I love how transparent you are. People need to share this kind of stuff more often. My husband did construction for 12 years and I love how much respect you gave your guys that painted your house
Yes. And honestly, the price he got for that paint job seemed super reasonable to me. I mean, given today’s economy, and that he is living in one of the most expensive markets in the country. That’s a lot of house to paint, and taking out and reinstalling all of those windows is a lot of work, but still cheaper and more resourceful than replacing them all.
I also love the respect you give to the architecture of your home, to the culture of early Los Angeles and it's people. 😊 You are wise beyond your years! Thank you.
Don't forget that you do not need to decorate every corner / every wall. It is good to have some empty space / breathing room. If you decorate every corner / wall it starts to look cluttered. Also, make sure there is room to walk in / out the doors and walking space between furniture.
Completely agree. Flow space for free movement is important for a relaxed feel and empty space can create an aesthetic just as much as a filled space can. The key is balance, but not always symmetrical, asymmetry can create interest and lead the eye to open spaces.
Drew the color is dreamy, but I agree with the other comments about leaving some open space, I think a little less crockery on the lovely fireplace would be better. I know you love the pottery, but sometimes less is more. And go a little easy on the candlesticks, lol, you are a candlestick maniac. But you are getting better and better on your design skills. That ceiling that you did was amazing.
Lone Fox!!! I just LOVE your enthusiasm!!!!! That paint color cover in the outside area is perfect!!! It really show cases the architecture so well.. Great choices of pots, really great. I would put some bamboo somewhere in your outside space, I think that and olive tree branches!!!
Had I have seen this earlier, I also would’ve said flameless candles and I also would’ve said Luminara! They are the best! They are based on the design by the Imagineers, that made the candles for the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland. They typically come with a timer, so you can have them going anything between 4 to 10 hours a day. Make sure to get the outdoor ones - the interior ones are made of real wax. I also live in LA, and it does get killer hot - it will melt them.
Plant a Meyer Lemon Tree in that big pot! The citrus scent is so Mediterranean, and you can use the fruits for cooking and / or drinks! Lemons are beautiful! Like Christmas ornaments!
Please paint the beams under the house and where the skinny dining table is brown. It would give great dimension and elevate the space even more. I love how the house is turning out!
Who could possibly have something negative to say about Drew? I’m gonna need these negative people to have a seat and read a book and leave The Lone Fox alone!!!
Some people just are miserable and they want everyone else to be miserable as well. I just block, or report such things delete the trolls who aren’t adult enough to keep their comments to themselves.
I live in Spain we have so many pots like that Just a bit of advice don’t feel with soil do a pot in a pot The grasses are not in flower all the time Euphorbia is fantastic bay, bougainvillea, cactus for easy olive is lovely in terracotta We use a lot of aloes ficus as well I think paint the tiles I made the mistake of putting a beautiful chandelier out side but the sun ruined it went all yellow Happy gardening
Drew...NEVER justify the work you do yourself on your home, or have done for you by others, ever!!! You've done SO much already. Enjoy the blessings you so incredibly deserve! Your home is an extension of you...and you've turned it into something gorgeous and extremely welcoming. Please ignore the negativity that most likely comes from lazy and envious individuals, who are not a vibrational match to your high vibe YT channel and will have to vent their negativity elsewhere. Congrats on your freshly painted home!!! ❤💜❤👍👍👌
I think the area by the trash cans would be really great with a long skinny bench! Mainly using it as a plant stand/shelf for some smaller plants, or you could even do a long window box that hangs over that ledge to have some trailing vines/flowers for some color that you can change out seasonally
The new paint job is beautiful and yes to painting the rafters brown! Because you asked here are my PLANT SUGGESTIONS - In planters use native salvias, culinary sages, yarrow, creeping rosemary and native grasses. In large pots grow some smaller fruit trees like figs or kumquats.
Painting over the baby blue tile with white would be so classic and give contrast to the terracotta floor. Cobalt blue and white tile fountains are beautiful 😊
Never feel like you have to justify your decisions. Your home, your location, your money. You've done an amazing job on this home and I've loved watching the transition! Love from Michigan!
I'm 8 minutes in and as a 5th house homeowner, the amount you paid for what appears to be a professional job is actually a DEAL! It totally makes the house look original and fit the architecture! It's absolutely gorgeous!
I was thinking the same! Like, that price is a deal, even for where I live. My best guess is that LA has a larger skilled labor pool, and that is why the price is so competitive. Kind of how my mom lives in a fairly expensive part of south Florida, but her weekly pool maintenance man only charges $100 a month, and he is very professional.
Just got back from a tropical trip where the flower bougainvillea was EVERYWHERE in the ground and in pots. Would look stunning in your courtyard (and comes in lots of colors- pinks, violets, oranges, white) and would grow well in your zone.
