Love it or hate it, the high school setting in anime is iconic in its own right. But that begs the question, just why is it that anime loves high school. The answer I found goes a lot deeper than you think, and stems from the very core of a huge social problem that plagues Japan - Overworking .
I hope you guys enjoy the video and have fun watching it as much as I had fun making it!

I had a lot of fun making this video. Between doing research and trying to get the facts right about the topic and balancing it between the emotional storytelling I was going for. I'm really proud of how this video turned out. Also I was horribly sick while recording some parts of the scrip, that's why I sound weird in some parts.
Let me know what you guys think of the video and have fun watching!!!

it was very well done as well but the random cuts where you shove in your OC is distracting and often breaks immersion. it's like one moment im focused and thinking about the topic at hand then the next i see a 3D model dancing and im like "huh?" and my brain throws an error

@@jesuschrist6878You're certainly not wrong. I look up to Terence McKenna and his work in this regard too. I do think there is truth and goodness in a certain social cohesion by having a certain amount of order, but that becomes corrupted if it's astro-turfed or enforced arbitrarily, so it's best if everyone gets on the same page organically. And that's easier than many people I see assume, but it's harder with the astro-turfed hyper-division running rampant today. I want to see more people accept harsh but universal truths about the human condition rather than giving their belief and faith over blindly to toxic ideologies and corrupt moral compasses. Here's hoping we get a leg up, everyone reading this. You all deserve it. Don't be too hard on yourself, but discipline yourself fairly but enough to get where you need and/or want to be in life. But above all - stop bullshitting yourself to hide from the truth, be unconditionally honest with yourself. That's the best general life advice I can give right now without typing an essay that I'm concerned not enough people will read and be affected by to make it worth the effort. Haha

Much of the technological advancement in East Asia are actually from South Korea and China in the past two decades. Japan was a technological powerhouse in the 70s and 80s, but Japan (as well as many other Asian countries) faced a huge recession in the 90s, that's when Japan's influence started to decline. While Japan is still, no doubt, advanced, it's not exceptionally so anymore.

The economic crisis was caused by a drop in birth rates that resulted in a drop in the working age population.
You can actually see this very clearly from just two graphs: Japan's GDP per capita peaked in 1994----almost exactly 20 years after a significant drop in the fertility rate, around 1974.

Interesting what you mentioned about isekais. I think that 20th century isekais are different from 21st century (especially 2010s onwards) isekais, since in the first ones the protagonist, at least, accepts our world as their home (with all its imperfections) while in modern isekais they despise and reject it: in the anime No Game No Life, the protagonist thinks directly about this at the end of the first episode, I think (he says something like "in the isekais, when the protagonist ends up in another world, he always wants to do anything to come back home... but who would want to leave a world like this?").

The worst part of the adult life isn't that paradox you point out about "no one telling you what to do, but no one telling you what to do"... but the fact that actually everyone expects you to do things, and do them in a certian way... but no one "tells" anything to you openly. The societal pressure to conform to expectations, unwritten rules, etc. never goes down. When you're a teen you just rebell, or whatever. Inside the little bubble where you're constructing your identity and your vision for the future you're protected from the real world. You spend most of the time in a walled garden with little real responsibilities and consecuences; one were rules are clear, but rather simple and explicit. As you wery well explained in the video, school is that. You spend most of your time away from authority figures (or around limmited ones) and ammong your peers; you can dedicate your time to things YOU like without having to justify them to anyone. And then you adult... and suddenly everyone gives you the stinky face if you're being "unproductive", if you have no material independence, if you choose a path that isn't giving you economic solvency, if you have no partner at age X, if you are too happy, not happy enough, if you have no kids at age X, if you haven't "made it yet", if you are failing at something, if you are not ambitious enough, if you are too ambitious... So, yeah... when you're an adult everyone "tells" you how to live your life, but no one does. And that "limbo" pressure is the worst, because you can't even argue against anyone, because no one is standing up and saying things to your face. Maybe that's why at some point we all end up having some kind of argument with our parents about "our life" and stuff. They are probably some of the few who will actually tell you things to your face; so they become the only ones that we can stand up to and get mad at. We probably tend to given them a lot more flac than they deserve, but it's because they make themselves a stand in for societal pressure as a whole I guess.

