  • Watch as our seasoned beekeeper, Jose Uribe, travels through Butte County, CA where the effects of the Camp Fire can still be seen. He's heading over to our bee yard located deep in the canyon in Northern California to check on our electric fence and our honeybee hives. Last week we had a bear get tangled in the fence lines, but luckily was only able to destroy one bee hive looking for larvae to eat.
    In tow, Jose has brought our queen bank from the shop, and will be sharing how we package our queen orders for shipment. He will be talking about a few essential key tips for packaging, and also for delivering as he heads on over to our shipper to drop off the bees.
    If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 11 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019. We specialize in queen breeding, honey production, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
    Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

    When we ship queens we put our sponges in a plastic bag with a few slits cut in it. It keeps the box and bees dry while still giving them plenty of access.

      Chris thanks for sharing. We have done tried it many times in the past but have found for us we have a lower amount of nurse bees that die by not limiting the bees how much water they take in. On a larger commercial level they would have me pack the queens with menstrual pads and they worked excellent but in our opinion that is not something we care to have in our shipment boxes. Thanks for sharing Chris and for watching

    Another good video...thanks! I thought I might ship some queens the summer of 2021 but I think I will wait until 2022. The customer organisation part looks complicated to me yet at this point. Maybe once I get more experience it won't look so bad. Getting the queen numbers to match up to the customer orders somehow seems daunting. How do you handle this Jose? Do you just leave them in the mating nucs until the orders come in? And then once you catch queens it has to be timed so you can drop a cell the next day. I can't quite seem to understand how it all matches up.

      @Calvin, it can be complicated! We use quickbooks to calculate our order numbers, and also we have a charting system that is pre-made before the season starts. Since we've been breeding for a while now, we track our percentages which allows us to be able to estimate how many queens we will have available for the following year; but in the end it's all dictated by weather of course. We temporarily hold the queens in "queen banks" to allow for die-off prior to shipment. We graft cells by "rounds" that are scheduled based on when we catch the prior round. Lots of organization.

    Your order page is not updated yet. Are orders for two queens accepted? Can't say alot about the Georgia bees I've been getting.

      Hi Donald, yes, we can provide you with qty (2). We received your email, let us know whenever you are ready. Sorry to hear about your hives, we've heard the same thing a lot from colleagues lately, even on large scales

    Never used ups im using usps ... Im using those orange queen battery boxes ... Add sponge with little tape over most of it so bees dont get wet ... Then i hot glue the battery box in a express box .. Smaller orders i use 3 hole cage hot glue them to the side of 4x4x10 box .. Punch holes in both boxes .. Im in Michigan we dont have all the regulations like other states pretty laid back .. Hot day here is upper 80s .. We hit 90 were dieing ...i do ship all over the country . they will last 4 or 5 days .. With covid last summer most shipments took 2 to 3 days ..only couple went 4 only one was 5 days but they were still alive ...if im shipping to area with extreme heat ill use the battery box method .. Going to try queen cells next year just need to figure out which box to use and how to pack them

      I've been contemplating trying out the battery boxes but just not certain that we will use USPS for any of our shipments. We have had one to many incidents with USPS, it just might be our local offices that have trouble. This year was a wild year for all queen breeders. With UPS being so setback on meeting their shipping times, we began only shipping queens Monday-Wednesday just to ensure the ladies made it ok and not sitting in a hub somewhere overnight. We had that happen twice, one order was 160 queens that sat for 6 days. Thankfully we only had 19 dead🙏 Curious what 2021 is going to look like🤦🏻‍♂️

      I don't like the usps, I ordered queens last year & she went on a very long road trip went to several states. It would have been better if I just drove & picked them up. 1 hour there & 1 hour back. The queens were almost dead when I finally got then here. So UPS for me now.

      @@jacksparrow1292 i have people drive 100+ miles oneway to buy one queen ... Last year Customer did it twice in 7 days .. She put the screen side of the cage tight against the comb .. Bees couldn't feed two queens so they died

      @@hootervillehoneybees8664 Okay, sorry but what has that got to do with the post office being lazy & shipping my queens the long way around, it was their mistake they sent them in the wrong direction. I had to keep them in the house & feed them until they recouped. Try sending a letter by mail now & see what happens. UPS is still the best choice for me, I still get packages on time with them & I have had orders from Cal. Flordia, & N.Y. get here with no problems. I was just wondering why you would take that kind of chance? It's not any cheaper.

    How many colonies do you use for drones near your mating yard?

    • @TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
      @TheCaliforniaBeekeeper  4 роки тому +2

      We keep bigger yards of 96 in our mating yards. We run an average of 300-350 nucs per 96. Big yards means higher drone stocks
