabin similar to this instead of doing calculations in an office all day. Something about using your hands to actually make something just feels right.
@@Someonelikekanye It is. Unfortunately in school we don't learn any of the hands on stuff. I can tell you all about the tensile and compressive strength of wood or any other material and how thick a beam needs to be to support "x" amount of weight, but the actual installation of the beam and how to use all of the tools is not covered. Most engineers are "self taught" in the hands on portion because we like it and that's what drove us to engineering in the first place, but there is no guarantee an engineer will know how to use every tool or know the tricks of the carpentry trade. I really like thermodynamic systems, and that's what I specialize in (think rockets and internal combustion engines) so other than the basics, woodworking is a very foreign topic to me. I know I could learn it, and that's part of the reason I'm watching these videos. To learn tips and tricks and expand my knowledge!
You would probably love the video of Dick Proenneke building his log cabin in alaska, very similar style of video to this. Its called "Alone in the wilderness" not sure if its on UA-cam or not but i Highly recommend it

I watched this video from beginning to end and I actually enjoyed and was gratified to the attention to detail and the care of building this home. Thank you for this video
You did the right thing. You tested the load, made a safe attempt, realized it's just to heavy. You stopped and listened to your body at the right time. Stay safe and great video.
My dad passed away suddenly this year, and I always helped him with projects when I was younger. So much of this video has brought back so many memories of the many house projects we did together; from the exact tools he had, to your little bits of humor throughout. Thank you, truly, for these videos.
I love you brother thanks for blessing us with this beautiful vid. You taught me how to build a beautiful and cute little cabin in case of emergency situations. I love you so much thanks big brother ♥️♥️♥️
This is probably the most straight-forward and easy-to-understand instructional that I've seen on cabin/tiny house building. Usually these types of videos have some combination of bad camera angles, coupled with other critical details missing. Not this one. Just about every last detail is clearly explained, and for those that are not (e.g. wood stain), he directs you to where you can find that info. I'll be using this as a guide for my cabin build. Bravo, and thanks!
I’ve seriously watched this several times and I’m living vicariously through this video. This is my dream, a place like this. Loved every second, nice work and thanks for sharing!

Just recently started watching your channel and your wife’s channel. I’m trying so hard to believe in myself. A 50 yr old female, that I can make this myself. I watch this particular video sometimes twice a day for encouragement. Saved the $, trouble finding a place that doesn’t have restrictions and I can camp while building. I absolutely felt the same, absolutely lovely and I kind of felt sad when the video finished. I would have loved watching for some more time, nice project, well put together, congrats
I love seeing the old tools still in use. There's something real satisfying about using old tools. I pulled out carpet and installed Hardwood floors a few years back in my house. I used an old ball peen hammer that was my Grampy's from probably 100 years ago when he was a machinist (I put a new hickory handle on it and use it often doing automotive jobs) but it got the job done (mostly used the flooring hammer but it was needed to face nail a few boards). Only later did I find not 1 but 2 Estwing framing hammers in the basement of that house.
The cabin is wonderful. But what I appreciate even more is the effort you put into the video itself!! Having worked in the TV industry for 20 years, I know how difficult it is to put something like this together. All the lovely cut aways and the attention to detail, the forethought for each shot so that the viewer remains engaged, and then.... The editing! That is no mean feat.
You know, I sit here doing a tech job feeling unfulfilled everyday. Watching this man doing something he loves and is proud of is inspiring to watch. Thank god for people like this that are willing to put in the hard work to keep life going for others.

I've just lost 40 mins of my time on a video that I loved. Thank you so much for posting this. I think that most of us would love to go back to a simpler time (well, I would anyway), and the thought of being cut off from civilization in a wood cabin, really speaks to me. Oh, and your video was incredibly well done. The commentary throughout and the occasional speaking shots to camera made it seem so much more personal.
It looks straight forward enough to be able to learn. I haven't built anything like this before, but I think after seeing this build that I could figure out how to do this. I would want to make it deeper and wider for the room to be able to do more in it. I may give this a try this year. I have several building projects to do this year and no contractors available to do them in my area. So if I want something done looks like I will have to take some time off and figure it out myself. I think once you build one thing then the next thing will seem less intimidating and possibly addicting. If you have the land the possibilities are wide open to you.

my grandpa just passed away yesterday - the man raised me and was basically my dad - after a dark 24 hours all i wanna do is watch dave build this cabin video again. Thank you dave for bringing peace and relaxation to us all.
Hello. So sorry for your loss. I also find these videos peaceful and relaxing. On top of that, educational and entertaining as well.

Ok, pardon me, but I have city girl question. Are there any black bears in that area? If so, while he’s away, can’t they break through the big wide windows and destroy his place?

So, I know it may sound weird, but me and my father have been just going in the woods and making cabins for anyone to use at least a few times every year for the last 3 years. It’s hard work, but also a good bond for me and him, as well as the community. We don’t know much, but we do know one thing: this country needs more generosity!
I like the idea. How rural are you? I ask because it's hard to find land that doesn't have an owner in many areas.

Isn’t engineering similar to woodworking? Also, is engineering similar to something like carpentry as well?