Also the reason why our parents tell us things straight to our face is because they generally do want the best for us, though sometimes it's based on their own ideas on what is best for us and not necessarily what is really best for us.
In my case, I've basically been an outcast for most of my life and I'm not about to stop yet, so in my case I've just spent a lot of time learning to not let pressures like that get to me and I'm completely at peace with being who I am, working to improving myself in the areas that I care about and realising not everyone will like me, a lot of people will in fact despise me and may not agree with the way that I live my life, look at life or the way I do things.
But ultimately I have to live my life and I won't let other people try to live it for me, even if it leads me to despair at least it's a hell of my own making and not a hell made for me by someone else.

This is a common misconception. While many people in Japan view their school years (which often does not mean high school) as having been the most "fun" in their lives, it's also relatively common for people to view existence as a process of lifelong improvement, which is where shonen culture originates. Some people in even their 70s or 80s still view themselves as actively developing their skills.
Many people in Japan consider middle school to have been the most fun in their life. For others, it's college, or adult life. High school is not chosen because it's the most fun overall, but because of other characteristics that make it useful for storywriting purposes.
The foremost one being that high school is simply the most relatable setting for most people. In Japan, 95% of people go to high school (the corresponding figure appears to be 90% in the US). It's more difficult to relate to a setting that you've never experienced in your life, and there's no job in Japan that 95% of people would experience in their lives, hence why high school serves as an adequate one to default to. It's also easier to relate to for adults than middle school, since high school students are more mature.
Mangaka and anime writers tend to have even less work experience than the average person aside from that pertaining to their own field. Which means that if they want to use their own experiences to write a believable story, they have to default to a school setting, or alternatively a fantasy world that allows for easier suspension of disbelief.
High school is also more useful than college because most people attend it out of a sense of obligation. Which means that a writer can easily justify collecting a diverse cast with varying skills, quirks and interests. In a college setting this would require more suspension of disbelief, since many people choose to attend specific colleges and courses that match their interests. And many choose not to attend at all---only around 60% of people in Japan attend college at any point in their lives. This means that certain types of characters are unlikely to end up in an average college----a delinquent-type character would generally not attend at all, an athlete might attend a school geared for their own sport, a medically oriented character would generally attend medical school, etc.
Another useful aspect is that high school students are mature enough to be usable as "adults" (i.e. you can justify an intelligent character acting very mature) while also immature enough to be usable for creating various types of drama. Adults are generally much more mature and stable, and therefore more "boring" / less useful in this sense from a writer's standpoint.
This is also reflected in anime in general---going back to the initial point, older characters are often treated as having mastered their trades, and as having reached a higher level of wisdom. These types of characters can be useful as mentors, heroes and such, but a writer would generally not want them as their main protagonists, because there is no growth to be depicted, and they are more difficult to use for cheap drama. Less mature adults can work for this purpose, which is why you do see them in some anime.
Anime viewership rates are higher among people aged 10-19 than any older age group. And while viewership rates are even higher between the ages 0-9, children of this age group tend to look up to high school students, which is why their preferences are not in conflict with the use of high school settings. The third most prevalent group in terms of viewership rates is people aged 20-29, for whom high school is a relatively recent memory.
It should also be pointed out that, while this appears to be controversial for many people in the West, in Japan, high school-age females ("JK"s) are seen as being the most attractive by males of various age groups. Younger men are also rather popular among women, though the trends appear more defined when it comes to male preferences. Similar correlations have been observed in Western countries as well (some studies show that men in the US prefer women around the age 18 or 20, and such studies generally do not include younger ages) though, so this alone would not explain the trends we see in anime.
On a final note, in terms of 4:49, the rates shown here show similar trends in age dependence in most developed countries, e.g. the US and many European countries. This is not unique to Japan. The points mentioned on work-life balance here are correct, but I don't see any evidence for them being the primary reason for the use of high school settings in anime.

    • @joshuatelem8796
      @joshuatelem8796 16 днів тому +3

Exactly, most anime at their core are about progression. Especially Shonen anime which is what kicked off the anime craze in America. Therefore, you cannot have your main character already be in their physical or mental prime or you limit the scope of your story.
Also, high school is an experience that most people in the developed world can relate to.