Be careful putting plants in the pots that are sort of jug shaped - only put pots as wide as the hole at the top. Otherwise if you fill them with soil, the plant will eventually get root-bound, and because the opening is smaller than the rootball, you can't get them out to re-pot them. You can still do beautiful plants in these sort of pots, but you need to get the right type of plant, or have pots only as big as the opening. P.S. Your house looks STUNNING!
Our Spanish style home growing up in California included bougainvillea, jacaranda, birds of paradise and a front lawn of moss grass. I loved it! A color pallet of lavender, rose, California orange and purples over green moss.
Love the idea of painting over the baby blue on the fountain and steps. That color is very jarring against the new house colors. The orange/rust color you suggested is a good option.
Your home looks fabulous! AND, you should never have to apologize for what you spend. This is your home and you have every right to do/pay whatever you want to :)
The color change is gorgeous! Since you are filling the courtyard with pots, the baby blue tile really sticks out like a sore thumb. Great idea to pick up a color from the inspiration tile in the middle. Maybe a terracotta type of red, similar to the red in the tile? You will regret the rattan chairs sitting where you need to traverse the trash cans. It will become an irritation to have to move them every week to pull out the trash. Maybe something thinner? A rustic bench that will hug the wall and not need to be moved? I’m a bit OCD when things don’t line up and throw off the symmetry. I adore the table, if you can not center it under the window due to losing seating due to the pillar, perhaps put the bench idea you had on that side and at least nudge the table so it at least aligns with the outside edge of the window instead of being just a few inches off? All of those pot are simply to die for! I hope your gardener is going to be doing the watering! I was raised in So Cal and the heat. Potted plants dry out so quickly because they can’t pull moisture from the surrounding ground. The colors you selected are spot on and so beautiful together. I love your idea of painting the underside beams to trick the eye into believing they are wood. I’ve NEVER commented on a post before but this courtyard is becoming the heart of the home. You will have so many wonderful hours spent here with friends, laughing and sharing life together.
I find it annoying when people comment on the cost of things, it’s usually envy based. We all need to consider that we need to pay people’s worth, you know your value, extrapolate that worth to others. Well done Drew! 😘
I love that you say this. My husband is a painter. I had a friend comment that he is expensive, but he's worth it. Well, I was a bit offended because painting is a lot of work. Just because people choose painting as a profession, it doesn't mean they shouldn't be compensated appropriately.
Exactly, they are making a living so that they can pay their bills. Just like everyone. People are constantly on the neighborhood app asking for recommendations for cheap contractors. It is offensive and hard to understand why people assume contractors should be cheap. Keri💜
Appreciate the transparency. It’s refreshing especially since a lot of UA-camrs want you to believe everything is so simple and DIY friendly. The paint color is gorgeous and I love how the courtyard turned out!
The more I think about it, the more I think leaving the fountain blue is the best choice. In design the eye needs resting spots, which would be the water/blue fountain in the center, plus it's more calming and in character with the garden feel that plants will add. I'd keep the fountain, just polish it up nicely and make it a lovely feature.
Drew, I don’t think Ive ever seen the exterior of your home. I can totally see why you bought this property. It’s pretty amazing. But vinyl windows… weird given the architecture 🤷🏻♀️ anyway, I love what you did. 🙌🏻 Benjamin Moore… my favorite paint brand 👍🏻 the color you chose is way more authentic… the blue paint color probably helped you buy it for a better price 😂Sometimes I feel bad for homeowners… they make poor choices and don’t realize it 🤦🏼♀️ You did a great job of capturing the painting process. LOL… you slept without windows during the summer 😂 Yup… LA prices are not at all relatable 🤷🏻♀️ so there that. Anyway, I love the transition… you are killing it inside and out 🙌🏻 Best always … RR
It looks amazing. I love your decorating colors and Courtyard is totally fabulous. I also am a lover of empty pots. P s some of those pashu have are drop D e a d gorgeous
Do you know what is under that blue tile currently? Is there another tile? I am so into this video I couldn't even wait till the end to comment! 😆 I can't wait to see what you do with it I know it's going to be amazing! Everything is already looking insanely beautiful! I'm so glad you were transparent about the cost and the process of painting the exterior. It's not just your home it's your design calling card and you deserve to make it your style no matter what others think. It's your baby not theirs. Plus, don't we all watch to see you make it look beautiful? 😊 You're always a joy to watch and I think your fans celebrate your designs along with you because you are so genuine and lovable. ❤
Drew, the paint colors are magnificent and make the beautiful architecture of your courtyard stand out. Paint the beams and under eaves a wood color. Please show us how to paint tiles in a tutorial. So many of us are stuck with ugly tile colors and just don’t know where to start or how much work and money it costs to do. Your restoration work is always impeccable and I would trust all of your efforts on painting the tile. Respectfully, Two suggestions. Don’t overcrowd that amazing space. When you have a party, leave room for your guests to walk around comfortably. The statue in the fountain doesn’t suit your aesthetic. Your house seems Spanish or Mission in style. The goddess needs to go. Think about a fountain made from one of your massive, glorious pots surrounded by terra cotta tile with green accents that complements the color of your home. You are the most inspirational designer on UA-cam. Your end results are just MAGIC! Thank you for your creativity and engaging personality.