I watch this particular video sometimes twice a day for encouragement. Saved the $, trouble finding a place that doesn’t have restrictions and I can camp while building. Thank you, your family’s videos help my anxiety and give me hope when I feel like there isn’t any. I pray for your family and that I’ll be brave enough to try. Thank you! I also love that you use your grandfather’s tools.
i hope you're able to build it, tammy lee, best wishes 💖💖💖
I'm a 29yo woman with health problems, and all i can say is that I eould build the walls in multiple sections so that i have any chance of standing them haha! I hope we both find the courage to go out and undertake this sort of project.
Also 50 year young female I will be making my own and you will too 🤓😎
You can do it!!
Definitely a lot of love went into this project. The cabin is simplicity and that's the key. I enjoyed every minute of this. Thank you for inviting us to watch.
I think this is the 5th time I've watched this video and I still love it, it's so enjoyable to just watch him build and voice over the video
i've learned an awful lot about living off-grid from your channel, it's been really inspirational.
You and Girl in the woods are the hardest working couple I’ve ever seen. Very impressed by all your cabins and self-sufficient living. You are an inspiration to so many. Thank you.
I think I have watched this video about 30 times now. I am about to start building my own off grid cabin and this is the style I am going to do. Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing your knowledge.
Wow. I just stumbled across this video. You made my Sunday morning with a cup of coffee. Great work. I agree with all the other posts I read. Thank you.
My only regret is this video being only about 40 minutes. This was so soothing and relaxing. I enjoyed every minute of it! 😁❤
Who's AWAKE in 2021?
@@theyredistortingyourrhthym126 🙄😒🤡
This was peaceful and enjoyable to watch now I just wish he can come down to our land and build one for us. Would be a dream come true.
You know, I sit here doing a tech job feeling unfulfilled everyday. Watching this man doing something he loves and is proud of is inspiring to watch. Thank god for people like this that are willing to put in the hard work to keep life going for others.
I hope you find what fulfills you soon x
You are literally reading my thoughts out loud 🍵 We will find our paths soon 😉
I feel ya bud. Accountant at a tech company
I hear you. Software developer here.
You need to need to first fill your desires and things that you love in life. Afterwards the money will come in whatever way possible. My biggest fear is being stuff in an office for the rest of my life. I dread that thought everyday only 3 months away from college graduation.
Great Job! I loved and checked my own work schedule by yours. I was proud they're exactly the same. But I'm too far gone to get much done anymore. I'm 75 years old and broke my back in a 16' fall 4 months ago, then got covid while in the hospital and had to stay 60 days. You're and A+ builder and I enjoyed watching you very much. Thanks. Ray Moon.
I'm 74 and I'm dreaming of this someday...So sorry about your accident. Hope you've recovered well.
Stay fit and healthy Raymond
Stay safe and stay well
I was a carpenter for 14 years before transitioning to driving rigs. 17 years after driving rigs, I feel the urge to swing my old Craftsman straight claw framer. Your hammer brought back some memories! Great video and very inspirational.
Wannabeangler I hear ya,I did carpenter work also as a teenager and retired 3 years ago after 60 years trucking and now too old to do carpenter work but that work is very rewarding.Hope you can go back to what you like,10-04.
@@rogergroot8199 10-4 bud!
@@rogergroot8199 It is a self satisfying moment when you build something with your hands. I have assisted in many bridges in my area of Virginia and the feeling is pretty awesome when traveling across a part of history erected by my hands. A shelter falls into the same category.
I am also a trucker, but love to build things with wood in my spare time. I quite often consider quitting the trucks to become a full time carpenter, but I wouldn't like to do the general carpentry work on a building site day in day out, I'd like to do more bespoke one off projects. But leaving my life on the road behind is difficult!
@@mariosavva999 I can say wood working is satisfying for the soul. A sense of peace and accomplishment come when completing a project. But swing a hammer daily is best left for the young bucks. We can pass our knowledge easier through words and guidance.
The random algorithms brought me to you today, and I'm all the better for it! You are truly a skilled master of your craft, and I wish I had a fraction of this talent. I feel this is a lost art that people need to bring back to the forefront! Thanks for this awesome video!
I was a builder for too many years to remember. Thank you for showing people a very good way to build something for themselves. The main thing that you purvey here is to just get off someone's butt, quit making excuses, and BUILD your own cabin in the woods. I have a lot of respect for you young man and thank you for doing this.
I admire and envy builds like these. Wish I knew more about how to build things like these. Thank you for sharing.
@@1iknow what actually made you respond w that
Never too late to learn.

Simple . Go outside & try .
Wow Man American guys are so good when it comes to DIY, building. Great work. I save this video as a reference if I ever build somithing like this in the future...
I have never had my own home and now that I am alone and 72 years old, I would love to have a cabin like this to call my own. You and your wife are amazing! I binge watch your videos and enjoy the heck out of them.
I would build this backyard.
If you have a good church, some youth from there could help you do this. Great reward in heaven for them 🕊
i love this!
Same 🙂
@Fickle Pickle Come on, seriously? They're not offending anybody and they've got the right to practice any religion. Just because you don't follow the same beliefs, doesn't mean you have to criticise. Im an atheist and I seriously love the ideas that this person represents. Just, don't be such an ass to people that are trying to spread such positivity.