    • @Sykroid
      @Sykroid 5 днів тому

I absolutely adore this, because I have never seen this side of the "debate." You touched on how different cultures view high school, but also explained how a lot of it comes back to freedom of writing and literary devices.
Anyway, it's interesting to realize that so many mangaka are limited in the scope of experience they can pull from, and may be writing for readers that also don't have a lot of experience to relate with. This is true in any culture, but seems more prevalent in Japan. I'm assuming that even if a mangaka had more worldy experience to influence their work, it just wouldn't sell as well because it's not as relatable or comfortable.
So what do you think of how Japanese viewers see western media? Is it regarded well because it's so different? Or does it keep readers/viewers away because it alienates them?

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard 5 днів тому

@@Sykroid Western TV shows (海外ドラマ) are very popular in Japan. People tend to appreciate them in much the same way as anime fans enjoy anime, i.e. the differences in culture give them a unique feeling compared to domestic dramas.
There's even a dub vs sub debate in Japan regarding the optimal way to consume Western films and TV shows, with around 50% preferring subbed (字幕) and the other 50% preferring dubbed (吹き替え) according to online polls. I remember seeing some Japanese comedians talking about this on some TV show (I think it was Shabekuri 007) and the arguments that were raised were strikingly similar to those shared by anime viewers---with the pro-sub side arguing that subbed versions are better at retaining the emotion of the acting, while the pro-dub side said that they couldn't follow what was going on if they had to focus on reading (or something along those lines).

Imagine if every night you could dream any dream. You would spend 75 years of life everytime you fall asleep. What would you do in those dreams? Have grand adventures, harems, children, etc. But after a few nights of having dreams filled with absolutely everything you ever wanted, you'd start to want more, you'd start to want the dream to pleasantly surprise you. But if there are to be pleasant surprises there must also be unpleasant surprises. Rude shots. You'd want to stop controlling the dream in which you can do anything. You'd want to forget that you're having a dream while you dream. And in so doing, by adding more and more things that are out of your control into your dream, you'll eventually arrive at the same life you're living in today.

Unless you're stuck in an oubliette, which is a horrific way of torture, feeling good is a matter of perspective.
And this isn't even that unique to asian philosophy. Albert Camus famous work, the "Myth of Sisyphus", where Camus urges the reader to think that Sisyphus is happy, doing the same meaningless work everyday.

I can't even recall their names and I used to despise and hate them for all the crap they gave me for the flimsiest reasons that I did not have the capacity to control. Occasionally someone says they know me and I simply don't know them, to their chagrin or irritation. I'm an entirely different person now, even with the same name and body. If someone had fun in high school, good for them. That's all there is to it. Some people were happier then. I'm happier now. We both move on all the same.

I think one of the things you miss about high school is when you get stuck in your current life its so much harder to reinvest in things that interested you or complete past goals you put on hold. In high school I could do anything at any time and changed interests often. Now that I'm older and in my career I *can* change but it would take years to catch up to where I am now if I could at all so there's no appetite to do so. Fortunately I don't hate my job or anything but its difficult to find artistic outlets with my job being in IT it used to be fun that I had different logic puzzles every day and could think about new things. Now though, I miss the artistic outlet I had in high school with drawing/3d modeling, playing music, and writing. I put all of those things aside one day in college to really buckle down and dedicate my efforts to professional growth. I think that was the right decision but its been very difficult to pick those things back up and often times I have to force myself to make time for them. I miss how structured and separated high school was with morning activities lunch afternoon activities after school - dinner - hw - free time. These are all things you could potentially block out for yourself but its hard when you work and might work late or have crunch times when your schedule is different every night.

I’m an aging nerd, passing it on to my kid. I still watch anime but I’ve noticed what hold my attention has changed. I’m from the 90’s era where it exploded in the US,(toonami, weird irreverent era) so there wasn’t a lot of school trope for me as my younger siblings.
I def think a lot of it has to do with target audience, but also story’s tend to be about coming of age or major changes in life, things feel and seem more dramatic when you’re younger too. You have different priorities.
But I’m sure there’s something to be said about wanting to return to our youth and simpler times. I notice it usually doesn’t stay in the school though, if anything it’s like starting again, a “what if?”, another path.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but like anything, an obsession is unhealthy, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming and escaping every once in a while.