For the outdoor table, I really suggest having a glass top made to fit for it. Not only does it keep the wood protected, but it’s also way easier to clean after eating 🫶🏼
Not surprised by the cost of painting your home. It looks great! Yes, paint the tile. As for the area near the garbage cans, a long, narrow planter with tall plants to add it bit of privacy there might be nice. The color of the window frames and the trunk of the large tree in the court yard match perfectly! It all looks so very beautiful and as always, you've chosen the perfect colors and brought in gorgeous items!
Julia, great idea for long, narrow planter with screening plants! Could be on casters so it can be scooted out of the way, if needed, when taking the trash toters in/out. Drew, I would vote "yes" to painting the rafters. Not sure if the plants on the trellises are bougainvillea but, if not, it would be great to include this beautiful plant somewhere. Very appropriate to your architecture and climate. Congratulations on this magnificent home and your successful renovation. Your energy, vision and hard work are inspirational!
RE: PLANTS I went back to the image of the plants that were originally there, that you liked. They are all easily identifiable: fire stick succulent, aeonium black succulent, geraniums, etc. Go back to the image, select what you like, take the photo to a nursery...easy! The plants looked happy in that location, so you won't really have to worry if they'll be a good fit. Most of those plants only need to be watered once a week. You may want to add some bougainvillea, maybe some interesting cacti.
Painting the light blue tiles a terracotta color or a color similar to your new home color would look great in my opinion. Everything looks stunning Drew… I love.❤️
You should definitely get a lemon and/or avocado tree for your courtyard if you like either of those and I think a trellis with vines growing across it would be pretty where those lightweight chairs and bust are! You could also add a ladder to grow spices on there too like you did in an older DIY!
yes to a lemon tree .. i wonder if they can be espaliered .. or a vine to grow along a trellis.. bougainvillea maybe?? and definitely sage and oregano in the small pots ..
As someone who was born and raised in Pasadena lemon/ lime trees are always so beautiful and work well. Secondly a fig or avocado tree could be a plus too.
My vote is for a lemon AND an avocado! What the hell, he might as well get a lime tree too. I don't want to have to bring the limes when Drew invites me over for Margaritas! TeeHee
Okay for the baby blue tiles, DEFINITELY go orange. If it contrasts too harsh with the royal blue, maybe it's an opportunity to bring in that brown from your windows. I'm going to stalk your comment section for plant suggestions because I need ideas too! Lol! 😊
Don't ever feel you need to apologize for having money. First of all you worked hard for it. I'm 71 and don't have any extra $$ but I have food on the table, roof over my head, a man that loves me, great friends, two wonderful kids.. don't even get me started how blessed I am with my 4 grandchildren. I look around and I'm glad for everything people have, don't apologize just enjoy!
Beautiful. I think painting the rafters brown would be gorgeous and give that old world vibe. I also think the beautiful rusty red would be a beautiful addition to your courtyard tile. Nice job!
Oh well done Beautiful front courtyard. Try Jasmine, not only does it have the most heavenly scent, it is a green climbing plant 🌿with white delicate flowers🌼. All your hard work is coming together beautifully. 👏Sending love from Rosie O from Devon England 🇬🇧😘
Love it!! Some plant ideas: Jasmine and bougainvillea. The jasmine has a heavenly scent and the bougainvillea will cast beautiful colors. Also, you could do rosemary, mint, basil, and lavender in pots. Great for the senses and the kitchen!
Nice! Yes, paint the eaves and also paint the wood ceilings and beams in the covered areas the dark brown, not the lighter brown you used around the windows. It will feel cozy, it will emphasize the mission style of the home and it will look GREAT!!! I also think rust would look way better than the baby blue currently on the tiles. Keep the chairs around the table. Benches are SO uncomfortable, they're difficult to climb over, they're always too far or too close to the table and aren't easily adjusted. I like the idea of a chandelier with candles, but it's not practical outdoors because wind will blow out the candles.
Painting the rafter tails brown will give you an effect very similar to a dentil molding. I know you liked that effect in your living room, so you might like it on the exterior. I rather like not having that texture added to all the other details you have in the courtyard. It allows the house to be a quieter backdrop to that texture-filled space.
That price sounds reasonable for the amount of labor and scale of the project. Love the transparency because it keeps expectations realistic. All budgets are different and all markets are different, but as a viewer it’s refreshing to understand what is or isn’t feasible to replicate myself. Your home is beautiful!
Looks great! Everyone you have hired from opening a doorway, working in the kitchen and painting the house have been on point! You have done a fantastic job in renovating / updating your home. Kudos to Justin and Maria for assisting you. Love your transformations. ❤❤
Such a tranquil transformation! Terracotta everywhere gets my vote. Including the color paint for the tile planters and fountain. Sorry Drew, blue will not do, it’s just not YOU! I’d love to see the stairs transformed with a black/white base and hints of color to highlight/compliment the new house vibe. Yes, it’s a VIBE!! Simply stunning 😍
Les céramiques de cette cour vont parfaitement avec le style de la maison! La couleur "terracotta" est absolument partout, ce n'est pas très original...
