  • Update 1/8/17: I have decided to put her up for sale. Check the ad out on Scream and Fly. www.screamandfly.com/showthrea...
    Or POP Yachts website.
A 11 mile 9/11/15 run up the North half of Lake Washington. Turned out to be the last ride of the year as the record setting summer quickly went away! :-(

Beautiful engines. Grew up with a few sea horses. Had a tin boat in the sixties as a little kid with an early fifties 5hp Johnson. Dad had a '63 40hp on a 13' Leavens that skipped along nicely. Went through the seventies with a '68 55hp 3 cylinder on a Grew. Started the eighties with a 70hp 3 cylinder on a Sunray. All great motors.

I was in my late 20's when these came out, and I still remember the dreams I had and research I did on different combinations of boats and hulls.
In those days, 21 feet for a lake boat was the norm (with a 175-200-225 Black Max Mercury), but the thought of a Johnson or Evinrude V8 2-stroke blowing down the cove at 70+ mph was really grist for the imagination. Ultimately, the numbers showed the motor was just too heavy for that class of boat, and my father's pals who had the big Mercurys were already learning new and dangerous lessons; one of which was the danger of coming off the throttle at full speed when the trim was dialed in.
At speeds approaching 70 or better, coming off the throttle resulted in the wind resistance that had built up under the boat no longer having the opposing force of the propeller pushing the boat down on the water; for several seconds the boat seemed to go airborne, and the slightest weight imbalance either made the boat tilt left or right, or (god forbid) the centerline would go off from the direction of travel and risk throwing the passengers out of the boat when it contacted the water again. Maybe there was a reason for horsepower limits on hulls!

Damn Mark, I missed your reply till just now, sorry! I think the old man needs to play with the setting, especially since I now put her for sale.
Thanks for the kind words! I think mine are about 350hp to the propshafts. Gordon didn't go wild on them so they would last. Too bad it had a summer of growth on the bottom in the vid, plus the current props lab finished by Hering dropped the rpm a little too much. But I am retired and can't afford to replace $1000+ props, along with whatever else they take out just for the last little bit. The Hering work is beautiful, but I told them my concerns, and they are a fair amount heavier proving they left me some extra meat. I have previously cracked both Merc 3 blade Lightning ETs in just one outing! I think this is a nice compromise, its a little bit out of the power band, but the cruise rpm is way down like having overdrive!
That sounds like a cool boat you had, I think I saw it for sale somewhere?! I have a Cougar now too! But mine is only 10'! lol

Ah....Lake Washington in Seattle. I think I saw your boat once when I was out on the lake. I lived in Seward Park - had my Formula near Andrews Bay and saw a boat with twin V8s.....sweet.

Sorry for the slow response, I don't get notified of comments, and only see them if I look at UA-cam on the PC. The old 3.6's loved to rev, and they are actually spinning a bit to low now, way off the limiters with the Hering finished props. They left more meat for longevity which is a nice trade off. I assume you are talking about the lowers, never had a problem ever with the mids. Haven't even had a lower off since 2011! That said, I figured out some tricks long ago to make them live. As far as the motors go, I have owned the boat for 25 years and have just recently gone thru both motors for the first time, so they are the most dependable motors I can imagine! And easy to work on too, never been to a dealer for anything! I did buy it with a hurt motor because someone had unhooked the warning horn when one oil pump went out, not smart!

mp855835 just remember hearing that but I would assume it would be the lower units taking the beating. just hit a submerged rock two days ago destroyed my prop skeg and driveshaft. I love videos like yours cus it actually shows how much of a beating outboards take

Sorry to hear about your lower, that sucks! I do have spares, but am hoping to sell them with the boat. Yes, they are typically the weak link on any outboard (even without the rocks!). They hold up great now, and the only mod that I haven't done is to vent them under the cowl. I think going to 4 blades helps too.

mp855835 picking up a new lower tomorrow with a shorter shaft better performance whoo hoo everything happens for a reason lol. what's next for you? I'm looking for a 25ft motion or spectre

Glad to hear you will be back on the water! I have been retired nearly 4 year. The moorage gets expensive paying year around just to use it three months for our short Seattle summers, and I lost the umbrella policy over it when I left my agent. So I think I will try to get my 10' Cougar Cub running, and maybe play with motorcycles for awhile. Haven't done that since I was a kid!

Cannot buy them new now so second hand you will either need to fluke one that has been passed down or sold and the current owner cannot get it going or even realise the real value you might fluke it for say under £2k here in UK. On the other hand if you really want one you know will work right that has been serviced and sold by a good dealer and has recorded history and freshwater only use.. £5k

Just happy to finally break 100! :-) When I bought it 24 years ago it ran 88. The final answer was Monty Racing motors, then 32" Mercury lab finished (now by Hering) Pro ET props to keep it off the rev 6700 rpm rev limiters.

Same dude I got an old 1978 johnnyrude with my wee Mayland 14 fishing boat it was badged as an Evinrude 9.9. I put a 15 carb in it and it was the reeded version so all I needed was some shims and it was the exact spec as sold 15hp model. It goes like a champ on UK Vpower with a slightly lean 2 stroke mix it takes the wee boat to 22mph which is all I need And it comes out the hole fast man no joke if I need to get out the way fast I'm litteraly one pull on the cord, full stick forward then I'm out of dodge within 3 secs. I'm in Scotland mostly loch lomond and Awe
