    Feel like nobody did a video on this properly yet, but can you do a video on what getting a type rating is like? What you studied, your routine, fun stories from there, crazy simulator situations you're put into and how you solved them, etc. That would be great to listen to.

    Go to your dream airlines competitor(s) regional. Example if Delta is that, go to an AA regional. If AA or United is the dream, go to Endeavor. Metering is certainly happening.

      Exactly what I was going to comment. They are poaching each others regionals as to not hurt their own regionals manpower.

      I agree. This is definitely true for the most part right now. However that can certainly change. I know plenty of people in the last 12 months that I’ve been hired within as well as from competitors.

      I’m kind of in that position, Garrett, and you were one of the people that inspired me to go back to Flying after 13 years of Atc. I live in Miami with my family and would love to be at AA, but my only way to make the initial step was to do Envoy for the Miami bass, and for the captain pay at 750 hours. But now I’m kind of in that boat where they say it’s really tough to get hired off the street if you’re at a wholly owned.
      And I get really frustrated when people tell me to go to Spirit for six months and then go to AA. If I went through all that stress of getting through training at Spirit/ Jetblue, I don’t see myself making another jump.

    I'd love to get info on the difference between the life of a reserve vs a lineholder pilot. I've been going through a divorce for the last two years and it's going to basically erase the last 20 years of my life's progress. Really looking forward to finalizing this mess so I can move out of my dangerous, high intensity, high environmental exposure job into a job as an airline pilot. Thank you for the info and keep up the good work. 👍

    I’ll be in my late forties when I start my pilot career with a regional, should I just stay my career with the regional I get hired with? Is it even worth moving to mainline later on since I’ll be starting so late in age? What would you suggest?

    I'm hearing that you shouldn't pick a regional that's owned by the major you want to end up at. Example, starting at envoy to get to AA. You'll be behind thousands of other pilots in the flow. Maybe I'm wrong, but i'm reading this all over airline pilot central.

    Great video! I’m worried that the supply is going to catch up to the demand in a few years. And that’s when I’ll just be finishing up all my hours. Should guys just getting started be worried? This pilot trend seems to be something everyone’s hopping on due to the “pilot shortage”

    Except the slowest way to a legacy is by going to their regional. I know you buck the trend but most of the recommendations right now are go to a regional not connected with the mainline you want in the long run. At least that's for the quickest way

    How long do you think this hiring rate will go on for? I hear everyone saying NOW is the time to become a pilot, but are they taking into consideration the time it takes from initial basic flight training, to becoming a regional pilot? Which is around 4-5yrs if I’m not mistaken? Genuine question, would mean a lot if you could answer! Appreciate it, keep up the great content

    Totally tangent to the point of the video, but strictly speaking "regional" is an outdated term from the days of government granted monopolies(1930s through 1970s), it was a specific thing in the context of the Civil Aeronautics Board allotting routes. Today regional is more of a vague description of scheduled airlines that mostly fly aircraft in the 20 to 80 seats size range. (and most of them happen to contract with "majors" for various business reasons but that is not required.)

    Thanks for all the info! I'm trying to decide where to go after flight school, and I'm considering SkyWest for a number of reasons. But I'm also thinking of going to one of the low cost airlines so that I can start off on a 737 right out of the gate, and then after upgrading and working as a captain for them for a couple years, transitioning to a legacy carrier as a direct entry captain. Does this sound like a reasonable plan, or are there some red flags I should be aware of?

    • @flywithgarrett
      @flywithgarrett  Рік тому +3

      Definitely something to consider. Regionals have some pros and cons. But a pro of a LCC is the type rating and potentially better QOL (quality of life) with the overnights and such.

What is the usual time-line or years when a FO at Regional will start seeing 6 figure salaries? Just debating about the pay-cut I will have to take when I make this switch. From what I have seen - $90/hr for a Regional FO appears to be the starting salary (75 hr block time comes to 81k pre-tax) Also when you start as a regional FO, are we guaranteed the hours to fly or are we a reserve pilot?