In a small courtyard sometimes is nice to put a big mirror. I thought of tris in the section were you have to take the trash but I don’t know if it’s the right place.
Love the new house color! Love the trim colors! Oh my gosh, yes! paint all the blue tiles, I’d love to see the green trim color incorporated into that…and, love the lanterns! What a serene, beautiful courtyard 💚
Watching this video, I couldn't do thinking about Scripps College or in Claremont. If you have a chance, you should go out and walk the grounds for inspiration on plants. The colors you chose for the stucco and windows are so Scripps and the architecture of the courtyard exactly matches the college. Also, I think you should do some citrus in those pots! Great for garden and kitchen! It's beautiful, all that you've done for your home. ❤
Another beautiful design job. Great call on paint color choices. It all makes sense with the rest of house, and your personal design style. Yes, paint light blue tiles your orange idea. Yes, paint under eaves with darker color. Have you thought of hanging something like a soft light fixture, maybe with fake candles, from beam in seating area? When someone finds good pros, it's a joyous thing...and nice you gave them a shout out.
I love the new house color. Since growing up in Santa Barbara, I've always loved this style of home and I appreciate so much that you have returned it to a color that is more in keeping with its style.
That's an incredible price to have your home painted! I live in a small, one level ranch and paid half of what you paid for your large, multi-level home. Nice job. It looks amazing.
YES, paint the bluie tiles. And don't worrry about the cost. The result was so worth it and I'm sure it has added a lot to the value of the house. You work really hard to entertain us, your viewers, and I love that we can pay it forward with our ticks etc. Besides, it's your house, you can do whatever you want. I'v enjoyed seeing the things we've watched you buy finding a home. I can imagine walking down your street in the evening while you and your friends are sitting out in the Loggia and catching glimpses through the windows. Magnificent.
OMG I 🩷 the house color combo!! So perfect!!! Drew, u r so talented!! I definitely agree with u on the baby blue tile color change. Nobody asked(Arvin reference), but I have an idea on the fountain. She seems very Greek or Roman-inspired, not so much Spanish. What about exchanging her for a very large pot-fountain instead? I think that would b a little more in the Spanish tradition. Just a thought 🤷♀️ Love u and ur channel!!
Drew, I live in OC and might suggest a gardenia plant or two. It’s an evergreen shrub with an absolutely beautiful, fragrant white flower that you can also cut for indoor arrangements. If placed near your entrance, you’ll have a wonderful scent as you enter your gorgeous courtyard. 💕
The under-eves and the beams in the little eating area…yes paint them brown…. It will add texture and enhance the architectural detail. Paint the tile a terra cotta color. Leave the dark blue. Would look more authentic. If you hang a candle chandelier over the table get something that has hurricane glass shades. No candle wax dripping on you or food and the barest of breeze will blow out the candles. Just my opinion ! 😎😁. I absolutely LOVE your house colors. You’re so right about it being more in keeping with the home. 👍. As someone in the construction business who lives in the LA area, I don’t think you overpaid for the paint job you got. The windows were a major headache, and it looks like they did a good job. It’s all about the prep!
Absolutely LOVE how the house paint came out. That creamy white is so dreamy! Yes to painting the tile! And why not try a solar light in the lanterns? 💡 And I think bougainvillea would be so pretty in the courtyard too! Like the deeper moody colored variety 😍
I REALLY appreciate you being transparent about cost. As a new homeowner in (northern) California, I’ve been wanting to paint my house but haven’t been able to get a good idea of what’s a reasonable quote and what isn’t.
The new color is beautiful! Two ideas? 1. What about a collaboration with Amanda from Planterina? She's really quirky and totally honest about what plants she successfully moves outside in the summer, and what she sends to the big garden in the sky. AND 2. FIELD TRIP!! Take us to the San Diego Zoo and the botanical garden for inspiration! But if you're just running to a box store I think you will do best with sturdy low maintenance, water holding plants like ZZ's, Snake plants and bird of paradise. Without a drip system the grasses won't hold up as long if you forget to water them.
The house is so beautiful. I love the new color! As far as the tiles, you can start with painting the baby blue ones, which I think would look amazing, and then decide after that so you don't have to decide to paint both right away. Thank you for being transparent on the price! I am a former LA native and that price seems actually pretty reasonable for what they did. I love your videos, Drew! Never boring! You are so talented, inspiring, and creative!
