The real star of this run is the studded winter tires.
I watched some video saying stud rally tires are soo grippy in the snow, you feel like you are driving on the dry tarmac. This winter stud probably in the middle of normal tires and stud rally tires, idk.
@@kraanialepsy I'm not sure either. I know just normal all season tires wouldn't have performed the same as with a fwd car on that course.
Yep. The GR Corolla was equipped with standard Nokian non-studded tires. So, not exactly a fair fight.
@@kraanialepsyI have a 2014 ford focus 5 speed manual. It’s front wheel drive and I have studded snow tires and on the snow, it drives super well. Definitely not like pavement and studs suck on pavement but it is much better than any truck or suv I’ve driven in snow
Yup, and pulling the fuses. The GR Corolla uses computers for a perfect drift but with no driver assist you can really get control of that base Corolla, left foot braking and even pulling the handbrake. Even with perfect conditions, computer wizardry is not going to be faster than Wyatt’s driver skill in the LE (nice “slippery day” excuse, sorry Toyota reps lol)

One thing i think could be a cool addition to the winter videos would be the outside temperature on the day, as that plays a major role in snow traction and could be a basis for comparison on the lap timer chart

Not sure how often you guys read comments but could we get an updated “best entry level rally cars” from 6 years ago? I believe you have a strong segment of viewers that are genuinely interested in what is realistically achievable when it comes to getting your foot in the door of the world of rally and rallycross. Maybe just a couple of suggestions each for FF FA and FR platforms.

If I can give another suggestion…..it’s a tall ask, but the views would be worth it. Gr Corolla and civic type R is constantly compared on an Asphalt track…..would love to see them on your dry course. Same day, same conditions. Think you would have a new viewership record.

Now I’m curious, what does Wyatt actually drive? He mentioned the late model Corolla, is this one also his or what else? What professional drivers daily drive says a lot about the car

Yeah, he said his personal Corolla has over 200,000 miles on it. I rented a Corolla a few years ago in Colorado and I have to say, it was kind of fun to drive in the mountain twisties!
Out of all the Will it rally videos, the Corolla ones are my favourites. Really shows how to have fun in a rental

Would definitely like to see a Mazda 2 and gen 2 Hyundai Accent. The stability control on the Mazda is super intrusive and allows no fun, but y'all know how to work around that stuff.

Mine’s extremely fun in the snow, although it’s hindered by the usual factors (open differential, fairly understeery on stock suspension, excessive front brake bias with no easy way to adjust it). On the bright side, it’s pretty easy to engage “fun mode.” If anyone’s curious:
- Pull the ESC-P fuse to disable ABS
- Turn the key to “on” and push the brake and throttle all the way down for ~10 seconds before starting the engine to disable throttle cut on left foot braking
@@Yarf.McBarf It's annoying to turn off the braking throttle cut whenever I might want to left foot brake, but I'm happy that Mazda decided to add that "fun mode" to a car which most people would consider a mundane commuter box.
Edit: it's also nice that the traction control button turns off stability control.

was the GR run with [studded] winter tires? regardless. as a '22 SE sedan owner, that's pretty funny the 2.0L managed to outdo the GR... cause i've got that CVT, and a PHEV with an 8 speed aisin, and I gotta say... the CVT ain't so bad if it's all that u own. but even with less horsepower, the instant torque of an EV motor absolutely kills the CVT in city driving.
The GR was not on studded tires and it was very slippery that day.
@@Teamoneilrally why not keep all cars on the same tires for all tests? tires are the biggest difference for any kind of racing so i'm surprised there's any times recorded at all for this. also, if you ran a baseline car before each test, that would help give you some kind of delta for how slippery the conditions are

Sounds like you have a flawed test and there’s a lack of knowledge as to why a regular Corolla with FWD beat a more power AWD car.

Can something like this be done with a CVT transmission. Would it be better or worse?
A CVT transmission would perform worse as it has an infinite amount of gear ratios that it constantly hunts resulting in a transmission that is less predictable and gives the driver less control. The concepts of weight transfer and vehicle dynamics would remain the same regardless of transmission type.

Honda Fit, will it rally?
2015 Hyundai Elantra. You can turn off the traction control with a button, it has a cable emergency brake in the correct place, and the autotragic version is at least capable of being shifted in sequential mode, albeit it works backwards compared to a real sequential shifter and nannies you pretty hard depending on speed/gear combinations
Was just thinking, would be helpful to Corolla owners to figure out the source of that clunking. Transmission or motor mounts or neither. Seems like worth an upgrade/fix even if you aren't planning on aggressive off-road driving.

Could be helpful to include a benchmark time for a quick lap in a rally school car on the day of testing to give an perspective on how much conditions vary.
To take it a step further you could even use that time in a known quantity car as a multiplier to normalize the times for conditions similar to PAX in scca autox. Wouldn't be perfect but would at least ballpark the times.

I had an automatic sedan as a rental a little over a year ago. I thought it was a surprisingly alright car that really comes alive once you turn all the nannies off, but doesn't necessarily tell you how to do that