I wish you also explored how the Japan's asset bubble crash in the early 90s and subsequent lost decades also had an impact on storytelling being set in high school. School was not the default setting for anime before the crash and the majority of characters back then weren't adolescent or teenagers. I don't have any hard evidence if the crash truly played a part in anime storytelling today, but ever since the crash, the average age of anime characters are progressively becoming younger and younger.
It's only in the last decade when the isekai/tensei boom started that the age of the characters slowly increased, but only to decrease once they've reincarnated into a younger person -- it's like the ultimate form of going back to your youth, but quite literally this time. Anyway, this goes to show that anime is not just an entertainment medium, but it can reflect the realities of Japanese culture and society.

Think part of it is writers know core fan base is that age, and adults also all went thru it and likely miss it. Not every one had a amazing time in school, but id say 80% plus did or at least had not 100% negative. Also Anime rarely likes to show older people, 30 year old's treated like they are old people in anime. Also even younger kids yet to get in high school, want be older, and older want be younger, = easy setting for writing.

Also 40. High school, and the few years directly after it, was the last time I saw my friends on a daily basis. Now I have dear friends that I miss and haven’t seen in years, or they’re gone forever. High school has a similar structure but you have more freedom than when you’re at work as an adult. The Office (US) actually kinda has more in common with high school than the office setting it’s set in if you really examine it.

  • @franciskafayeszter4138
    @franciskafayeszter4138 27 днів тому +40

I think there's one more thing to add. High school is in many societies the last common experience for many people. I had a group of friends, we had known each other since we were 4-5 years old. We went to different schools, but met every week or so. After graduating from high school we went to different universities, but since we lived in the same city, we could still meet each other just like before. But something changed. It became harder to share our experiences, hardships and joys. Studying at different faculties at different universities gave us much more different lives than the different high schools did. This became worse when we graduated and started working. The common elements just slowly vanished and we drifted more and more apart. In high school we all had Maths, History, Biology, etc. In university my subjects at law school had nothing in common with the ones studying architecture, medicine or engineering. One time I talked with a friend studying archtecture about our difficulties in a subject we both called Stats. After a few minutes, it came out that I meant Statistics, while she meant Statics. It was kinda funny, but bittersweet, since although we both found it challenging, this realization shattered the illusion of a common experience.
So I guess the popularity in high school anime and high school settings in western shows and movies is the fact, that this is a common experience for most of the audience - the last of it's kind. The next section of life, that would be as common, as that would be retirement, but by that time our lives are so much drifted apart in this highly pluralistic world, that common ground is difficult to find (and also since the majority of people wouldn't lived through it yet, an anime about retired people couldn't awake nostalgia)

Didn't used to be that way. At lease the anime I watched. Saw Priss sing a rock song before going to her real job, where her fashion store owner boss, an aerobics instructor, and a pink haired police officer bust up killer cyborgs at night. Or a circus pilot taking up a transforming robot and become part of a large world ending war against giant humans living in green starships and in a love triangle with an idol singer and the first officer of the Macross. Saw a villager take up his father's sword and join a gorgeous elf, a young priest, a dwarf, and others to stop the resurrection of an evil goddess. Wasn't really into the high school anime, except for Sailor Moon and Devil Hunter Yohko, but these are more the struggles with everyone fighting demons and trying to balance school and battle. Maybe as a highschooler back then, I gravitated towards the grownups with the large robots.

I didn’t get the socialization I needed at that time, and in a lot of ways I’m starting over better now. I’m excited about the next chapter of my life. I’m writing a different narrative now, and fiction has helped me determine my direction by realizing what could’ve been then.

Before watching the video, my explanation would be because most anime are geared towards young male teenagers from the ages of 12-19, so it would make sense to make them relatable by setting them in high schools. I reckon most Anime set in College, Workplace etc. are perceived as “boring adult stuff”, not as a magical place of adventure and youthful hopefulness. Also a lot of Japanese people look back fondly at their school time and remember them as the best time in their life. Nostalgia oftentimes embellishes the positive experiences and tunes out the negative ones, giving us a skewed perspective of our past.

If grown adults are fantasizing these things, especially when it's focused on minors, then you can see how that's problematic and can lead to some degenerative behaviors.

I’m 27 and consider myself a casual anime enjoyer now. I started watching when I was around 9 yrs old and was absolutely obsessed. I was a pretty shy kid (like most lmao) so anime was my escape, gave me something to look forward to after school & made me hopeful(?) for high school & the future. As I got older though…idk it just doesn’t feel the same. It’s rare for me nowadays to enjoy anime as much as I used to, especially newer ones. I still enjoy video games and an occasional anime rewatch for nostalgia purposes, but for whatever reason high school anime are my absolute LEAST favorite. The circumstances are so boring now, I just feel a huge disconnect from most of the characters and a lot of the plots feel very recycled.