Beautiful Courtyard, Drew! Love the new color! As for what to put in the clay pots; a Meyer Lemon Tree, Fig, Hibiscus, Gardenia, Bougainvillea, Herbs, Ivy, Prickly Pear, or a mini Banana Tree - all can do very well in pots. Including; Italian Cypress Trees. Plus, of course small varieties of palm and/or papas grasses. Paint that wrought iron chair black to give it some pop and to balance the same color of the bistro set. Place the head statute on the rustic door table with a woven mat or tray or scarf used as a table runner underneath, and perhaps, some fat chunky candles along with it. Also, be on the search to find a iron etagere (paint it black, or house trim color, or terracotta?!?) to use as potting stand to hold outside eating/entertainment utensils/clay bowls/platters, etc.
This is feckin' stunning! I just love it, I am so inspired. Thanks for being transparent about the cost, these things are super expensive in Dublin Ireland and I appreciate the huge amount of work and skill it took for your painter to do all of that, so anyone who doesn't have anything nice to say about this should keep it to themselves!
Love it! Yes to painting the tiles and rafters. Plants: - I think you should add some climbers behind the table and chairs to make it really lush. Perhaps a Bougainville / honey suckle or jasmine - For the pots, Geraniums, rosemary and lavender are great Mediterranean vibes
I think painting the tiles terracotta orange where baby blue is…would work nicely…. but I also think it would be nice if he painted the baby blue areas the same color as the window trim.
Love the fresh start of the courtyard! I agree that the fountain, planter & step tiles need a fresh look. I suggest leaving the orange colored inside tile(love) but paint the light blue & navy tiles the green color of your windows. It's a green in nature so any plants, trees or flowers you choose will pop while complimenting the orange navy & light blue inset tile!
Your courtyard looks very elegant and has a wonderful “feel” to it. Two things that you might consider. First, center the little round blacktable in front of the window. It would make a huge difference. Also, given the style of the home, palms would be a wonderful choice to include in the courtyard and certainly add to the elegance. You have really created such an outstanding space. Enjoy!
You could never bore me with your honesty and excitement and praise of others. Your home is so lovely andI have loved watching it come together because you have given me the chance to really appreciate a different style to my own. Thank you Drew. 😊💕
The colors your picked are perfection. Painting the wood pieces at the eaves would look great! How about a complete retile of the areas with that blue tile (porch step risers, planter curbs etc.) the fountain could also be redone. Everything else is so elevated that a painted over tile just seems like it might not live up to to the care you have done everywhere else. For plants I would suggest rosemary, fragrant sage, lavender, olive trees… Doing this sometime before the winter and El Niño would be good.
Drew your color sense is beyond compare. I love the paint job on your house. Tell your guys they did a stellar job. Can't wait to see more! And YES! Paint the rafters brown!
1. Coolest tree for near the house = fig tree (mediterranean feel, exotic leaf shape). 2 Put those great lanterns up on the top stair landing or move the vases elsewhere (might be too many same-sized things there). 3. Mask the trash cans with a piece of black fence that can be easily pull up and out on Trash Day. 4. You cannot have one "outcast" friend sitting outside of the sitting area: switch the 2 open-back lighter chairs for opposite the couch and the 2 larger chairs can go in the courtyard. 5. Use that long dining table in the courtyard to work on every day and instead find an iron table pedestal and put a plank oval top on it for use with the ice cream chairs. It'll be easier for people to get in and out of that area - corner table legs are very restrictive especially after you've had a couple drinks. You can put that Work Table on casters that can lock for when you're working. Maybe even put it across the trash can zone to mask it.
You courtyard is STUNNING! I love the new colors, I never cared for the blue! I agree with the others that said paint the tile terra cotta that would be gorgeous! Those pots are to die for Drew, this home is unbelievable I LOVE everything you have done! You are such an artist. Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Love the paint! It's definitely worth the money! I understand how expensive it is, everything is so expensive. Especially a job well done. I do think you should paint the understory woodwork brown. Especially above your beautiful dining area. As for plants. It all depends on how much time you want to spend on watering and maintenance. Please do paint those tiles. That blue needs to go. Don't listen to the negative Drew. You are doing a wonderful job! I love your videos and reels. They are my ray of sunshine and inspiration.
Your house looks fabulous Drew!! Agree with you, the blue tiles around the fountain will look better in a nice terracotta, also it will blend in with the pieces you've placed around the courtyard!!
