  • I have ordered mated queens through the mail a few times and each company seems to do it a little bit differently. This is the first time I have ordered from Pendell Apiaries in California. Pretty Cool. Check it out!

    What is the expected survival rate for queen shipping?
    I don't hear people talk about that. But I did hear that Covid slowing of mail hurt some queen suppliers somewhat.
    I heard that the average age of many of the real beekeepers is around late 50s to 60. I was curious what you thought about this also.
    And how did you like cordovans? They are so interesting, so I had to bring it up.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 роки тому +1

      I have had good experience with queens surviving shipping. I am 53 so approaching that age. The Cordovans are beautiful queens. I had some that fizzled out quickly but the ones that survived were pretty good queens and were gentle.

      Err...haha well I thought about what you said. When you said some fizzled out quickly... do you think this was because of a certain reason? Like, smaller queens not fed a lot early? Or something else? Although you did answer me already its just so fun to talk bees w ppl.

      I am not sure. I tend to find this to be the case when buying mated queens. Many do well but usually they do not all end up being good queens. I’m sure it is very stressful on them early in their lives to be put in a cage and don’t across the country. But is have had some that have been very good queens, gentle and productive.

    Bruce, I've never seen queens packaged so beautifully.
    We just received two queens from a well-known breeder, all of them DOA due to very poor packaging.
    This was wonderful! I'll have to contact them when I need to re-queen.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Hey Bruce, some guy took scenes at 2:27 of this video for his anti-bee video. In it he states that your shipment of queens is carrier of disease and parasites. If you gave this person permission to use your clip, then nevermind. But the video is a vegan choice video advocating the abolishment of beekeeping which doesn't seem like something you would advocate. "Why don't Vegan's Eat Honey" is the name of the video here on youtube. He cut out your watermark. But I remember this video because the queens were packaged so well + your scrubs. The clip he used is at 2:46 of that video.

    What should you do when queen shippers send you queens and they are dead in the mail before you get them?
    Said company not responding to messages.

      I don’t sell queen so you will have to reach out to queen breeders that do. Not sure if they can ship to your country.

      Great idea! I typically don’t jerk mine and often lose track of where the Queen came from. The cool thing about these queens is that they automatically mark them and don’t charge extra.

      I have played with queen rearing a little bit but it is so time sensitive that it is hard for me to do with my work schedule. It is still something I may try someday. I end up raising some queens from walk away splits, swarm cells, supercedures etc and many of them do well but to raise in high quantity is just something I have not taken the time to really become proficient at.
      I also like to try queens from reputable breeders and introduce new genetics to this area.
      Maybe someday...who knows?
      Thanks again.

    Did you have any issues with kohenen queens? Reasons for swapping? The reason im asking is we just placed a large order of queens and never done business with them before.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 роки тому +1

      I called Koehnen and they were done selling queens for the year. They recommended Pendell. I have ordered from several different places over the years.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 роки тому +2

      I preferred the Koehnen carniolans to the Italians to be honest. They just seemed to do better in my case. However I have not ordered a lot of them so my review is probably not the most dependable.

  • @michaelhendrick9059

    Bruce, how do you introduce these Queens? No attendants or candy for slow release. Please explain.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  5 років тому +1

      There is candy but it was facing down so the attendants wouldn’t clean it out. The attendants in the box are feeding the queens from the moisture and candy provided in the bottom of the box.
      I introduce them into the hives after the splits or hives are queenless. It usually takes a couple of days for the bees in the hive to eat through the candy and by then they usually accept the queens. I introduced 9 of these queens today and in most cases the bees were very interested and did not seem too aggressive. Once the bees in the hive accept the queen they will feed her through the cage until she is released. Great question!

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  5 років тому +1

      Michael Hendrick here is a video of how I like to do it.
      If I am not using this kind of nucs I put the cages between the frames making sure the workers can get to the screen to feed the queen. I also like to have the candy oriented up, especially if there are attendants inside the cage because if an attendant dies and blocks the exit them the queen cannot leave.
      But my favorite way to do it is the way I do it in this video.

    Just ordered 3 queens from Pendell to be delivered next week. Was wondering about any update on the personality/progress your new bees. I know you mentioned some of your bees recently became feisty. Is that the dearth or new stock? thanks for the info. Pendell were super nice when dealing with them.

    Christmas in July! I knew you had to take a peek at the Queens. As usual you make the Bees the stars of the video and it is so much fun to watch. Do you re-queen in summer with new queens to reduce the swarming in the spring? I've been keeping for only 3 years so I'm trying to learn from you. Thanks

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  5 років тому

      Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words. I mainly do a few summer splits to increase my numbers a bit to hopefully help in case I have some losses between now and spring. Now that you mention it if managed properly maybe it does help reduce swarming in the spring.
      I replaced a few queens today in hives that were weak and also did a few splits. Have used 9 queens so far. I have another 8 or 9 splits set up for tomorrow. Will see how it goes.
      Thanks for your input and thanks for watching!

    do u change out your queens every year thanks

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  5 років тому +1

      No I do not change out all my queens every year. I have found that good queens seem to last at least a couple or three of years and replacing all of them every year would be very pricey. Sometimes it seems the second year is the best. When the queens begin to fail the bees seem to do a pretty good job replacing them through supercedure or sometimes they swarm.
      I don’t get to bent out of shape if they swarm though I would rather them not do that.
      If I determine a queen is not pulling her weight or failing and I catch it in time I will replace her. Today I replaced a few queens that were ineffective with some of these new queens. So I just kind of try to monitor the need as I work with my bees.
      I am still trying to figure it all out but this is how I manage my queen situation currently.
      Great question!!!

    Can you annoying youtubers stop capitalizing words in your titles? You know damn well it's just another way of click-baiting. Stop

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  Рік тому

      I’m sorry this bothers you but the whole idea behind titles is to help encourage folks click on the video. I put a lot of work into the videos and am always trying to improve my game. This is an older video. I spend a lot of time filming, editing, creating thumbnails and titles and researching how to improve all of the above. Of course I want more people to click on the video and watch it. I don’t always capitalize key words but sometimes I do. Sorry it bothers you so much but thanks for watching. Appreciate the feedback. Maybe could check out a couple of my newer videos and see if you find them annoying.
      Couple of questions for you…why do you not think I should try to do activities that will help cause people to click on my videos? Do you believe that capitalizing key words causes fewer people to click? I honestly want to know. I have been known to change how I do things based on constructive feedback from my viewers.
      Final thought…I have millions of views on my channel and this is the first time anyone has ever commented on this. I wonder how many more people feel this way. 🤔