    • @gray_girl
      @gray_girl 25 днів тому +5

I’m 28 and have the same thoughts! I left a much longer comment about it. Some of my friends have just grown out of anime and only watch nostalgic stuff as well. Same for me, I either watch for the nostalgia (or honestly straight up, random shows that my mom banned nerdy child me from watching so I never finished LOL) or just whatever interests me.
And typically I’m drawn to slice of life slower pace stuff or that has more complex themes…Nana for example, or Kotaro Lives Alone. I’ll still watch things with younger characters but it just doesnt pull me in the same way as it used to. Occasionally I’ll find a show I really like the premise or characters, like I’m really loving Apothecary Diaries right now. But it’s usually not the popular stuff that’s everywhere. Some of the stuff that gets bigger feels stale and recycled, or straight up I watch it and can’t get past the fact that they could’ve made the exact same plot line in uni and have it be just as good.
There’s certain things I can’t really stomach in anime anymore either, like the plain Jane no personality oblivious asf main male characters, unnecessary fan service, age gap relationships, miscommunication tropes, etc. I guess with growing up some of these things are easier to see through or less appealing (or were never appealing) as compared to when you’re younger. At times it feels like we grew up but the shows didn’t.

    • @jamjox9922

Part of it is that anime isn't the medium it used to be. As it grew in popularity, newer animes started imitating what already sells (more isekais inbound) and kept imitating the same old styles ( the stereotypical big eyes, cutesy Sailor Moon derivative).
Older animes took more risks so there seemed to be more variety, with popular anime having everything from kids Digimon to adult Cowboy Bebop. This variety has hit rock bottom in the mainstream.
If you want original stuff you have to dig deep and beyond the well known stuff.
This might also be the time to go back in time to older anime that seemed "uninteresting" growing up.
Stuff like 70s stuff or 80s anime that set trends that are still going on. That's the only thing I can suggest.
Aside from that, trying Japanese novels is also a good step forward, and their cinema also has plenty of great films that rival anime.
Asian cinema really has a lot to offer, so UA-cam that. Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea all have healthy and diverse films and TV.

For most people, their peaks where high school or college. Why? Because adult society fucking sucks, and it still sucks for about 99% of us. High school and or college was the last time people had to still be free of of the shitty adult responsibilities while still being old enough to make your own decisions and be cognizant of them.
Basically its the peak of youthful fun and personal freedom before you have to die and face mental exhaustion from the daily grind called modern adult reality.
Not all of us had this or have ever had this, but most have, and for an ethnically and almost culturally similar society like Japan, you can bet almost all of them can relate to the idea that their peak was high school or for some college.
So unless you are rich enough to never work or you are rich but find your work fun, its likely that you are suffering in the hell called being an adult .
Its the nostalgia of "simpler times"

@@CaelWhiz Well the problem we and both Japan and Korea have is that what we have is a lot more like corporatism.
Corporations have a mutually lucrative relationship with the government which skews the market heavily in their favour, which results in the state our countries are in right now.
This is also how corporations get as big and powerful as they are, it can't be done without government help.
But the idea behind capitalism is that government should be small with very little centralisation, where it's easy to start your own business rather than the big governments we all have now with their bureaucrats meddling in every level of society, inevitably making life worse for regular people.

So much pressure put on many young people to exceed especially in asian countries.
I remember here in ireland my friend passing out during an exam due to stress...i also heard stories of kids commitimg suicide getting bad grades.
I couldnt believe this...my parents where so laid back BUT my dad went psycho about my terrible grades....i willnever forget him coming to my school to get my GCSE results...he was very disappointed, 😅
Dragged me to college to do a trade.
I wanted to do Art 🎨
Life doesnt always work out the way you dream it.
    I. Literally work as a cleaner in the same building 15 years ago where i took my art test to get into art...i passed but my father didnt allow me to continue and made me work in a trade in electrical engineering...i hated it
    So boring.
But yeah, to anyone worrying about school and grades, try and make the best of it and even if you fail like me, things can still work it well.
And yes i was super introverted...i was put into the big world totally unprepared but it was a massive learning experience...
I was incredibly shy, hated small talk..
Now i consider myself very good in social situations and conversation.
It takes alot of work and these anime shows reflect my own teens growing up
Its also a reminder that being introverted is way harder to get by in the world when you're not good at studying or not suoer smart..ive always seen the smarte quiet kids get far in life compared to the quiet not so smart kids(myself)
I was in the 3rd dumbest class, 10C
The 2 other classes had the craziest students ever..i dont think any could read a primary school level book.
I was just inbettween dumb and normal I.Q 😅😂
The smart classes were all well behaved and smart..no screaming or making animal noises..all orderly and behaved.
Mines was a like a zoo.
Terrible situation for an introvert, terribly awful 😖