Yes, I’d paint the pale blue tile a terracotta color, but leave the dark blue as is. The exterior looks so good creamy white! I’m looking for a Spanish style bungalow and you’re doing this is so inspiring for me … so thank you! Hope this is just the beginning as I can never seem to get enough !!! 😍
Your storytelling at the beginning of this video was spectacular. it takes a lot of planning to get big steps like this done, so congrats on the final vision being literally perfection!!! I literally gasped when you showed the new exterior paint colour. Most beautiful home. Can’t wait for your AD video ❤️🔥
Oh, what a lovely start you’ve made in the courtyard, Drew! I have a few things I’d like to suggest/mention: 1) place a large rustic bench on the wall near your bin nook with a couple/three plants. You have a little seating and no need to move anything on trash day! 2) the little round table & chairs might look more pleasing centered among those windows. Place a few pots on either side. 3) speaking of windows, please remind us why some have mullions and some don’t? 4) new tile around the planting beds might work out better in the long run. Is tile paint produced to withstand the heat/moisture that you’ll have there? Keep creating, Drew. You and MaCenna are two of a kind and I love the pair of you! Blessings! 😊
Hello Drew! I am not a Decorator, nor a Contractor, but I have to admit: I do very much think that the new cream color of the house, is much more appropriate to it's magnificent style. Also: I love the peek at the Court Yard you offered today.... I also think that you might paint over the "Blue" tones - all of them in fact that are in the tiles surrounding the fountain and the plants. Perhaps a more neutral tone or brown might be more cohesive with the natural colors. Yours always: M. in New York
What? Your courtyard is everything! You totally need to plant a friendship garden. So many plants spread, so you can take a plant from each friend, then when they start getting to big, give your friends different plants that they don't have. Each plant will remind you of someone ❤
I love a house with a courtyard and your courtyard is lovely. Never apologize for having what you want and spending your own money to get it. If anyone has negative comments, its likely because of jealousy. I’m with Rebecca Robeson above who mentioned painting the blue out to a rich terracotta color. I love how your home is coming along, you are an inspiration!
I couldn't have lived with that exterior paint color you inherited either. Very smart to have taken that into consideration when submitting the house purchase bid. I can't wait to see the eventual courtyard reveal video.
Drew!!! Add LED lights to your lanterns! And pick up a few more for your two circe areas and the sitting and dining areas! Maybe there are some that you could control with your phone! ORRR some that are solar! :)
Love the white walls - so much cooler for the Cal sun. Paint the light blue tiles to the terracotta colour. Then if the darker blue doesn't look right you can pick another colour from the detailed tiles to paint those - maybe the lemon colour. Maybe some remote controlled puk lights in the lanterns would be good. Would be a shame to not have them illuminate at night. Suggestion for plant ideas - visit a local nursery. You don't need to buy there, but you will get ideas of what will grow in your area and look good in the courtyard. They gave you the gardener's info - I had to go back and listen again because I thought you said they gave you the gardener LOL That wall near the trash cans looks like it needs some greenery up/down the wall. Maybe long narrow pots with trellises that climbers could grow up, or long narrow pots on the top of the wall with trailing plants growing down.
I love how transparent you are. People need to share this kind of stuff more often. My husband did construction for 12 years and I love how much respect you gave your guys that painted your house
Just beautiful❤❤
Paying a livable wage to contractors is great too. Don't want to get ripped off but everyone should benefit from the deal ❤ I love his vodeos
Thank you.
That house is absolutely GORGEOUS‼️💫inside and outside. Love all your urns💕👌
BTW… yes, paint the blue fountain faces out to a rich terracotta 👍🏻
Great idea Rebecca! Keri💜
Yes, paint the blue tiles as you said, it might actually make the water in the fountain 'sparkle' when you get it cleaned out.
Yes, terracotta is the way to go!
Terra cotta would be lovely out there.
Definitely terracotta!
I also agree, it already feels very cluttered though some of the pieces are really nice.
That concept doesn't exist for "decorators".
Lone Fox!!! I just LOVE your enthusiasm!!!!! That paint color cover in the outside area is perfect!!! It really show cases the architecture so well.. Great choices of pots, really great. I would put some bamboo somewhere in your outside space, I think that and olive tree branches!!!
I would consider using a flameless candle inside the lantern that uses a remote. Safe, easy and pretty.

I was thinking the same! Brilliant!! ✨
Use Solar lights in those lanterns..they are so pretty.
The courtyard is looking great! But please paint over the baby blue tiles!!
Or maybe add some cobalt and aqua flower pots. Maybe some blue-green pumpkins for fall!
Yes! I agree! That would be stunning.
I def agree with these areas being painted the dark brown!
Negative or positive we are all entitled to our opinion. If you don't like that fact then you sit down and read a book. Or the Constitution.
I live in Spain we have so many pots like that
Just a bit of advice don’t feel with soil do a pot in a pot
The grasses are not in flower all the time
Euphorbia is fantastic bay, bougainvillea, cactus for easy olive is lovely in terracotta
We use a lot of aloes ficus as well
I think paint the tiles
I made the mistake of putting a beautiful chandelier out side but the sun ruined it went all yellow
Happy gardening
Constructive criticism yes, negativity no.
I thought the same with a hanging box! But also love your bench idea..
Yes!! I thought a bench would look nice there, too 👍🏻
Very smart idea 💡
A bench was my first thought
Great idea! I was thinking the same!
Absolutely spot on for the plants...they would be perfect.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR DISSSS😍😍😍
lol @@jadahopkins5730
+Star Jasmine is one of my favorites for how fragrant it is
Yes, native plants!!!
Painting over the baby blue tile with white would be so classic and give contrast to the terracotta floor. Cobalt blue and white tile fountains are beautiful 😊
Ohhh I never thought of white!
I second ! Idea white for the tile ! I live in Latin America …classic !