I always thought those settings just make the storyline is easier to make? Like there is almost always a rich friend that help the main character who parent's usually work outside japan and lives alone. Then add childhood friend, a tsundere for comedy and such characters. More money, more free time, ez relations, ez to make a story.

Man I wish people would start saying man I'm old when they are 45 not 20s or 30s. I had to hear it all throughout my twenties you're not old you're just out of shape and can't stop eating junk food that makes you feel and move you like you're in your 60s.

I got into anime in 2010 and I turn 31 in August. I don't have a job (if I were to get one, I can only get a part-time job due to how screwed I would be if I had to work more than a certain amount of hours as I have autism) but I do admit of having similar desires as the Japanese working adult at times, thinking I can go back and try high school all over again, even if I know it would never happen.
Discovered this video in the recommendations when I woke up this morning and subscribed after watching as this was really an insightful video.

I like how it’s not even some sort of speculation that the Japanese obsession with high school is duo to the rest of their lives generally sucking on an epidemical scale.
Plenty of anime producers straight up admitted it. Very directly so.
Doesn’t take much to understand why escaping to another world happens to be the other most popular genre.

One of the reasons this anime "escapism" hits especially hard for me is because of covid; I essentially spent my last high school years in 2020-2022 locked up in my own room, sleeping through online lessons and feeling like i missed out on a lot of the social experiences I could have had otherwise. I'm glad I slowly feel like I'm making up for it by putting myself out there more in university, but as a 'nerdy' introvert it remains an uphill battle.
On another note, I really like your video and storytelling style, look forward to more of your videos in the future :D

I too was very introvert and lonely in my high school years…
Today, that is 6 years after that, I know Jesus Christ.
If I knew Him before, everything would’ve been so much more bearable.
Know Him, so that you may know peace and happiness, so that you know you are not alone.
He is the way, the truth and the life.
No one can go to the Father except through Him.
All who follow Him will attain eternal life and happiness in heaven by having their sins payed for on the cross, but whoever does not will have to pay for their own sins in the lake of fire for all eternity!

I complained about this also. It's also a reason why I avoid most anime because they are set in high school. I just can't relate. My Japanese language partner speculated that perhaps high school was the happiest time in Japanese people's lives with so many potential possibilities of life and things to happen. So they always make stories from high school periods for that reason.

I remember getting depressed being as young as 17 years old, mainly thinking to myself “Is this is? Is this all the freedom I’m ever gonna get? Are these all the adventures I’ll be going through?”
I guess my little teenage brain already knew that, once I was out from school, life would become much more difficult.
Depression stayed with me for a decade, I even thought of joining the 27 Club, but somehow life decided I should stay.
It is still hard to see this kind of Anime for the same reason many people love them; Nostalgia and the promise of freedom, when you know there’s none.

It always felt so weird to me that high school in anime made me think that its the best thing you'll ever experience in school, but the moment you graduate from that point on you're no longer being told what to do by teachers or your parents, you're pretty much on your own, but at the same time im glad that i stumbled into high school settings in some animes.

Finished school in 2008 and went to college until 2012. Can't say I liked school all that much but did enjoy skipping it 4 out of 5 days a week to wander in the woods. I enjoyed college a lot and made a lot of good friends and memories there then worked 7 hours a week at a sweet shop until 2015 when I got my first full time job doing data entry. I remember sitting down on my first day knowing all my free time was going to be work time from now on and I nearly cried then and there. Eventually I made good friends there and actually went to Japan with one of them and 9 years later I'm still at the same company just doing a different job. I work from home now so I slack off most of the time but I'm still shackled to the corporate life. I remember how full of joy and life I was when I started working but my soul has been sucked away over the years. I'm 32, and probably won't be able to retire until I'm in my 70s which is extremely depressing to think about.