Third
Fourth 😂

Never feel like you have to justify your decisions. Your home, your location, your money. You've done an amazing job on this home and I've loved watching the transition! Love from Michigan!
You should definitely paint the tiles!! Also, it’s your house so people need to get over it. They don’t pay your mortgage. It’s looking so good!!! ❤
I'm 8 minutes in and as a 5th house homeowner, the amount you paid for what appears to be a professional job is actually a DEAL! It totally makes the house look original and fit the architecture! It's absolutely gorgeous!
I agree and I don't live in Los Angeles, I live in mid-Michigan.
Omg the tables and chairs look so good!
I agree too. That's a large building; his painters did a great job for a great price.
Your home is looking so fab!
I picture bougainvillea climbing up the walls and over your arched doorways
They come in so many colors I think it would be beautiful ❤
I can imagine how spectacular a red or pink bougainvillea would have looked against the original blue walls
I don’t care for them because of the giant thorns. But I guess it can be the gardener’s problem !! They are very Californian though !
Just watch placement as they have thorns. I love the, and they’re great once they “take” but can be hard to get started particularly in a pot.
I agree. I think the orange would both contrast and complement the blue, wall colour and the different pots and decorations/furniture drew has added
Agreed! The blue is just hard with the green windows 🪟
@@lonefox
What about maroon?
Alternatively, the red terracotta tone of the current pots you have.
Your home looks fabulous! AND, you should never have to apologize for what you spend. This is your home and you have every right to do/pay whatever you want to :)
Yes, exactly!
Your home is giving "healing energy" and just looks like a place that just relaxes anyone who enters. Love seeing your work!
Ahh I love this comment! Thank you 🙏

That milky white for the exterior was such a good choice! The courtyard is giving staycation vibes! Love it!🫶
❤❤ the respect in the videos to your contracted tradespeople. You often model respect including when you're shopping vintage. Great work!
Drew, the house looks so much warmer, welcoming and sophisticated. Good choice!
Great colour choice, loved the white and olive as well.
Keri💜
Wow! What a dramatic and beautiful change to the exterior! Love this ❤
The new house color is beautiful and perfect. You made a great choice.
Thank you 🤎
Appreciate the transparency.
You don’t have to put plants in all your pots, empty pot are beautiful in itself. the outside side of your home is beautiful!
Drew, I don’t think Ive ever seen the exterior of your home. I can totally see why you bought this property. It’s pretty amazing. But vinyl windows… weird given the architecture 🤷🏻♀️ anyway, I love what you did. 🙌🏻 Benjamin Moore… my favorite paint brand 👍🏻 the color you chose is way more authentic… the blue paint color probably helped you buy it for a better price 😂Sometimes I feel bad for homeowners… they make poor choices and don’t realize it 🤦🏼♀️
You did a great job of capturing the painting process.
LOL… you slept without windows during the summer 😂
Yup… LA prices are not at all relatable 🤷🏻♀️ so there that.
Anyway, I love the transition… you are killing it inside and out 🙌🏻
Best always … RR
Yes! Definitely just want to add plants to the more “bowl” shaped pots and leave the pretty olive jars as is!
It looks amazing. I love your decorating colors and Courtyard is totally fabulous. I also am a lover of empty pots. P s some of those pashu have are drop D e a d gorgeous
I would like having one or two of the smaller pots (in a grouping) - on its side?
Do you know what is under that blue tile currently? Is there another tile? I am so into this video I couldn't even wait till the end to comment! 😆 I can't wait to see what you do with it I know it's going to be amazing! Everything is already looking insanely beautiful! I'm so glad you were transparent about the cost and the process of painting the exterior. It's not just your home it's your design calling card and you deserve to make it your style no matter what others think. It's your baby not theirs. Plus, don't we all watch to see you make it look beautiful? 😊
You're always a joy to watch and I think your fans celebrate your designs along with you because you are so genuine and lovable.
Agree about the fountain statue. And those blue tiles definitely need to be replaced or painted. Good point about over-crowding too.
Agree about the statue. A large olive pot would be great in its place.
Ooo! Cacti, yes, big ones!!!
Especially the bougainvillea, my heart be still!
Great idea!
Painting the light blue tiles a terracotta color or a color similar to your new home color would look great in my opinion. Everything looks stunning Drew… I love.❤️
Agreed!! I think the light blue looks like an 80s/90s pool. Terra cotta or orange would be gorgeous.
Star Jasmine for the vine!
TeeHee
Kumquat trees or bushes are awesome also !
Nice job!
In my opinion, a dwarf olive tree, lavender, and rosemary would accentuate your home beautifully and should work well with the cliamte.
These are awesome suggestions! Hope he sees this!
Jasmine is gorgeous! Love the look of bougainvillea and it matches the style of the house - but it can be messy.
Yes!! And Mandevilla!
I agree with you, maybe battery operated candles would be a wiser choice
Unless you’ve got glass globes to guard against the wind consider a plan b!
Bougnevilla looks gorgeous in a courtyard. I have it benind my pool it’s gorgeous. Also geraniums look great.
Oh Drew! Your color choices are superb! It looks like a truly Spanish style now!
Agree
I love the way your "not-make over" make over turned out. The courtyard looks like a showroom. It's beautiful and so inviting.
Wow ! I grew up in Oxnard so close ! Santa Barbara is so beautiful !!
@@mommygarcia9137 Well, hello neighbor! I live near the Bay Area now, but I still miss that area so much.
Just a thought 🤷♀️
Love u and ur channel!!
Drew, you NEED your own large coffee table design book. I need one for my house!

I second thé gardenia plant. The scent is heavenly and it doesn’t lose its leaves so an added bonus
Or Star Jasmine… so good and it climbs
The paint job is immaculate and the price was a bargain for such a massive job👏🏻❤️
The courtyard is awesome. I much prefer the white house with the brown trim over the blue. The blue was just too much. I hope you enjoyed the concert.
Absolutely LOVE how the house paint came out. That creamy white is so dreamy!
Yes to painting the tile!
And why not try a solar light in the lanterns? 💡
And I think bougainvillea would be so pretty in the courtyard too!
I’d LOVE to see Amanda’s take on filling this space out :)
@@elleoftwocities Did you see her burgundy ficus tree from today's video?! It would look SO GOOD in Drew's house!
Like everything you do amazing I'm in love with the colors you chose for your house they are perfect 🤗👍👍👍😀
Absolutely! That house needs a bougainvillea.
Plants:
- I think you should add some climbers behind the table and chairs to make it really lush. Perhaps a Bougainville / honey suckle or jasmine
- For the pots, Geraniums, rosemary and lavender are great Mediterranean vibes
I think painting the tiles terracotta orange where baby blue is…would work nicely…. but I also think it would be nice if he painted the baby blue areas the same color as the window trim.
Love the fresh start of the courtyard! I agree that the fountain, planter & step tiles need a fresh look. I suggest leaving the orange colored inside tile(love) but paint the light blue & navy tiles the green color of your windows. It's a green in nature so any plants, trees or flowers you choose will pop while complimenting the orange navy & light blue inset tile!
Love the new paint job! More fitting to the Spanish style of the house. Courtyard looks awesome!
Enjoy!
So glad you decided to share it on this channel! So excited to see the results 🥰
For plants I would suggest rosemary, fragrant sage, lavender, olive trees…
Doing this sometime before the winter and El Niño would be good.
You read my mind. And spoke for me. Thanks.
Excellent summation. (I could not help but feel sorry for the "outcast friend.")
I hope Drew follows all of your sound advice.
🌿💐🌿😊💚😘🌿💐🌿
Get a copy of the Sunset Western Gardens Book and the Sunset Western Landscaping Book. They are the gardener's bible in the western states.
Your house looks fabulous Drew!! Agree with you, the blue tiles around the fountain will look better in a nice terracotta, also it will blend in with the pieces you've placed around the courtyard!!
I love the new paint color. Yes, paint the tile.
That courtyard is everything omg ❤
Your storytelling at the beginning of this video was spectacular. it takes a lot of planning to get big steps like this done, so congrats on the final vision being literally perfection!!! I literally gasped when you showed the new exterior paint colour. Most beautiful home. Can’t wait for your AD video ❤️🔥
Oh, what a lovely start you’ve made in the courtyard, Drew! I have a few things I’d like to suggest/mention:
1) place a large rustic bench on the wall near your bin nook with a couple/three plants.
Blessings! 😊
Wowwwww amazing choice in colors for the house and windows. Stunning stunning stunning!!!
Hello Drew!
I am not a Decorator, nor a Contractor, but I have to admit: I do very much think that the new cream color of the house, is much more
appropriate to it's magnificent style. Also: I love the peek at the Court Yard you offered today.... I also think that you might paint
over the "Blue" tones - all of them in fact that are in the tiles surrounding the fountain and the plants. Perhaps a more neutral tone
or brown might be more cohesive with the natural colors. Yours always: M. in New York
What? Your courtyard is everything! You totally need to plant a friendship garden. So many plants spread, so you can take a plant from each friend, then when they start getting to big, give your friends different plants that they don't have. Each plant will remind you of someone ❤
Sweet idea!! 💕
i actually love the baby blue tile! it's beautiful
You can really appreciate the architectural style with the paint you chose.
It really just pops 🥹🤩
I couldn't have lived with that exterior paint color you inherited either. Very smart to have taken that into consideration when submitting the house purchase bid. I can't wait to see the eventual courtyard reveal video.
Drew, we’re delighted that you can create the home you want from the house you bought. Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Good choice of house colors, it looks beautiful. Yes, I would paint the title!
Drew!!! Add LED lights to your lanterns! And pick up a few more for your two circe areas and the sitting and dining areas! Maybe there are some that you could control with your phone! ORRR some that are solar! :)
OR you could think about string lights across the courtyard if you have multiple points where you could hang them.
